There was no pleasing this girl, huh? Espen pouted slightly at Noelle’s remark. Surely not all meisters could do such things. Especially not those in NOT classes. Unless that was just what made meisters meisters. Oh, it would have been nice to actually know what meisters did and stuff. He needed to find one to partner with, right? Something like that.
Noelle seemed to be a great bit happier when Espen said he wanted a cupcake. Perhaps she really liked those. Or maybe she was just happy Espen knew they existed. Noelle probably thought him an idiot for not knowing what those gummy bears were. But, hey. She still seemed to like him.
Soon the girl got up, and gestured for Espen to follow. So, he did exactly that. Espen fiddled with one of his coat’s sleeves as he walked. He hadn’t put it on just right and the shirt sleeves underneath had folded. Felt kinda funny. This distraction had caused him to not notice exactly how excited the girl was. Kinda a shame, really. If Espen knew exactly how much the girl liked cupcakes he’d get her a gourmet one or something. His attention snapped onto Noelle when she spoke.
”Hmmm...” Espen looked thoughtful for a second. Favorite? As in flavor? There was so many of those that Espen hadn’t any clue which he liked the most. The sweetest one, surely. But that was a tie between a bunch of flavours. He hadn’t eaten enough cupcakes in his life to know which was the bestest. He’d just make sure to not grab something like red velvet or something. Eck. ”Not quite sure. Vanilla is nice, though!” He said finally, taking one of the vanilla cupcakes.
When the two had sat back down again, Espen’s mind begun to drift back to the whole meister business. Meisters partnered with weapons. That much Espen knew. The weapon Espen was he hadn’t even heard of until he fully transformed into it. So Noelle’s partner might be some super weird weapon that was even more obscure than an atgeir. He was quite curious about that now.
But that implied Noelle even had a partner. Espen sure didn’t. He wasn’t quite sure how long she had been at the school. Had she said that already? Maybe. Whatever. Espen could ask if she had a weapon partner. ”So, you have a weapon partner yet?” Espen asked, cheery as ever. ”I’ve yet to find a meister partner, but I’ve also only been around for a few days, so...”

Vanilla was a rather boring choice, but she did recognize that it was a simple and sweet flavor. She had just expected something more elaborate, since he seemed the fancy type. She gave a little nod of acknowledgement, as though she approved. While she didn't like vanilla cupcakes, she did like vanilla ice cream. "They're all too yummy to choose...but I'm in a chocolate mood today," she made a comment of her own. She'd probably eat any flavor of cupcake, even vanilla. Strawberry was really good, too, but she didn't see any of those on display. She'd have to find a bakery in town next time one of her guardians had a day off.
Once they were safely back at their table, she began to delicately pull at the wrapping that protected her precious treat. Just before she could take a bite out of it, though, Espen had begun speaking with her gain. She gently, a little forlornly, set the cupcake back down onto the table and looked back to her lunch buddy. "This is my first day of school, so you're the first person I've met," she answered rather simply, though it was a relief to hear that he had only been here a short amount of time. She had talked with some teachers during the morning, and perhaps she said a few words to the girl sitting next to her in class though she couldn't remember it well, but other than that Espen was the first.
That did lead on to an interesting topic, though. "How does one find a partner?" she asked, tilting her head to the side a little. "Do I have to take a test, or something?" The good doctor hadn't told her anything about that; the only thing he said on the matter was that eventually she'd have a partner of her own. And, naturally, Aiden and Hannah couldn't help her on the subject at all. So she was going into this completely blind, though she didn't think she was struggling too much.
Since her question had been asked, she decided to put attention on her cupcake once more. She picked it up and took a small bite, waiting for Espen to hopefully answer her question.

Yes, yes. Chocolate was always a good choice. Erm, almost always. Sure, Espen had never tasted a sour chocolate before but there was bitter ones. And his brother had liked that bitter one mixed with hot peppers. Gah, what a weird kid that one was. ”Mhm. It does tend to be a good choice.” Espen commented. It was good to know Noelle liked foods that weren’t obscure sculptures of animals.
Espen sat back down and put the cupcake to the side. For now. To be honest, Espen was a slow eater. Good table manners were engraved into his mind. You weren’t supposed to eat while talking, and you were supposed to keep up a conversation as well. Not to say Noelle had bad manners, or anything. Truth be told, Espen didn’t care about that sort of thing very much. He was much less uptight than his siblings.
So, this was Noelle’s first day? That would explain why someone as cute as her was all by herself. ”I am?” Espen asked in response, though the question was rhetorical. ”Well, I must be quite lucky today, then.” Luck was something Espen thought about a lot. Probably more than he should. A lot of people found that to be his oddest trait. Which said a lot, considering we’re talking about Espen here.
Espen was about to finally take a bite of his cupcake when Noelle asked him another question. So, Espen put the treat down and spoke. ”Test...?” Espen echoed Noelle’s words. Truth be told, he wasn’t quite sure. They had never really brought that up in the class lectures, and Espen didn’t have the attention span to read all that information on the letter he had gotten when he first came to Shibusen that probably said everything he needed to know. ”I was under the assumption they just kind of partnered up so long as they were both One Star or whatever...”

He was really, really weird. Shouldn't today have been lucky for her, not the other way around? She couldn't help but snicker at that, shaking her head slightly. "I should say that, no you!" But she was smiling, so she wasn't scolding him or anything. Just poking a little fun. But in all truth, a school year started off better when you met someone on your first day. Of course, his first day had only been a few days ago so he was still going through the worst of it. So maybe it was lucky for him after all, because now they both had a new friend. It'd be a little sad to think that he hadn't made any other friends yet, though. Even if he was a weirdo, he was a very nice weirdo.
Okay, so there wasn't a test or anything for partners. Noelle didn't mind either way, because she was a fairly good test taker. But that made the process a little easier, but also scarier. She could bump into any old weirdo and end up partnered with them. Of course, there probably weren't any bad people here, were there? There were bad people everywhere, but this was a school dedicated to helping the world, wasn't it? So it wasn't like she'd end up with some creep.
If it was just random, then she could even end up with Espen, couldn't she? That'd be weird to just ask, though. He was, after all, the first person she had met so far. And that was a little on the desperate side.
"That's a lot easier than I thought..." she noted, speaking up only after she had finished her cupcake. She thought compatibility had a lot to do with it, but then again she supposed you didn't actually have to get along with someone to work with them. It was just really helpful. Though she could see herself getting along with Espen very well--they were already doing pretty well friendship wise.
She hummed in thought a little, before looking at him once more. "What kind of partner do you want?" Surely he'd thought about it, right? He wanted a strong partner, definitely. She could understand that.

Espen did not much more than tilt his head at Noelle’s remark. Such an odd statement, and the fact Noelle was smiling when she said it confused him equally. This girl seemed to be full of oddities. But this confused expression didn’t last for very long. It was replaced with a pleasant, albeit a bit nervous, smile. ”You think?” He managed to reply. Rhetorical question. This Noelle sure was weird... But, at least she was also nice. Espen really didn’t mind weirdness.
There was a pause while Noelle finished eating her cupcake to actually speak up again. The nervousness vanished from Espen’s face. No need to be nervous! It was obvious Noelle had not picked up on his good mannerisms, and therefore wouldn’t ask him any questions about it or something.
Eventually Noelle did speak, though. Easier than she thought? Huh. ”Well, you still actually need to find someone who’s compatible with you...” Espen said. He then shifted his eyes away, looking to pout slightly. ”Anyone who’s tried to wield me burnt their hands...” Those words were brought down to not much more than a mutter, as if Espen was complaining to himself as opposed to Noelle.
Espen shifted his eyes back to Noelle when she asked him a question. What kind of partner? Might sound weird to her, but Espen had really not given this whole ordeal much thought. He didn’t know how things worked around here, so he didn’t worry about it. Or didn’t worry about it too much, at the very least. Besides, there didn’t seem to be as much of a difference between meisters. Espen replied with a shrug. ”I’m not picky.” He added.
Under normal circumstances, Espen would have asked Noelle if she had any preferences. That’d make sense. But, nope! Espen was wondering a different thing right now. He leaned a bit forward, staring intently at the girl in front of him. ”And because I have yet to meet anyone who can actually wield me, I can’t afford to be picky. But I wonder if you could...”

So yes, compatibility was important. But on what level? Was it personality wise, or did it have something to do with chemicals? She read somewhere that you were naturally attracted to people who gave off compatible chemicals. It could have been a soul thing, too, though she had no clue how to judge that. Was there a way to look into the soul? Thankfully, she didn't have to ponder over it long. She had almost missed it, so lost in thought had she been, but she distinctly caught the word "burnt". That definitely sounded chemical. "Burns? Are you hot?" She grinned after the lighthearted statement, leaning forward a bit to catch his attention once more. She started to reach out, to playfully poke him, but quickly retracted her hand hopefully before he even noticed it. "Maybe they weren't worthy, like King Arthur and his sword-in-the-stone. That makes you pretty special, you know?" She hadn't actually read of King Arthur's tales, however she did see that children's movie so she knew enough to reference it.
Noelle supposed that no one could really afford to be picky, but some standards had to be set--or she thought so, anyway. She absolutely would not get along with anyone loud, or anyone clingy. She abhorred clingy people. But, in a way, Espen did have his own standard: someone had to be able to touch him, first. He even started to suggest that she give it a try, and without missing a beat she answered with a "I'll give it a shot." She said it mostly in an attempt to make him feel better, to make the message clear that she wasn't afraid of getting burned. However, she didn't have much confidence that she would be the King Arthur in this situation. She wasn't special, or anything.
She pushed herself to her feet, giving him an encouraging smile and singing out a "No fear~" Though she wasn't sure what to do from there. She was a little excited about seeing a full transformation, but she didn't know what that entailed. Did they have to hold hands, or something? She most certainly did not want to do that. She faltered a bit, looking a little more unsure of herself now. Her gaze dropped to the table top, where her hands were resting. "...but my hands are gross..." Maybe he had gloves on him, or something. That seemed like a fancy thing to do, and Espen was a pretty fancy person.

Noelle’s comment didn’t succeed in doing much more than making Espen pout even more. Of course, his pouting was mostly in jest. There was no other response to the hot comment. It was yet another peculiar comment Espen didn’t really get. He had already showed her what kind of weapon he was. And if she meant hot as in how he was feeling right now, surely she could tell how devoid of rosiness his cheeks were. Or perhaps she meant something else entirely... huh.
Now the next comment was something Espen actually knew about. Ah, yes. Arianne had read him those stories when he was younger. They always used such big words and he never liked them very much, but Espen did know the general idea of them. Only those worthy of the sword could pull it out of the stone or something like that. ”Possibly.” He replied with another shrug. ”But if that’s the case, then I’m sure it must be near impossible for a meister to find a weapon they’re ‘worthy’ of! I’ve seen a ton of weapons more interesting than me...”
Being a meister sounded like hard work. Not only did it now seem like finding a weapon was a chore, but they also had to do most of the work in combat. As far as Espen knew, weapons sat around and did nothing. He didn’t really care either way, but perhaps Noelle did? A lot of people probably cared about that kinda thing. People were weird.
Noelle then said she’d give wielding Espen’s weapon form a shot! Espen couldn’t help but break into a cheerful smile at Noelle’s words. She had pushed herself up to her feet, but Espen remained sitting down. He didn’t really need to stand or anything to transform, so why bother?
After singing out a little tune, Noelle went on to say how her hands were all gross. Eh? They didn’t look gross. Not deformed or anything like that. Espen’s cheerful smile never left his face, but for a second he looked a bit confused. Kinda a goofy expression, really. ”Ah, that doesn’t matter!” The boy cheered, leaning forward. He now stood up somewhat, just so he could actually reach Noelle’s hands. He then attempted to hold them.
Should Espen have succeeded in that, he spoke. ”Alright! Let’s do this!” With that chipper exclamation, Espen cloaked himself in a blue light. That bright light must have drawn quite a few heads. Not that Espen cared! A moment later, and he had fully transformed into a demon atgeir. Hopefully Noelle would be holding him.
As fancy as Espen might have been in flesh and blood, his weapon form was much more down played. A silver blade at one end and a pointed bit at the other. The staff connecting those two was just a simple metal. The only thing that stood out on the weapon was a blue ribbon. Just like the one Espen wore in his hair.
”There we are...” Espen said once he had transformed. He just hoped Noelle wouldn’t get burnt because of him...

He didn't seem to approve of Noelle's theory, which was fine with her. "But you're the most interesting Weapon I've ever met," she assured him, and it was absolutely true. Granted, he was one of two weapons that she had ever met. And the other was a flamboyant doctor's partner who wouldn't tell her anything about himself besides declaring how amazing he was. But Espen didn't need to know any of that, not right now anyway. Though, she didn't think it'd really help him feel better anyway. At least, her last attempt didn't seem to perk him up any. She kind of knew all along that she wasn't the best at comforting. Actually, she was hoping that she would get better at that as she got more used to actually dealing with people. It's kind of what she wanted to do with her life, after all. It would be a huge shame if she sucked at it.
Though, maybe she wasn't quite as bad at encouragement as she thought, because Espen looked happy again. But he didn't stand up with her, and she wondered if she was not doing things correctly. It was only a fleeting thought, because Espen had reached out to grab her hands. She looked a little taken aback, by both the action and his words--because it did matter. It mattered a lot to her. She felt like she was infecting him just by touching him.
She didn't pull away, though. Partly because if she was going to get a partner, this was something she would probably need to get used to. And also partly because no one had ever held her hands before, and it was kind of a weird feeling. But it wasn't an unwelcome feeling or anything. She actually kind of liked it, so much so that she found herself smiling at the boy and experimentally squeezing his hands.
His words pulled her out of her thoughts about hand-holding, and she focused just in time to see him be covered in a blue light. It was bright, but no so much that it hurt to look at or anything. It was actually really pretty, and she found herself entranced by it. Weapons are really cool, was really the only thing she could think before she realized she was now holding what kind of looked like a spear. She stumbled a bit, adjusting her grip so that she didn't drop her new friend and even holding him closer to her chest, looking down at the atgeir with a worried expression--like she was checking on him, or something.
She broke into a grin as he spoke, eyes searching the long pole to try and figure out where the voice was coming from. "You can talk!" she exclaimed, looking absolutely giddy at that piece of news. She hadn't really expected him to be able to talk in that form, but she was so happy that he could! It would be a little awkward if she just stood there holding a pole, especially since the pole was actually a bit taller than she was.
Her expression fell into a more somber mood as she seemed to realize something, and she held the atgeir a little farther away from herself so that she could look at it better. "When is it supposed to start hurting?" she asked. Was there a lag of some kind? Would she actually feel the pain, or would burns just appear on her hands? That seemed a little silly, but it was the only thing she could come up with for her current lack of burning sensations.

Noelle’s words did not reassure Espen very much. Not that he really needed all this reassurance. Espen wasn’t sad! He just didn’t want Noelle to feel inadequate compared to him or something like that.
Sabina had done that a lot. She always praised Espen to the point where she made herself sad for not being as good as him. Or rather as she had made him up to be. Espen rarely lived up to what people like Sabina said he was like. Perhaps all girls with braids were like that? That was a definite possibility. Espen would have to meet more girls with braids to see.
Regardless, Espen said nothing more in response to Noelle. She had just gotten here, so surely she had yet to see many weapons. But she’d argue with him about it anyway! This nonsense was getting repetitive. Which was basically the opposite of fun.
Alrighty. Espen had successfully transformed into weapon form, with Noelle holding him no less! But... there was a slight problem. An atgeir was supposed to be just a bit shorter than the person wielding it. But, Noelle was shorter. Not tooooo significantly shorter, but still shorter. Surely Noelle wouldn’t want to partner with a weapon she could not wield efficiently. That was a shame...
For Noelle could actually wield Espen! She would find that, despite Espen being so much bigger than her, he wasn’t putting her off balance. Why, his weapon form was light as a feather! People without compatible wavelengths would have found him to be too heavy to lift for very long. But it looked like these two souls could work together. That just made it even worse that Noelle surely wouldn’t like to battle with him.
After Espen had spoken, Noelle commented on it. ”Yep! All weapons can!” He replied happily. ”...I think anyway.” To be honest, Espen wasn’t quite sure of the powers of all other weapons. Hell, he might have simply been really weird. But talking in weapon form must be useful, so it wasn’t like he was complaining. Plus, Noelle thought it was neat.
A soft ”hm?” escaped Espen’s lips when Noelle asked when it was supposed to hurt. Surely she had established that the two were compatible, no? She was still expecting a burning feeling. ”Right when you pick me up.” He replied, simply. Then, the boy reverted back to his normal form. He sat where he had before. ”But, looks like our souls are compatible. Hence why no burnt hands.”

She wondered what it felt like to be a weapon. Did it feel weird, being held by someone? It didn't tickle or anything, did it? Noelle felt like she would be an extremely ticklish weapon. Or maybe he couldn't feel it at all? It was a really unfamiliar concept, and she wanted to sit and talk with Espen about it more later. Actually, she wanted to sit and talk about a lot of things, because he didn't hurt her or anything so that must have meant that they were compatible--and that made them partners, didn't it? And she wanted to get to know her partner well, so she wanted to talk about many, many things. Everything. This was actually a very exciting feeling, having found a partner. She felt like she had just saved herself a lot of stress and worry in the future. She certainly hadn't expected this good fortune on her first day of school--she wondered if that was some kind of record, or something? She was under the impression that it took much longer.
Before she could really think about it, the atgeir was gone and Espen had returned, and he moved to sit in his seat once more. He didn't look as excited as she was, though. She expected much more joy to come from him, considering it had been so difficult for him to find someone who could hold him. She actually, honestly, expected some sort of hug or loud exclamation. (Though, admittedly she didn't know anything about the culture he came from so those things could have been very odd for him.) And while she was thankful he didn't touch her further, she was a little pouty about his lack of enthusiasm.
Maybe he was secretly hoping that she hadn't been able to hold him, and was now disappointed about being stuck with her? She could understand a little, because she honestly hadn't expected things to work out as well as they did either. But that was a little rude, acting that way before he even knew her very well.
Oh, but wait. She had to remind herself that she couldn't actually be sure if he felt that way or not. So she calmly sat down, straightening her skirt rather dramatically and flipping a pigtail over her shoulder before looking at Espen once more. Despite her refined looking behavior, though, she blurted out a "Aren't you happy? It worked!" She took a deep breath, as though composing herself, before continuing, this time a little more delicately. "Did you want a different partner? I understand if you do." Little girls weren't scary, or intimidating. (Though she scared her brother often enough.) And she was a little short, so she wondered if it felt awkward for him. He wasn't heavy or anything, though, so it wasn't like she wasn't strong enough to hold him. And with training she could figure out how to use him; she was an incredibly fast learner.
She could easily make those arguments, but in the end she wasn't going to force him into partnership or anything. He was a good partner for her, she thought, for many reasons. But that didn't mean she was a good partner for him. And she'd be an adult and accept that. After lots of candy. And maybe some ice cream.

Espen also wanted to talk to Noelle for longer. However, that might have been a bit difficult. For multiple reasons. For starters, Noelle surely would not want to partner with a weapon who didn’t fit her! Sure it was all the rage to wear jeans two sizes too small now a days but Espen was more like two sizes too big. And an atgeir was a bit more than a fashion statement. Second, lunch was just about ending now. Shame too. Espen had barely touched his food. Hm... He could probably take that back to his dorm or something... Or maybe miss the next class? It was History. Espen didn’t need to go to History class.
Or... perhaps Espen had misread Noelle. He had not had enough subjects to read expressions on. Both Arianne and Sabina kept their emotions neatly tucked away and they were the only two people Espen had talked to on a regular basis. He did not see enough of his many siblings to practise that sort of thing with them. But regardless, Noelle looked excited! Why on earth was the girl excited? But that excitement soon turned to pouts when she realized Espen did not share the enthusiasm. Gah. He had made her upset. Again. Why were females so hard to talk to?
Noelle then proceeded to act in a dramatic manner. The kind of manner Sabina would act in when she wanted to make a point out of Espen. Despite the girl being very outgoing most of the time, she became as proper as the Queen of Norway herself when she was bothered about something. Perhaps that was what Noelle was doing. She must have been really really mad.
But then the girl just blurted out her words. Sabina would have never done that. She might have shot a look or two but would have talked like a proper lady in her angry state. And with a tongue that could cut like a sharp knife no less. Noelle was not like that. At all. Refreshing. Espen mentally sighed in relief. Her words were odd though. Espen raised an eyebrow.
”Did you not notice?” He asked her, as if the atgeir’s height being an issue was an obvious problem. Surely it was. No one would think that a weapon was supposed to be bigger than the wielder herself, right? Gah, whatever. Espen shifted his glance away for a moment before looking back. This was kinda an embarrassing conundrum, to be honest. For both him and Noelle. The fact he had to point it out made it even worse. ”That’s not it at all!” He suddenly exclaimed. Espen was working himself up now. ”It’s just... you see... my weapon form is taller than you are. I thought you wouldn’t want to wield a weapon that was too big for you.”
Those words were accompanied by a nervous smile. Hopefully Noelle didn’t get upset by that.

Did she not notice? Did she not notice what? Perhaps he had made it clear that he didn't want to be partners, and she had missed it? She wasn't the type to miss things; her teachers always complimented her on how observant she was. She would have picked up on such displeasure if he had revealed even a bit of it. After all, she had ten years of practice to figure out how to tell when someone didn't want to be around her. She understood, and she couldn't blame anyone for it. But she had to fight to keep her expression from crumbling under the weight of familiar feelings of not being wanted. Thankfully, she was well practiced in this area as well, and was able to keep a straight face, though a slightly confused one. And if he had any skills at reading people, or happened to have some strong sense of empathy, he'd probably catch the flash of hurt in her eyes. But he wasn't even looking at her, so he probably didn't notice.
What did finally break her calm facade was his firm denial of everything she was previously thinking. She looked rather taken aback, blinking a few times as she tried to comprehend the meaning of his words.
He was worried about being taller than her? That was the most ridiculous thing she had ever heard, but at the same time the most beautiful. So she wasn't unwanted, it seemed. She could have drowned in the relief crashing over her. She even let out a huge breath she didn't know she was holding, a relieved sound escaping with it. (She honestly couldn't tell if it was a laugh or a sob.) "That's what you were worried about?" she asked, more giggles bubbling forth from her very core. She leaned forward over the table with a smile that looked like it was going to split her face in two. Honey eyes searched for the exotic shade of teal. "I'm only fourteen. I'll grow a lot, you know." She'd get taller, it wasn't as though she were stuck at this height for the rest of her life. She looked up to the ceiling in thought for a split second, before going back to staring at him. "And...and I'll drink lots of milk, how does that sound?" She wasn't particularly fond of milk, but if it made her taller faster than she'd drink it every day.
She straightened up in her seat, looking quite proud of herself for finding a solution to their problem. "So we can be partners, right?" While she looked as though he had already said yes, in the back of her mind she knew that he could still reject her. And it would be very gentle in kind, that she was sure of. Espen was a kind person, so that just made sense. Though she would rather think that he didn't have any further problems with partnering with her.

Espen did not notice the subtle emotions Noelle showed him. It was commonplace for men to not note how a female felt, and Espen was no exception to this. He was the kind of person who figured everything was fine even when it clearly wasn’t. Damn optimism screwed him over a lot.
When he had shifted his eyes back to Noelle, Espen noted her new expression. It had been completely calm a moment or two ago, but now she looked surprised. Espen had looked a bit confused earlier, but that emotion had been substituted with embarrassment. But looking at Noelle be confused made him look confused too. Espen would have spoke up after the moment or two of silence that followed, if Noelle hadn’t done that for him.
The girl let out a deep breathe, as if she had been relieved by... something or another. Accompanied by an odd sound Espen really couldn’t make out. His face went completely blank at her next words. She was... patronizing him? Not really what Espen expected.
But it turned out his worries were unfounded. Why? Noelle was sure she’d grow taller. Huh. Espen hadn’t even thought of that! He was pretty sure his weapon form did not grow, as it was taller than him once upon a time but now he was taller than it. Yes, yes. This was great news! Espen looked much happier now. Though his smile was not nearly as big as the meister’s, he looked obviously happy.
Noelle had promised to drink lots of milk too. ”And I’ll hold you to that promise.” He replied with a slight smirk, hoping Noelle would infer that he meant her suggestion sounded good. Espen did not like milk very much either. He often only drank it with sweets so he could eat more sweets without his stomach getting upset. Perhaps he’d drink a lot too. Just so Noelle wasn’t alone in her milk-drinking activities.
There was another pause after Noelle asked her question. But then Espen spoke. ”Well, if you want to...” He spoke softly until his voice suddenly became a loud exclamation. ”Of course!”
