There was a part of Sofie that wanted to accept his words, to take them and believe them... but it was a very small part, and quickly overridden by the pieces of her that said he was just being nice, that it was impossible that this whole thing wasn't entirely her fault, that even he must see that. She shook her head and sighed softly, wondering why she had even brought it up in the first place. It wasn't like her to speak so easily with strangers... if what she had done could be called 'speaking easily'. Maybe it was because he'd been nice.
But it was strange, too; she normally couldn't feel souls for so long. Her Perception ability was untested, at best, and she wasn't ever really sure how she activated it in the first place. In the end, if she really wanted to use it, she suspected it would take a great deal of concentration. But Dan's soul... it almost buzzed. Like a strange, constant hum in her ears, but not really a sound she could hear. Nothing like her mother's soul had been, or any of the other few she had glanced upon before, when her mind wandered.
He really was just an impossible person.
"...thank you." she told him, when he told her where the guest bedroom was. Potential meister, huh? She didn't feel much like one. Daniel deserved someone better than her, someone who could match his strength and... boldness. She felt tiny and shriveled, next to him. Her own soul paled in comparison. What hope did she have of becoming any sort of meister for him? Still, if he really wanted to test it... she wouldn't say no. She couldn't, it wouldn't be polite. Let him see for himself how worthless she really was.
"Uhm... g-goodnight." she said, and nodded at him, then escaped to the bedroom he'd mentioned. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, sighing heavily. Tomorrow was going to be a longer day than today...

The next morning Dan woke up early and took his shower as quietly as possible, making sure not to hum or sing while he bathed, though it was hard, he was by nature a quite musical guy, and part of his routine was to start the day with a particular song. He somewhat cursed the noise of the shower coming on with a hiss, hoping with her door closed Sofie would sleep soundly for at least an hour more.
Once this was done and he was dressed, not for the day, but in an old t-shirt, shorts and most amusingly an apron he didn't mind getting kitchen junk on.
Scratching his head, he quietly muttered to himself. "Hmm...now where was that recipe?"
Daniel was JUST about to say the hell with it and just make them some very un-special bowls of oatmeal, when he saw the recipe he was looking for, had been stuck to the front of the fridge all along. His eye twitched and he snatched it off of its magnet holder, which was a magnetized plastic kitten doing chin ups with the magnet part below its feet that said "Hang in there, baby!"
Grabbing the ingredients from the fridge, almost forgetting the most important one: The blueberries, in his hurry. Daniel started to go about making a very special batch of blueberry pancakes for a very special girl who was soon to be his very special meister.
After he'd made quite the stack of fluffy golden pancakes with blueberries hidden inside them like little treasures. Dan went about carrying the two plates of massive stacks to the table, he set them down, got out the forks and knives, the butter, and the syrup. Set them all down in a neat way on the table, and waited for his new meister to wake up.

When Sofie awoke, it was in an unfamiliar bed in an unfamiliar room; understandably, she spent a good few seconds panicking, before realization hit her and she sat up. This was the guest room in Dan's house, she reminded herself. No reason to panic, right? She glanced out the window, wincing when she saw the position of the sun; it was much later than she'd anticipated waking up. She sighed softly, running a hand through her hair, which she'd let down from the end-braids and the band; the scruffy, shorter part fell in her face, and she pushed it back so she could see better. She'd stripped down to her undershirt and leggings, to sleep; now she stood and pulled on the rest of her outfit, leaning to look into a mirror an fix her hair.
Regardless of her efforts, she still looked a little disheveled when she exited the room. She was quiet, unsure if he was awake or not, she didn't want to wake him... what was that smell? Blinking curiously, she stepped out of the hall and towards the kitchen, realizing belatedly that she was smelling breakfast. Dan must have made himself something- she needed to leave, she thought, so he could enjoy his meal in peace.
Then she saw the two stacks, and she paused, her brow furrowed.
She wouldn't have put it past Dan to eat two stacks of pancakes himself- she had the sneaking suspicion that he was quite an eater- but it seemed odd that he'd gone through so much trouble just for himself. Two plates, two sets of forks and knives... so what did that mean, then? Had he... had he made breakfast for her? Surely not. Why would he put forth all that effort? She'd have been just as happy with a box of pop-tarts. Spying him, she rubbed her forearm sheepishly. "Um... g-good morning..." she greeted, unsure of what else to say.

Standing there next to the two freshly cooked stacks of pancakes, Daniel grinned at her. "I must've taken more time than I thought, glad I could get everything set up in time." he thought to himself relieved.
He quickly returned her greeting, "Good morning, I made us blueberry pancakes, for our special day today!" Daniel gave her a wide happy grin, he was so happy to have finally found someone who he felt would work with him and give him a chance, and he felt that his soul would sync well with Sofie's, he just..had a good feeling about her.
He sat down at the table and took the first bite of his plateful. He was surprised that he had done so well on them, they actually tasted good! They even had the right texture for pancakes, the blueberries were in there too of course, he felt that's what made them special in his humble opinion.
Once he'd scarfed down his fill, he had at least two left on his plate, he knew what to do with them, and it wasn't throw them into the trash.
"Hey Sofie, you like cats? There's a stray that lives under the stairs outside, I give her any food that I don't polish off." He grinned, "She's kinda like a walking garbage disposal, plus I'd feel bad just throwing it away when she's out there hungry ya know? Ya wanna meet her? She's a bit shy around strangers, but if you feed her or pet her behind the ears she'll warm right up to you."
Daniel led the way out the front door and slowly down the front steps, he made little kissy noises and 'here kitty kitty's. Until he spotted a ginger cat peeking out from under the stairwell. "There ya are! Look what I brought you." He put the plate of pancakes down on the ground, a breakfast fit for a cat king.
The cat sniffed at the pancakes, meowed happily up at Daniel, before slowly stepping back a few paces in a frightened way, it had caught sight of the stranger he was with.
"Hey hey," Daniel held his hand out for the cat to come back out, "This is Sofie, she's another friend. She won't hurt ya."
"Mrreow?"
