Appearance:
Kaine is a tall, fairly handsome man with a lean but muscular frame and blue eyes. Further supporting, thick and messy blond hair in which he lets several strands of hair cover his eyes, making it difficult to distinguish his eye colour at first glance. People usually comment on Kaine’s eyes, describing that looking into them is similar to sitting at a pier while watching the roaring depths of the ocean or observing the complete stillness from the calmest of lakes. This quality makes Kaine quite a difficult person to read while making it unnaturally easy to relax around him.
In terms of clothing, Kaine’s style is rather unorthodox as it consists of white skinny pants with thick black pinstripes and a tan leather tunic that changes into black leather halfway down his leg. In terms of footwear, he comfortably wears beige boots in which his pants are tucked into, reaching up to his calves. Being vaguely similar to cowboy boots whilst having their own unique flair, Kaine's boots have four sets of black belts complete with buckles to ensure maximum comfort while travelling. Sporting an unusual skirt, Kaine wears an extremely loose vest top that is usually covered with a one-sleeved black jacket shirt, revealing his exposed left arm in which is wears a silver bangle. To complete his attire, a lazily wrapped white scarf is flung around his neck in a loose fashion while carrying a chunky knit red bobble beanie for those cold nights. During his travels, Kaine tends to wear tattered cloaks over his clothes, which are typically dirty and in poor repair.

Fighting Style:
Though lazy and a pacifist by nature, Kaine utilises erratic movements to either keep his opponent guessing or throw them off completely. This can vary from swaying side to side like a flower in the wind, changing fighting stance or even wearing a vacant grin and stare on his face as he oddly makes his way towards the challenger.
Though he seems like someone wouldn't fight, Kaine is actually well versed in the martial art of Aikido, a fighting style which allows the user to defend themselves while inflicting minimal injury to their attacker through blending the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. Thus requiring very little physical strength as all Kaine does is lead the attacker's momentum while incorporating various throws and joint locks.
However, when Kaine does get serious, utilising his grandfather's style of fighting through the use of various elbows and kicks in order to deliver a number of aforementioned moves at a rapid pace within a short amount of time. This does depend on whether his opponent is locked in place by Kaine’s movements or is generally unskilled enough to counter or dodge from his strikes. One thing to note is that Kaine always takes a sideways stance when fighting, allowing him to defend or attack from multiple angles.
Personality:
Kaine is usually interpreted as strong silent type of man, unnaturally calm in any aspect, no matter what the danger or circumstance (meaning it takes A LOT to actually surprise this fellow). Most of the time, Kaine is a slacker by, maintaining a carefree, laid-back view on everything around him. However if the moment needs it, his attitude can change from calm to focused in seconds, utterly destroying an enemy without a second thought if its to protect people close to him. However, his calm nature stretches to the point where he’d even let his opponent finish their monologues or converse with their allies while he stands around waiting.
What most people tend to gather is that he is a compassionate person, helping anyone in whatever way he possibly can. Also he believes in avoiding serious conflict unless absolutely necessary, so he does not become angry or threaten other people. If someone is attempting to goad him into conflict, usually turning the other cheek and continue with whatever he was doing.
Simply put, Kaine wishes to just enjoy the small things in life while they exist, adopting this “go with the flow” mentality, which allows him to being happy and have a good time whenever possible. This manifests in a mischievous yet playful side, constantly finding a way to annoy his comrades with jokes and pranks.
One of the things that tend to annoy people is Kaine’s ability to only try and see the upside of situations, usually appearing clueless and slow
on the uptake of what exactly is happening around him. He is by no means an unintelligent person but his carefree lifestyle give people the
opposite impression.

Inside the Soul
Abilities:
- Soul Perception -
Like most Meisters from Shibusen, Kaine possesses the ability to sense the souls of others around him. Combined with Kaine's sensitivity to sound, the Meister can listen to a person’s soul wavelength much like it was a piece of music, allowing him listen to unprotected souls that are within 20ft.
For example; a normal human soul barely generates a sound, signifying their simplicity and lack of affinity to either side. However, beings who possess unnatural souls (e.g. un-soul protected witches, etc) generate a noticeable amount of unusual noises, being likened to a stringed instrument being poorly played or merely out of tune, symbolising how these individuals comfortably go against the natural flow of the world. However, Kaine has yet to have met or encountered a witch.

Quick Reflexes.
Swift.
Weaknesses:
- Low Physical Strength -
Though a skilled martial artist, Kaine isn’t a practitioner of some crazy fighting style. The One Inch Death Punch or breaking walls with just a glare is not part of Kaine’s plethora of talents. Frankly to compliment his carefree attitude and ideology of ‘going with the flow’, choosing to practice a style of fighting to redirect his opponent’s energy rather than combating it with his own. (Doesn’t mean he can’t break your face.)

- Psychologically Weak -
- Low Endurance -
When you focus all your training on not getting hit and speed you tend to forget what it actually feels like to receive a hit from someone twice your size. Whilst Kaine avoids for an outcome like this to happen, no-one defence is perfect and Kaine is extremely aware of this.

Aspirations:
While believing himself to be a protector to the weak, Kaine possess no lifetime goals, choosing to put other people's wellbeing before his own. But if you had to put him on the spot, he'd probably tell you that he's always had a fascination for opening his own flower shop filled with different succulent plants to provide some colour to people's households. Also he wants to find a weapon that transforms into a guitar or something. That would be cool.

History:
Kaine's childhood wasn't an extraordinary case when compared to other children. Unlike others, his parents weren’t killed by a mugger in front of his innocent eyes. Neither was he caught in a gruesome car accident which embedded a shard of metal into his brain, rendering him incapable of expressing emotions. Neither does he possess an immortal demon sealed inside his belly button. Nope. Not at all. However, he was born with synesthesia, something which became more and more prominent as he got older.
On a warm Summer night, a child was born. Named Kaine Griffard by parents Elaine and Lio Griffard, the young child was loved dearly, bringing joy to the happily married lovers as they moved to the quiet town of Annecy, France. Believing that the hustle and bustle of Shibusen wasn't right for the child yet. With Elaine being a talented Meister from Shibusen and Lio weapon heritage skipping out on his generation, choosing to help Shibusen in his own way by becoming a doctor, they both were excited yet curious on what their beautiful son would turn out to be or perhaps choose to be. Nonetheless, he would grow to understand that he would be showered with love and affection by the eager duo.
Once the child became five, it became very apparent that he would take after his mother, inheriting her wavy blonde hair, soft features and beautiful blue eyes along with very prominent personality traits from his father! Living a regular life, the child known as Kaine quickly made friends, he made enemies, during his time at school. Brought up by a Doctor and a Meister made for an interesting childhood, being taught things from both walks of life, whether it was being taught how to create basic medicines and ailments by his father, being immersed in his medical journals or being forced to attend Aikido club just so he knew how to deal with bullies who thought that putting their hands on a small child was wise. He was a bright child and coming from a varied background gave him an insatiable curiosity. Despite this, he remained humble and happy with what he had before him, choosing to avoid showing his ‘flashes of genius’ that would have set him apart from his classmates, instead helping others in anyway he could. He behaved well and avoided causing trouble, even when it was expected of him to do so. He’d simply just smile before going home and relaying what he learned that day to his parents’ amusement, filling his head with stories from their days at Shibusen, protecting the weak and eventually falling in love. It certainly wasn’t an upbringing that one would expect from someone who would achieve so much in the future.
As Kaine grew and grew each year, he slowly but surely became bored of his unknown career path and town by the age of eight, feeling as if he was trapped in a quiet mountain town where he’d spend half of his weeks gazing into the lake like an old man wanting to reclaim his youth. This was until one day he was introduced to the wonders of music by complete accident, stopping his mother from throwing out a bunch of vinyl during a routine house ‘cleanse’. From then he spent hours in his room, burning through piles of soothing jazz music, thrown into a world where everything was dim and suave, his eyes would trail off as the boy watched pink swirls softly dance across the ceiling. How could someone throw an album out made by a called Thelonious Monk or John Coltrane?! The fusion of traditional european and african styles was almost as if he was tasting a high-class dessert, it lingered in his ears and danced on his mind in a euphoric high. By the tender age of twelve, Kaine was completely immersed with music, being bought a ukulele and classes on his eleventh birthday. Taking huge glee in the stringed tool as he performed before his friends and neighbours, eventually ignoring the applause from his friends and family and hearing something else, almost as if something within them communicated with his very souls, filling the air with musical notes and a hue of ambient colours, filling him with happiness.
It wasn’t under a mysterious grandfather came to visit, that Kaine decided to make a decision that would change his life forever, finally opening his path to career. Providing something that Kaine affectionately wanted without being aware of it. Spending one of his usual days coming back from school to just sit by the pier and watch the sky transition into darkness before coming home, unaware of what was going to present itself in front of him. His small yet insignificant presence became raised by a mysterious old man, draped in brown robes that did nothing to hide his muscular frame, topped with shoulder length grey hair, a stubbly beard and a huge beaming smile which just seemed to never falter unless the owner was lost in thought. In Kaine’s eyes, what stood before him was something the boy needed, something he wanted. At the moment, a powerful avarice awakened within Kaine as he sought for one thing represented within this man; adventure. Van Fortier was his name, once a Meister like his daughter decided to pass the torch to his daughter’s generation to become a traveller. The old man was simple, he knew two things, enjoying life as a traveler and visiting his daughter at irregular times in her life, last reappearing when Kaine was just born before disappearing on another adventure. However this time he stuck around longer than usual, observing the almost routine life of his grandson and his increasing boredom before returning back to his daughter’s home and offering his daughter and son-in-law two choices; let Kaine fade into this town or become Van’s protege and travel across the land! Obviously without a second thought Kaine chose the second option! Finally! He loved this place and his lovely cottage in this beautiful mountainous town but it was time, he had to stretch his wings and truly find himself. Before Kaine knew it, he had left his original life in Annecy to travel with his grandfather. During their journey, Van taught the young boy things that he had only read in a book, the different songs of birds, the skill of fishing, playing different instruments and most importantly; living life of a carefree person.

It was during a journey through the Americas where Van would ask his excitable protege something he never thought about before; Do you want to go to Shibusen? Heck yeah! The excitement that ran through the boy's mind was indescribable! He could finally follow in his family's tradition and help others like his Mother and her father before him, building bonds with fellow students as they worked to maintain an order of balance and peace. That night his grandfather prepared a feast for the two, spending the night gazing at the stars and talking about the future and the at the same time. It was unusual for the two to discuss life like this but it certainly brought Kaine closer to his family's heritage and grandfather than ever before.
The next morning, Kaine woke to find his grandfather gone. His travelling supplies had disappeared except a letter which was addressed to Kaine from his parents. Being the curious person he was, Kaine opened the letter with curious eyes, taking out an ornately designed letter which revealed his new fate; an entrance to Shibusen. Excited and a little confused, Kaine would pack up his supplies, wrap his cloak around himself and set out on his new adventure; getting to Nevada.
Extra Notes:
Kaine speaks in a British accent, but when at times of stress or surprise he'll sometimes revert to his French tongue. Along with this, Kaine possesses very basic medical skills due to his father, allowing him to treat potentially fatal injuries long enough for an actual professional to work on.

“Ah, so this is Nevada… it’s hot.”
Kaine sat cross-legged on the roof of a pick-up truck, staring into the sky with amusement. Embracing the kiss of the Sun as it beat violently down from its kingdom in the heavens. His eyes gazed upon the endless horizon through sand goggles as he took notice of a mysterious ‘mountain’ sitting behind the horizon, gradually get closer. From first glance it looked dark and gloomy as heck. The sky he had known since he was born was as beautiful as ever, recalling the beautiful blue sea that held the clouds had now transitioned into a deep orange colour. The large orb with its toothy smile which held its place within the sky would normally bellow with hearty laughter, was now the complete opposite. Its determination to ignite the world with the light of day was now replaced with a droopy expression, almost like a young child trying to stay up late only to become a victim of slumber.
“I must ask kid, Are you SURE that you’re totally fine sitting on my roof? There is a seat inside the truck y’know”
A puzzled voice shouted from the speeding vehicle, questioning the reason why he picked up this hitchhiker and what he had against sitting inside cars. The driver was caucasian, middle-aged, stocky and just a tad smelly but he didn’t mind, Kaine didn’t mind either but was that the reason he chose the roof? (Who knows). But one thing this man did know was once he got behind a wheel he was in his element. A delivery driver who was transporting the latest chilled beverages for one of his clients in the city, living for number one and just seemed to find enjoyment in driving his beat-up truck across the Nevada desert. He chose to live away from the city to live with civilisation, too many weirdos lived in Death City for his liking and he didn’t need them sitting on the roof of his damn car. He couldn’t stand it anymore, he had to let this aloof boy know. The man exclaimed with a sense of concern in his voice “These damn students and their eccentric habits. You better not sue me if you fall off and die!”
“Haha! Nah, I’m not that clumsy sir! I’ve been doing stuff like this with my grandpa since I was a wee teen! But it was on trains and there was a time I almost got knocked off. Grandpa saved me though… maybe he’ll save me again!”
He laughed out loud, keeping one hand firmly rooted to the roof of the truck as he attempted to slick back his messy blond hair with the other, attempting to make himself look more presentable for whatever was waiting for him once he stepped foot into his destination. The driver was certain now. This man was a weirdo and the quicker he got rid of him that more at ease he would be. He beamed a bright white smile before coughing and spitting, forgetting that there was sand and that eating sand wasn’t something that people did. “Yuck…” he mumbled to himself before the mysterious mountain from earlier began to make itself known.
It wasn’t a mountain, it was a city. It looked too familiar, the architecture of the city was oddly European from a much older time. Why would a city of this era be in America out of all places?! It was so weird but it was so engrossing. His head begin to fill to the brim with stories from his childhood and his travels, remembering that his parents would put him to sleep with the fantasy of Shibusen, a world within the world where the Sun & Moon shone above rather than from rising from the East and setting in the West. Suddenly the vehicle came to a screeching halt, causing the young daydreamer to flip over the roof and land on the sandy floor below.
“Sorry fella, driving on sand is never pretty. Especially when you decide sitting on the top of a moving vehicle a wise idea!”
The driver exclaimed once more, letting out a satisfied sigh of relief, as they arrived at his destination in one piece and without getting a court date.
A small victory but whatever, he had drinks to hall in. Kaine quickly bounced back up, dusting the sand off his tunic before setting his brilliant blue eyes on what was before him. There it was, a trio huge Shinigami masks perched next to each other, decorating the other medieval castle-like entrance. He slowly removed his sand goggles as he stood before this collage of a city, taking a moment to breathe in the warm desert air through his lungs and letting out in a loud voice.
“I finally made it!”
His messy blond hair swayed slightly within the wind’s grasp as a huge smile beamed on his face, years after leaving his little french alpine village he finally arrived to his end goal; Shibusen. His mind quickly flashed back to reality as he turned his back on the city, realising the next step of his journey; joining his temporary friend in emptying the dusty truck and moving stacks of chilled beverages to the nearest death-themed convenience store.
