As he looked down at his new partner - his new partner!! He felt excited just thinking about it -
His train of thought by Arlie hanging off of him in excitement. Nathaniel laughed, returning the hug (bending down so she could reach), he smiled at her words. "I don't doubt it," Nate agreed. "I'll try to be the best Meister ever, too!" He added. Arlie was so...cute! Her happy attitude was infectious. He could tell it was going to be a good time, hanging with her.
Unlike Arlie, who was a ball of sunshine from the whole thing, Nathaniel suddenly got a strange surge of worry. Could he keep himself and his Weapon safe? Arlie was experienced with guns, and probably had been here long enough to go through some basic training. She was so eager to please - while Nathaniel wasn't afraid of Kishin Eggs or missions or a number of things, he was nervous about not being able to protect someone. He shoved the feelings down, feeling guilty. This wasn't the time to dwell on the hard stuff! There'd be plenty of time for that later. For now, it was a happy moment. He had a Weapon!
Arlie pulled away from the hug, and he saw her wobble, but she righted herself like a pro.
"Well, because we're now formally partners..." Nathaniel stuck out his hand to shake. "Hello. My name's Nathaniel Zsoldos, from Freemont, Washington. I don't like candy but I do like southern comfort food. I'll be your Meister - nice to meet you!" It felt a little dorky, but if they were to fight together, he thought it might be a good idea to get to know one another a little more.

It hadn’t occurred to Arlie that Nate may not have been the hugging type, but since he returned the gesture she assumed all was well. Besides, he was smiling so there couldn’t possibly be anything wrong. Arlie was a ball of energy. Her mind was racing with all the amazing things that would take place now. They could go on missions! They could fight evil and become stronger, they could train together, and they would always have someone to sit next to during class and lunchtime! The blonde couldn’t stop smiling; the grin on her face was such that her cheeks were beginning to hurt even. She was just so happy!
It was all Arlie could do to keep from bouncing up and down with joy. As Nate offered her his hand and a more in depth introduction, Arlie giggled before shaking his hand to a degree where it was a wonder that it wouldn’t possibly fall off,
“Howdy! My name’s Arlie Davis! I’m from Fort Worth, Texas, and if you like southern comfort food, then so help me I’ll be happy to make you more than you can eat! I’ll have the pleasure o’ bein’ yer Weapon! I’m so happy to meetcha; I think I just might faint!”
There were a million questions circling around and around in Arlie’s head. What was Nate’s favorite food? Did he like guns? Had he ever ridden a horse? What was his family like? How did he get his hair so spiky? Arlie didn’t know what to ask first, nor did she know what could possibly be off limits, so the blonde simply stood still holding onto Nate’s hand beaming up at her new Meister, her Meister! It was so wonderful to be able to think that, to say that! Another thought rocketed through her mind and an idea burst forth from it, one that made Arlie blink and then smile brightly as she had been,
“I’ve got an idea!”
Still holding onto Nate’s hand, Arlie sort of dragged pulled him along gently off the walkway and onto the grass, awkwardly stepping along on her skates before releasing him and flopping down on the green of the ground,
“Since we’re partners n’ all now, how ‘bout we do somethin’ like twenty questions? Y’know, to git to know each other!”

Stooping once more to pick up his jacket (it had fallen when Arlie had transformed and he had all but forgotten it), Nathaniel made is way over to Arlie and sat down next to her. "You mean like...I ask you a question, you ask me a question?" It was a good idea. Nathaniel stretched his long legs out in front of him and exhaled happily.
What a good day for casual questions, though! Now that he was sitting in the shade and not in the way of the scorching sunbeams, Nathaniel could focus on how nice it really was. He had almost forgotten the state of the temperature all the excitement! But the breeze was cooling down, and the leaves in the tree above Nate and Arlie made soft whispery noises as the wind blew through them. Nathaniel took a second to unlace his boots and pull them off, his socks soon following. "Sorry if feet gross you out," he said, "but it's not really a shoe kind of day! Too hot. Oh, if you want, I can ask a question or two first."
Nathaniel wracked his brain for a couple of moments, trying to think of something good to ask. His memory sparked. "You said you had brothers, right? What're they like? Family story time," he grinned, crossing his legs and putting his hands on his knees like it was story time in kindergarten. "And you said something about their weapon forms?" Nathaniel wondered what kind of weapons they would be, if Arlie was so hung up about the cool factor. He was ready to assure her that hers was cooler, no matter what they were - because hers was! Even if her father was a, a Demon Dinosaur Rocket Launcher Gun Pool Cue or something.

Arlie nodded at Nate’s description,
“Yup, that’s exactly what I mean!”
This would be a fun and easy way to learn about each other. For one Arlie had oodles of questions zipping around in her mind, plus she was sure that her new partner would want to know things about her other than her name and that she was a ball of sunshine and rainbows in the form of a teenage girl. Having plopped down beneath the shade already, Arlie let herself fall completely back onto the grass, looking up at the sun glittering down through the branches. Golly if it wasn’t just a perfect weather kinda day! The blonde chuckled at Nate, waving his concerns away with a hand,
“Dun worry ‘bout it, sugar, I’d take my skates off if I didn’t like the weight so much.”
She couldn’t really explain what she meant by that if she’d tried. Just the weight of the metal plate and the wheels made her feel more comfortable somehow, like she was more grounded. It was an odd thing to be comforted by she supposed, but Arlie had been skating for so long it was more strange for her to just walk around in normal shoes in her mind. Well, that and the fact that she also only ever wore cowboy boots but that was beside the point.
Arlie propped herself up on her elbows at Nate’s questions. Where to begin and how to put things was where she had trouble, so the blonde paused for a moment. Blinking up at the leaves above their head, Arlie put the words and details together in her head first before speaking to make sure everything would make sense and also hopefully not overwhelm the gentle giant,
“Boy howdy, do I ever have brothers! Well first there’s Austin, he’s the oldest. He taught me how to ride horses and helped me on my skates back when I was just knee-high to a grasshopper. He’s a real sweetheart! Next there’s Bentley. He’s a bit of a shy guy, but he opens up pretty quick once you get to talkin’ to ‘im. Sharp as a tack that one, I swear he’s got books fer brains! The twins, Darren n’ Dexter, are after him. Couple o’ tricksters, them. I can’t count the number o’ times they’ve gotten me with toothpaste Oreos. They put Nair in our daddy’s once! Mama damn near skinned ‘em alive for it. They’re here at Shibusen with me actually! They’re Demon Uzis!”
The blonde paused, but only for a moment. Getting Arlie to quit talking too much was like telling a river to flow in the opposite direction. It just didn’t happen,
“I come in as the fifth kid, then there’s the lil’ ones! Jack’s only two years younger than me but he’s got all the girls goin’ after him already! He was learnin’ to skateboard when I left, but for the most part it’s just a lot o’ scraped knees and bumps on the head for ‘im so far. He’s awful protective of me, but I ‘spose it’s partly outta guilt. Colby’s the youngest n’ acts it. He’s a big ol’ cry baby, but we love ‘im for it anyways. He’s real sensitive, bawls at every lil’ thing that goes wrong. He’s a cutie though, and it’s pretty easy to get a smile back on his face!”
Taking another breath, Arlie launched right back into it with Weapon forms,
“Well, Darren n’ Dexter are both Demon Uzis like I said. My daddy, though, he’s a Demon Submachine Gun. It don’t get much more badass than that!”
There was a joyful glint in the grey of Arlie’s eye when she spoke about her family. They were precious to her after all, and she did miss the ones that weren’t currently nearby. Darren and Dexter may have only been a hop, skip, and a jump away but she tried not to bug them too much with her homesickness. Besides ,they usually hung out a little at lunch just to make sure they were all caught up with what they were all doing as far as school went. At least done for a moment, Arlie rattled off two of her own questions,
“What about you? Do you have any siblings? Oh, oh, oh, and what’s yer absolute favorite food?”[/color]

Wow! Arlie had a huge family - then again, they do say everything's bigger in Texas. Six siblings! Nathaniel couldn't even imagine. He tried to picture living with six sisters like Angie, and balked. Better to just have one energetic little sister like her, he thought privately. He did love his sister to death, but one was more than enough.
In any case, his Weapon seemed extremely happy to talk about her family. He silently congratulated himself on the good question, although Arlie seemed like the kind of person that could talk happily and at length on any subject at all. She barely paused for breath! Nathaniel was impressed. There didn't seem to be any break in her recollections, so he sat back and listened. He was glad to do so - Arlie's enthusiasm and accent made her fun to listen to.
Arlie had seemed like she was on a roll, so it was a bit out of the blue when she finished her breath with two of her own questions. Nathaniel took a moment to adjust to the change, but gave her a genuine smile. "Well, I'll have to remember all your brother's names. If we're partners, we're gonna have to meet each other's family at some point. You'd like my little sister - Angelica - she's seven years old, and my only sibling, but we're really good friends. She's kind of a prankster too, but not as bad as your brothers," he laughed. "She's like, little kid stuff. Hiding my books, that sort of thing. Angie thinks she's being sneaky when she asks to watch a movie, but then she'll pull out some kid cartoon and be like, 'Fooled you! We're gonna watch this!'" Nathaniel tried his best to imitate her high pitched exited voice, but it sounded hollow. He dropped the impression and continued. "She's cute. I don't think she has any Demon Weapon or Meister tendancies, but my parents'll watch her. Maybe someday your littlest brother and my sister will be at Shibusen together," he said.
Remembering that Arlie had also asked about his favorite food, he added, "And my favorite food is, um... God, that's hard. I really like pasta. And burgers. You know, comfort food." He uncrossed his legs. "Okay, your turn! Three places you want to visit before you die," he asked.

Oh goodness, Nathan was right! If they were partners they would almost certainly be meeting each other’s families at some point in time. Granted he could technically meet Darren and Dexter any time he wanted since they were at Shibusen as well, but Arlie thought it best to wait a little bit. Didn’t want to overwhelm him, although her family in general could be a bit overwhelming for most. It was Arlie times eight if you included her parents, although Bentley at least was a bit more demure than the others, as was Colby. Still, the thought that some sort of giant family meeting would eventually happen was exciting enough for Arlie to attempt kicking her feet, although the weight of the skates made her stop very quickly after she’d started.
Ah, he had a little sister! Angelica, what a cute name! Oh of course she sounded absolutely adorable. Gosh, he was so lucky, getting to have a sister! Arlie had to admit, she was jealous. She and her mother were the only girls in the house, after all, and that wasn’t quite the same as having a little sister to pal around with even if she and her mother were close,
“Aw, Nathan, she sounds precious as a south sea pearl!”
Gosh, if she ever had the pleasure of meeting little Angie, the Texan was going to spoil her rotten. She only hoped Nathan and his parents wouldn’t mind too much! Oh wait; it was her turn for answers huh? It was an unexpected question, one that Arlie hadn’t really thought about all that much. Lying back in the grass, the blonde screwed up her face into one of thought before answering,
“I’ve always wanted to go to Savannah! In Georgia, I mean, not Africa. That’s a bit far fer me. It’s supposed to be just gorgeous! Plus my mama’s got family from there, so the chance of us all goin’ at some point are pretty high.”
Propping herself up on her elbows again, Arlie had to think another moment. Travel wasn’t her strong suit. The furthest she’d been away from home yet as Death City, and she’d never been further east than the Mississippi River that one summer she’d spent with some cousins. Thinking a bit longer on it, another place came to mind and she grinned,
“I’d love to make it to Hawaii someday too! All o’ those beaches, I’d like nothing better to run around in a bikini and swim the day away or learn to surf or somethin’! Plus it’s just a pretty place to be.”
The last potential destination was easy, Arlie looking at Nathan and smiling brightly,
“I’d like to see where you’re from, too! Seattle sounds like fun! Plus it’d be nice to see where you grew up n’ whatnot, bein’ my partner n’ all.”
With that, it was time for her to think of more questions! Pondering for a moment, Arlie thought of a good one,
“Oh, oh, what’re yer three favorite bands? Singers count too.”

His shirt was sticking to his back, and the air felt still and humid. Nathaniel slid his hand around the back of his neck and down the side, unsure how to broach the subject of maybe going and getting a smoothie. It was far too hot for him out here, but he grinned and bore it for the time being.
"You'll like Seattle," he promised. "It's got more hills than I've got piercings but it's a perfect city for coffee and just - hanging out, I suppose." He gave Arlie a bright smile, although it faltered when he noticed the sun. What are you laughing at? He thought. It was too hot for jokes.
But he pushed his heat woes to the side and tried to think of bands he liked. "I don't know," he said, finally, after a long moment of deliberation. "I don't really listen to that much music," he admitted, shamefaced. "I usually just turn on the radio and listen to whatever station's on." He scratched the back of his head. "I'm not that picky!" It was true - suprising to most people, Nathaniel had no true music genre of preference. His mother was really into Jazz Instrumental and Classical music, things that had no lyrics for easy listening, and his father was a big R&B fan. His sister listened to the Top 40 and Disney music, so it wasn't a stretch to say his family's taste was varied. The radio had become a war zone - a battle that Nathaniel had no interest in fighting! He generally let the others duke it out (his mother or sister usually won), and he related this to Arlie quickly so she understood it was just easier to have no preference in such a stubborn music environment.
Searching his (now limited) question bank for something else to ask Arlie, he again thought how hot he was. Giving Arlie a bashful look, he asked, "Do you want to go get a soda or something? I'm not used to this heat and I guess I didn't really dress for it! My treat," he added, "Since I'm the one who's relocating us, I guess."

When he put it that way, Seattle sounded even more fun! If it really did have that many piercings, Arlie could imagine it had to be the best place ever for roller skating! Well okay, maybe for going down the hills. Going back up was always a bit of work, but it was worth it to go dashing back down again! Only if it was safe, though, since it wouldn’t be too good to go speeding downhill and run smack into a car. Thoughts of terrible motor vehicle aside, Nate was talking again!
For some reason it struck Arlie as odd that Nate apparently didn’t listen to too much music. Granted Arlie wasn’t exactly one to constantly have her earbuds in, but she still liked to turn on her favorite radio station and jam out whenever she was cooking. Still, for some reason she could just see Nate totally rocking out, but maybe it was the punk rock look he had to him. Yeah, that was probably it. Still, it was nice that he at least wasn’t picky! Arlie knew she was, granted she didn’t listen to much else that wasn’t Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, or Keith Urban, but she was from Texas.
Arlie could tell from the little signs Nate had been giving off earlier that the heat really wasn’t something he was used to yet. Poor thing, or course she’d go with him someplace out of the sun! The blonde rolled her eyes and shook her head,
“Like you gotta ask. Come on; let’s git you outta here before you melt! I could go fer some hydration myself after all that skatin’ ‘round I did.”
Arlie was up on her feet in an instant, wobbling a bit before spinning back around to bend down and offer her hand to her new partner. This day had certainly turned out to be a pleasant one! The bright smile on her face that she gave to Nate was a clear indication of that.

Nathaniel returned his Weapon's sunny smile, grabbing her hand and pulling himself up, careful not to take her down with the force (she was on skates, after all). He flipped his coat over his shoulder once again, one hand holding it loosely, other hand in his front pants pocket.
He could feel the directions in his pocket, the ones that had been too vague to decipher, and his hand closed around the small piece of paper. Perhaps it had been fate that he had gotten lost, or a pure accident. Either way, he was content. Not only had he made a new friend, he had gained a partner. He wondered what would happen next. The prospect was exciting, to say the least. He'd have to call Angie later and tell her all about it. Just wait until she heard that his Weapon was pretty much a bonafide cowgirl! Nathaniel vaguely wondered if Arlie knew any songs like "Home on the Range." That is, stereotypical cattle driving songs. Then again, she said her mother was a taxidermist, so he guessed all the cattle she was used to were probably, well, stuffed. Or on a plate. As a hamburger. Hamburgers sounded good.
"Know any good places for a hamburger?" He said as he began walking, his train of thought making him hungry. "I mean, if we're gonna get hydration we might as well eat too!" Nathaniel stopped walking for a moment, looking around the park. "Wait, first, before we go, do you know how to get back to the dorms? I'm pretty much lost," he admitted. "You may have to show me around the city a bit. Sorry in advance!" he laughed. "I actually only got to the park at all because I got lost looking for something else."
Not that he minded - the happy look on his face was proof of that. In fact, getting lost was probably the best thing that had happened to him since he had arrived at Shibusen. He had been homesick and, frankly, lonely, but the friends he had made - especially Arlie - was a good indication that his life was soon to be full of excitement from now on, for better or worse!

Psh, did Arlie know a good place for hamburgers. Please, that was one of the first things she looked into after arriving in Death City! Arlie was from Texas which had some of the best beef around which meant that the blonde was relentlessly picky about things like hamburgers. Luckily, her search had been fruitful. Grinning, Arlie nodded, the movement making the curls of her ponytail bounce jauntily. Arlie would happily help him back to the dorms as well, of course. The boys’ dorms weren’t too far off from the girls’ after all, so she’d need to pass near them anyways. Arlie giggled and waved away his concerns,
“Don’t you worry yer spiky lil’ head, honeybunch, I’ll show yah ‘round!”
Looking up at him, she gave him a wink,
“I gotta say, though, I sure am glad you got lost!”
She couldn’t have grinned brighter if she’ tried. The blonde was over the moon. She had a partner! At last! Granted she hadn’t been in the city that long, but it had still been a week or two at least. She’d gotten lost plenty of times herself, leading to all sorts of lovely little adventures, but she had a pretty good handle on the city now! Glancing around, Arlie put her hands on her hips, skating a circle around Nate this way and that before deciding on a direction and pointing as she smiled over her shoulder at him,
“That way’ll be the quickest!”
Arlie spun back around, arms out like an airplane for a few moments before returning to Nate’s side and offering him her arm like the trek to the dorms and possibly hydration and hamburgers was some sort of formal event,
“Shall we, partner?”
The look on Arlie’s face was one of pure excitement and joy. Her smile was bright and her eyes shone with happiness. It was a wonder the blonde didn’t just burst into a cloud of rainbows, glitter, and warm fuzzy feelings since that appeared to be all she was made out of.

Nathaniel laughed. "I should get lost more often!" He took his hand out of his pocket and accepted her proffered arm and, bobbing in a slight curtsy, responded, "Let's go!" happily. He made sure to walk slow, because even if Arlie had on her roller skates, his legs were most definitely longer. He had to bend down slightly to his side to be able to hold her arm, but it wasn't something he minded much at all. It was endearing how she was treating hamburgers as a big deal - then again, it kind of was. Nathaniel loved hamburgers and considered them one of the best food groups around. People had told him that hamburgers weren't really a food group, but he cheerfully ignored them. People who were snarky about the particulars of food were best left alone.
Suddenly overcome with glee, Nathaniel leaned over to address an elderly woman walking by. "Hey, ma'am, this is my Demon Weapon!" He said proudly. The woman mumbled a "that's nice" before scuttling away, giving him a fond look and shaking her head. Oh, to be young. Nathaniel didn't see her do this, though, and was focused on how great the day had turned out. He turned to Arlie and beamed. How lucky was he? Arlie was really nice and even if she didn't know much about geography, he could tell she would make a great partner - he hoped he could live up to it. If anything else, he was determined to protect that smile of hers.
"Kid, I think this could be the start of a beautiful friendship," he said. He couldn't remember where the line was from, but in that moment, it sounded good, and that was all that mattered.
