“HrrrrrrAUGH!” The muscles in his back bulging and shifting, Nolan growled out an exclamation as he threw the large, spherical thirty-five pound weight, watching as it fell to the ground some distance away with an audible thud. Jogging over to the ball, he shook his head to rid his hair of excess sweat that had built up. “Twenty-one meters? Awh yeah!” He shouted, fist-pumping into the air. That was a new personal record.
Breathing heavily, he carried the weight back over to the throwing circle, letting it fall to the ground so he could stretch his arms. Nolan was wearing a simple white tank, with black-and-red gym shorts and similarly colored sneakers. He was one to dress for practicality rather than presentation, although he was getting some interesting looks from some random students passing by on the running track. He winked playfully at a particular group of girls that were glancing his way, earning several giggles in return. Turning towards the bleachers, he walked over to where his gym bag was to pull out a water bottle. A few gulps later and he was refreshed and ready for yet another go at the weight tossing, so upon returning to the throwing circle he bent over to grab the ball’s handle. His back to the landing area, Nolan grunted as he swung the weight overhead to gain momentum, and then transitioned into a spinning position. Turning heel-to-toe about four times across the ring, he released the weight towards the target once he had reached the edge of the throwing circle. “HrrrrAH!”
Although he had been talking on the phone regularly with his parents, lately Nolan had been feeling rather homesick. He hadn’t exactly considered the fact that Death City was completely surrounded by nothing but desert. He missed the lush liveliness of the Canadian forests back home, the musty smell of decomposing leaves on the forest floor and the woodiness of the bark. He found that exercising would relieve him of some of these negative feelings, but only as long as he was exerting himself about as much as he would back home cutting down trees and chopping them into firewood. Sighing, he absentmindedly partial transformed from the sudden wave of nostalgia. He didn’t notice this until he had made his way over to the thrown weight, bending down to pick it up but instead hearing the distinctive clank of his steel hatchet hand colliding with the metal ball. Snorting, Nolan leaned backwards and guffawed, finding the situation all too funny. “Gahahahaha! Sorry, Nolan, I don’t think that'll work out all that well, eh?”

Lucia absolutely hated training. It was always the worst part of her day. There was no story to it: just warm up, exercise, cool down, repeat. So boring. So annoyingly painful. Her mind fumed in a scribble of frustrated thoughts as she circled the track again and again and again. She kept glancing at her watch, but the time ticked away at a snail's pace.
Twenty minutes to go.
Nineteen and a half.
Nineteen and a quarter.
Lucia's ponytail swished behind her as she maintained a steady pace. All she had to do was keep running in circles. And running. And running. How was anybody supposed to enjoy something like this? As much as she wanted to stop, she knew she had to keep moving. This was for her future, a habit that had been ingrained within her from the days her parents had begun to train her as a meister. Despite her hatred for it, she couldn't bring herself to ignore the faded echoes of her parents calling out times as she ran around the track at her hometown. They were the ones who had convinced her that all this pointless running had a purpose. Lucia had yet to see the results they were talking about, but she continued to strive for it anyway.
Several laps later Lucia began to wind down to a walk. The track still had some runners zipping around the inner lanes, a few gaggles of students sat lazily in the bleachers, and a few others were busy with their own training regimens off to the side of the track. Lucia was well enough aware of them despite not being able to fully hear them, but she kept her eyes downcast as she caught her breath and continued to circle around the track. Nobody interesting was around today. Plus, with her heart rate slowing she finally was able to think properly again. Her feet knew the track enough to continue walking for her as she wandered off into her own imagination. All was well and good until she heard a loud clank.
This shouldn't have been a big deal for Lucia. It was came from her right side, so it wasn't even completely audible to her. However, it was enough to knock Lucia back into reality. Her feet broke their rhythm on the track as they came back under conscious control. She lost her balance for just a moment but managed to only stumble a step forward before she brought herself to a complete stop. Looking in the direction the noise had come from, Lucia saw a student weapon with...a hatchet for a hand? By this point, Lucia knew she should have been comfortable around partial weapon forms, but even now they still made her a little queasy. How was that even supposed to work? The guy was laughing it off, though, like the mistake had been no big deal, like it hadn't reverberated through the entire area and completely threw her off track on whatever it was she had been thinking about. Lucia wasn't one for confrontation, but this guy was new and maybe he didn't fully understand what weapons were for or how to control his form or...or...or! With a deep breath, Lucia bucked up enough courage to march over to the boy...or young man. Wow, he towered over her, a fact she noticed immediately when she stopped in front of him. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea, but she was already there and the silence wasn't going to break itself and all she had to do was speak her mind then she could go. That was it.
“Please don't do that again it makes some of the students nervous since loud noises can be frightening to some of us and please be aware of your partial form and sorry for interrupting you I hope I'm not intruding I just wanted you to know that.” It all came out as a big run-on sentence in her soft voice, leaving her breathless and even more nervous than before. Her eyes remained downcast as she took a step away from the tall weapon in front of her. Words: 693 Tag: Nolan

Reaching up to wipe away a tear of laughter from his eye, Nolan faltered, realizing that he was attempting to do so with his hatchet hand. This only sent him into an even harder fit of hysterics, and he was grabbing his gut with his normal hand as he cackled wholeheartedly. “Hahaha, oh gosh…” He uttered once he could breathe again, finally beginning to calm down. Oh, how he loved to laugh; it was one of the many joys of life. Now he just needed to undo his partial transformation and get back to training.
Before he could even begin to focus on reverting back from his partial form, something out of the corner of his eye had caught Nolan’s attention. Turning his head, Nolan’s eyebrows shot up with interest as a very short blonde girl approached him from the running track, stopping to stand directly in front of him. He noticed how she refused to look up at him and instead her gaze was cast downward, which in combination with her soft voice and short height made it somewhat difficult for Nolan to understand what she was rambling on about. Leaning his head downward, he was able to get the general gist of it, at least.
“Oh, I’m sorry, love. I’ll make sure to keep it together, eh?” In all honesty, he found the girl rather adorable and not in the least bit intimidating, but he decided to humor her request. She seemed to be kind of shy, so going out of her way to be this assertive must’ve been a big social step for her; might as well show her that her efforts weren’t for not. His brow furrowed as he focused on his hand, watching it glow and revert back from steel to flesh and bone. Once the process was complete, Nolan grinned warmly at the other blonde. “There we go, I believe that’ll be better for weight tossing.” Wiping his hand on his pants to dry it of any sweat, without hesitation he held it out for the girl to shake; it was in his nature to be so forward and friendly like that. “I’m Nolan Anderson, a new student weapon here. And who might you be?”

Lucia was tensed and ready to run away like a startled deer if the boy in front of her made any sudden moves. Instead, he apologized for frightening her and reverted his hand back to its normal form. Lucia's eyes were still focused on the ground, but by the sound of his voice she could tell he had a big grin on his face. That was odd. She had half-expected an arrogant weapon to lecture her about doing things his way and that she wasn't his meister so she wasn't the boss of him and yadda yadda yadda. Not all weapons were like that, but the newer ones tended to be a little more untamed and surprisingly proud of their “uniqueness”. A few battles usually smacked some humility into them. At least, that's what Lucia's experience at Shibusen had taught her. This one, though, seemed to think a little differently. She still felt the horrible regret of her actions sinking in even as he continued talking at her, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. She would have felt even worse if he had yelled. Now that he was being nice, though, a new worry was nagging at her: she was going to have to talk to him more. It was formality, really, but she had fully expected to be running away with an embarrassed red face by now. Instead, his big hand was waiting in front of her for the proper social response. All she had to do was respond. Why was this so hard?
“I'm Lucia Rowe.” Her voice was a little louder now as she reached out her small hand to shake Nolan's. She took a moment to look up and up and up at him. Wow. She still couldn't get over how tall he was. Did giants really exist, or was she just too tiny? “I'm a meister...third year.” The last part took a moment to drop out of her mouth. It was kind of embarrassing that she had been partnerless for so long, but a wavelength like hers wasn't very compatible with a lot of the weapons that had shown up over time. That was just how things had worked out for her. “P...pleased to meet you.”

Lucia. A rather unusual name, but pretty nonetheless. He noted that she was speaking up a little louder now than before, a good sign that she was beginning to relax. When she grasped his hand to shake it, though, he could feel that she was still a little tense. Plus, gosh, she was small. His own hand dwarfed hers, and he wondered if it was uncomfortable for her to crane her head upwards to look him in the face. He was used to being taller and larger than most people, sure, but the sight of them standing so close together must’ve been verging on comical. Eyes twinkling merrily, he cracked a small joke to keep the mood light. “Don’t worry, I won’t crush you. I’m a gentle giant, I promise; though I have to say I wasn’t expecting to meet Thumbelina today. The pleasure’s all mine.”
A meister, eh? That he definitely did not expect. If anything he thought she would be a weapon, too. Just goes to show how you can’t judge a book by its cover; for all Nolan knew, this girl could flip him onto his ass in the blink of an eye. And she was a third-year student at that. Yeah, Nolan made a mental note never to spar with Lucia. Like, ever. He’s heard horror stories about girls being able to use the weight of large men to their advantage in combat, resulting in broken necks and other bodily appendages.
Something about the way she said “third year” caught Nolan’s attention. It wasn’t exactly a bitter tone she had said it in, but more of a “I’m not proud of this” kind of tone. Unbeknownst to Nolan, he was still holding Lucia’s hand, and around this time his thumb began to rub the back of her hand comfortingly. “I hope I’m not being too nosy…” He started, slightly tilting his head to the side. Hopefully prying a little bit wouldn’t drive Lucia away. “…But is there something about being a third-year student that I should be worried about in two years’ time?” Heck, this was a school filled with children who could turn into swords and other various deadly tools; maybe there was some crazy teacher that the third years had to learn under.

Lucia crack a small smile at Nolan's joke. Thumbelina was an odd way of putting her size, but next to him it was definitely an appropriate thing to say. At least he was being nice. He hadn't let go of her hand yet, though, even after the cordial handshake was supposed to be complete. Her eyes dropped back to their clasped hands. Well, mostly his hand; hers had disappeared within his grip. She didn't have long to contemplate it, though, as he was already moving on to his next question. Then she felt it: his thumb rubbing against her hand. Her face immediately turned red as she jerked her hand back and held it at her chest, covered protectively by the hand he hadn't touched.
“S-sorry about that. I didn't mean to be rude or anything,” she managed to mumble. Then she cleared her throat and continued, “Anyway, back to your question. There really isn't anything you should be worried about. Well, not you in particular since you're a weapon and you don't seem like the kind of person who would have too much trouble here and you'll fit in fine I mean you already seem quite popular with the other students so you shouldn't have any serious problems nothing to be worried about.” Shoot. There was the run-on sentence again. It was true, though. The admiring glances from the other students on the track had not gone unnoticed by Lucia. Still, she hadn't fully answered his question. She lowered her hands to her sides, took a deep breath, and tried again, “I'm just a little odd, is all. I've been her for awhile and still have yet to find a partner. I guess I'm just selective or hard to get along with or something but I...” Lucia stopped herself before she could begin wandering around with a run-on sentence again. What was with this guy? She hardly ever talked, and yet in these few minutes he had gotten her to say more words than she managed to squeak out in an entire day. Suddenly she found herself feeling really uncomfortable and exposed. This was too much for one person to know about her at one time. She had to leave. She had to get back to her dorm, lock the door, and hide in some drawings or something. This had been more than enough social contact for today.
“I'm sorry I've said too much I'm really sorry I should go you really didn't need to know that okay bye welcome to the academy and....uh. Bye.” Lucia let the words spill out of her mouth as she turned around to walk away. She wanted to run, but she was worried about how weird that would look. There was no need to give the other students any bad ideas about Nolan, not when he seemed like such a nice person. She just needed to walk away as if the conversation had ended like any other and they were just going their separate ways.

She smiled. Lucia actually smiled! Holy crap, Nolan had found someone who genuinely appreciated one of his jokes. This alone was enough to further improve his already good mood. His brain then began to create imaginary scenarios in which he would give the perfectly executed joke, getting Lucia to actually laugh out loud. He also wondered what her laugh would sound like; bells, maybe? Or maybe a surprising chortle? Either would be just awesome; he wouldn’t be surprised if he got crowned the King of Comedy if that ever happened.
His mental fantasy was cut short when Lucia jerked her hand away from his, blushing furiously and yet apologizing for some reason. Oh, he had been holding her hand this whole time. Talk about awkward; smooth, Nolan. His cheeks dusted rosy with a small blush of his own, Nolan shrugged, his trademark grin still present. “No, sorry, it was my bad…you’re fine.” Stupid wandering hands and their touchy-feeliness. One would think Nolan was neglected as a child and thus he sought out human physical contact to compensate for the fact. But alas that was not the case; he was just super affectionate, and he embraced that about himself…usually.
And then Lucia began to ramble. Nolan covered his mouth with his hand to keep himself from giggling; she was an oddball, that’s for sure, but Nolan liked quirky people. Plus Lucia was opening up a lot more than he at first thought she would. “Popular? Well, I wouldn’t say that…” Okay so modesty aside, Nolan truly did notice his budding popularity with the other students. He was the new kid, the eighteen-year-old freshman stud from Canada; it was only natural in a school full of hormonal teenagers that he would become the “new shiny thing”. But it would all pass over soon enough.
“Now, hold on a sec…” Nolan began, noticing how Lucia was starting to self-depreciate herself. The blonde girl had cut herself off mid-sentence, and Nolan could visibly see her closing herself off from him. “We’re getting along just fine, aren’t we?” He retorted, trying to keep her thinking positively. What on Earth had happened to Lucia to make her so antisocial? Of course it could just be the way she is, which would be fine, but he doubted that someone with her levels of social anxieties had many friends. And he wasn’t about to let her run away from the possibility of them becoming friends today. “Uh, wait!” He called out as she began to walk away, reaching to grab her wrist gently but firmly. His mind raced to come up with some sort of excuse to convince her to stay a little longer. “We, uhm, we can…oh!” Remembering what she said about not having a weapon partner yet, he decided that saying something about it would be as good an idea as any. “How about you try giving me a go as your weapon, eh? Just for practice?” He released his grip on her wrist to strike a comical hero-like pose. "Who knows? Maybe I'm the next death scythe to be!" In all honesty, Nolan wasn't expecting much result, seeing as he was so new to this whole meister-weapon thing. But how could just a little fun hurt?

Lucia felt like an idiot. She never should have confronted Nolan. Never. She had just made a complete and utter fool of herself. His protests weren't registered while she walked away. All she could think of was how utterly stupid she had been. Wow he probably thinks I'm some kind of freak. Man I messed up this time how does that even happen he was so nice and everything and just ugh I can't believe this I'm going to have to avoid him in the halls not that that'll be difficult or anything just wow this is really -
Her internal rambling was cut off by Nolan grabbing her wrist. Her fist instinctively clenched and her entire body tensed. She wanted to jerk him forward, flip him over and slam him into the ground like she had been taught in training, but she held back. Nolan wasn't a monster – he was just new. He probably didn't understand how such a move could make her react. She never liked surprises, and that had definitely come as a surprise.
Lucia turned slowly to face Nolan as he continued to speak, but her fists were still clenched. Even when he let go of her, every fiber of her being was still tense. What was he planning? What was this giant going to do next? He was chock full of everything Lucia wasn't, and suddenly it was grating on her nerves. All I wanted to do was make my exit with what little shreds of dignity I had left, and you wouldn't let me! Can't you see I just want to go away and never, ever let you see me act like a fool again?! Her expression remained completely blank despite her angered thoughts, but she doubted he could see it since she was staring at the ground again.
His idea made her frantic thoughts pause for a moment. Was he crazy? There was no way their wavelengths would be compatible. They could barely hold a stable conversation. What made him think she could even hold his weapon form? Still, the idea was just so stupid that it made everything else pale in comparison. It was a new kid kind of thing she had seen before: partnering up just for the heck of it all instead of really thinking a partnership through. She could humor him on this one, if only to prove her status.
“Okay, fine,” she said as she finally looked up and up at him again. “Just don't start crying when it doesn't work out.” With that, she held her hand out to catch his weapon form and waited for him to start his transformation. This was going to be quick.

Nolan could feel Lucia tensing up beneath his grip on her wrist, and he immediately regretted that decision. He hadn’t exactly thought the whole physical contact thing through…again. This was getting out of hand, he needed to stop being so ditsy about that. Luckily she didn’t lash out in defense from his actions and instead slowly turned to face him. Her fists were clenched; wonderful job, Nolan. You managed to piss her off! At the moment Nolan was mentally facepalming. He thought that he was making good headway with Lucia at first, but now he wasn’t so sure. She was back to staring at the ground again instead of looking at him; so in other words, back to square one. Well, if Nolan’s original plan of action had failed, might as well try a different approach, right?
Lucia looked back up at him once she finally gave her response, and ouch, Nolan didn’t expect the sass that was dished out at him. “…I somehow doubt that I would be the one to cry,” He responded curtly, giving the girl a pitying look. He wondered if she was the kind of person to get upset from somebody showing them pity; if so, then maybe he could get her to open up in a completely different way. She did seem to be harboring a bunch of different emotions; if prodding her with a sharp stick while she was ticked off is what it would take to get her to vent out her worries somehow, then Nolan would do that, even if it meant him getting a few bruises in the process. Some friendships come easier than others, and he could already tell that this one was not going to be easy to form.
Sighing, Nolan relaxed his mind and body, focusing on the mental image of himself becoming his weapon form. His body glowed and became a white energy that spiraled through the air and hovered above Lucia’s waiting hand. The energy then expanded and took the shape of a hatchet, and upon completion he felt himself being caught by the other blonde, her hand grasping the hatchet’s handle. Being in full weapon form was still a strange feeling for Nolan. It was as if he was in a dark room and looking out at the world through a window; he could still hear and see things, but it was all muffled.
This time was a little bit different, though. He had never been held by another person while a hatchet; most of the time he would accidentally transform completely when meaning to just pull off a partial transformation. Now the theoretical room felt like it had another presence besides Nolan. It wasn’t exactly another person, but more like…like the essence of a being. And it had a magnetic effect on Nolan, pulling his attention away from the outside world and towards the essence. He found himself reaching out to the essence with his mind, focusing more and more of his attention on it…
Suddenly Nolan felt himself being plunged into a sea of emotions and feelings. He felt regret, anger, confusion and self-hatred spreading throughout his chest, and it was all very overwhelming. Gasping, he twitched slightly in Lucia’s hand. Was…was this Lucia he was feeling? He had been learning about soul resonance between weapon and meister in class, but they had only just started on the topic so he didn’t know much about the process. His initial instinct in this situation was to reject these emotions, to push them away and out of the dark room. But after quickly steeling himself, Nolan instead embraced the emotions, feeling them course through his mind in full force. In all honesty it was rather painful for him to endure, and he could feel the metal of his weapon body quake slightly from the effort.
In response to the negative emotions spiraling between Lucia and him, Nolan introduced calm and understanding into the cracks that appeared between the anger and regret. He then smoothed them over with happy thoughts and encouragement; he could feel how she was reluctant to try this little exercise with him, and how she wanted to just run away from the situation altogether. “It’s okay to feel that way, love,” He began, still curving his positivity around and inside the connection he was having with Lucia. “But you can see now, can’t you? That I don’t think any less of you than I did before?” He hoped that somehow, she could sense his sincerity as he spoke. He noticed that his voice had echoed almost as if he were talking into an aluminum can, and also that the initial pain from Lucia’s presence was beginning to fade.

Oh no, he was serious about this. Lucia had expected hesitation, but as soon as she saw the lights she knew there was no turning back. Nolan was definitely serious. Her arm tensed in preparation for the inevitable: the weapon form was going to be too heavy or too hot or something and she was going to drop it and it would all be over. Simple, but embarrassing nonetheless. There was a split second where the hatchet was suspended in the air, then it dropped into her outstretched palm. Her fingers wrapped around the handle, but it felt normal to her. Actually, it felt better than normal. No weapon had felt like this before, so why this one? Suddenly, she felt overwhelmed with emotion, both her own and what she assumed to be Nolan's. Sensitivity and joy, calm and understanding. She had those, certainly, but they weren't as bright as Nolan's, and now they seemed to be overflowing from his weapon form. The shock of it all was too much for her to handle. She dropped to her knees, the tip of the hatchet burying itself in the ground in front of her.
This has to be some kind of joke. The first tears were welling up in Lucia's eyes. All this time I've been waiting, preparing, training, and this is how it happens? Lucia felt the tears begin to flow down her cheeks as she listened to Nolan's metallic voice. She had never opened up to anyone before, not like this, and now this stranger already knew so much about who she was without even getting her to talk. So that's what it meant to have a compatible wavelength. She sniffled a little as she used her sleeve to dry the tears from her face, letting go of Nolan's weapon form in the process. Even though the connection stopped, Lucia was still very aware of Nolan's presence. Her Soul Perception blinked on for a few seconds, just long enough to see how bright Nolan's soul was, then it was gone.
“I'm sorry,” she said as she wiped more tears from her face. “I just wasn't expecting this. I'm really sorry for being so rude and quiet and I didn't know and-” She took a deep breath and pushed Nolan's weapon form a little further away from her on the grass so he would have space to change back. “We need to report this,” she finally said. “We've got a lot of work ahead of us.”

By now the majority of the pain and overstimulation had dulled to the point that it was just barely noticeable. So Nolan was in fact wavelength compatible with Lucia? Wow, that was a coincidence, this being his first time trying to partner with a meister and all. Not that he was complaining; it felt nice to share this bond with her. It wasn’t exactly that the dark room was lonely beforehand…no, it wasn’t that. It was more like now, it felt not lonely, as if he didn’t know what the room was missing beforehand. But now there was Lucia’s presence and it somehow felt strangely complete. He smiled as he felt Lucia finally let go of her previous resistances, and a brief moment of worry crossed his mind when she dropped to the ground, tears coursing down her cheeks. The good thing was that they weren’t sad tears but rather emotional tears, so Nolan waited patiently for Lucia to collect herself.
A few moments later and he felt her release her grip on him, her presence leaving the room. However, he could still sense her soul despite not being in contact with the other blonde. She pushed him across the grass a bit and he took that as a signal to transform back to normal. Focusing, he felt his metal body glow and reshape itself back into his human form. Sighing, he opened his eyes and grinned at the teary girl before him. “Well that was new,” He commented after she had spoken, chuckling a bit to himself. In all honesty he was thrilled to have found his meister partner already. “I guess we should make this an official partnership.” Standing up from the ground to stretch briefly, he then bent over and offered his hand once again to Lucia, but this time with the intention of helping her to her feet. “No time to waste, eh?”

Lucia took a few deep breaths to calm herself down. In. Out. In. Out. Her eyes were facing downward, but she still caught the light of Nolan transforming out of his weapon form. She could feel his shadow towering over her, and for a second she felt an onslaught of fear. He barely even knew her, and she barely even knew him. She didn't suspect him of anything detrimental to their partnership – he was just too darn peppy and outgoing and cheerful and whatever. But her. He didn't know anything about her. Was that why he had worked? Or maybe he knew too much now. The emotional link their wavelengths had created might have told him everything. In that case, there wasn't a single thing to worry about. But still, this was a matter of trust. Would he still work even if he knew what her goals were? Who she was a where she came from?
Lucia's mind ran in circles with her thoughts until Nolan's voice managed to break through. She looked up to see him with a hand outstretched to help her up. It was now or never. Trust him and take his hand, or stand up on her own and walk away. Could she even do this? It wasn't like she was trained for a hatchet. She would have to change her tactics and train even more and talk to Nolan more and it was just so overwhelming. It certainly wasn't what she expected when she took the bold step to confront him just a few minutes ago. The doubt in her made one final push before she decided to take one last deep breath, look Nolan in the eyes, and take his hand. This was it. This was what she had been waiting for. Now she could move forward. She let Nolan lift her to her feet, but she didn't let go. His presence seemed to have a very calming effect on her now that she was standing up and looking forward instead of at the ground. Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing after all.
“Let's go.”
