Noriko kept her eyes on the street and the traffic around her car as she waited for an answer from Misaki. She wasn't sure if she had actually heard of the legend especially with the possibility of her not being from Tokyo per say. She was just hoping that she'd have at least something to compare it to if that was the case. She'd describe the legend of the black rider even if she hadn't heard of it or had something to compare it to. She glanced up at the rear view mirror just as Misaki raised her eyebrow and shook her head answering her question.
It seemed that she would have to explain the legend to her but it made it easier on her partner then. She wasn't really meaning to leave him out of the loop but it was easier to question the Japanese one of the two. She just merely nodded at the question about it being native to the Tokyo area. Most natives of the Tokyo area had heard of it or had been told about it. She, herself, used to tease her younger cousins about it when they were all younger.
It used to make poor little Natsuki hide behind her brother even though she was so tough. Most people didn't like the idea of losing their head after all. That was probably the easiest way to get her to stop in her tracks when she was on a hyper spree when they were young. That was what their grandparents used to tel her when she was young to get her to settle down. That was all it was ever supposed to be a ploy to get children to behave when they were in public mostly.
She was thinking of where to start off in explaining the legend when she noticed out of the corner of her eye in the mirror Misaki straighten up then lean forward in her seat. She listened to her as she spoke and the tiniest smile might have cracked onto her face. She had found something among whatever she might have been shifting through in her thoughts to possibly compare it to. This was great although it wasn't all the same it had a few similarities. In this case, she could at least properly explain the legend now and in the end inform them of what it was.
"Pretty close, I'd say.The legend of the black rider is pretty much like that of the usual legends that are told to make children behave. I was told it by my grandparents when I was little." Noriko said as she pretty much explained her tiny, tiny, crack of a smile. "It's said that he is clad in all black and he rides around on a black steed, hence the name. He threatens to behead little children if they are caught misbehaving out in public with a swing of his scythe and he was described as having no head." She continued on with further explaining the legend.
Noriko wasn't sure what all they had been told about their mission but she was sure they weren't told the old legend. It had almost made her laugh when she first got a report of this thing running about the town. The black rider was real and it was running around beheading just about anyone it could? She had thought it was all a load of bullshit but she had soon become to believe it. She hadn't witnessed it beheading anyone but reports she kept getting were all the same. Clad in black and riding a motorcycle that sounds almost like a horse while it beheads people using a scythe-like object. That was the legend almost to a T and it almost terrified her.
"As you might have realized or been told. The thing that has been running around in Tokyo is being referred to as the same creature from the legend." Noriko said getting to the point she was trying to with telling them both the legend.

Ah, so it was an old wives tale of sorts. That made sense. However it didn’t sound anything like what Misaki had thought up, although she supposed that Noriko may just be humoring her. This thing didn’t sound too scary; then again she wasn’t a little kid. To a grade school kid, the story was probably terrifying enough to induce nightmares, or so Misaki thought. If it rode around on a headless horse as was being described, then catching was definitely going to be a bit of an issue. Misaki knew her Vespa was fast but she’d never tried to tail a horse on it before and wasn’t sure if the piece of machinery would be able to keep up. If all else failed they could probably follow it on foot something although that didn’t seem very likely. Misaki was already imagining her and Dion chasing the thing around Tokyo on the Vespa. It would be glorious,
What’s more, was that there was no mention of scalpels or doctors, although a scythe did seem a bit problematic. Misaki wasn’t worried about being able to dodge or block once they finally caught the thing, she was more concerned about trying to duck under a giant blade while on a Vespa. She could think more about strategy and whatnot when they actually went after the thing and gave chase, if it didn’t find them first that is. Misaki continually glanced out the window, looking for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary. It wasn’t that Tokyo put her on edge; it was that she was itching to go after the Kishin Egg. A headless horse with a headless rider seemed like quite the interesting opponent in her mind,
“Headless dude wearing black riding a headless horse and beheading people. Sounds like any good legend used to petrify unruly children.”
Misaki figured it could be way worse. The damned thing could ride around on a headless cow, then they’d really be in trouble. As Noriko mentioned that the Kishin Egg was being referred to as the legend within Tokyo, Misaki tilted her head,
“You say that like there are differences between the legend itself and what’s actually running amok in the city. Is its method of killing different or something?”
With any luck the stupid thing wouldn’t be on horseback, but Misaki doubted that. From how Noriko was talking, it probably still was riding around on something, she just hoped it was something slow like a lawnmower so they could catch it without too much trouble, not that she was opposed to a dramatic chase scene through the streets of Tokyo. The idea actually excited her since there had to be tons of crazy and haphazard shortcuts along alleyways and such but they weren’t here to tear up the pavement. Maybe another time.

On the edge of listening to the conversation Dion wasn’t paying too much attention until Noriko started talking again. Blah blah legend to scare children whatever. He didn’t care about the legend so much as he cared about the kishin. Finally she was getting into some description of this thing! Alright so it was something in all black that rode a horse and had no head? Well that sounded like fun! One scythe seemed like such an easy thing to deal with compared to a bunch of flying scalpels. A scythe could be blocked and depending on how big it was they might even have a length advantage.
Thinking about what she said Dion was wondering about the kishin more. Was the horse part of it or a separate entity? Hopefully it wasn’t too hard to kill either. With it not having a head they couldn’t rely on zombie rules and go for the head. If they were lucky it would be vulnerable to human weak points and they might be able to go with a simple and clean stab through the heart. That was pretty much what spears were used for anyway so this may end up working in their favor.
What did she mean by referred to? Sure it wasn’t the actual legend but wouldn’t it be considered such anyway by those who knew about it? Maybe it wasn’t exactly the same as the legend which could make it easier or harder depending on what parts were changed. Based on the name of the mission and what it was being called Dion figured it was still headless and still rode something. So it might not be riding a horse and be on something else. It also might not have a scythe and be wielding some other weapon. Maybe it was a sword and would be so much easier as such, or it could be a gun or something and be infinitely harder. Maybe they would be lucky and the only difference was that it was wearing some bright orange suit or something.
Misaki was thinking the same thing as he was. Though perhaps her idea was a bit narrower than his was. It wasn’t that important as Noriko was most likely going to explain things anyway so they would still be able to fight whatever it was properly.
”Yeah, what’s different between the legend and the thing that’s been going around?”
As long as they could find the kishin after they knew this it was as good as dead. Hopefully the actual finding would be easy and the fighting would be over quickly. One good impalement should do it and if it didn’t there was always their resonance. A stab through the chest while they resonated should destroy much of anything in an explosion of awesome! If it didn’t he wasn’t sure what exactly would.

This was getting somewhere and so was their trip. The traffic hadn't been nearly as bad as she might have been expecting it to be. Most people were taking notice of the black rider and were trying to get out before he become a major problem. Just the same old same old of people trying to save their asses before they had it handed to them. Even if she was a police officer and her job was to protect them it didn't mean she couldn't criticize them in her mind.
The traffic as she had noticed was a lot more tame than it had been when she was trying to get to the airport. It was a lot easier to get where she was going and to get these two to the headquarters. One more stop light and they would be good to go and ready to head out if they got a report. She had told them to radio her if anything came up so if she had to she'd go after it in her car. That wouldn't be a problem right? A motorcycle against a car? She saw no problem with this.
It seemed that she did have some of those outrageous bones in her deep deep down. Her thinking of racing after a fiend on a motorcycle reminded her of those times when Natsuki was still here in Tokyo. She zoomed around on her vespa way too much and way too fast for her. She always seemed to be too fast and too clever to be caught by them though. The girl in the back seat vaguely reminded her of her younger cousin as well in her looks but several things were different. The vespa had hit her a lot more than she had expected it too and it made her wonder if she was just as bad a driver of it like her cousin.
Misaki made a comment about the legend she had just told the both of them about. Saying that it sounded like a good thing to use to petrify unruly children. It really was. She didn't know many children that didn't quake when they heard the tale of the black rider but this was just ridiculous. It should never have been brought to life and not in this manner. It was just going to make a lot of people scared to leave their houses and it already had. Can't be beheaded if you never leave your house after all.
The last stoplight was behind them just as they two seemed to realize the the way she had said that its referred to as the black rider. Misaki was the first to actually ask what she meant by it being referred to as the same. They both wanted to know what the differences were between the legend and the thing that was roaming the city. Dion was the next one to speak up about it and ask what was different between the two. She didn't answer right off the bat and instead pulled into the parking lot of the headquarters and parked before turning around to the two of them to look at them directly.
"The black rider that's running a muck right now rides a motorcycle that whinnies like a horse and wears a black helmet to hide the fact that he has no head. I haven't actually seen him myself but eye witness accounts are saying that's what he appears as. He weilds a scythe and is prone to appearing in crowded places." Noriko explained to them the differences although small still there. "Welcome to the headquarters by the way." She continued as she shut off the car and got out of the car to wait for them and head into the station.

She and Dion appeared to be on the same page, not that this surprised the tiny Japanese girl. Misaki was curious as to how exactly the Kishin Egg was different from the legend. She hoped it was different in a good way like it just looked more modern rather than a bad difference which may include it using something like chainsaw or a machine gun instead of a scythe. They’d take it on regardless, but her imagination was running wild with possibilities of what exactly they’d be facing.
Whilst awaiting an answer from Noriko, Misaki leaned sideways a bit to peer around the front passenger seat. For Tokyo, the traffic was nowhere near as bad as she expected it to be. Maybe everyone was staying inside or had already heard the rumors of a headless lunatic running around killing people and run for the hills. That was her theory at least. Either that or aliens had swooped down and suddenly abducted half the cars on the road. That sounded much more interesting, if highly improbable. Another plus was that if the traffic wasn’t too bad, it’d make chasing after the Kishin Egg on her Vespa far easier.
Thinking a bit more about that, Misaki also tried to think up a way to safely wield a spear while riding a Vespa. Most of the scenarios in her head that she came up with ended badly with her in the hospital and the Kishin Egg prancing off into the distance cackling. She wasn’t sure if it could actually laugh or anything, but this was an issue she needed to figure out. The best option she could think of was to just have Dion hold off on changing into his Weapon form until they actually caught the damn thing, however they wound up doing that.
Upon hearing Noriko’s answer, though, things became more complicated in her mind. Misaki pursed her lips. A motorcycle. Well, that may be a bit of a problem. Her Vespa was fast, but if the Kishin Egg decided to go full throttle, they’d never catch it. Her mind then jumped to the possibility of somehow boxing it in and keeping the so-called black rider from being able to get to the road. At least if he appeared in crowded places he should be easy to find. There was no shortage of crowded places, this was Tokyo after all. Besides, a whinnying motorcycle and a scythe tend to stick out in a crowd. Misaki let a grin spread across her face,
“Sounds like he’ll be easy to spot at least!”
Misaki had been too deep in thought to notice that they’d actually arrived at their destination. She nodded in recognition to Noriko’s words and exited the vehicle, taking a moment to look around the parking lot. Blinking at the building, Misaki looked to the police woman again,
“Is there anything else that particularly sticks out about the black rider? Does it speak or throw scalpels or anything like that?”
She doubted it, but it never hurt to check. One could never be too careful after all. It would be most helpful if there was a specific crowded place that the Kishin Egg kept showing up at, but she assumed Noriko would inform them of that.

Dion would have expected there to be much more traffic than they were seeing. It was a pretty major city after all. There should be at least a closer amount to what he was used to seeing in New York, cars taking up all the space provided to them and then some. He guessed that the lack of suffocating traffic was at least partially due to the threat of the kishin around the city. Not that he could really blame them for being extra cautious. Not many people want to worry about the constant threat of decapitation when they go out for a short walk.
Well if that was the case they would just have to get rid of the kishin even more so. He couldn’t leave a city so scarcely filled in good conscious. On the plus side it did mean that they could get to their destination faster and in turn kill the kishin faster so no complaints from him there. By now most of the fatigue from not getting that much sleep was replaced by adrenaline from his excitement. This mission was going to make up for how much they fucked up on the last one. This kishin just got really fucking unlucky that they were the ones coming to kill him.
He slightly zoned out while the others were talking about the black rider as he had no clue what it was. Only listening to the conversation slightly he picked up bits here and there. Supposedly it was some kind of creature meant to scare kids or something. It was probably a good thing he didn’t know about it when he was younger or he would have spent quite a few nights running around the city trying to find the black rider. What did he have to worry about? It didn’t sound like the thing could ride up walls so he was in the clear!
It looked like they were headed toward some building that must have been the police station so they could finally get some good info about this thing and start looking for it. Noriko seemed to realize this as well and explained what they would be dealing with. So, this black rider kishin thing was actually like the more bad ass version of the legend one? That was more than alright with him! All this meant was that they got to take out some motorcycle.
Now that she had explained what this kishin was it sounded more familiar to him. Sure there was some artistic difference in this thing but to him it sounded like some other story he had heard. Well as long as it was more like the Japanese one, they should be fine. Dion looked out the window to see around them and try to get an idea about the area. All he could really tell was that it was the parking lot of the police headquarters so that was pretty useless. Along with the others he got out of the car and looked around some more, nope still nothing.
”Sounds kinda like an amped up headless horseman. Well as long as it doesn’t throw his head at us it should be a piece of cake! Even if he does I’m sure we can handle one little ranged move.”
Not that swatting heads out of the air was on the top of Dion’s priorities but if he had to it could be done. Aside from that possibility the only other issue was the scythe and speed. If they headed toward it instead of racing it and managed to avoid the scythe one good resonance slash should take care of everything.
Misaki had the right idea asking about other specialties but Dion wasn’t that concerned. They knew next to nothing about the last kishin they fought and they still kicked his ass! The only thing knowing would do was prevent the odd injury here and there. Walking over to stand next to his meister he waited to see what they were doing now. Just walking into the headquarters and getting this shit figured out would be the best course of action from his perspective. The sooner they killed this thing the sooner he could get another soul!

Maybe that would make him easier to spot. She hadn't really thought of it like that. She was surely taken a bit aback by the Japanese girl's response to what she had told them about the differences. It wasn't something a normal person would say that was for sure. It sounded more like something her cousin would say. This girl really was starting to remind her of Natsuki so badly.
Dion's response was a bit baffling too although she was sure she didn't know what he was talking about. Something about a headless horsemen, which was not something she had heard of. She figured it might just be the difference of cultures and what not. She hadn't studied other cultures all that much to really know for sure especially not lore. The head throwing was not something she thought they had reported to her. It didn't sound familiar so it was probably just because of that lore that he said that. Funny people these Americans.
"Didn't have any reports of it throwing its head at people. It doesn't have one." Noriko said with a tilt of her head and then she was out of the vehicle like nobody's business.
As she waited for the two students to make their way out of the car she walked around to the back of it. It was probably a good idea for them to remove her vespa before they went inside the building just in case. There was no telling when the black rider would show up again and they needed to be ready for that. Worst case scenario was that someone else would lose their head and she didn't want that. Although it probably would have been quicker if she had popped the trunk while she had still been in the car.
Even though she was the chief of this distract, they didn't seem to have enough of a budget to afford a key chain trunk button. It didn't really bother her or at least not at the moment. All the budget in the world couldn't make her job any easier. She was a police officer and she had to deal with low down scum bags almost everyday but more money wouldn't necessarily make it any better. She exhaled slowly as she unlocked the trunk and opened it up so that the vespa could be pulled out.
Noriko would let Misaki do that part since it was her vespa and she didn't want to end up damaging it or something. She recalled the one time she had to transport Natsuki's vespa and ended up scratching it when taking it out. Her younger cousin didn't let her hear the end of it and make her feel downright terrible about it. No, she didn't want to end up doing that again even if it wasn't her cousin's vespa. There was no risking it.
Misaki exited the vehicle not too far behind her and so did her partner. She took a step away from the trunk and gestured that the vespa that was cozy inside it as she started to grab a cigarette from her pocket. This black rider stuff was really wearing on her and her cigarettes helped her relax. She looked over at Misaki when she heard her ask a couple more questions about the black rider. Something else that stuck out other than the act that he rode a whining motorcycle and had a weird black scythe? Not that she had heard of.
"Not that I'm aware of. The reports only included the stuff I said about the motorcycle and his scythe. No scalpels nor can it talk from what I know." Noriko said answering her questions with a wave of her hand. "Go ahead and get your vespa out. Once your done we'll head inside. My men might have more information and the crime scene photos..." She continued as she light up the cigarette and took a puff off of it.

The headless horseman idea hadn’t crossed Misaki’s mind, but it certainly sounded similar now that she thought about it. Luckily Noriko was quick to dismiss any suspicions of the Kishin Egg tossing its head around at people which was good. Misaki wasn’t very good at baseball, she’d hate to hit the thing and then have it wind up flying into some poor innocent bystander. That would be highly problematic. With that scenario pretty much ruled as something that wasn’t going to happen, Misaki walked to the back of the car and stood anxiously by the trunk waiting for Noriko to open it. She wasn’t usually possessive or sentimental when it came to personal items, but her Vespa was her baby. Plus they would need it to catch the Kishin Egg, so she was just a little eager to get it back on the asphalt even if they weren’t hunting the thing down just yet.
Thankfully Misaki didn’t have to wait long. She was more surprised that the car Noriko drove was of such an old make and model that there wasn’t a button that just popped the trunk and that she actually had to open it with a key. Maybe it was budget cuts. Yeah, budget cuts. Misaki didn’t really know much about those types of things, just that her dad loved to complain about them every so often. The tiny Japanese girl bounced on her heels until she could see the lovely piece of machinery nestled snugly in the trunk. Once Noriko stepped back, and looked it over once before putting her hands on it. She had to figure out if it had shifted during the drive before actually trying to pull it out; it’d be bad to accidentally break something. Misaki placed the Vespa on the ground beside her and leaned with her hands on the handle bars. She fully intended to take it with her into the police department. If anything they should just be thankful she wasn’t planning to drive it in through the front doors.
As she did this, Noriko was of course providing her with answers to the questions she asked. No scalpels was excellent, that would tone down on the mental scarring they may or may not take home with them one the mission was over which was always a plus. Misaki really wasn’t in the mood for any more nightmares about being pinned down and dissected by some crazed Australian psycho. Apparently all she knew of the repors was what she’d told them so far with the motorcycle, the scythe, and of course the chopping off of heads. Well, that was something. The Kishin Egg still didn’t seem like it’d be something all that hard to find or even deal with from Misaki’s perspective.
Information and crime scene photos. The information Misaki was totally down with, the crime scene photos may or may not have made her a bit, well, nervous. It wasn’t that she couldn’t handle blood and guts and gore, no, it was more the fact that she had kinda sorta lost her lunch on the last mission. Then again, seeing actual dead bodies strewn across a field in varying states of decay and dismemberment was different than just seeing pictures of them, so she supposed it wouldn’t be quite so bad. Still, she made a mental note to document all locations of the nearest bathrooms and garbage cans in case her stomach did decide that it still couldn’t handle corpses. Misaki would have loved to say that she could handle things like that better now, but she wasn’t absolutely sure so the thought remained in the back of her mind.
With her Vespa back on solid ground, Misaki looked to Noriko and then to Dion,
“I’m ready when you guys are. The more we know about this thing the better.”
The tiny Japanese girl leaned on the handle bars a bit more but the Vespa started to tilt so she eased up on it. Her first instinct was really to cling to it but she figured it would be better to not act quite as weird as she really was around the policewoman. Then again being on one’s best behavior around the police was generally a good idea, but still.

Well at least Noriko gave him an answer to his statement. It was at least partially reassuring that the kishin they were fighting wasn’t like the headless horseman. The last thing he needed was to become a glorified baseball bat to knock back some severed monster’s head. Especially if it was an easily breakable and messy Jack O’Lantern. Dion was glad he wasn’t going to come out of this mission covered in pumpkin guts; blood was more preferable for the situation. Not having to deal with flying heads of any sort was clearly the best for them. It also meant if it didn’t have a head they couldn’t go for a head shot to kill the thing. Hopefully it wasn’t too immune to normal human deaths.
Following Noriko’s example Dion opened the door and hopped out of the car. Taking the hint from the others he joined them in walking to the back of the car. Standing next to Misaki he waited for his meister to remove the Vespa from the trunk. Misaki didn’t waste much time getting her Vespa out and Noriko even said a few more things that may or may not be useful for the mission. That bit about more information and crime scene photos caught Dion’s interest though.
The more they knew about this kishin the easier it would be to kill. Honestly they knew next to nothing about doctor fuck face on their last mission and they managed to get out of that alr…alive. From what they knew already this black rider seemed simply enough in theory. Of course it would be harder to kill in practice but that was what resonances were for. After hearing all they could about the kishin killing it should be much easier than their last mission, Dion wasn’t planning or running through any clouds of scalpels for a start.
Standing next to his meister Dion was excited for this briefing so they could get started on the hunting. Listening to what Misaki said Dion nodded after her.
”Same, I’d rather know what we’re getting into before the fighting starts.”
