It had taken a bit, but Lior had recently realized that she knew very little about Rhett. The two were partners. He was a Demon Screw and he was a bit on the odd side, he seemed vastly intelligent and suffered from asthma, and that was about all she really knew. Upon coming to this realization, the albino had thought that this was rather strange in and of itself. They were partners, shouldn’t they know more about each other? She came to the conclusion that because they were NOT students and had yet to do any real fighting as of yet that perhaps they weren’t as close as some of the other teams. She was sure they would get there in due time, but it still seemed so strange to her. They still had three more NOT missions to go before they would achieve One Star status. It still seemed like such a surreal idea that she and Rhett would soon be moving up the ranks and taking on real Kishin Eggs that would no doubt try to tear them limb from limb. That was another reason she thought it best that perhaps they get together, just to get to know each other better and relax rather than fretting over raccoons or lost little boys. After all, the better they knew each other, the better they would work together or at least that was Lior’s reasoning behind the whole thing. With all these thoughts having been buzzing around and around in her mind for at least a week if not longer, Lior had finally gotten up the courage to invite Rhett over to her house to spend some time together outside of school and possibly haunted houses. It would do them good to be able to talk someplace where they weren’t expected to either pay attention to what was being written on a chalkboard or be wary of ghosts. What Lior hadn’t remembered at the time, though, was that she had no clue what she was doing. The albino had never invited a friend over, never had a visitor that wasn’t either a family member or a close friend of the family, and even then they were usually present to see her parents. She’d never had a friend over, ever, and when she realized this she had started to panic the morning of. Thankfully Abigail was there to gently knock some sense into her. Lior had been staring worriedly at the clock for some time when she felt a light but firm tap atop her head. Jolting out of her imaginary world of danger, she turned her gaze on her old nanny and pouted, but the older woman wasn’t having it, “Oh no, feygele, none of the big eyes and trembling lower lip, I won’t have it!”The albino only hunched her shoulders, “I’m sorry, Abigail, I don’t mean to pout but I’m just so nervous.”The older woman heaved a sigh and rolled her eyes. Lior turned from her in favor of pacing about the room. Rhett would be there soon, or at least she hoped so. She knew she’d given him her address and that he was certainly smart enough to find her house, even if it was a bit more out of the way. She was still technically in the suburbs, but Lior’s home away from home was in the far richer area of Death City. Even then, the house could fit easily four times within her home back in Chicago but that was beside the point. Her stomach was starting to churn and the albino pursed her lips together to form a thin line. Another, harder tap to the top of her head brought her out of her anxious state of mind and again she pouted at Abigail who only chuckled and shook her head, “You worry far too much for one so young. You two are partners, aren’t you? Everything will be fine.”Partners. Somehow that did make Lior feel better. Abigail was right, she was worrying too much. This was Rhett she was talking about. They’d maneuvered their way around panty bandits and rescued a scared boy; or rather Rhett had rescued a scared boy while she’d stood crying like a child in the middle of a dusty and decrepit house. She still didn’t know how he’d managed that, but she was sure it had something to do with him being smarter than her and Alan both. Hopefully she’d be able to somehow make it up to him one day by actually being a helpful Meister instead of being scared or nervous or generally useless. Growing tired of pacing, she finally settled for seating herself on the couch and waiting patiently as she could, remaining silent as Abigail and the other three maids scurried about readying everything.

Rhett found Lior’s invitation to her house a bit odd but wasn’t too concerned over it. They could easily meet anywhere in the school but houses did have a more formal atmosphere about them. She wanted to hang out so they could grow closer as partners and that seemed rather understandable. They did have to be ready for when they reached one star and became superheroes after all. Having been told where to go Rhett made sure things would work out for him to do so. This would be a good idea for multiple reasons as far as he could see. The whole idea still seemed odd to him but that was probably because going to a girl’s house didn’t usually happen until much later in the games he was used to playing, though using dating Sims for a basis wasn’t the best sort of reference.
Her concerns about them as a one star team were not unfounded and Rhett had planned on preparing his own way. Noticing he had time after school and when he was supposed to meet Lior he headed to the library after school to kill time. Skimming through books that might prove useful in the future he looked for anything concerning missions and kishin eggs. Sadly the selection was not as wide as he would have liked with his NOT class status but that just gave him something to look forward to later on. After going through a few he had enough time to get to Lior’s house in time and headed out.
Walking more slowly than usual when he was close to the address his eyes skimmed over each one for the correct place. Watching the numbers draw closer was an interesting experience in itself considering he wasn’t sure what to expect from where Lior lived. She had a house in the first place so that was sort of interesting. He knew teams tended to get apartments or houses off school grounds on occasion but those cost more money than he was willing to spend. The dorms were just fine and the allowance he received while living there was a great bonus. Either way he was looking for some sort of house that his meister lived in but he had essentially nothing to make assumptions off of. It should be showing up soon if he just kept following the numbers so it would be close.
Reaching the given number Rhett looked up to see a giant house. He checked again and it was the correct number she had given him. Of any possible expectations he had this trumped any of those. The place was huge and put where he lived back in Belarus to shame. The whole thing was just so large and fancy he was somewhat intimidated. Slowly walking up he approached the door and gave an exhale before looking at it. He had the right number so hopefully this was the right house, knocking on some stranger’s door would end horribly for everyone involved. Giving in he lifted a hand and knocked part of cruel angel thesis on the door. Stopping shortly after he waited for some sort of response. To make sure he was at the correct place he gave a sort of greeting in case someone was listening.
”Um…Lior?”

It hadn't occurred to Lior that her residence would be intimidating to anyone, much less her partner. She knew that she was certainly well off; however to her even the giant house she currently inhabited was small compared to her home in Chicago. Her end of the street was lined with enormous two story houses. Lior’s was no different, being over all imposing as it sprawled over the property with large windows and a rather heavy set of wooden doors. Even being a little ways from the entry to her house, Lior still heard Rhett knocking if only because she’d been listening for it. She hesitated though. Maybe one of the maids would get it? Abigail passed by behind her and smacked the back of her head,
“Don’t just sit there like a lump, go greet your guest!”
“Ah, I’m sorry!”
The albino was already anxious and had no clue what she was doing. Hurriedly getting to her feet, she made her way through a small hall before spying the font doors. Oh boy, this was it. How exactly did you greet someone again? She was so nervous she nearly tripped over her own feet, catching herself against the far wall of the foyer and leaning against it for a moment. Hearing her Weapons voice, she couldn’t quite make out what he said, but at least Lior knew for sure it was Rhett at the door. Taking a deep breath, she shook her head and clapped her hands to her cheeks. She could do this! It was Rhett, not a snake! Taking a deep breath, Lior strode forward and firmly grasped the door handle before pulling it back.
Somehow just seeing him was a bit of a comfort. She could to this, it was only her Weapon. They’d gotten past two NOT missions and would no doubt clean house in their remaining three. With a timid smile upon her face, Lior bowed her head slightly,
“Good afternoon, Rhett. Please come in!”
That was what she was supposed to do, right? Invite him in? Lior generally wasn’t the one who answered the door, it was usually always Abigail. The older woman had only encouraged to make her appear more social, or at least that’s what Lior got from it. Opening the door more and stepping back to let her Weapon enter, she glanced behind her and nearly jumped. The maids and Abigail were all lined up to welcome Rhett as well. Lior pursed her lips and looked the picture of anxiousness. She hated when they did that. How did they move about so silently anyway? And hadn’t Abigail been further away towards the other side of the house? Regardless, they all bowed their heads and smiled, speaking in unison ‘welcome’ as soon as Rhett walked in.
If Lior’s house was intimidating from the outside, it certainly would be inside as well. All of the floors were made of dark and polished wood. The walls were a bit lighter, appearing to be made of paneling and each with near identical but still unique gold flourishes of pattern engrained into the wood. In the foyer hung a chandelier from the high ceiling, casting glittering light down upon them. It wasn’t lit, not during the day, but the windows that surrounded it higher up cast glinting sunlight down to reflect off the walls and floor. Lior’s Weapon had wandered into the territory of the disgustingly rich.

At the moment Rhett was worried he may have the wrong house and that was sinking into him. Having to explain himself would be weird for all involved parties and he still wouldn’t be where he was supposed to. It would just be horrible if he ended up not finding the place and leaving Lior waiting. At the sound of movement, footsteps to be precise, Rhett prepared for the inevitable encounter. As they drew closer Rhett started to get a little nervous until the door was opened and revealed that he had indeed found the right residence. Giving his own smile in return he gave a bit of a nod/bow in response to her bow.
”Thanks”
As Lior moved aside Rhett did as was prompted and moved inside the giant house. His eyes couldn’t help but wander around the house now that he was inside. Impressed was one way to describe his reaction. Everything was much fancier than his home in Belarus by leaps and bounds. He hadn’t seen anything like this sort of house outside of the anime he watched. His brain naturally went to work making comparisons. If this was a show or game than Lior was apparently one of the richer characters unless otherwise disproven.
Stopping at the sight of the maids Rhett took a moment to process this. Actual maids, with the uniforms and everything. It was a bit overwhelming for the poor Belarusian as he took in all the eccentricity around him. At their unison greeting Rhett had to reconfirm that his life wasn’t actually an anime. He was just waiting for the old butler to show up and offer plot important advice. Composing himself to not looked utterly overwhelmed by the maids he gave a somewhat nervous smile at their greeting with his eyes slightly bigger than normal.
”Um….hi.”
With the maids and chandelier and everything Rhett tried to not act like his life had suddenly become a visual novel. Hopefully if it had it would be a good one and not a murder mystery if he was lucky. Though with maids you could never tell if it was a horror or an eroge until it was too late, he must just be vigilant then. Peeling his eyes away from the elaborate everything he turned to face his meister and get some relief. At least she was the same as usual, if she was suddenly in Victorian clothing or a naked apron he would need to reevaluate things.
”So what’s the plan Lior?”
She was the one who invited him so he assumed she had some idea about what to do next. Plus anything to take him mind off of the richness just pulsating around him.

Lior couldn’t tell if Rhett was impressed or dumbfounded by the Nevada Menke residence, but she did giggle a bit as he looked around. The foyer was nothing compared to the rest of the house. She wondered how he’d react to the other rooms as she shut the door and moved slightly past him, sighing a bit at the maids. Was that really necessary? Granted if this were her house in Chicago there would be at least twenty lined up in even rows from tallest to shortest standing on either side of the doors, and that wasn’t even counting the butlers and cooks and other house staff. Still, she could tell their antics were making her and Rhett both nervous. Thankfully the three youngest dispersed, eyeing the two while whispering back and forth to each other about who knows what. Abigail gave a gentler smile to Rhett before looking to Lior,
“I’ll make you two some tea.”
As she exited the foyer, she wandered past Lior and leaned in close to whisper to her,
“Er zayn kheynevdik.” ((He’s cute.))
Lior didn’t see what the point of that was, but it brought a blush to her face regardless. On the bright side, it seemed the initial shock of entering her home had won off and Rhett was now looking at her rather than the walls and ceiling. The plan? Lior had absolutely no idea. The albino supposed that she really should have thought of some course of action before her Weapon had arrived, but of course she’d been so nervous it had totally slipped her mind. She hadn’t planned anything!
Okay, the key thing for her was not to panic. Lior had spent most of her lie indoors after all, so she had a multitude of hobbies and therefor nearly every room in the house had something to do contained within. Her violin and piano were upstairs; there was an easel with a half-finished canvas sitting by the window in the living room as a result of her deciding to paint the backyard. Abigail was already getting tea, which was just as well since Lior could neither boil water not would she know what a kettle even looked like. If she tried to turn the stove on she’d likely only succeed in burning the house down.
Electronics were minimal in Lior’s house. There was a television and of course she had her own laptop but she rarely used either. Her younger brother had given her his Xbox to take along with her. It was a sweet gesture but Lior didn’t really play video games. With too many options swirling around in her head, the albino drew her thoughts in and went back to the whole reason why Rhett was even here. She’d invited him over so they could get to know each other better, so why not start there? Shifting her weight to one foot and crossing her arms behind her back, Lior gave a timid smile and admitted the truth,
“This may sound silly but I’m afraid I don’t have one. I’ve never had a friend over before so I spent my time worrying.”
There was a plan now in her head, though. She only hoped it worked. Standing up a bit straighter, Lior also smiled just a tad brighter,
“But you are my guest, so why don’t I let you choose? What do you like to do, Rhett?”
It was hitting two birds with one stone, really. In asking this they may figure out something to do and Lior would learn a bit more about her partner.

The house was still utterly massive but Rhett did find it amusing to look around and pick out little details. Having such an elaborate place was certainly a lot to take in but that just made it more fun and was a good exercise for his memory. He had done the same at arriving at the dorms but even how fancy they were paled in comparison to Lior’s residence. One of the maids was apparently going to get them tea so things seemed straight out of a visual novel. Did maids even get anything besides tea? It was a pressing question that he would need to research with his games later.
Overall it was still intimidating to see everything and how much more elaborate it was to what he was used to. Even his new house in Belarus was nothing compared to this or the dorms for that matter. Calming himself he would ignore the fanciness of everything and focus on what he came here for in the first place, hanging out with his meister. The two seemed more and more different now but there had to be something they shared that could help them get better as a team.
It was Lior’s place so he wasn’t sure exactly what was hidden within these walls but if his intuition was correct there were probably secret passages and hidden rooms all over. Maybe if he pulled out a mat somewhere he would find the entrance to some secret underground training area. Alright maybe not that much, none of the maids had the cane, hat, and clogs for that. Either way he was looking forward to whatever it was that they would be doing to grow as partners. Getting to one star class and being useful was something Rhett was impatiently awaiting.
Oh so she didn’t have a plan? Well they would certainly think of something but finding out what became a tad more difficult. He would usually just watch something but that wasn’t the most conducive method of fostering a greater bond. He wasn’t that familiar with friends coming over either so he was in a bit of a slump. So she was going to let him decide what they did? That was a nice gesture but not that helpful when he didn’t know what was available to them. When he visited friends back home they usually ended up playing some sort of game so that was a start.
”Well usually when I’ve been at people’s houses we end up playing some sort of game. So if that helps any we could do something like that.”
Still unsure but he hoped he helped. If they did end up playing some game he was interested in seeing what games Lior had. He would withhold judgment on them until he say them himself. If she was good at them they could have some fun with what she had.

Games? That sounded like a good idea. Tilting her head upwards, Lior pondered just was sort of games would be suitable. The first thing that came to mind was the Xbox. It was upstairs and Lior had never actually touched it so she hadn’t the slightest clue how to even turn it on. She’d looked through the games her little brother had sent along with it once but most were either shooters or fighting games, things that Lior was totally unfamiliar with. More childish games came to mind as well although she immediately nixed hide and seek. Yes, make the asthmatic run and hide, that sounded like a fantastic idea. The albino scrunched up her face a bit. She supposed they could also play twenty questions, that would at least seem to better serve the purpose of their get together.
Returning her gaze to Rhett, Lior let him know her thoughts,
“I think playing games is a great idea. There is an Xbox upstairs, although to be quite honest I’ve never touched it so that may prove to be an adventure in and of itself. There’s also the simpler option to play something like twenty questions. That would certainly go along with learning more about each other.”
Lior would wait for Rhett’s input on these propositions for course. It was true that it was her house and she could technically dictate decisions, but she would feel strange doing so. The albino was hardly forceful, and taking charge was definitely something she wasn’t used to. That thought in mind, she’d definitely need to find a way to work on that in the future. It was, after all, a Meister’s job to take charge for the most part during battle. She knew she could and probably would rely on Rhett considering for one he was her Weapon and for another thing she could foresee herself wanting his advice in possible strategy, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that she couldn’t just hide behind him or some inanimate object when fighting a Kishin Egg. She’d be standing against it with Rhett in hand left mostly to her own devices, and that thought still scared her.
Pulling her thoughts away from the morbid and possibly problematic, another thought struck Lior suddenly. Malachi. She hadn’t really seen or heard Rhett express any disdain for small furry creatures, but if they wound up upstairs at some point she thought it best to at least inquire. Bring a hand to the side of her face and tilting her head a bit, Lior questioned him,
“Also, are you allergic to chinchillas or possess any discontent with them? If we do go upstairs you’ll run into one, it’s why I ask.”

Rhett was fairly certain that playing some games was a good idea. It was usually the natural course of things anyway and normally a safe choice. However Lior wasn’t exactly like what he was used to. Even when he did move into the private school his little group of friends didn’t exactly consist of people with mansions and maids. Hopefully things would work out well enough either way and the two could bond and have some fun at the same time. After giving his input he waited for Lior to answer and give her opinion. Games sounded good to her as well so it looked like everything would go smoothly.
”We could play a game on easy while asking the questions. That would help with the learning more about each other and give us something to do when the questions were over.”
The reveal that Lior had an Xbox but hadn’t played it did catch Rhett off guard a bit. It wasn’t so much the unused console in general but Lior probably didn’t play much of anything based on her response. Considering how much time he spent playing games it was an odd thought that someone didn’t really spend any, he sort of expected most people to at least play a bit.
Lior’s next question seemed a tad out of place but it made sense after a moment. Was he allergic to chinchillas? He never really spent time with one so he didn’t know. As far as he did know he wasn’t really allergic to anything, he wasn’t unfortunate enough to have asthma and allergies. Of course he could be and just not know it but he figured that option was rather unlikely. Looking at Lior he shrugged his shoulders with a somewhat confused expression.
”I’ve never really been around one before so I don’t know. I shouldn’t be allergic though so guess I’ll just have to meet the chinchilla to find out.”
His face turned up into a smile as he spoke the last of his words. Back home he wasn’t really around many animals in general considering the cost that went with owning one. He had nothing against them but pets in general were unfamiliar to him. Well mostly unfamiliar aside from the occasional dog he would play with at a friend’s house. If he didn’t have a problem with them how bad could a little chinchilla be?

Rhett’s idea hadn’t even crossed Lior’s mind, but then the albino could hardly be called a multitasker. Clasping her hands in front of her chest, she smiled sweetly and nodded,
“That sounds like a lovely idea! Two birds with one stone, as they say.”
Granted she wasn’t completely sure her attention span could cope or not, plus there was the whole part of her never having touched the gaming console on the second floor but she was sure Rhett would show her the ropes. Besides, if it was set on easy, how hard could it possibly be? Even better was that the 360 would finally be getting some use rather than sitting around gathering dust, not to mention it would force Lior to actually looked through the games her brother had sent her along with it rather than just stacking them all in a corner and forgetting they existed.
It seemed Rhett wasn’t entirely sure on the whole allergy thing, but Lior had never heard of anyone being allergic to a chinchilla so she doubted it would be too big of a deal. Smiling again, she placed her hands on her hips,
“It seems that way. Well then, shall we go upstairs?”
The albino would wait for Rhett’s affirmative before waving for him to follow her and meandering slightly off down the hall. The wood of the stairs was as dark as it was on the walls. It would be easy to miss for someone who didn’t live in the house or visit regularly. It had taken even Lior around a week or repeatedly walking past it and occasionally looking for it to get the hand of where it was. She ascended the spiral steps leading up to the second floor rather slowly, mainly to be sure Rhett wouldn’t keel over on the way up. He’d had some difficulty with stairs during their first NOT mission, but then again they’d been running so perhaps it was just a case of overexertion. As the walls spiraled up around them, the material banister wove together like vines. Murals that looked like they belonged in the pages of an old fairytale were painstakingly painted long the walls as the stairs moved up, the glittering gold of a sun abruptly halting as the top step was bypassed.
Lior headed right from the top of the stairs. The hall may have been brighter as one side was lined with gothc arched windows that reached from the floor to the ceiling. Each and every one, however, was covered up by a heavy curtain, sunlight only sneaking in by small slivers. Still, the expanse was still well lit. Lamps hung near to the ceiling in the form of blooming flowers, their petals made of red and gold stained glass. Lior continued along past four doors before pausing. The albino was apprehensive if only for a moment, grasping the doorknob in one hand and bracing the other against the heavy wood and looking very focused. Slowly, she opened the door just a crack. Whiskers appeared and Lior sighed, shaking her head,
“I thought you might have escaped. Go on then, get back. We have company.”
A little nudge from her foot and the whiskers disappeared. Lior hurried inside , ushering Rhett in after her and then shutting the door. At their feet was a grey and furry creature, tail twitching and head cocked to one side. Lior bent and scooped him up in her arms, a timid smile on her face,
“This is Malachi. Don’t worry, he doesn’t bite. He likes people.”
The chinchilla squirmed a bit before settling with his head pressed up beneath Lior’s chin, staring at Rhett with large black eyes. The albino set him down after a moment, wandering further into the room. Once again, there were several windows along one side of the rooms, all covered up by heavy curtains. A large and rather overstuffed couch carved a semicircle out of the middle of the room set to face a 70-inch plasma wide screen television. In the corner was a violin set up on its stand next to another stand holding paper with several rows of musical notes scribbled upon it. Another half-finished canvas sat propped up on an easel beside one of the windows. Lior made her way over to the 360 that sat beneath the television, checking to be sure it was actually plugged in before kneeling beside the stack of games and looking to Rhett,
“I have a few games, but I’m not quite sure which ones are any good as I’ve never really looked through them. I leave the selection up to you.”
‘Few’ was a bit of an understatement, really. In actually there were no less than fifty stacked neatly against the wall, but to be fair most were shooters. Every Call of Duty, Halo, Dead Space, and Gears of War made was more than likely present, in addition to Assassin’s Creed, Fable, and Left 4 Dead.

It was reassuring that Lior appeared to approve of his suggestion. It would work well for having fun as well as helping them learn more about each other. The latter being the main focus of this whole meeting but the first being equally important. Rhett was glad she liked his suggestion as it gave them something to fall back on if he wasn’t that interesting for the questions part of the activity. Hopefully that wouldn’t be the case though and everything would work out and help them be better prepared for the looming one star missions. In Rhett’s opinion they would need all the advantages they could for those.
At the question [posed by his meister Rhett nodded his head in confirmation. Stairs were never on his good side but he could manage them if he took his own pace. He would have given a vocal response but if they would be scaling stairs, in this house especially, he would need all the breath that he had. As Lior began the journey Rhett followed behind her at a pace where he wouldn’t get lost but at the same time wouldn’t end up wheezing every 3 steps and going through his inhaler in a minute.
Keeping pace he looked around and soaked up as much of the house as he could. All the sights were new to him and generally overwhelming. Even the fancy dorms that Shibusen offered students were nowhere near as elaborate as this and even more shocking to him. As they walked he committed all he saw to memory so if nothing else he would know the basic floor plan if he ever needed to walk around the house by himself for some reason. Though he was sure if he got lost he could just make a sound and be rescued by a platoon of maids, maybe getting lost wouldn’t be that bad of a thing.
Reaching a door he waited as his meister checked the room and caused something that must have been the chinchilla scamper away. Being ushered inside Rhett made haste to do as much and get inside the room quickly. Inside was no less impressive than outside and Rhett had to exert a conscious effort to not run over and press himself against the biggest T.V he had ever seen inside a house. Instead he crouched down as Lior went over to it and stared at the chinchilla that she had set down. Reaching out he scratched it on the head a few times before grinning and walking over to his meister.
She was leaving the choice of game up to him? Well he didn’t see any that he was most familiar with but that was probably for the best. Looking over her selection he tried to find something that would be easy enough for them to play while talking and Lior being new to it. Not having many problems with shooters himself he picked out Halo 3 from the stack and held it up.
”This is a pretty simple game, I’m sure we can manage this while asking questions.”
If anything they could hide somewhere and he could cover for Lior in the worst case scenario. Plus it shouldn’t be too hard to get used to the controls for her at the very least. Overall he found it pretty balanced and hoped Lior found it the same.

Halo 3. Lior tilted her head if only to regard the cover a bit better. She remembered seeing Tom play it on occasion as she passed through the game room back at their home in Chicago but had never really played it herself. Still, it looked like fun and Rhett said it was simple which would help a bit. The simpler it would be to play; the easier it would be for them to handle a game while also asking questions of each other. Either way, Lior was learning several new things today it seemed and so she smiled,
“Alright then, I’ll get it set up for us.”
Lior may not have been familiar with the games themselves, but she at least knew how to get the console on and set them up. She wasn’t completely inept at technology after all, just mastery of the ordinary but then that didn’t really apply in this case. Standing once again, the albino wandered to the couch and plucked the master remote from its resting place. Turning, she pressed the power button and watched the screen flicker to life. Ah, so it’d been left on Animal Planet! She couldn’t remember what she’d been watching the last time she’d turned the television on. Switching the input to the second video setting, she turned the volume down just a bit before setting the remote aside.
With that done, she wandered back to pick up the came and took it from the case. Stooping down a bit, she tapped the button on the 360 to get it to open up so she could put the disk in. Once that was done she made sure the wireless controllers had their batteries and handed one to Rhett with a smile,
“I’ll warn you now; I’ll probably be terrible at this. I apologize in advance if I get us killed.”
Returning to the couch, Lior fell back into the cushions and managed to get them to the main menu of the game at least. After that, she paused,
“So, um, how exactly do we start this?”
Malachi had toddled after Lior after she’d settled on the sofa. Resting his paws on her feet, he gazed up at her and made a chirring noise. Noticing the chinchilla, Lior left her controller in her lap and scooted forward a bit to pick him up, setting him down beside her. Contented, the fur ball curled up beside her and continued to softly chirr at the two.

It was always difficult to decide on a game when you didn’t know much about the person. That was essentially the point of them playing the game in the first place though, hearing that Lior wasn’t someone who played a lot of games only made the choice more difficult. Rhett wouldn’t have taken Lior for a fan of shooting games but she did have quite a few of them regardless. At least they were generally pretty easy for him to play and generally not terribly difficult to get the hang of. Halo was especially a good pick considering the shields and powers they could use to make things easier.
Well she smiled and didn’t seem to be opposed to the idea so that was a good start. Lior went to set up the game so Rhett took the time to look around and marvel at the room a bit more. Everything was so much more expensive looking compared to what he was used to. Even the private school he attended back in Belarus wasn’t as elaborate as this house. It was somewhat unsettling to him but he could deal with being in a fancy house for a while. Sitting down on the couch in view of the TV he waited for Lior to finish.
Lior finished the setup and wandered over to the couch with controllers. Rhett took the controller handed to him and quickly positioned his hands correctly on it. Testing how it compared to his usual controllers he figured out how to adjust his playing style accordingly. Finished adjusting himself he returned a smile at Lior to brush off her concerns.
”Don’t worry, it really isn’t too hard. Plus I’ll be there to help you.”
That seemed like a partnery thing to say. Rhett would have to keep the fact that he was playing with Lior in mind and not expect her to play exceptionally well. She did manage to get into the main menu so she might not be intolerably bad at this.
”Let’s try the story mode first so you can get a feel for everything.”
Using his controller Rhett got them into the story mode and let the game start. Jumping into multiplayer might be too much for Lior and their options were somewhat limited in that.

Lior gazed down at the controller in her hands, turning it this way and that a few times just to look it over before finally settling. She believed Rhett when he said it wasn’t too hard of a game to play, but then in the back of her mind she reminded herself this was coming from someone who she thought to be far more intelligent than herself. With that little bit of nervousness rattling around in her head, Lior nodded as he suggested story mode as a way to start out and let him take over control of setting things up. Nerves be damned, she was going to at least try her best.
As the game began, the albino vaguely remembered seeing the graphics and mechanisms somewhere before. She realized they probably looked familiar from commercials and also from watching Tom play as well. She did that on occasion when all else had bored her. It was rather entertaining to see a fourteen year old get so furious over fictional battlefields from time to time. Even vague familiarity made her feel less anxious though, her shoulders dropping just a bit as she went through pressing buttons and figuring out what ability or movement was activated by which selection. The camera took her a few moments, but once Lior had that down she was good to go.
Moving the character around a bit slowly if only to be sure to let Rhett lead, Lior tried to come up with any questions. After all, they were playing on easy for that exact reason. The only difficulty for her was that she really had no idea where to start or what was off limits in asking. Pursing her lips and keeping her eyes glued to the screen for a few minutes and tried to come up with at least a few simple ones. Easy questions she found tending to more often than not lead smoothly into more complex ones that tended to reveal more about a person. Blinking, she mentally sighed. She was starting to think like her mother, but then perhaps that wasn’t such a bad thing. Who better to emulate when talking to someone other than a lawyer?
There didn’t seem to be any terrible monsters yet, so while Lior flipped through which guns she had for the umpteenth time just to make sure she knew what was where, the albino glanced over at her partner briefly before planting her eyes on the screen again,
“So, where are you from?”
It seemed like something simple enough to start with. Plus Lior doubted she would get a complicated answer so it wouldn’t require Rhett to break focus too much as well. Beginning to hear some rather strange noises from the game, though, she did pause and pan the camera around, but kept following Rhett after not spotting anything.

With the game starting up Rhett gave that some of his attention but not enough to distract him from Lior. Being a game he had played through a few times only helped with that and mainly made it a background element. If his life had actually become a visual novel the game itself would be playing in the background where you couldn’t even interact with it. That aside it seemed that Lior wasn’t too inept to get the hang of things and was doing alright as far as he could tell. Relieved he continued on with the beginning of the game.
Having played through this opening part multiple times Rhett was amused by the timing of Lior’s question. It was during a downtime section but not for long. The answer was simple enough but it took him a moment as enemies began to head toward them soon after it was said. Making sure the controller was how he imagined he took a few shots and killed a pair of approaching enemies before the game became a background again. Keeping his eyes on the screen he responded to his meister.
”I’m from Belarus, the capital Minsk to be exact.”
Shooting the oncoming enemies Rhett made sure nothing got too close to him but not stopping all of them. It wouldn’t be any fun if Lior didn’t get to do anything so he wasn’t concerned with killing everything and allowed her to take care of any others. Not sure if she was going to ask him another question soon or not he decided to return to her for the sake of convenience.
”So where are you from?”
That should be an easy question and not to distracting for her.

Lior minded the pause; however her attention was soon drawn elsewhere. Ah, so that was it. If enemies were appearing then it was understandable. She jumped at a bit at the appearance, taken only slightly by surprise but she did her best to make sure and actually shoot them as was only proper. The way she wound up panning the camera at first had her shots going wonky, but she managed to hit one dead on without even meaning to. She didn’t expect the sudden rush of satisfaction it gave her, after all it was just a game, but the albino still couldn’t help the little smile that appeared on her face.
She had been expected somewhere far, but Belarus honestly had never cross Lior’s mind fi she would have had to guess where Rhett was from. She blinked, eyes glued to the screen before she managed to comment,
“And I thought I was a long way from home. Why you’ve come from across the world!”
It astounded her. Lior had thought that being across the country from her family was far, but Rhett certainly had her beat. She wondered if he ever got homesick like she did or what his family was even like. She supposed she could ask after answering the same question she had asked only moments before. However first there were more odd looking aliens attempting to shoot their heads off their shoulders. Lior noted that she was quicker this time and was thankful she finally seemed to have the hang over the camera without aiming at the ceiling or the floor from turning it too hard. She really only noticed that she managed to kill the oncoming enemies, not that she’d also managed to score headshots on every one of them. As long as they were dead she wasn’t too concerned. With another apparent lull, she answered her Weapon,
“I come from Chicago up in Illinois.”
Lior paused only briefly to turn a few more questions over in her head. Eventually the previous one she’d thought about originally came to mind. Listening carefully and panning the camera first to be sure no oncoming gunfire would interrupt her at least, she then spoke,
“What is your family like?”
