Misaki heard rumors and several stories of the chaos had just occurred, but that didn’t concern her at the moment. Dion was the only thing on her mind as she raced through the throngs of students still lingering in the hallways to gossip of recent events. She’d been in the school when what everyone was referring to as some sort of creepy bird creature had arrived. The tiny Japanese girl had only just left her last class, making her way to the next when the scream had torn through the air. Several around her had dropped to their knees and covered their ears at the piercing sound. She’d nearly done the same if it hadn’t been for her being so damned stubborn. Misaki had leaned into the nearest wall for support, head swimming as her thoughts clouded over. She could tell it was madness, she knew it by the whispers that had torn their way into the back of her head and grown louder and louder in each passing moment that the sound echoed through the halls. Her first thoughts were of Dion. If she could just find him, maybe they could find whatever was making that scream and stop it. She’d given in. Well okay, not given in exactly, but she’d been unable to resist for certain. It’d only lasted a brief moment. Everything in her plain of vision was tinted red and all that occupied her thoughts then were ideas of malice and cruelty. She wanted to hurt someone, make them scream. She wanted to spill blood and make those around her beg for mercy. But she’d shaken loose. Misaki had pulled herself back from it, turned herself around and slammed her head against the wall she’d been leaning against for support. It had hurt like hell and there was a bruise forming on the left side of her forehead, but it had brought her back into the realm of sanity. The scream had lingered though, so she’d covered her ears and fought her way forward. Just as suddenly as it had started, though, it was over. It was silent again save for the pained groans of fallen students and heavy, frightened breathing of others. Misaki needed to find Dion. The tiny Japanese girl had pushed her way through groups of students insistent on blocking the hallways with their own worries. She ducked in and out of classrooms looking for that green hair of his, asked around to see if anybody knew where he was. The tiny Japanese girl paused occasionally to call his name, but there was never any answer. She was starting to get frantic. What if something had happened to him? What if he was hurt? What if he was hurt and laying somewhere and nobody could get to him? If her heart had been beating any faster, it would’ve burst right out of her chest. Her mind was racing with a million thoughts. Worry was making her careless and dizzy; she’d nearly knocked over three people already by simply turning corners, her face set in an expression made up entirely of anxiety. She didn’t feel right, she needed to find him. Something was definitely wrong, she needed to find him. If Dion was looking for her too, then they would have run into each other by now. She’d switched to calling and texting his phone when she’d run out of breath from looking all around, but there was never an answer. The tiny Japanese girl didn’t know what else to do until her phone finally started buzzing. She’d never answered a call faster, “Hello?”“Misaki Saito?” Wait, she knew that voice, “That’s me. Nurse Nygus, did something happen?”“Evidently, otherwise I wouldn’t be calling.” Yup, that was Nurse Nygus alright. Misaki felt a lump form in her throat as the nurse continued, “Dion Key has been admitted to the infirmary with minor burns to his right hand and a mild head injury. He apparently tried to rush the construct that sent out that madness laden scream and was knocked unconscious. As his Meister, I thought it best to inform you that he is now safe and sound here in the infirmary if you wish to see hi-“ “I’m on my way right now.”Misaki had started running towards the seconds floor stairs the minute Dion had been mentioned. She took the steps two at a time, damn near tripping halfway up but catching herself on the banister and launching herself forward upwards. Dion was hurt, she needed to find him. She didn’t even care that words like minor and mild had been used to describe his injuries, he was hurt, she didn’t fucking care how minor or mild his injuries were! Misaki could still feel a lump in her throat, ready to bring on the tears at a moment’s notice depending on what sights awaited her in the infirmary. The tiny Japanese girl threw open the door, breathing hard from sprinting to her destination. Nurse Nygus looked up from the most recent addition to the infirmary, “Ah, there you are. Third bed from the right is where Dion is.” Misaki nodded and hurried past her, weaving in between other Weapons and Meisters and friends and teachers all present to look after those they cared for that had been hurt by the madness. She was still feeling a bit antsy and irritated herself. Her head felt all mixed up, and that wasn’t just because her heart was sending her waves of anxiety at every thought that happened to center around Dion. Third bed from the right, that was where he was and that was where she rushed to. Still unconscious, Misaki sat beside him. He looked a complete mess. Taking a deep breath, there was no way to numb the stinging sensation that formed a tight knot in her chest. This was her fault. If she’d been there with him, this never would have happened. She’d been able to stop this somehow, if only she’d been there. Her usual wicked grin was nowhere to be seen and mischief couldn’t have been further from Misaki’s mind. Her face was set in a deadly serious grimace, even as tears welled up in her yes but didn’t quite spill over. They merely lingered, threatening to make their presence known if anything else terrible should occur. Very gently, Misaki took his hand in both of hers, lowering her gaze so she wouldn’t have to look at Dion’s unconscious form, “Wake up.”She lightly squeezed his hand and closed her eyes, a few tears escaping her as she did so. They fell and landed atop the bandages that covered his hand, “Please wake up, Dion! Please!”

When Dion lost consciousness from his failed attack on that whatever he stayed that way for a while. There was no semi-consciousness for him, just the state of cold unconsciousness. Apparently he had been carried to the infirmary by the crowd of students that were around him when he lost his shit but he had no recollection of that. For all he knew they had dropped him along the way and injured him more than the bird thing had. Alright that was rather unlikely but still, the point remained that he was at the mercy of those around him for the moment.
Dion’s first peak of semi-consciousness happened after he had already been transported and dealt with. He couldn’t feel anything and his head was still spinning but he was somewhat aware. Around him was the familiar darkness that he was used to seeing in his weapon form. However this reach of darkness seemed less comforting and more suffocating. There he was just floating in the empty expanse of void with no idea what was going on around him, here or externally. Maybe everything had just been some sort of really realistic and fucked up dream that he would be waking up from? No, the spinning in his head was as real as anything he could imagine.
So what exactly was going on? He had to be somewhere just knocked out or something. Clearly he wasn’t dead or anything because he was way to awesome to get himself killed by some fucked up bird thing. The darkness would make sense if he was in his weapon form but last time he checked that wasn’t even an option. If that thing had done anything to mess with his weapon form he would kill it! He didn’t care if he saw it die whenever ago, he would find a way to resurrect it and kill it again!
The idea of his weapon form being disabled or something from that creature was utterly infuriating. If it had been he would have made it top priority to find it, kill it in the most painful way imaginable, and eat the soul. He knew eating souls wasn’t the most ideal way of absorbing souls but that was irrelevant. It would probably taste like some warped turkey or something. That would be his name for the thing! The weird turkey thing that managed to cause panic thorough Shibusen, the fear turkey! Well fuck the fear turkey!
Caught up in his thoughts of revenge and anger it took Dion a moment to notice that things were starting to change around him. For starters there was a green light floating above him that looked oh so interesting. Acting like he was swimming through this mass of darkness seemed to work and allowed him to propel himself toward the light. It grew larger as he approached it until there was a green orb floating next to him that was a bit smaller than a basketball. Floating next to it Dion looked suspiciously before reaching out a hand to see if he could touch it.
That was a yes! Upon contact with the orb everything became a mass of bright colors and twisting everything. When things settled down he was staring directly at some altered version of the moon. A full circle in the sky but with the same face and dripping blood he was used to. It was staring right back at him with an echoing laugh that Dion could feel somehow. The rest of the sky was exceptionally dark and had a mass of odd shifting clouds that did nothing to help him make sense of anything.
On further inspection Dion noticed he was not in his partial form but was standing upside down in a familiar but different place. It took him a moment but it finally came to him, this was his little soul area. The last time he was here or even bothered to think about it was when he was training his resonance with Misaki but now it was all warped and twisted. For starters it was upside down and he was standing on the roof…floor…whatever it was! The fences around the edges seemed shorter and also managed to be bent, twisted, and all around not right.
Taking a step to try and explore this fucked version of his soul turned out to be quite the adventure. As soon as his foot touched the ground there was a booming echo of his footstep as well as a splash of every color he could think of from the point of contact. Stumbling a bit he shook his head and tried to power through it. He was going to get to the edge and look around outside of his little roof area. This was his own soul dammit!
On a scale of bad ideas that ranked up there pretty high. Running for the fence only resulted in him getting trapped in the spinning rainbow vortex that went on forever. It felt like ages of running before he finally came to a stop next to the fence, now out of breath and exhausted. Looking back he could see where he started from, not even ten steps away from the fence. Sighing he looked over the fence and instantly regretted his decision. Last time he looked there was nothing at all around his soul space, this time he wasn’t as fortunate.
All around the darkness were the scattered remains of what looked like buildings. They floated around in the nothingness calmly and that only unsettled him more. Stepping back a dark red fluid started to slide down around him. It was from above him, which was to say below him. The fluid oozed all around him down the fences and dripping down to the odd moon. The dark fluid mixing with the usual blood on the moon’s face. Dion finally made the connection between this fluid and the ooze of the bird thing and in that moment it burst into flames.
Stepping back toward the center the flames rose up and nearly covered the area. The moon was wreathed in the flames with just the face free to stare down at him while laughing at Dion’s misfortune. The heat was about the same as earlier when it assaulted his partial form. Unbearable to this degree Dion remained standing while gasping for breath or escape. Around him the world spun and smoke flowed in a closing spiral. Wrapping around his feet and climbing up the smoke reached to choke him while Dion remained helpless to fight it. While wrapped around his neck the smoke began to take the form of the bird creature, its eyes staring straight into his.
Dion’s eyes shot open and he gasped for breath. Everything was still blurry and spinning a little but seeing white above him and not darkness or a moon was enough to start him calming down. Closing his eyes he focused on slowing his breathing and calming down. He was most likely in the infirmary and not a real hospital considering the smell, so that must have meant his injuries weren’t that bad. There wasn’t any screaming around him so things must have calmed down from earlier.
Taking a deep breath he exhaled and opened his eyes again. His vision was still wonky but he could deal with that. It was only then that he noticed one of his hands had something on it and there was someone holding it. That must have been some mark from his partial form after punching that barrier. The person was a bit more open but a quick look to the side could fix that. Misaki, that was a relief. She was alright so that was a relief, plus it meant it wasn’t Bang and that was also a relief.
Attempting a smile Dion lifted his left hand and brushed his hair so it was correct and presentable, he was injured not useless. He already felt bad enough after failing to do anything against the bird creature and the last thing he needed was for Misaki to see him being this pathetic. Suddenly getting a serious face he held up a finger at Misaki and moved his hand to the side, closing it into a fist in the process. Activating his partial form in his left fist he did the same in both his feet only keeping his bandaged hand where it was. Three out of four worked so his right hand was probably alright and he could test his full form later. Giving a sigh of relief he rested his hand on the bed and turned back to smile at his meister.
”That was one hell of a nap, hope I didn’t miss anything interesting.”
Giving a small laugh and hiding the wince that was brought on by said laughter Dion tried to play off the whole thing. It was useless but he tried to push back the fact that he had been so useless and even gave into the madness that fucker brought with it. Misaki didn’t need to know how pathetically weak he was.

She waited. She would wait for the rest of the day and stay overnight. Misaki would remain at Dion’s side for days if she needed to. She was not leaving her Weapon until he woke up. It wasn’t enough to know that he was out of harm’s way; she needed to know that he would wake up, could wake up, that he was alright. Everything she’d been feeling about her partner was very suddenly and unexpectedly doubled. The butterflies in her stomach had turned into pterodactyls and the quickened heartbeat was more akin to a thundering in her chest. Maybe her recently realized love for him was only making her feel worse. Misaki couldn’t tell. She couldn’t remember what it felt like to not love him, recent as it was.
Even as students and teachers alike bustled around her, the tiny Japanese girl didn’t seem to take any notice. Her eyes were glued to the bandages that loosely encased Dion’s right hand. If they were so thin then it couldn’t be that bad, right? It would heal soon enough. Being gentle as not to hurt him, Misaki traced small circles around each of the knuckles of his right hand with her fingers, her face blank. Another silent tear rolled down her cheek and dropped onto the gauze, disappearing as it was absorbed into the spongy fabric meant to help her Weapon’s wounds heal. If she’d been there instead of fighting the madness that had briefly overtaken her mind then maybe he wouldn’t have those wounds. Misaki bit her lip and exhaled, her eyes closing again. That sharp pain in her chest was back.
Gasping and sudden movement caught her attention immediately. Her own eyes flew open and her gaze was immediately on her Weapon. He was awake. Dion was awake! A smile ghosted over her lips, but for now she held it back. She still didn’t know if he was really alright,
“Dion?”
Her voice shook. She didn’t care. All of Misaki’s attention was focused on Dion. He had closed his eyes again. When he first woke he seemed panicked, but now the Demon Spear appeared a bit calmer. Misaki watched him and waited. She wouldn’t say or do anything until he did. If anything seemed wrong she’d be up and running for Nurse Nygus in an instant. Her worries were partly dismissed when he looked at her. Not just because he looked at her, but he looked at her and saw her and recognized her and he smiled. Misaki returned it with one of her own. The grin wasn’t back just yet, but her smile was, the crooked one that pulled up the right corner of her mouth just a bit more than the left. Watching him attempt to fix his hair she shook her head,
“Rough landing, eh?”
She still sounded so uneasy. She’d have cringed, but she kept it together. The tiny Japanese girl could worry about getting that little extra oomph of confidence back in her tone of voice later. Now wasn’t a time for her usual sass and attitude. Misaki did looked a bit puzzled at his trying out his partial form though. Still, she kept silent. She knew he must have had a reason for it, but she could ask him about it in a moment. For now she would let him continue waking up. She had a million questions buzzing around in her head, most of them wanting to know if he was alright, really alright, but she held her tongue.
Keeping her face passive save for a raised eyebrow, Misaki relaxed a bit more when her Weapon let out his own relived sigh. Another smile, that was good. Again, Misaki gave a smile of her own and let out a soft laugh that sounded a bit too breathy to be considered true at his words. If she hadn’t been careful it would have sounded more akin to a sob. The tiny Japanese girl gave her Weapon’s hand a light squeeze without really meaning too. It was more of a subconscious action, a way to remind herself that yes, Dion was there and awake and seemingly okay. She was silent a moment before realizing that it’d probably be best to try and downplay her own distress a bit. Turned her head to her hair feel over her face a bit, Misaki kept one of her hand still over Dion’s while using the other to wipe her eyes. Only when any trace of tears had been wiped away did she look back at him, her voice still sounding a bit softer than usual as she spoke to him,
“How are you feeling?”

When Misaki said his name Dion was still partly out of it and didn’t pick up on any shakiness in her voice. His senses returned shortly after and things were more in focus he could make out most of the things going on. The lingering sensation of his head spinning remained in the back of his mind to add that small layer of distortion onto everything around him. A rough landing was a bit of an understatement, more like a rough flight and the painful crash afterwards. The whole thing had been one terribly mess and he just happened to fuck up and get caught in it.
”More of a crash than a landing, definitely not one of my better ones either.”
If he was falling off a building or something he would have at least had the option to cling to a wall or roll when he hit the ground. Slamming sideways into a banister didn’t exactly provide those same opportunities. If only gravity worked with him more often maybe he could have avoided this whole thing. Gravity wouldn’t be that nice though and considering how many times he bested it this was probably gravity’s way of getting back at him.
Done cursing his relationship with the force of gravity Dion refocused his attention on the situation at hand. Even he could tell that Misaki wasn’t in the best of sorts at the moment but his head was still too fuzzy for him to formulate a proper thought about it. Picking up more on her actions than the inflections in her voice he didn’t know how to respond properly and while he was like this it might not be best to do so regardless. Even so there was one thing that he could pinpoint with his mind out of sorts, it was his fault.
Misaki tried to rid herself of the negative state so Dion figured he could try to ignore it a little. How was he feeling? That was a good question actually. He wasn’t even sure how exactly he was feeling. Sore was a pretty close description but that might not go over so well with his meister if she was already upset. Taking a moment to look around to confirm he was in the infirmary and think Dion saw that there were others in here with him. Wonderful, he didn’t help any of these people when he was trying to. Moving his eyes back to Misaki he answered.
”A little dizzy but I’ll live.”
Maybe a bit of an under exaggeration but it seemed like a good enough answer. He didn’t need Misaki worrying about him any more than she already was. Sinking back in the bed Dion hoped that he wouldn’t be stuck in here for too long. He needed to get out so he could train and get stronger so this didn’t happen again. Next time he faced something even close to that bird thing he would utterly destroy it before it could do anything.
”What about you? That fucking scream clearly got in here…”
Exactly. The scream reached inside the school and he couldn’t do a single thing to stop it. Everyone in here was at the mercy of the madness that he couldn’t stop. Misaki looked alright but it was hard to tell when madness was involved. The people outside with him hadn’t been faring that well either, a bunch had lost consciousness early on. That only managed to remind him of the others that were with him.
”And the others! What about Natsuki and the others that were outside? How are they doing?”
Hopefully none of them were too badly off. The NOT students seemed to be doing pretty well last he checked and the others aside from Nat and the other girl seemed to be doing well enough. None of them could have got more hurt then him could they? No, he was supposed to have been the worst off because he fucked up. The others were just there; they didn’t do anything nearly as stupid as he did.

Crash landing? What the hell happened out where he’d been, some kind of explosions? No, Misaki was fairly certain she would have heard that, all instances of screaming aside. That had her even more on edge though. How hard had he landed? Was the head injury he had more serious than she’d originally thought? No, he’d be alright. He was awake and talking; if it had been anything terribly serious or life threatening that wouldn’t be happening and Nurse Nygus definitely would have mentioned it. She pulled a face and winced at the information, though. Whatever had been out there sure had done a number on her Weapon.
If she hadn’t heard the rumors by now about how the thing had supposedly disappeared, Misaki would have been out here looking for it. Anything that did that much damage to her Weapon was not going to get away with it without some sort of repercussions. Hell, she’d have liked to track it down and beat it into a bloody mess with her bare hands using Soul Purge as her only means of offense, but she knew that wasn’t going to happen. Besides, if it could do that much damage to Dion then she could only guess the kind of damage it could do to her. The urge was still there, though, but she hid her frustration well by keeping her main focus on Dion for now.
Dizzy still? If a crash landing was involved, then Misaki was glad that was all he was complaining about. Anything more than a bit of lightheadedness would have made her more worried. The tin Japanese girl did let out another relived sounding sigh, though, smiling just a bit,
“I’m glad, then. I don’t know how many people I almost mowed down to get up here when Nurse Nygus called me, but it must’ve been a lot. Tripped by way up the stairs too, to be honest, I was so worried.”
She laughed a bit at her own antics as she remembered her race to the infirmary, but it was halfhearted. The whole situation had thrown her completely out of whack, and that was on top of how out of place she already felt having to keep certain feelings under wraps still. Oh right, the scream. Misaki honestly hadn’t intended to say anything about what happened to her. The Meister was honestly a bit ashamed of herself for having lost her mind, brief though it had been. Lowering her head a bit, the tiny Japanese girl sighed before looking up at her partner,
“Yeah it did. That hurt like a son of a bitch, and as much as I detest saying this…it did get to me. Not for long though! I knocked myself out of it before I got really bad.”
Before she’d hurt anyone, at least. Misaki had never felt that kind of malicious hatred towards anything. She got angry from time to time, and occasionally she could get wrapped up in the spirit of competition a bit too much, but that pure unadulterated bloodlust and urge to just blindly hurt people was not something that she had ever felt before in her entire life. It scared her. No, it terrified her. Misaki gestured vaguely to the light bruise forming on one side of her forehead from hitting her head against eh wall. Not the most ideal way of winning one’s sanity back, but it was all she’d been able to think of and it had worked, and that was all that mattered. If her mind had been warped any longer and she had wound up hurting someone, she would never have forgiven herself.
Wait, Natsuki had been outside too? Misaki hadn’t heard any word about her best friend, nor had she heard about anybody else that had been in the direct vicinity of whatever th creature had been. She’d heard about the teacher showing up and that someone, probably Dion now that she thought about it, had gotten hurt but that was it. Shaking her head, she adopted a rather blank look, not really being able to decide between worry and confusion,
“I haven’t heard all that much other than rumors. I heard that there was some weird bird thing that caused the scream, that somebody got hurt, and that a teacher showed up and the thing up and disappeared. I didn’t even know that you were out there until Nurse Nygus called me. I ran all over hell’s half acre looking for you. You’re the only one that I’ve come across because you’re the only one that really crossed my mind.”
That last sentence of hers hadn’t really been meant to be words but more as a thought. It just sort of slipped out. Trying to cover her concern and any latent romantic subtext that it may imply, Misaki quickly added,
“I’m worried about Nat too, though! I’ll probably go look for her later, but I’m sure she’s alright. She and I are the toughest Japanese girls in all of Shibusen after all!”
Not the smoothest cover, but she hoped it would work aside from the fact that the entire second sentence was a lie. She wanted to be sure that her best friend was alright, that much was true, but she was more likely to ask Bang about it since Nat was her Meister. She wondered if the Technicolor girl even knew what had happened. But that was beside the point. Her main focus was Dion, and until Misaki was sure he would be alright in the infirmary then she wasn’t going to leave his side.

So nurse Nygus went about and called Misaki about his condition. Dion had hoped she just wandered by and saw him passed out or something. Instead this had happened and he had probably made her worry unnecessarily. He was pretty much fine as far as he could tell, his ego wounded but that was about the most serious damage. A bit of rest and he would be ready to start training again in probably a few days, maybe a week tops! Her next words confirmed her worry and the potential additional injury to who knew how many students. Looking down at the bed Dion silently responded not really caring if she heard him or not.
”Sorry I made you worry…”
Dion didn’t respond to her laughter and remained how he was. He was just doing so well today as a whole. Get overcome by madness, end up in the infirmary, and make his meister worry about him. A whole three for three as far as fucking up went. At first Dion was going to continue looking down at the bed while Misaki talked but had a quick change when she mentioned that it hurt. Looking at his meister Dion remained how he was with his face impassive. So he failed to keep the screaming and the madness from reaching his meister, he was just the best weapon ever.
”Are you ok? From the scream and knocking yourself out? ”
Worry creeping into his voice as he spoke Dion looked intently at Misaki for an answer. She seemed to be alright, at least she wasn’t in one of the beds next to him so there was that. Seeing the bruise on her head that she must have got from breaking herself from the madness made Dion feel even worse. He couldn’t protect her from the madness or injury plus he himself ended up in the fucking hospital because of this weakness, he was utterly useless.
Not wanting to look as pathetic as he felt Dion turned back to looking at the sheets of the bed and listening to Misaki. Her story of the event was pretty accurate as far as he knew. Considering she had only heard rumors was pretty impressive considering what the thing had done. Her worry was noted but any ulterior meaning was lost on him other than the fact that he had caused her trouble because of his actions, something he should probably explain to her.
”Well the rumors seem pretty accurate. The bird thing came down and screamed, letting out all that madness with it. I went for help but…the madness got me. I attacked the thing in my…maddened state and as you can see that ended up so well. I couldn’t even touch it…”
Dion started casually enough with his story but his voice faded as he went on. Attempting a smile at the part about his injury only managed to look sad and horribly forced. His last line fading to be slightly more than a mutter. Looking down again Dion wondered if he should just stay that way until he was released and maybe even after that. He wasn’t exactly useful in anything else he had tried so why not? Hearing that Misaki didn’t know about Natsuki only made him feel worse. Even the girl who was with him at the time he couldn’t protect. She had passed out and he had been knocked out pathetically. Keeping his gaze off his meister and his head on the pillow Dion didn’t know what to do next. He felt horrible even if the pain from his injuries felt minor.
”I’m sorry. Sorry I couldn’t do more…”
His voice quiet and not clearly directed at Misaki or himself. Dion was almost glad he was in the infirmary so he could sulk alone after his meister had left.

As Dion lowered his head, Misaki’s heart sank. She knew he’d recover from his injuries soon enough, I mean this was Dion she was talking about here. They wouldn’t be able to keep him in the infirmary for long no matter how hard they tried. The tiny Japanese girl wanted to say something to make him feel better, but she wasn’t sure how to go about accomplishing that. He could see for himself that she was okay, right? A little worry never hurt anyone, at least not too badly. She bent a bit and tilted her head, trying to catch a glimpse of his face, a gentle smile gracing her own,
“Hey now, none of that. I’m your partner; it’s my job to worry about you. I’d be one shitty excuse for a Meister if I wasn’t concerned about your well-being after that clusterfuck that just happened.”
Knocking herself out honestly hadn’t even hurt that much. Smacking her head against the wall had been simple, although she may have hit harder than intended given that she’d been maddened as well as determine to rid herself of said madness. It’d only be a small bruise, and it would dissipate soon enough after a few days. The scream didn’t seem to have too much of a lasting effect on her other than that feeling of pure unease that refused to leave her. What the madness had done to her and made her feel wasn’t something she would be forgetting anytime soon. She could still feel it, still hear it whispering to her. Misaki would need a bit before she stopped thinking about it, for certain, but she wasn’t going to let Dion worry over something that he had no power over at the moment so she shook her head,
“I’ll be alright. If all I got out of it was a minor headache and a bit of a bruise, then I definitely can’t complain. It could be worse; I could be in the bed next to you.”
She’d had his attention for a few moments, that was something. Still, her Weapon was undoubtedly crestfallen from what she could see. That wouldn’t do. If Dion was feeling down, then so was Misaki, granted neither were in any shape or state of mind to be what one would call happy at the moment. That aside, she wanted to hopefully raise his spirits at least a little before she left him, if she left him. She was very tempted to stay a while longer than she’d originally intended, but she suspected that some alone time may also do him some good. He couldn’t properly rest with Misaki hovering around. She’d just get in the way.
At least she had confirmation that the rumors were true. There had indeed been a giant bird creature that let out a madness laden scream and that was what had caused the mayhem. However hearing that Dion had attacked it, in a maddened state no less, Misaki pursed her lips and mimicked Dion in focusing her gaze on the bed sheets. That explained his injuries as well as why he was looking so down. She couldn’t blame him, though. Hell, if she had been there, she’d likely have gone after the thing as well. Moreover, from what she could gather it sounded like it was Dion attacking it that had made the scream stop. That had to count towards something, but she wasn’t about to mention it, at least not now. Something told her he really didn’t want to hear it.
Misaki had never heard Dion’s voice sound so quiet before. She’d never seen him act in a way that wasn’t either cocky or completely passive. She didn’t like it, and hearing him be so hard on himself was making her upset again. Taking a deep breath, that didn’t do a damn thing to calm her nerves. Damn it, Misaki, keep it together, she thought, now is not the time to lose your shit! It was a bit late for that thought, though. She was fighting back tears so hard that she was shaking keeping her eyes closed and her head turned away from her Weapon. Screw it, she couldn’t take this,
“Stop it.”
The tiny Japanese girl scooted closer to Dion and wrapped her arms around him, being gentle as she didn’t know how sore he was. Her voice was shaking again, and she was in part hugging him because she didn’t want him to see her cry. She didn’t care if he heard, but if he saw her tears she’d lose it,
“Stop it, stop talking like that. I would have done the same thing if I’d been there instead of you, and you must have done something to it because the screaming stopped after you attacked it from what I gather so don’t just sit there and act like you’re worthless because you’re not. I won’t hear it. You’re the best Weapon I could ever have asked for, and I’m just happy that you’re alive and safe, okay?”
The more she continued, the more her voice broke until her very last sentence was spoken in shaking breaths and her ‘okay’ was all but a controlled sob. She was holding him tighter now, afraid that if she let go he’d disappear. It was a strange thought, but it was what she felt and all that she was afraid of at the moment.

Despite Misaki’s words Dion couldn’t cheer up. No matter what she said he managed to trace the source back to him messing up. Yes, worry about your partner was a normal thing but he shouldn’t have given her a reason like this. He should have been able to fight through the madness and gotten a teacher to help like he was going to. His failure was solely because of his weakness and inability to withstand the effect of madness, made all the worse knowing that she had. Sure it took a hit to the head but there was no reason he couldn’t have done the same and not ended up like this.
On the plus side Misaki did seem fine even with the hit to the head she had to administer to herself. Healing for that wouldn’t take too long and might even be all healed before he got out, which would be as soon as he could possibly manage. Overall he was glad she hadn’t sustained any worse of an injury but that only made him feel worse. She only had a small injury and he couldn’t even protect her from that. What good was a weapon who couldn’t protect their meister from small things like that?
Maybe, just maybe he would feel a little bit better if he had managed to do anything. He failed to protect his meister, land a hit on the monster, protect the people around him, fend off the madness, and even protect himself. Hell, he couldn’t even make it to the infirmary on his own or remain conscious. The fact that he was aided in reaching the infirmary by the same NOT students who he was supposed to be keeping safe just added insult to injury. If there was anything he could take solace in was that he didn’t know any of the people that had been around him so no one he cared about saw how pathetic he was.
In a self-induced daze of self-pity Dion was starting to zone out. Thoughts of the event mixed with what he had seen while unconscious flashed in his mind only adding to his negative state of feeling. Hearing Misaki say something he did lift his gaze off of the sheet of the bed to see what she wanted. The words not registering at first it wasn’t until his meister wrapped her arms around him that they finally took.
Remaining silent as she spoke Dion simply listened and attempted to recover. Thinking about it he would hate if the situation was reversed but that probably would have made him feel even worse. Cheering up would be a wonderful thing to do but Dion couldn’t just will himself out of how he felt. Her remark about him causing the thing to stop was an exaggeration, he wasn’t the only one to attack it and the other kid looked stronger and saner. Mentioning that to Misaki wasn’t exactly the best thing to do at the moment so he kept that fact a secret for the time.
”Alright yeah I guess you’re right. I’ll try to stop being all…whatever this is.”
Returning the hug Dion ignored the pain that came with it. He could deal with his own issues later when it wouldn’t upset Misaki. There was no point in projecting his own problems onto her unnecessarily and she probably had her own things to deal with after the whole bird thing, his current state included. Giving a smile, albeit a weak one, Dion attempted to put on a less depressive appearance for the sake of his meister.
“Sorry about…everything. I just need a bit to let all this sink in. Everything has been a bit utterly fucked the last few hours or however long for me. I’ll be fine in no time!”
He hoped so at least. Dion wasn’t used to this kind of mental state and hoped it ended soon. He would try to get over it himself after his body was better and he didn’t have the memories of getting his ass kicked fresh in his head. If that didn’t work he was sure a nice kishin soul added to his collection would make him feel good as new.

After her little speech was over, Misaki remained silent. He voice would shake still if she tried to speak again, and she didn’t want to worry Dion or start sobbing. If she started crying now she’d never get over it. For one it’d be embarrassing as all hell and for another she was already very close to completely losing it. If the tiny Japanese girl was going to have a moment of complete and total uncertainty and self-loathing about not being able to make her Weapon feel better, then she was determined to at least do so at home where no one could see her.
Dion would be alright, but at the moment she couldn’t have felt any lower. Her Weapon was in a bad place and she couldn’t do a god damned thing to make him feel better. Rest would help his wounds and that pain would at least subside relatively quickly, but the moping may hang around and that would definitely serve as a reminded that there had been nothing she could have done to protect him during the attack and nothing she could do now still to get that extra dose of kickass back into him. Madness and her own state of being generally unharmed be damned, in Misaki’s eyes she’d handled the situation horribly and was currently the most useless Meister in the world for not having been there for her Weapon.
The short agreement she got from him was at least a step in the right direction. She knew that there wasn’t any way to just shake Dion out of his current state of feeling useless, although to be honest anything involving movement right now was probably not a good idea. He’d been thrown back into the school and knocked out cold, she wanted him to rest and nothing else. Granted he was Dion Key, there was no keeping him in the infirmary for very long, she knew that. Misaki at least hoped he’d stay until the pain lessened before trying anything too crazy, but then maybe that was just what he needed to get that smirk back on his face. She really didn’t know at the moment, and that again made her feel quite useless as well.
Feeling his arms around her, the knot in her chest lessened and the tiny Japanese girl instantly felt calmer. If he was responding to her, he had to feel at least a little better, or at least that was how she took it. The tears that had previously been freely rolling down her cheeks had stopped and there was no sign of any more, although she still sniffled a bit. There were no sobs to be caught and she’d stopped shaking. She felt a bit better, but she was still worried and, loath as she was to admit it, scared. Realizing how tightly she was holding onto her Weapon and that she was possibly hurting him, Misaki did move away, scooting back a bit to give Dion some space and folding her hands in her lap. Another apology, really? Trying to wipe her eyes in the most unnoticeable way possible, Misaki shook her head.
You don’t have to apologize to me, you’ve done nothing wrong. That’s what she wanted to say, but she couldn’t make the words leave her. She doubted he would really hear them anyway. She hoped that in a week or two or four they would each put all this behind them and feel much better. Misaki only hoped that she would be able to sleep at all that night. With the madness having left a memorable imprint on her psyche and with Dion hurt, she doubted she would get much sleep. If she dreamt, she expected nightmares. Maybe she would stay up and watch movies with Kiku. Hell, maybe she would even call her parents, her sister, her brother. Something, anything that would keep her calm or take her mind off of whatever this awful, empty feeling was that was taking root in her chest.
Taking a couple of slow, deep breaths, Misaki felt as though she could talk again without the worry of all her words sounding unsure and laced with future tear drops. Giving Dion that crooked smile of hers, she tucked a loose strand of her hair behind her ear,
“You better be. If you aren’t firing on all cylinders, then neither am I until you’re outta here and kicking ten kinds of mad bird ass!”

His body was beginning to protest the grip of his meister but Dion ignored it. A little more pain wasn’t going to kill him anytime soon. Besides, if he could help Misaki feel better by enduring a little bit more discomfort there wasn’t much of a question about if he would do it or not. He may have been in a shitty mood but he had just been thrown into a wall so there was no reason to drag Misaki into one with him. She hadn’t had to deal with the completeness of that bird thing so Dion wasn’t going to try and bring her down because of his own misfortune.
If anything seeing his meister as she was only made Dion want to get out of the infirmary sooner. Hopefully climbing up some building or running across a few would help lighten his mood. At any rate he would be more than craving a good free run after being stuck in here for who knew how long. So far he felt like some rest and some time would be what he needed to get over his lingering sentiment about the whole situation. He would get over it no matter what it took to shake him out of this stupid slump.
Misaki let him go and the pain caused by the embrace started to subside. His body wasn’t exactly loving him at the moment but that was hardly anything new. The amount of times he had done something stupid and managed to hurt himself in the process was endless. By now his body should just accept that he was going to get sporadic and avoidable injuries at a common frequency. Either way now he could just relax and let himself rest and heal in preparation of his release from this place.
At her comment Dion gave his own grin in response. He wouldn’t expect anything less from himself and at this point not getting better fast wasn’t even an option. The minute he was out of the damned infirmary he was putting all his effort into getting better and stronger. Regardless of how he felt he needed to get stronger so he could be useful again. The next thing he fought wouldn’t get away until he was more than done with it. He almost felt bad for the next kishin he saw because he was going to make sure it had a very short existence.
”Of course, I can’t give the kishin eggs too much of a vacation. I’ll probably start feeling better tomorrow after some time to rest. If I’m gone for too long I might upset the nature order of ass kicking!”
He meant what he said but wasn’t sure how long it would take before he was better. Wounds alone would take a bit but not too long if he was right in his assumptions. Once he could properly move, use his partial form, and climb shit he was gone. A week sounded like a good amount of time before he made his leave and he could skip the classes of that week as a plus. Yeah, after that he would be ready to thrash anything that got in his way again.

A grin! Finally a grin! Misaki took it as a good sign, worried though she still was. If he could make an effort to look like he was recovering quickly then she was sure her Weapon would be alright soon enough. He’d need rest and a few instances of climbing on the ceiling and running over rooftops to accomplish that, but as long as he was doing even somewhat alright for the moment then she was satisfied. There really wasn’t much she could do to that regard after all. She could sit and worry, but that wouldn’t help him, and she doubted Dion wanted a tiny Japanese girl hovering over him looking generally out of sorts over her Weapon being in the infirmary.
She dared to snicker at his words even. There was a bit of the awesome Dion she knew and loved so dearly. Shoulder shaking from laughter now rather than barely restrained tears, Misaki seemed to relax. She still bore a look of general concern, but the look of thinly veiled terror at the thought of Dion unconscious had left her, now replaced with that crooked smile of hers. It was strange to her how seeing him do something as simple as grin could reassure her to such a great length, but that was exactly what it did. She’d be able to leave the infirmary in good conscience knowing he was going to be okay.
Misaki still couldn’t say the same about herself though. Dion would be alright, but in her own head mind was still reeling a bit from the madness. She never felt anxious about anything, but her behavior made her apprehensive about going out anywhere for at least the next several days, or at least anywhere that didn’t happen to be Shibusen. She couldn’t miss classes after all, plus she’d no doubt visit Dion again so he didn’t go completely stir crazy being cooped up and made to keep still for once in his life. Even so, she’d be doing some hardcore soul searching and with a good amount of relaxation time being thrown in for good measure. She didn’t intend to let herself dwell on it for any longer than she needed to.
Satisfied now that Dion was safe and sound, Misaki let that wicked grin of her creep onto her face,
“I guess I should let you rest now, eh? Wouldn’t want to stall the healing process or anything with my fussing over you. Besides, Nurse Nygus’ll take good care of you I’m sure.”
And by that she really meant that Nurse Nygus would be able to keep him from leaping out a window the first chance he got. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust Dion to not rest, it was just that she knew the minute he could walk he’d probably be literally climbing the walls. Letting one of her hands gently drift over the one he had wrapped in gauze, she gave him that gentler, crooked smile again before standing,
“You be sure to rest. Like you said, we can’t upset the natural order of ass kicking for too long with you being cooped up in here. I’ll come visit you so you don’t go too stir crazy, though, I promise.”
