In this heat, nobody wanted to do laps at the track, so by the time the sun began to go down and the hot Nevada city cooled off a little there was nobody present at the Shibusen track. Zia didn't mind. Wen it came to working out and training her body, she liked the more solitary pursuits. Sports and school was with a team, but exercise was something you did for yourself.
It was clear nobody was at the track because the day had been so hot. Zia was just fine with that too. She was a child of Africa, after all! The light-haired Egyptian girl was no stranger to hot temperatures and, if she was honest, they reminded her of Cairo. It was a nostalgic feeling, and if she closed her eyes, she could almost imagine she was back home, or on a dig in the Sahara with her father, or-
She shook herself, opening her eyes and increasing her pace. Don't think about it, Zia mentally admonished. It'll only make you homesick. But homesick for where? It wasn't as if they had lived in one place longer than a year, and if she was being 100% truthful, Cairo was really only a place her family returned to. It could have been anywhere. Her father was already itching to get back into the archeology circuit and coming out of retirement, and last time she spoke to him on the phone he had said her mother was accepting a job transfer to a hospital in England. A sharp pang of sadness echoed through Zia, and she slowed down her blistering running pace and eventually walked to a stop.
She had been at Shibusen about half a year now. At any moment, she kept expecting to get a call saying she had to leave. Pack up and move on. It was taking most of her strength to force herself to forget the sensation, but the nagging feeling that she would be leaving was overwhelming. She hadn't made any concrete friendships, just small superficial ones. Like always. She didn't even have a weapon partner, as hesitant as she was in case...well. Just in case. Zia didn't resent the traveling and she loved seeing different countries. Her passport had more stamps than a lot of 16-year-olds would ever hope to see in their life! But all that moving had taken a toll on her in other ways.
Zia tugged at her tank top, lost in thought. She didn't notice the other person who was walking on the track behind her.

The day had been long tiring and not to mention very hot but the sun had gone down now and Akuma felt that it was finely cool enough for him to try and get a run in. He wasn’t the fastest running in his class but that never bothered the meister. While there where some kids that could run laps around him in the long run it was Akuma who would be passing them. Since he had come to his city he hadn’t really had the need to run from anything or more like anyone but he didn’t want to get rusty.
He had made his way to the track and saw that there was someone else there already. Well this was a school after all he didn’t expect to be along out here. Before he even thought about starting his run he began his stretches. After getting warmed up he got onto the track and started his rum or it was more like a steady passed jog. There was no point in trying to do a full sprint right now he was just getting a nice work out in.
Akuma rounded the corner of the track and was able to finely get a good look at the other person on it. It was a girl like he hasn’t seen yet with her tan skin and white hair. This school was just full of interesting looking girls. Akuma jogged a little fast to catch up with her to get a better look seeing as all he could see at this moment was her back side. He slowed down to a walk as he got close to her cocking his head to the side. She looked a little lost in thought and had a worried look on her face.
”Hey you okay?”
He honestly didn’t know why he stopped to ask her if she was okay students at this school could take care of themselves just fine. He found that out the hard way when he got punched in the face by the geisha but this girl just looked so lost and getting a better look at her face she was really cute. Like the type of cute that you just want to but in your pocket and take home with you. The tattooed boy stood there for a moment and waited for her response.

A voice broke into her thoughts and startled Zia back to the present. It took her a moment to understand what was going on, but she rebounded quickly, waving away the strangers concern and laughing.
"Sorry! I just got lost in thought." She shrugged. "Didn't mean to worry you, um..."
Zia squinted up at him. She was sure she'd seen the guy in front of her before, walking around Death City. He wasn't the kind of person you could forget: at least six feet tall, tattooed, never wore a shirt - what was with the male students at Shibusen? Zia had seen at least three different guys with bare chests in the past week, not that she minded - the guy had a tendency to stick in the brain. She had never talked to him, though, so she had no idea
In any case, he seemed nice, since he had stopped to ask if she was ok. "I'm fine! I usually end my runs with scaring total strangers," she joked, shrugging her shoulders and grinning. She felt extra short next to the other student. She found herself standing up straighter just to get a little extra height. "You can go back to running now," she added apologetically. "Sorry I made you stop."
Zia, on the other hand, was finished. She began stretching her arms, then bent over to touch her toes. She'd been at the track for the better part of the evening and although she could probably run a little longer, she was feeling a bit tired. She was a fast runner but she needed to work on distance, so she had been pacing herself but was still a little out of breath.

Akuma gave a little laugh to her comment about scaring strangers. She seemed like an interesting girl but then again all the girls at the school seemed interesting and he wasn’t sure if he had seen her around before. Then again she was a lot shorter than him and she might have just slipped under his radar, but no matter she was here now and he was giving her him full attention. He cocked his head slightly as she began to stretch. Was she done running already? Well he couldn’t have this he just meet this girl and he wanted her to stick around a bit longer. At least long enough for him to get her name.
”Leaving so soon? I hope I didn’t scare you off I mean I know I look pretty intimidating.”
He gave her a sly grin and a wink at that but took a more casual stance as he looked down at her. He gave her a better look over now that he was closer to her but he wasn’t checking her out, for the most part. It was subtle look and he hoped that she hadn’t noticed it.
”Hey why not go for a jog with me? I mean that is if I haven’t scared you off yet. I’m new to this school and I think it would be nice to get to know some more people. So what do you say?”
Akuma was being all the charming now to this girl. It was a cheap way to get what he wanted but it always seemed to work and he was being sincere about meeting knew people. Hell he could always use some more friends and maybe if he was lucky this girl might be a weapon. He did need a partner but one step at a time boy, one step at a time.

"Nah," Zia said causally, throwing her arms over her head to stretch out her sides. "You're not that scary."
It was true - the blonde boy in front of her may have been at least half a foot taller than her, and he did have quite a lot of tattoos from what she could see, but there was nothing about him that screamed at her, "AVOID!" At least, no warning flags yet. Zia was fairly confident that most people who attended Shibusen were just merely strange, not dangerous. Not to other students, that is.
She dropped her arms at his next suggestion. "A jog?" She repeated, incredulous, her face wrinkling. "What's so fun about that? I'll tell you what - why don't you and me race?" Yeah, that was much more entertaining! Zia mentally patted herself on the back for coming up with that idea.
"Let's do one lap - a quarter mile. If you win, uh..." Zia realized she had no idea what kind of odds she was against, so just shrugged. "You name your own prize. But if I win..." At this, she tapped her chin in thought. What was something she needed or wanted? If she was racing with Arlie, it would have been no contest what sort of things they'd be betting - a dinner, ice cream, something food related. It was one of the things Zia really had bonded with her roommate over. But this blonde dude was a total stranger, so it was hard for her to think of something. What do I need...?
Something sparked in her mind. "If I win," she said, a grin splitting her face into her trademark devilish expression, "you have to help me with one task. Anything I choose." She wasn't ready to tell him what it was yet. Keep it vague. If she said it out loud, maybe he'd think she was childish - not exactly the cool image she'd been trying to work on. "what do you say?"
Zia hoped the tall stranger was up for a friendly competition. It would be awfully boring if he wasn't.

Akuma cocked his head to the side as a grin passed over his face. She wanted a little friendly and fun race? Well he couldn’t just say no to that even if he was a slow running and knew going into this that he would probably lose there was always just something fun about trying to win. He place a hand on his hip as he also tapped his finger on his chin thinking over what he wanted if he was to win by some miracle.
”Well let me be honesty here the odds of me winning are slim to none but yes I will take you up on this bet. Hummm now if I were to win by some chance what would I ask of you?”
He was eying the smaller girl up now thinking it over. She was cute but not his type so date was out of the question and anyway he was putting his efforts into wooing that bomb shell of a girl Lior. He thought for a moment and snapped his fingers.
”AH! I got it! If I win you have to help me find a weapon! I have been here for a little bit but I still haven’t found myself a weapon. That sounds like a good trade to me.”
Akuma gave a node of his head as he walked over to the starting line and got down into a sprinting pose and looked over at Zia.
”I am ready whenever you are.”
He gave her a charming smile but in his head he thought of something fun to do. This girl looked like the type that could take a joke and she never really said if the race was to be a fare one. So when the signal was given for them to run Akuma would pull a fast one and trip Zia. She looked like a fast girl and there was no harm in giving him a little head start. He had a feeling he would pay for it latter but for now he would go with it.

"A weapon, huh! Okay, sounds fair," Zia said. If he's looking for a weapon... She couldn't help but be filled with glee. It looked like she was going to win, even if she lost. And she liked those odds.
If the blonde kid won, she'd just volunteer herself to be his weapon. If Zia won, that was the favor she was going to ask of him anyways - help her find a meister. It was an amazing coincidence - or...
Well, one way or the other, Zia didn't see any downside.
She got into the starting position, even with the tall stranger. "On the count of three," she said, her grin wicked.
"One!"
She took off.
Zia, of course, had never planned on counting to three. Cheating? Her? Never. But a little...friendly confusion, that made everything interesting. He had a sort of devilish air about him. Zia didn't doubt he had a few tricks up his sleeves. He looked the sort.
Well, her little bit of trickery had stopped any immediate plans of his, obviously. And it wasn't as if she needed the head start to win. Zia had no doubt that the kid she was racing was strong - his muscles said that for him - but in a race, Zia was confident of her ability to win. She'd been running around dig sites and through sand dunes since she could walk, up hills and mountains. Her feet hit the packed dirt track rhythmically, her arms pumping as she held her head high, laughing the whole time. She usually slowed down after about a quarter mile - which is exactly why she made the race that exact distance. Might as well play to your strengths.
She was suddenly glad they were at the track. Zia could outrun most people she met, but if they were in the firing range or the dojo she was certain she'd have lost. Not like losing was too terrible in the long run - this kid needed a weapon, and she needed a meister. His problem was an easy one for her to solve. It was more for her pride - she could get competitive, although she didn't like to admit it.

The girl took off at the count of one and while Akuma wanted to just say hey about it a laugh came out instead. She has bested him in his plane to trip her at the start and he enjoyed the little trick she had but he wasn’t done yet. Oh no he knew she would win this race and that if he tried to run on the track he would never catch up to her at this point. So he waited for her to get about half way around the track just to the other side of him and that is when he made his move.
Akuma bolted across the field to the girl closing the gap between them a lot fast that he really should have. He could do a short sprint like this but he was going to regret it in about five minutes. Reaching his target of Zia he ran up to her scoping her up into his arms and in one fast movement placing her on his shoulders. His hand where places on her knees as he kept running to make sure she could keep her balance and didn’t fall off of the tall guy.
”Ha! Got Ya!”
He ran the rest of the way around the track with her on his shoulders but as they reach the finish line he picked her up again and places her back down on the ground on the other side of the line. He didn’t steal the goal from her he just wanted to get her back. Akuma grinned at the girl panting a little as he places one hand on his hip.
”All right you won but before you tell me what you want me to do I must first ask for your name. I just had you up on my shoulders for a half lap and I don’t even know what to call you. Mine is Akuma.”
He was taking in big breaths as he talked. That first sprint really took it out of him and he added the extra run in as well. He was not a runner, well he was but he wasn’t used to going that fast for that amount of time. Maybe that was something he could work on later but for now he was a man of his word and he would help this girl out with what every she needed help with.

Ha! She was winning! There's no way that big guy could catch up to her now-
She felt something pick her up, and for a moment her legs pedalled in midair at the shock of the sudden lift, but then the truth slowly registered in her brain.
"Whoa-"
Before she could protest, she had been thrown over the guy's shoulder, and he was off and running. Where'd he come from?! Zia thought as he threw her on his shoulders, hands on her knees. Zia grabbed onto his hair and struggled not to fall off, shrieking and then laughing as the two made their way to the finish line.
As her ride slowed to a stop, Zia pumped her fists in the air. "Woo! That was a rush!" She laughed as she was gently set down. She punched the air again when her feet were on solid ground, grin wide. "I won and I didn't even have to run half of it myself!"
She stretched side to side while the other student caught his breath, listening as he gave her his name.
"Nice to meet you! Call me Zia," she said in turn, but her expression turned thoughtful. "And what I want you to do..." She grinned, looking slightly sheepish. "Well, I've been here at Shibusen for a while and I still don't have a meister, so..." She dug the toes of her sneaker in the dirt, looking slightly embarrassed. "I was wondering if you'd help me find one." She looked up sharply. "Not that I need a lot of help! I'm very outgoing! But it's been a while, and..."
I don't know that many people, Zia finished silently. She could count on one hand how many friend she'd made - it usually didn't bother her, but Zia couldn't shake that feeling that she'd still be leaving. Don't set up roots. Don't get attached.
Well, it was about time she got attached.
"So, how about it?" She asked, tilting her head to the side. "Not too difficult a task, is it? If you don't want to, I can probably think of something else."
