This was definitely the best cafeteria Noelle had ever been in. Normal school cafeterias were dreary, and hot, and altogether unhealthy. This one was interesting, and had a pretty exciting selection of foods, and she swore she saw cupcakes sitting daintily on a table near the end of the line. She was very pleased with what she found, though she couldn't eat any of the food. Her housewife of a brother had packed her lunch for the day, and it was surely filled with horribly cut heart-shaped sandwiches and embarrassing notes. She was actually dreading eating it, because Aiden wasn't exactly known for his cooking skills. She felt a little bad, though, because he was trying really hard to be a parent even though she didn't really need one. And the idea of how hard he was working was enough to keep her from throwing the brown paper bag into the trash can.
...she might grab a cupcake, though. Aiden owed her that much.
Noelle tried to make herself look smaller as she cut through the masses of people. She thought that coming a little late would help out with the crowd situation, and while it wasn't nearly as bad as she thought it would be, she still had to push her way around a few people to actually find a table. Thankfully, there were still plenty of empty tables for her to sit at. She didn't mind meeting new people, but the cafeteria was not the place to do it. Or she thought so, anyway.
A happy little smile brightened up her face as she finally got to the table she wanted--right by the window, no less--and sat down. She was actually a little hungry, even if the idea of eating her lunch was extremely unappealing. Upon opening the bag, she found exactly what she had expected: a sandwich, sloppily cut into something vaguely resembling a heart. There was also an apple, and a little juice box containing lemonade. There was also a bag of gummy bears, and a tiny yellow sticky note pressed to the back of the bag with embarrassing words she didn't even bother to read. Overall, it wasn't nearly as bad as she thought it would be. The sandwich tasted a little funky, she found upon taking one bite of it, but the rest was fine. This would do just fine, until she got home and hopefully Hannah would be there to make dinner.
...maybe the perky blonde would make pasta for dinner. That sounded yummy.
She found herself slowly zoning out, thinking happily about pasta. So she wasn't so aware of her surroundings anymore, and didn't really notice when someone walked up to her.

Oh dear. He was late, wasn’t he?
The idea of lunchtime was not one Espen was unfamiliar with. It was basically the only time Espen really talked to his siblings back at home. Well, that and the other meal times. Of course, lunch was the only meal at a time of day when classes were technically still active, so all of the students would come to the cafeteria at about the same time. Or most of them, at least.
Espen had meant to come to the cafeteria a bit early. Get the food he wanted, take a seat... but no. Espen just had to get lost. The school was confusing. Sure, he was used to big houses but not ones with so many similar rooms. When he had eventually found the place there were a ton of people around. But, oh well. Espen had still managed to get the food he wanted. Simple enough. An apple and a sandwich. Now the question was where to sit.
Almost all the tables were taken! Gah. This would simply not do! Espen had no problem with sitting with a stranger, but he couldn’t see any available seats at all from where he stood. Hmm... Ah! There was one! A girl that honestly looked a bit too young to be enrolled at Shibusen sat alone near a window. Surely she wouldn’t mind some company.
So, Espen walked up to the girl. Quite a cute girl actually. In many respects she reminded him of Sabina, his childhood friend. Or, rather, one respect. The hair was styled the same. Not the same colour, but the twin braids were something he associated with Sabina. Perhaps this girl would enjoy his company. Perhaps they’d even become friends, with luck. That’d be nice. Espen had yet to make friends with anyone here.
Espen set his tray in front of the chair opposite Noelle. Huh. She had a lunch in a brown paper bag. Perhaps she lived in death city and her mother had packed it for her. Again, she was a cute girl. Espen gave the girl a smile, though he wasn’t sure if she had actually noticed him approach. So, the boy spoke up. ”Excuse me.” He begun. Espen was not normally formal, but was told he should be around unfamiliars. An obvious Norwegian accent emanated from his voice, provided Noelle could distinguish a Norwegian accent. ”But, do you mind if I sit here. It seems this place is rather crowded.”
Espen didn’t wait for an answer. He sat down simply assuming the girl wouldn’t mind.

Pasta had made her think of Italy, which made her think of vacations. She had never really been on a vacation before, but the idea itself seemed wonderful. She’d like to go to the beach—a real beach, like in the Bahamas. She’d even settle for Florida, really. She knew her family couldn’t afford such a trip, but maybe if she saved up some money. She could get a part time job, or something. Though, it would take a long time to save up for a family of three on only a part time job’s salary. She didn’t know what she would do, anyway. Besides, there was still a lot more to focus on besides vacation. First, Aiden needed a stable job. And then they should probably think about buying a car.
A voice drew her out of ideas of pretty sports cars, and glazed over eyes came back into focus on a boy who had taken the liberty of sitting across from her at the table. He had a foreign look about him, and even had a fairly heavy accent that Noelle couldn’t place; it was a northern European one, or it sounded like it anyway. She couldn’t guess the specific country, though. How interesting, that Shibusen even attracted students from all over the world. She was pretty lucky to have been told about this place—it was clearly a good school, if someone came from all the way from wherever-he-was-from.
“I don’t mind,” she replied, rather needlessly she thought. He had already helped himself to a chair, and a lunch that was very similar to her own. She gave a quick glance around the room, not realizing how crowded it had truly become. She looked mildly impressed; yes, this was truly a good school with many, many students.
She peeled off the sticky note with her brother’s love in written form from the gummy bear packet, then offered it to the boy sitting across from her. “Want any?” She certainly wasn’t going to eat it. She had quite lost her appetite, after dreaming of pasta.

Oh goody. The girl didn’t mind him sitting there. Espen wasn’t sure what he would have done if she hadn’t. Sure, Espen had no trouble asking people for things when he needed something, but this sure simplified things! Very nice of her.
It also seemed as though Espen’s assumption of the girl living in Death City was probably accurate. She had an American accent. Or, at least, he thought it was an American accent. The thing about those was that there was a lot of different ones. Some were loud and bossy, but this one sounded a bit more subdued. Or perhaps that was just the girl herself. She was rather cute and tiny, after all.
Before Espen could actually thank the girl for her kindness, let alone ask her name, she offered him a packet of... something. He had no idea what it was. Whatever it was, the fact it was put in an aluminum packet was odd in it’s own right. Hm. Well, no sense wondering for five millennia! Might as well just ask the girl.
”I appreciate the gesture, but... I’m not quite sure what that is.” Espen said. He clearly had no idea how odd his words must have sounded. They probably had those back in Norway as well! Of course, Espen wouldn’t know that. Most stuff like that was prepared for him on the spot. Not prepackaged. Going on as if he had just said nothing, Espen spoke again. ”Besides, it’d be rude to accept such an offer when we don’t even know each other’s names!”
This cheerful remark probably should have been accompanied by Espen actually giving Noelle his name, but nope! Espen had been told to never give his name unless asked for it. A bit of a silly rule, but it had been insisted upon at home for some reason. Or at least he thought it had. Didn’t matter anyway. Now he hadn’t said anything in long enough that adding that little tidbit now might be cutting off Noelle’s speech.

She was silent for a moment, wondering if this guy was real or not. Did they not have gummy bears in Wherever-He-Was-From? Not to mention he had a pretty fancy way of talking. She wondered if English wasn't his first language? But even then, ESLs didn't use such fancy words. At least, she didn't think they would. Maybe it was just a quirk of Wherever-He-Was-From. (Which, she'd ask about eventually. Maybe.) "They're gummy bears," she told him, as if that was answer enough. Thankfully, that wasn't all that she gave him. "It's candy. You don't have these back home?" Well, there was a good time for him to tell her where he was from. Maybe she should have been more blunt about it? Nah, he seemed smart. He'd catch on to the subtle question. Well, hopefully. While yes he did seem smart, he still didn't know what gummy bears were.
Now he was saying that he couldn't take them because he didn't know her name. That was weird, because she's pretty sure she'd accept cupcakes from men in a sketchy van. (Not really, she was much smarter than that. But still, she'd accept candy from a classmate.) "Okay so if I tell you my name, you'll try them, right?" She didn't wait for an answer, though. She tore the corner of the bag enough to make a hole, then extended her arm out again in offering. "My name's Noelle." She waited expectantly for him to reach out and take the candy.
Was this guy in her class? She couldn't remember, really. There were so many faces in her class, so she didn't take time to memorize any of them. He looked to be around her age, or at least closer to her age than some of the other people in her class. She was actually pretty sure she was one of the youngest, and that was a little scary. She felt like most of the people around her could squash her--not that she'd let them, or anything.
Occasionally, her eyes drifted over toward the cupcakes. It would be rude to leave in the middle of the conversation. But cupcakes. No, she needed to be polite. She'd wait for a lull, then run and grab one real fast. She could grab two, and maybe this guy will eat one. But if not, she had no problem eating two cupcakes. Or three, but that wasn't very ladylike at all.

Gummy... bears...? What a peculiar name. Espen tilted his head to the side slightly and brought a hand up to his mouth. No, no. He had never heard of those before as hard as he tried to recall. But the girl said it was candy. Espen liked candy. Or, sweet candy at least. The sour kind was something he was not a fan of so much.
”I don’t think so...” Espen replied when the girl asked him if he didn’t have anything like that where he came from. ”Well, not that I’d know.” The thought of telling her where it actually was he hailed from did not cross Espen’s mind. Not that it was relevant. He probably wouldn’t have ever seen any even if he was from this country.
The girl went on to ask if he would try one if she gave him her name. Truth be told, he probably would have even if she hadn’t. He was curious. Very curious. Formality was something that could not be left ignored, though. So before Espen took any he’d give his own name too.
So her name was Noelle, was it? That was a nice name, though she had neglected to give her last. Oh well. Maybe that wasn’t a common formality around here. Espen really was clueless to this sort of thing. ”Of course! And that’s a nice name.” He said, cautiously taking one of the gummy bears from Noelle. ”As for me, I am Espen Vivian Losnedahl... the Second.” Noelle might have thought that name was a joke. It wasn’t. Espen then observed the bear before actually eating it.
Why, it looked like an actual bear! And was all squishy! Odd food. It didn’t look like food. Clearly this little crudely made sculpture of a bear was a toy as opposed to candy. Oh well. Espen was curious as to what it tasted like even if Noelle was just messing with him. So, he ate the little gummy.
Ah... that tasted surprisingly good! Not phenomenal, of course, but not bad either. The thing was sweet, so it was all good in Espen’s mind. ”Huh. It is quite good!” He said in a cheery voice.

What kind of place didn't have gummy bears? She was pretty sure they were European in origin. (Or, at least, that one brand sounded kind of Germanish.) What was even more peculiar was that he said he wouldn't know anyway. Her head cocked to the side a little, eyebrows furrowing a little. "Not a fan of candy?" That didn't seem to be the case, however he had been terribly vague before. Maybe he just didn't like gummy candy, though he could have told her that instead of what he said. Or, or, or! Maybe his parents were super strict and wouldn't let him have candy. She could understand that, because sometimes her fa-
...sometimes she wasn't allowed to have candy, either.
She beamed as he complimented her name, her left leg bouncing in excitement. "Thanks! My mom gave it to me." The only gift she ever got from her mom, so she treasured it dearly. Now it was his turn to give his name, and goodness it was a name. Her lips formed a hard line, and she seemed to be concentrating very hard. "Losne...Losen..." She pouted a bit, mostly because she couldn't say it but also a little because she still couldn't guess the country of origin. "I can just call you Espen, right?" Or Junior. She giggled at that thought. That was an American thing, wasn't it? He probably wouldn't get it.
It was a little amusing to watch him take the gummy bear; it was kind of like he thought it was going to growl at him, or something. Just to prove it wasn't dangerous or anything, she popped a couple into her mouth. Except, she had to keep herself from making a face because she hated the green ones, and she had happened to grab two of those.
A smile found its way to her face again, and she leaned forward over the table a little. "See? You've been missing out, Espen." She wondered what other kinds of candy he had missed out on. "Have you ever had kit kats? I'll bring you some tomorrow." That was getting a little ahead of herself, though. There wasn't a guarantee that she'd see him tomorrow. She coughed a little and sat back properly in her seat, trying to look a little more refined. "Or...whenever. What class are you in?" Maybe they'd be in the same class. It'd be nice, making a friend on the first day of school. Aiden would be happy, anyway. Or, if not friends, at least he was someone she knew. And that was almost as good as making a friend on the first day.

”Oh, no, I like candy.” Espen replied matter-of-factly. ”They just never bought already prepared foods at home.” Espen didn’t think anything he was saying was too odd or vague. He thought it perfectly normal to have cooks on hand at all times! Sabina did, he had, and the boy didn’t really know anyone else. Perhaps Noelle would be able to infer this little detail. Or perhaps not. Espen could always just answer if she asked.
Noelle went on to say how her mother had given her her name. Huh. Odd thing to say. Surely that was easily inferred. Espen didn’t mention this, however, for he was far too caught up in how cute Noelle looked trying to pronounce his last name. Was it a hard name to pronounce? Hm. Perhaps it was. Ah well. ”Ah, yes, Espen’s fine.” He replied with a chuckle.
Espen hadn’t noticed Noelle eat a few of the gummy bears herself. He was far too focused on observing the little creature before he ate it. Once he had eaten it, Noelle spoke again. The girl was smiling. Yes, yes. He had indeed been missing out! Why had such things been kept hidden from him for so long? And it looked to be a portable snack too. Man was he ever fortunate to have met Noelle today.
Two questions were asked of Espen. ”Hmmm...” He pondered the first question for a moment. His memory wasn’t great, so perhaps he had indeed had these “kit kats” before. ”I don’t think so.” He eventually concluded with a nod of his head. As for the second question, Espen answered almost immediately. ”I’m in the One Star classes. Weapon.”
Espen had no idea if he had seen Noelle before. Bad eyes. He could often not even see the board. Not that classes here seemed to matter too much... What really mattered was beating up kishin! Perhaps the classes didn’t help with that. Whatever. It’d be nice if Noelle was in his class...

Already prepared foods? What did that even mean? People did that in real life? She narrowed her eyes a little, glancing around cautiously to make sure no one was listening before leaning in closer. She even placed her hand next to her mouth, ensuring the utmost of privacy as she whispered "...you're not some prince, are you?" That would have been weird. But kind of cool, if she thought about it. A prince at her school, that had never happened before. Wouldn't there have been some body guards, though? Or the school would have made a bigger deal, right? That's what a normal school would do, but Shibusen wasn't normal. Maybe he was trying to keep it a secret? That made sense, too. In most of the cliche stories, the Prince just wanted to live a normal life. Espen did look kind of princely, and he even talked fancy.
Kit Kats were a little more understandable than the gummy bears, though she couldn't think of a logical reason why. "They're really yummy, and my brother always has a ton of them so I'll steal some for you." Aiden was actually very possessive of his chocolate, though she was sure he'd give them to her if she asked. She liked the idea of trying to steal them from his secret stash that he thought was hidden so well but really it was just behind a fake potted plant he kept in his bedroom.
"Oh! I'm a One Star, too!" She wondered if they would still be in separate classes, though, because he was a Weapon. She honestly didn't know if they were mixed classes or not, considering she had only been in one. "I'm a Meister, though." Being a Weapon sounded pretty cool, though. Better than being a Meister, actually. But the doctor had told her that Weapons didn't mysteriously appear; they had long family lines, which must have been pretty cool. Noelle, for all she knew, just randomly happened to be a Meister. Which was a little less...exciting.
"Is it fun being a weapon? What do you do?"
Even she wasn't really sure what she meant by the last bit. But she wanted to know more about this culture that she had only recently been exposed to.

Huh? A prince? Noelle had asked Espen such a very odd question. No, no. He wasn’t royalty. But, funnily enough, someone had asked him that before. That person who had tried to rob him! He had asked if Espen was royalty after he had seen the jewel Espen wore. The boy regarded the emerald on his chest for a second. Lucky emerald. It was his birthstone after all. A second later, Espen replied. ”No, I’m not.” He said. ”You’re not the first one to ask that, though!”
The subject was soon changed to chocolate. Noelle had a brother, then? Hm. Normally he might advise her not to steal from him, but he was oh so curious about these “kit kats”. Wait, now that he thought about it that name was odd too. Were they shaped like cats? Huh. Kinda weird to be shaping candy like animals not normally eaten. Oh well. The idea was pretty cute.
Oh, it seemed that Noelle was a one star too. That was neat. Most students were in NOT, right? The One Star students were the more impressive ones? Truth be told Espen wasn’t sure why he was a One Star. Perhaps it was that he could completely transform into a weapon. Or that he could transform his hand into the blade of a weapon. Either or. But meisters were different. Noelle must have been pretty impressive, then.
The next question was asking Espen what he did, as a weapon and if being a weapon was fun. What he did...? ”Hmmm...” Espen pondered for a moment. He honestly hadn’t the faintest idea! The fact he was a weapon in the first place was surprising enough, but Espen really hadn’t done anything as a weapon. ”Not sure. Never been really used as a weapon. Y’know, wielded by a meister. Have scared someone off because of it, though.”
With these words, Espen chuckled to himself. When he had done that it had been funny. The guy’s face and all. He put his right hand up as if he was attempting to answer a question in class, which then became shrouded in blue light for only a second. The next it had turned into the curved blade of an atgeir. Funnily enough, it seemed to be backwards, with the blade facing towards Espen as opposed to Noelle.

Noelle almost looked a little disappointed. "Of course I'm not the first. What other people have food prepared for them?" Though, that was probably a bad question for someone who didn't know any other lifestyle. Even if he wasn't a prince, he was someone important. "Nevermind, don't answer that." While she was still a little curious about the person across from her, she didn't really bother to pry into his personal life anymore. She'd certainly be angry if he started questioning her about her home life. He didn't seem angry with her for prying as far as she did, though you could never tell with some people. She'd rather play it safe, because angry people were dangerous people.
He started to talk about being a weapon, which spiked her interest once more. Never been used, huh? That was a little sad, for a weapon. Or it seemed so, anyway. But he was still pretty young looking, so it made sense that he didn't quite have a partner yet. She actually kind of liked that, in a way, they were on the same level. She didn't really appreciate being around people who one-upped her.
She was quite curious about the story behind his last comment, but she didn't really have time to question him on it. Suddenly he was doing something with his hand, and before she knew it, it had transformed into some sort of blade. Her eyes went wide and her mouth dropped open. "Whooooaaa!" She had never actually seen anyone transform before. She had been told about the Doctor's partner, and how he was an ax, but neither bothered to show her anything. "That's so cool!" She looked at her own hand, scowling. She couldn't do anything like that, could she? She had her little shocky thing, but that wasn't nearly as cool. She clearly got the short end of the stick.
A tiny sigh left her, and she leaned back in her seat a little. "Weapons are cooler than Meisters," she whined a little.

Espen had opened his mouth to answer Noelle’s question, but she had changed her mind. Why ask a question then decide you didn’t want answers for it? Ah, whatever. Espen shut his mouth, though he couldn’t help being a bit curious as to why she had not asked. Espen should probably ask, but he didn’t. For now. Maybe later he’d ask, though he’d probably end up forgetting to.
Once Espen had partially transformed, Noelle begun to sing his praises. Ah, yes. Pretty much anyone he ever showed it to did that, though he wasn’t really sure why. The whole “being a weapon” thing didn’t seem like a very big deal to Espen. So many people were already weapons, right? What made another one so special? The praise was kinda nice, though. Espen’s hand transformed back into it’s normal form, and he moved the fingers a bit. You know... just to make sure they still worked.
The smile Espen had soon pressed into a small frown at Noelle’s whining. Mostly because he wasn’t quite sure if he agreed with her or not. Espen had no idea what was so special about meisters when compared to regular people. Weapon was simple enough. Regular people just couldn’t wield weapons? Probably something like that. Either way, Espen didn’t like the whining so he made up a little lie to make Noelle feel better. ”Well, I’m not so sure about that.”
The smile had come back now, even if it wasn’t entirely genuine. ”Meisters get most of the glory, right?” He exclaimed. It was true. Weapons didn’t do much in terms of combat. They kinda just sat there. Or at least Espen thought that anyway. ”Maybe doing all the heavy lifting isn’t so fun, but maybe the fighting itself is fun?”
Espen wasn’t quite sure what his argument was anymore. He was bad at this. He just wanted Noelle to be smiling again.

It made sense that he disagreed; people always wanted what they didn't have. "Do they? I wouldn't know." She had met one Meister in her entire life, so far anyway, and he never made it sound like that. He and his partner were a pair--they did everything together, and got the glory together. That sort of thing happened in the real world, too. If the tool was useless, the user couldn't do anything. And tools don't just get up and do things on their own. But people like Espen were special. He could get up, and probably stab someone all on his own. She couldn't do that, not without exterior assistance.
She couldn't really say fighting was fun, though the only fighting she had ever done was to protect herself. And that was in no way fun at all. "Maybe if you're strong..." But I am not She looked up, looking a little thoughtful. "I don't fight for sport, or anything...just to stay safe." But he was safe in weapon form, wasn't he? No cut throats, no broken arms, no stabbing through the heart. The weapon would make it out alive, but the Meister had smaller chances. And she understood that this wasn't the safest of routes for her to take--she had argued with Aiden over it for days--but she felt like this was the only way for her to get things into gear. She didn't want to live in fear anymore. And the idea of dying wasn't even really scary to her, not when she had spent so long wishing to do so, but the idea of leaving things behind was a little unsettling.
That was a dreary thought, so she quickly switched focuses. "But I guess there are pros and cons to everything; at least I can shock people, and that's pretty cool." Her expression lit up as her eyes shot across the room to the dying line of people. "Want a cupcake?" she randomly blurted out, waiting expectantly for an answer. She'd only get one if he did, because it was awkward to eat something when the other person was just watching you eat it.

Espen shrugged, now completely forgetting about what he was arguing. It was all the same to him. Meisters and weapons both intended Shibusen. Surely there wasn’t too much of a difference. Espen would have to study meisters to see what the actual difference was. Perhaps Noelle could show off her abilities for him. Reading about it would be too boring.
Back to the self depreciating. Hmmm... This was no fun. Seems Espen had made her even more sad. Now he really had no idea how to make Noelle feel better. So, Espen decided to stay quiet. Hopefully he’d get a chance to change the subject, or cheer the girl up without fail. The latter was unlikely, though. Espen wasn’t very good at that sort of thing, honestly.
So, Noelle didn’t like to fight. Not surprising. Espen didn’t fight for fun either, but she was also very small. Hah, wouldn’t surprise him if they fought in similar ways. Though Espen could probably take a hit better than her. Not that all that really mattered... Espen wouldn’t use his fighting skills much. Oh well.
Then Noelle said something else. Ah! She sounded much more chipper now! That was good. Espen mirrored this chipperness when he replied. ”Shock people? Ah! I didn’t even know meisters could do stuff like that!” He said. Espen ran a hand through his hair. Looked like sad-Noelle was no more. Good. He didn’t like that Noelle very much.
Turned out Espen didn’t even need to reply to that line. Noelle then changed the subject completely. Cupcake? Espen actually knew what that was. Espen was a bit surprised by the sudden question, but answered in his normal cheery tone nonetheless. ”Uh, sure!” After he had said this, Espen quickly glanced at the tray in front of him. He hadn’t even touched his tray yet. Perhaps he should do that. But, at the same time, sweets were oh so nice. He wasn’t going to change his answer.

Noelle gave a tiny shrug, a little unsure of herself. "I assume all Meisters can do it...no one's really talked about it, though." She could at least take pride that she knew at least a little more about Meisters than Espen did, though their levels of knowledge weren't very far apart at all. Espen probably had someone in his family like him, who actually taught him things about what he was. That sounded nice, and she'd like to maybe hear about it someday. But not now; there were more pressing issues to be addressed.
Like cupcakes.
Her eyes twinkled, so pleased with his answer was she. She was so glad he said yes, because she didn't know if she could finish this first day without a cupcake. Espen hadn't really eaten anything of real sustenance yet, but Noelle couldn't really find it in herself to care. Life was too short to save dessert for last. She hopped out of her seat, gesturing for Espen to follow her. She practically skipped over to the cupcakes, not checking to see whether he actually came with her or not. She leaned over the bar filled with desserts, taking her sweet time in picking the best looking cupcake. "What's your favorite?" she asked, finally glancing over to where Espen was.
While waiting for him to answer, she picked up a favorite of her own: a chocolate cupcake. She at least had the decency to wait until the traversed back to the table. Though it was a hard urge to fight, because she really just wanted to go ahead and eat it. But that was rude, and so not cute.
She found herself relieved that Espen at least knew what a cupcake was. That was a pretty universal dessert, she supposed, but she had thought gummy bears were too. He sure was interesting; she hoped it ended up that they were in the same class because she wanted to become friends with someone like him. He was a refreshing change of events after dealing with her loud and clingy brother. And she had never really had friends back in Seattle, mostly because she didn't get out much at the time. So this would be nice. She could deal with this not really prince and his odd mannerisms and weird lack of knowledge for packaged candy.
