Another day, another trial and error of Dan going up to random students in the meister category and blurting out "Do you wanna be my meister!?" He would shout it out from across the courtyard, and get in people's faces.
"I see Dan is at it again. Wonder how many times he'll have to hear the word no this time." A girl with blond hair muttered to her friend.
However you slice it, it was always the same answer:
"No"
"NO!"
"Hell no!"
"Go jump off the roof!"
After the 50th try, not including the ones he went BACK to and asked "How about now!?", he decided to give up and start walking home to his apartment. He would never let anybody at Shibusen know or see past his usually obnoxious and goofy demeanor, but he was quite sad that nobody seemed to want him as a weapon partner. He was kicking a can down the street, half frustrated and half sad, when he noticed he wasn't alone. Someone was following him from behind. He sighed and stopped in the middle of the sidewalk, hearing the person stop right afterwards.
Turning around just in time for a fist to make contact with his face, he staggered backward with a bleeding lip.
Getting a good look at his attacker, he saw they were not only from Shibusen, but they were someone he'd pranked not too long ago for picking on some girl who was quite shy and quiet. "Oh its you. Well you got your hit in, so get lost." Daniel said, acting uninterested, but really this was something he'd developed himself. A trick to keep an eye on an opponent and throw them off, he'd act like he had no guard up and was totally disconnected from the fight, not really giving a crap. But in reality he was paying attention and waiting to see if and when they'd attack again so he could counter.
Sure enough, after the guy (he couldn't even remember the person's name, not that he cared.) said some uninteresting stuff about how it took him an entire two weeks to get the stuff that Daniel had mixed up out of his hair, (it still looked slightly rainbow colored from the special paint he'd bought and thrown all together in a bucket to dump on his head from above.) The guy pulled out a small knife and rushed Dan, "How about I give you another scar, they say you're already covered in them!"
That was when Dan leaped onto the jerk, knocking him to the ground and pinning his arm that had wielded the knife down, with his foot, he swore he heard something crack when he came down on the dude's wrist. But right now he was really not caring, he leaned in close and grabbed the idiot by the shirt collar so he was glaring furiously into the terrified kid's eyes. "Do you know how I got these? I got them from training hard enough so I could kick the asses of simple thugs like you when they messed with me or my friends. So if you're gonna pull a cowardly move like that, you'd better be prepared to get your ass handed to you."
Dan picked up the knife and threw it onto a nearby rooftop, before sticking his hands back into his pockets and going on his way again, leaving the bully laying on the ground in a terrified state.

Sofie wasn't exactly sure how she had ended up here.
She had a marvelous sense of direction, when she knew the place she was traveling around, but Death City was an altogether new experience for her. So much bigger and busier than what she was used to! Kansas had been tiny and quiet, by comparison. She had known as soon as she'd stepped off the bus that it would take her time to get this place anywhere near mapped out in her mind, but she hadn't thought she'd have to take this long! It might not have been so bad, except that now she was hopelessly lost and, if she were to hazard a guess, nowhere near the school dorms.
Considering that she was outside, it probably wasn't a bad estimate, either.
She wrung her hands and looked around, her brow furrowed, her green eyes wide. She was slumped, a little, her knees together as she examined her surroundings. The tag on the front of her shirt proudly proclaimed her as 'Meister'; she'd been wearing it since she'd gotten here and registered, but thus far, no weapon had seemed altogether interested in having such a shy, uncertain partner. The only people she'd had much contact with so far had been bullies, and those were an entirely new- and terrifying- experience for sheltered Sofie. She'd just run away when she'd seen the opportunity. She didn't feel like she'd seen the last of them, either... which wasn't really the problem at hand. She swayed on her feet, thinking.
"I think I came... from this way? So I should go right, or... ooooh..." she whimpered, turning down an alley, taking careful steps as she did so. She reached up and gripped one of her sidelocks, running her fingers over the hair, tightening the ribbons braided in at the end of it, as she often did when she was growing nervous. Her eyes felt hot with unshed tears, not at all uncommon for her, and especially not in these circumstances. "Or was it... left. Why does this place have to be so big...?" then she groaned, and shook her head.
"It isn't because this place is big, it's because I'm just useless. I can't even find my way back to my room, oh, god, how am I supposed to be a meister? Why did I think it was a good idea?! I'm terrible, I'm awful, I'll never be any use to anyone, why would this have ever have worked out, why- oof!" she had been so caught up in her nervous self down-putting that she hadn't noticed the boy lying in the street, clutching his arm and shaking. Her foot hit his side and she tripped right over him, landing on the ground in front of him. Groaning, she sat up and turned around. Her eyes widened, and her face paled. She remembered this boy. This was the one who'd told her that her hair looked stupid and threatened to cut it all off. Subsequently, he was also the bully she'd spent a long time escaping from.
Panic flared. Sofie shot to her feet and, like some sort of terrified hare, bolted off. She glanced over her shoulder briefly, as if to assure herself that he wasn't following. She couldn't get caught, she could not get caught, she only had so much hair left, if she stopped he might get up and come after her with that knife and cut her hair or do something worse, she couldn't let it happen, she had to run, had to-
"Agfh!"
...had to really start paying attention to where she was running to.
She ran headlong into Daniel, at full speed; the force of the impact was enough to send her to the ground. She winced and rubbed her head as she sat up, for a moment altogether uncertain of what she'd hit. When she looked up and saw that it was a person- not someone she knew, thankfully, but a strange, which was a little bit worse, when she thought about it- she yelped and lifted her hands, worry and terror crossing her face at the same moment.
"I'm so sorry!" she squeaked out, trying- and failing- to get to her feet, in her panic. "I duh-didn't see you a-and I wasn't... I didn't muh-mean to knock you o-over or... don't be m-mad, please, oh, god, I'm a-awful, I can't do this, I c-can't, how am I supposed to..." she gripped both sidelocks and tugged, as if hoping the slight pain of hair pulling might help her to form coherent sentences.

Daniel at first thought that either the idiot he'd just scared the pants off of stupidly had come back for more. Or had arranged for one of his buddies to ambush him from behind while he was outside of his apartment. So he turned around, fully prepared to face down another aggressor, only instead he saw a girl pulling on her twin braids of hair and blubbering apologies to him repeatedly and something about how worthless she was.
Wait a minute, he recognized this chick, this was the very girl that jerk back there had been picking on! His face softened, he realized he had been looking quite angry for awhile and probably scared her to death when he whirled around looking like he was ready to kick her ass. Crouching down to her down on the ground, he tilted his head to the side and blinked at her as she continued to blubber.
"Umm...you don't have to apologize, I'm fine. I'm actually more worried about you."
That was when he happened to glance over the girl's shoulder, and see two tall guys brandishing switchblades coming out of alley. "You hurt our buddy Rocki, now we're gonna make sure your little girlfriend over there gets every last hair on her head cut off! And as for you, Rocki told us to just break your fingers so you won't be playing guitar no more." The one with the shades and the disgusting looking purple mohawk said, gesturing toward the two of them with his knife.
Daniel stepped in front of the girl, blocking her from the two thugs' view. He quietly dropped his housekeys into her lap and thumbed to his apartment across the way, "Its 204" He mouthed just loud enough, before making a shooing motion with his hand and winking with a smirk.

There was a brief moment, between her stuttering and rambling, where Sofie thought she was most definitely going to die.
The moment he turned, she knew she was done for, and she braced herself when he leaned down, waiting for him to... hit her, or shove her, or whatever it was mean people did when you accidentally ran into them. Instead, he spoke, and not in the harsh, angry tones she had expected to come. His voice was... calm, and a little confused, and he told he was fine and she didn't need to worry. She breathed a sigh of relief; aside from fearing for an impending onslaught of fury, she had also been concerned that she had accidentally hurt him. She didn't much care for hurting people... or, rather, had never been good at it. And, so far as she knew, this boy hadn't done anything to her, to warrant her wishing him injured.
He said he was worried for her, and she blinked slowly, her mouth closing as she swallowed this piece of information. More worried for her? What for? She was utterly worthless, she'd gone and run into him, so why was he concerned? It was her fault. "Um-" she opened her mouth, perhaps to stammer out a response, when she heard the sound of footsteps behind her. She turned, and swallowed heavily. She recognized these boys, too. Even at Shibusen, one didn't see people walking around with bright purple mohawks... well, not often, anyway.
Cut off her hair. They were threatening to cut off her hair and break his fingers. She glanced at him- what had he done to irritate them, after all?- and then whimpered, holding her braids almost protectively. "Nooo." she whined, pitifully, certain that this was the end, and that she'd be walking around bald for the rest of her life. Then the boy she'd run into dropped something in her lap, whispered a number, and winked at her. She looked down. Keys.
Keys to a door.
A door to an apartment.
204.
Oh.
Her mind was racing; she was scared, but she was smart, too, and in the brief time she had, she was struggling to come up with a plan that wouldn't end with her bald and him with broken fingers. He'd given her his keys. He wanted her to go to his apartment. For what? Did he need something? Maybe his partner? But he'd have said, wouldn't he have? Or just called for them. So why his keys. Why would he want her to...
Oh. Oh.
He wanted her to go inside so she'd be safe. It was fairly obvious from her demeanor and appearance that hand to hand fighting was not her forte. He was telling her to hide while he fought. For her.
Her eyes sparkled with stars as she peered up at him, tears from their first meeting drying on her cheeks.
Like a knight in her stories.
Then she blinked, and shook her head, and forced herself shakily to her feet. She couldn't do much in the way of fighting, but she could run; she turned tail and hared off into his apartment building, bolting up the stairs like a gazelle on speed and skidding to a halt in front of his door. Her hands shook and trembled as she forced the key into the lock and turned it, slipping inside. She shut the door behind her and locked it tight. Then she meandered nervously, looking around, unsure of what to do now. She spotted a window that overlooked the street; she hurried over and peered out, catching sight of the scene below.
Her heart pounded in her chest. She swallowed hard, then moaned, gripping her sidelocks and tugging again. What kind of idiot coward just left someone to fight their battles for her?! She was absolute trash, worthless, cowardly trash! She should have done something, instead of just... just abandoning him to face to armed opponents! She pressed her face and hands against the window and watched anxiously, eyes wide.

"It don't matter where you hide her, we'll still cut them braids off her head." The thug on Daniel's left taunted as he tossed his knife back and forth between his hands excitedly.
Dan struck out with his fist, his rage at these thugs and all their filthy bullying kind powering into the thug's jaw. A tooth could be seen flying through the air as the young man fell to the street, clutching his bleeding mouth.
He could've heard the second one coming up to stab him from a mile away the douche was being so loud. Dan whipped around and delivered a kick to the second mohawk's ribs, stopping him in his tracks as he clutched his side in pain.
Danny swiftly moved in, delivering a punch to the bully's nose in a spray of blood beneath his fist, sending him sprawling to the ground.
Now that both thugs were on the ground and out of commission, Dan picked up one of the blades and got an evil idea.
He did exactly what they threatened to do to Sofie, only, they'll probably thank him for it, now that they're rid of those dreadful looking mohawks.
Daniel tossed away the blade and tossed their whimpering and moaning forms into a nearby smelly dumpster full of old noodles and who knows what else was down there emitting that foul stench.
He dusted his hands off and walked back up to his apartment, knocking on the door and saying in a soft voice "Its ok! You can let me in now, hehe."

He... he was fighting back. He wasn't running away. More than that- he was winning, despite the difference in numbers, and the fact that he didn't have a weapon. They had knives, and he was still winning! Fascinated, Sofie pressed her face further against the glass, unconsciously making a silly face as she stared. She had never seen anything like this before. If it had been her, she would have run and found a place to hide. In fact, that was exactly what she had done. But he... this boy was standing his ground and fighting and winning, and for a brief moment, she could feel his soul, even from this distance.
Sofie decided then and there that he was an impossible sort of person.
It was like a character from one of her books had stepped right out of the pages and come to her rescue, when she had thought for sure he was going to hurt her for running into him in the first place. He had protected her. It felt... different, from when her mother had 'protected' her from danger. That had felt... wrong, somehow, left her sad and alone. This... she wasn't quite sure, but she thought it might be making her soul flutter. It was certainly a fascinating situation. She wasn't entirely sure how to deal with it. How did one handle such brand new experiences...
His voice at the door brought her out of her momentary stupor. She shook her head, blinking rapidly, and turned. She hurried over to the door and unlocked it, opening it up and staring at him. She felt a little breathless. She wasn't sure why- the running? It had never tired her out before- but she inhaled slowly and looked up, slowly, until she met his gaze. She didn't seem to know what to say, at first... which, she supposed, was common enough with her. She never really knew what to say. Even when she did, it never came out properly, not in front of other people. She swallowed hard and took a deep breath.
She should thank him for helping her. She should offer to pay him back for it. She should... she should really stop staring at him with an open mouth, like some kind of beached fish. Say something proper. Something polite. He had saved her, he deserved thanks, she had to-
"Sofie."
It came out as a faint croak from her throat. She flushed red and lifted a hand to cover her mouth. He hadn't asked her name, why would he care, that was not expressing gratitude, oh, god, she was such a total moron. She swallowed hard and tried to force down the lump in her throat. Talking was difficult. She didn't see how people made a living off of it, sometimes.
"I-i mean, uh, my n-name, it's..." she wrung her hands nervously, reached up to toy with her braids. "...I meant... t-to say thanks. I meant, I didn't... why... how did you... d-do that...?" she wasn't sure he understood any of it, most of it had come out mumbled and embarrassed, but that was as good as it was going to get. Any more effort and she would probably pass out.

He grinned, her shyness was cute in a way, not that he intended on leaving the bachelor scene anytime soon. When she said her name he smiled and gave her his "Mine's Daniel, but you can call me Dan."
"And don't mention it, those guys were asking for it when they threatened you and kept picking at you. I don't like bullies." His expression turned dark for a flicker of a second, but then was back to his cheerful self.
"As for how I did that, you mind us going inside for that? Its kind of a chilly night and besides, you miiight wanna stick around here for awhile...at least for the night. Those idiots may have gotten a good lesson from my end of it. But that might not stop them from looking to pick on you." He said, gently leading her into his home before shutting and locking the door against any intruders seeking revenge.
"Mind if we talk some more over some food? You're probably hungry after that ordeal, I know I am, hehe. I might not have much to offer in the way of fancy cuisine but its enough for me...and perhaps a guest now and then." He called to her from his small kitchen as he prowled around in the cupboards.
On a stand in the corner there was his personal guitar, this stood next to the sofa in the living room, which was placed just in front of the television, perfect for vegging out.
Down the hall there was the kitchen, where in the microwave on the counter next to the sink and stove/oven, two bowls of canned Chef Boyardee lasagna were being heated up.
Further down the hall was the bathroom and two bedrooms, one for a guest and the other for Daniel himself.
Ding!
Danny came out and placed the two bowls of lasagna onto a table with two chairs across from each other. "Careful, its hot. And as for how I did that, I'm a purple belt in Jiu-jitsu, plus I'm not too bad at just plain ol' street fighting either. Now I have a question for you, see, I couldn't help but notice you're a meister," He pointed to her nametag, "Ya see, I'm a weapon, and I haven't had much luck finding a meister. So uh.....would you like to tryout how compatible we are sometime?" For the first time, Daniel seemed nervous.

Everything about him was... something. There was a word for it, but Sofie wasn't quite sure what it was. Headstrong? Maybe, but not in this situation. Stubborn, perhaps, though she didn't know that for sure. She was positive there was a way to describe the feeling she got from this boy- Daniel, he'd said, Dan for short. What was it? Something like...
Bold. He was very, very bold. She wasn't sure what to do with bold.
He started talking, and he didn't stop, even when her face turned bright red at the suggestion that she stay the night. She followed him inside, regardless, pausing for only a moment to question whether it was smart to go into a strange boy's home with him... although, if he'd intended her harm, he probably wouldn't have been so pleasant, right? Those bullies hadn't been nice like this, and she knew they'd wanted to hurt her. So, by comparison, if he was kind... well, it didn't matter. She was already here. Worst case was that she'd have to jump out a window, which presented a whole new set of worried thoughts. By the time she looked up, he was heating up food for the both of them.
She tried to stammer something- she didn't need food, she couldn't pay him for it, he didn't need to trouble himself- but it was already heated and on the table, and he was sitting down, and it would have been incredibly rude not to join him when he'd asked. She settled into the seat opposite him and peered down at the canned lasagna. Mother had never let her eat food from a can- it could be full of nasty things, she'd claimed, that would make her sick until she died. Sofie had never been brave enough to test it... but she also didn't want to upset the person who'd been so kind to her. She picked up a fork and took a hesitant bite.
It wasn't... that bad, actually.
She ate in nervous silence, wondering why on earth he was doing this, when he spoke again. She almost choked on her food; she swallowed it down, dropping her fork and turning wide green eyes to look up at him. She stared at him, unsure of how to answer. Test their compatibility? As in... as in, he wanted her to be his Meister, if she could? Why would he want that? She was dumbfounded by the idea that anyone, particularly this courageous and bold boy named Daniel, might take any interest in her abilities- or lack thereof- whatsoever.
She hesitated, and then looked down at her lap. She curled her fingers together, shifting a little in her seat. "I don't..." she started, then winced and tried to calm herself. Her chest felt tight. "...I'm not... not very... I don't think you really want... that." at least the last part of that had made sense. She shook her head, lifting a hand to rub her upper arm, nervous. "Because I... I'm really... sort of... useless." she sighed softly. Well, she'd told him, he had to have known it, anyway. She expected he'd ask her to leave, now.
She didn't deserve to be here...

Daniel blinked, not sure he'd heard her correctly at first, he waited a few moments before replying. "I don't think you're useless. And ya know what, you shouldn't either. I'm sure you've got a lot of talent just waiting to come out!" He grinned at her, his usual upbeat self, it was as if he hadn't given two thugs the beating of their lives just a short while ago.
He continued to speak, "And I think I really do want you as my meister, you seem nice and pretty cool. My mind is made up on that, so long as you're on board that is."
Once Dan had finished the last of his food, he stood up and stretched before gesturing over to a nearby bookshelf that was literally crammed with medium to large to massive hardback and paperback novels.
"Like to read? I've got a lot of fantasy and horror stuff in there ranging from some of the classics to the more modern stuff. Stephen King stuff, different Tolkien works including the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogy. Also I think the Hunger Games trilogy is in there, also have the Inheritance Cycle that I bought online in a box set. I've got the Song of Ice and Fire books up until the newest one. And of course there are the classics like Watership Down, Treasure Island, and the Sherlock Holmes collection." Daniel explained each set and book in his collection in that shelf as if it were a precious treasure to him, and judging by the way they were kept on that bookshelf, they probably were. But that didn't mean a guest or his soon to be meister couldn't borrow them.

He was impossibly happy and he was... probably just trying to be nice. He said he didn't think she was useless, but she was sure that, given time, he'd see it the same as everyone else. Either that, or he had seen it already, and was being polite. She wondered if she ought to correct him, but- too late, he was already getting up. She bent down and hurried to finish her food, as soon as his back was turned; she couldn't just leave food in the bowl! Mother had always hated that. Other people probably did, too.
Nice, and pretty cool... he must have been crazy. She was anything like 'cool'. She turned to watch him, and then raised her eyebrows when he asked if she wanted to read.
Interest peaked, she was about to ask him what he had, content to look over whatever he had and not complain, when he started listing off different books. The collection was enough to make her eyes sparkle again, and she took a deep breath, glancing over the bookshelf and letting her eyes scan the titles. All of them were there, just like he'd said. It was too good to be true. She hadn't been able to bring all of her books with her, to Shibusen, and her little collection in the dorms was pitiful, compared to what she'd had before. The sight of so many good books... it almost brought a tear to her eye.
Sofie stood and worked her hands in front of herself, trying to think of what to say. 'Thank you' didn't seem like it was enough. She shifted back and forth on her feet, then looked up.
"I... I like... to read." she managed, finally. She kicked herself- idiot! "I-i mean, uhm... th-thank you for... for letting me... a-and, you know, and for... the food..." she sighed softly. Words were easy to read... difficult to find. Worse yet, to actually say. She looked down at her feet, her brow furrowed, working her bottom lip between her teeth.
"I'm not... not really all that good at anything." she sighed out. "And I d-don't know if... if I'd be... any kind of decent Meister. But I could... I could try..." she looked up. "If that's what you wanted." she did owe him, after all; he'd been exceedingly kind to her, for whatever reason. Maybe he just wanted his meister to make him look better by comparison.

Daniel nodded with a smile, so she was a little shy and wasn't too good with words, so what? He was sure she'd come out of her shell if she started hanging around him more, he tended to have that effect on people. Dan picked up the bowls and took them to the kitchen sink, "Feel free to pick one out! I don't mind so long as you keep them in good condition!" He called to her over the sound of running water.
Once the bowls were cleaned and dried off with a dishcloth, he went back into the living room to talk to her some more. "I'll start by telling you a bit about myself, then you can tell me some things about you!" He smiled at her in a genuine way before he began to tell her what kind of weapon he was, an electric guitar. "Kinda like that one only a different shape." He pointed over to his own guitar over in the corner. He also told her that he liked to play music on that guitar in his spare time, even wandering around Shibusen with it and playing. He told her about the bands he liked, what different genres of music he'd listen to, hell he even included the fact that he liked musicals and that was something he didn't dare tell anyone unless they were a good buddy of his and were certain not to laugh.
Once he was finished, he gestured toward her to signal it was time for her to speak, "Your turn!"

They sat on the couch- Sofie took a spot on the opposite end of it, since she wasn't so sure she wanted to be any closer to... well, anyone. Sofie had never much cared for offhand touches, or, well, thought she probably didn't. Mother hadn't been particularly affectionate. The concept of touching and being touched was foreign and a little uncomfortable, to her.
She listened respectfully to him, when he spoke, didn't laugh when he mentioned that he liked musicals. She looked at the guitar he pointed to, and furrowed her brow; could a guitar be a weapon? That was strange. She supposed if you hit someone with anything hard enough, it could become a weapon... but most Weapons were swords, or even daggers, or hammers... things one conventionally thought of when someone mentioned 'weapons'. She wondered if that was why she could still feel his soul, when others were often silent to her; maybe his was just exceptionally loud.
And he talked a lot about music! It wasn't a bad thing. Sofie had lived a sheltered life, and, although she'd had access to the internet and her books, she'd been limited by whatever strict rules her mother had enforced. There were many things she had never been exposed to, and different genres of music was one of them. She'd never really given it much thought, herself, but to hear him talk about it... she was a little curious. What was music, real music, like? It must have been wonderful, to interest him so.
Then he told her it was her turn, and she paled a little, looking down.
What was there to say about herself? Not much, unfortunately. "Uhm..." she sighed softly. His introduction had been so lively, so vibrant, and by comparison, her own person seemed... less than usual. And that was saying something, truly. She traced abstract patterns against her knees and bit her bottom lip, thinking.
"I, uhm... I'm from... Kansas." that was a good start, she supposed. "A-and I'm... sixteen. And I like... I like books. Fantasy novels, m-mostly..." nervously, she reached up and stroked the sidelock on her left. There wasn't much more to her, was there? Except, maybe... "I-I got my m-mother arrested." she blurted out, for lack of anything better to say, then turned red and clammed up, hunching her shoulders and leaning down a little.

He nodded at every little thing she said, taking the information in. So she was from Kansas and she was sixteen.
"Same age as me." He thought, "Wonder if we share the same birthday, that'd be kinda funny."
She liked fantasy novels, like him, probably not into the scary ones though. He had noticed her eyes got all sparkly when he was naming off all the books and she was looking at his collection. So he had no doubt that she was a book fanatic, it made him glad that he could make her happy, though he couldn't explain why. Maybe it was because he had a very good feeling she was going to work as his meister, she was the first person who'd said ok to his request and that made him feel good too.
Maybe it was because he had a need to protect people who were being bullied, because he was once bullied as well. She was kind of shy and meek, didn't look like she could put up a good fight against an enemy without a decent weapon to back her up. And he felt he was right for the job, so he was going to be that weapon no matter what!
When she said that she got her mom arrested, his first thought was that he had misheard her. Then he saw the expression on her face and gently asked. "What happened?"

Why had she said that? For the love of Death, why had she said that?! Inwardly, she groaned, and leaned forwards a little bit, wishing that a hole would open up in the floor of his apartment and swallow her whole.
Well... she had opened this topic up. Basic manners said she didn't have much choice but to continue, and explain. She couldn't let him think she'd done something like framed her mother for murder! Although... what she'd done had been just as bad, in her opinion. She took a deep breath and looked down at her hands.
"I... um... child... protective services got involved." she said, finally. It felt like admitting failure. Well, she was a failure; might as well say it out loud. "B-because I wanted to... to come to Shibusen and she was worried so sh-she tried to, uhm... stop me." she ran a hand through the hair on the top of her head, feeling the unruly locks kept at bay by her headband. "...she, uhm, she locked m-me in my room for a-awhile and I was... crying, and a n-neighbor heard, and I really shouldn't have... have been crying. Sh-she was just trying to help so I sort of. And then they got... involved and I... I came here, kind of. I didn't... didn't mean to."
She wondered if she'd ever forgive herself for that. Her mother probably wouldn't, wherever she was... Sofie sighed. Well, if her mother didn't forgive her, then what right did she have to forgive herself? It was all her fault, anyway.
"I'm... r-really tired. Should I, um, s-sleep on the couch, or...?" she didn't want to think about this anymore. She wished she'd never said anything to begin with, but it had just slipped out. Another failing, on her part.

With every word of explanation, it became more clear to Daniel, who was putting the pieces together in his head. He wasn't stupid, no matter what some of his peers at Shibusen may think due to his spontaneous and sometimes obnoxious nature. "Her mother was a control freak, that's why she's so quiet and timid." When she got to the part about being locked in her room for so long and crying where a neighbor had to call social services, he felt his fists tighten and his teeth grind against each other.
"She said she shouldn't have been crying. Don't tell me she blames herself?" He closed his eyes and took a deep breath to calm himself down.
He made sure after she mentioned something about sleeping on the couch, that he stood up and made a conscious effort to wipe the angry look off his face. When he realized it probably wasn't working, he decided to just reassure her before showing her to the guest bedroom.
"I may look angry right now, Sofie. But I promise its not directed toward you, I'm just angry because someone in your past has treated you in such a way. You didn't deserve any of that kind of treatment at all. No one deserves to be treated that way, especially by their own mother. I want you to know that you didn't do anything wrong, and you can't go around carrying this sense of guilt with you, it'll eat you up. I'm not saying stop loving your mother, but take a long hard look at what she did when you were with her, and ask yourself if you think it was in your best interest."
He stood up from the couch, began making his way down the hall, but stopped and said without turning around. "By the way, you should be happy to be here at Shibusen, I know I'm glad you are." He continued walking down the hall, gesturing to the first room on his right, "Bathroom is here."
Then he came to the end of the hall and gestured to the two rooms across from each other in the hall, "Guest bedroom is here on the left, my room is on the right. I've made up a bed in the guest for a potential meister just in case." He grinned at her. "Guess it'll finally be put to some use."
