This was ridiculous.
Nila stood at the base of the Shibusen steps, staring down the street with a bored expression. She’d been watching the heat rise from the sidewalk for that past several minutes. With her hands shoved in her pockets and her back straight as a cliff, she wasn’t the most approachable figure. The tight ponytail Nila had restrained the abundance of dark brown curls atop her head witch didn’t help either. Her gaze was as cold as the icy color it held. It was a wonder a sheet of ice didn’t form underneath her. Perhaps it was the Nevada heat. The sun beat down Death City as always, but Nila was dressed for it. But then she also looked dressed for heat and a fight, much of her dark skin left exposed in only a crop top and capri sweats.
Her hands were wrapped.
The thought that they would want to discourage her was preposterous. Why should she be discouraged? She had busted her ass to climb the kickboxing ladder. Being a young lady in a sport predominantly conquered by men meant she’d had to work twice as hard, and she was still young. She was undefeated in her age class. She scared the other teenagers at the gym. She tore up boxing gloves like cats tore up houseplants, and she had more than enough healed broken bones and some recent bruises to prove she’d earned her place in the ring.
Nila didn’t understand why a couple of Shibusen students shouldn’t be just as intimidated by her as most everyone else was that she’d gone up against or was set to go up again. She tore through weight lifting exercises and ran circles around the neighborhood no problem. They trained just like she did, so why wouldn’t she be able to take a few of them on? It made sense, and from what she’d heard the lower classes were individuals she could most definitely handle. Nila almost felt sorry for them, having to go up against her. A couple of students with less training than the others couldn’t possibly stand a chance. This was more likely to be a warm-up than an actual fight, at least to her.
She stood up a bit straighter, removed her hands from her pockets to place them on her hips. Nila tilted her head up to gaze at the clear blue sky. A smirk that was perhaps a bit too cocky tugged at her lips.
Maybe she’d be merciful and go easy on them.

Rhett’s emotions were a mix of great excitement and horrifying fear. After counting the steps that led to Shibusen he and Lior only had to complete two more missions before they could ascend into the one star class. As much as Rhett wanted to be a one star the combat aspect still worried him. Their mission today involved potential combat and that had him concerned. Obviously they would need to be able to fight things stronger than this to be one stars but the experience was still something new, and as such worrisome. Rhett hated not being able to think out potential options for a situation.
Regardless he couldn’t let that get to him! They needed to do this is they wanted to be one stars so they would do this! To get in the proper mindset for combat Rhett had shed his usual outfit for something more practical. Simple sneakers and a pair of black jeans were perfect for potential combat. A black t-shirt completed the outfit with the burning symbol of the great team Dai-Gurren to keep him in the proper mindset. Making sure his inhaler was ready if he needed it he stuffed it in his pocket and was ready for the mission!
Walking toward the school Rhett saw the stairs he had previously counted and headed there to wait for Lior. Standing at the base of the stairs he looked around and noticed one person who seemed out of place. The girl was just standing and looking up at the school while people went by. Thinking about it for a moment he didn’t recognize her face so she was either new or the traitor. Based on how she was standing it seemed more likely that she was the traitor. She even had her hands wrapped to support his theory.
Deciding not to approach her until Lior showed up Rhett simply stood a distance away and watched. She could challenge anyone but it was their job to take care of her. Taking a deep breath he relaxed as best he could in preparation. Maybe they could get out of it without a fight? They had the chance to so there was hope. But if it did come down to a fight they had to win, it was the only way they could justifiably move into the one star class. They would do this and become actual heroes!

This would be interesting. Lior was glad to a point to be taking on a more serious mission. Raccoons and frightened children were difficult in their own way, and she supposed they had been a good practice of patience and cleverness. The steps had counted as extra physical training, but they always provided that every time she made her way to and from school. This mission could potentially involve cleverness, physical ability, or possibly even both, the potential of which had her equally eager but also nervous. A certain amount of finesse would be required; she just wasn’t sure which kind yet. It would be interesting if the encounter did end up in a fight, but the way to do it was tricky. It was a match set up to deter, not to injure if at all possible. She didn’t want to have to Rhett’s screw form if she didn’t have to, but this girl was supposedly a skilled fighter. Lior had her own set of skills in that area, but she’d yet to use them in an actual fight. Previously she’d only used them on her instructor, and she long had wondered if he hadn’t gone easy on her. But she could worry about that once she got there. She and Rhett could try and drill reason into this apparently thick-skulled young woman, but if it came to a fight then so be it. Lior spotted the stairs and spotted her partner first. Only as she drew closer did she spy who she assumed they would be facing given the hard look and wrapped hands. Seems she was already prepared to fight. If that was her way of negotiating then maybe Lior had been wise in dressing more appropriately for such a thing. She wandered to Rhett, parasol held over one shoulder and giving him a smile, “Good morning Rhett.”They stood a fair distance from their challenger. She certainly looked like a mean one, and strong. Lior looked her over from a distance. Considering the difference between kickboxing and Krav Maga… No, she could think about that if it came to that. For the moment she hoped they could use words. Sighing lightly, she glanced to Rhett and spoke softly as not to alert the girl to their presence yet. “Just looking at her she does not look like the talking type, though I do believe we should still try that first if you have any ideas on where to start.” Lior had no clue how to begin on that front aside from telling her it was a terrible idea and to quit the match, but she doubted that would work. Lhe turned her head to look at her partner, appearing nervous but with an off sense of conviction to it. It was a strange feeling, but she sounded more serious, more determined than she had in previous mission. “If she insists on fighting…would you be opposed to me fighting her one-on-one?” She glanced towards the ground, back to their challenger, and finally back to Rhett. “I don’t want to use your Weapon form on her if we don’t have to.”

Keeping an eye on the girl Rhett made sure to watch and see if she did anything that might give away a weakness. Unfortunately all she did was stand and look at the school so there was nothing to be gained. It was a shame, if she had displayed any exploitable weakness maybe they could more easily beat her or prevent any violence from happening in the first place. She didn’t seem excessively threatening though so there was hope things would end well. He didn’t know any personally but from what he had seen around a one star would probably be able to easily beat her, so they would just have to manage.
While looking for something to use against the girl Lior showed up and walked over to him. Facing her he returned the smile and a ”Good morning.” before returning his attention to the girl. Lior seemed to have picked out the girl as well, she did look pretty obvious. Usually even a new student would have started up the stairs after standing there for so long. Hearing Lior start to speak Rhett listened but kept his attention on the girl. There had to be something they could use to stop her.
”Yeah, talking her down would be best. I don’t know how to even start with her though.”
Lior’s next words caught him off guard and brought his attention back to his meister. She did have a point, with their mission fighting with a weapon would complicate things. On the other hand working together would be advantageous for fighting her. The boost of wielding a weapon would assist as well as the act of having a weapon could help discourage. There were just too many possibilities involved until they actually got to that point for Rhett to think of any clear plan.
”If you think it’s a good idea. Showing that you have a weapon might help deter her or if you target her clothes I could pin her in place. It’s probably best to act as it goes and see what the best option is.”
Fighting someone clearly with some level of competency unarmed concerned Rhett but Lior was the meister. Her idea wasn’t completely devoid of logic either so there was no right way to go about it. Hopefully whatever happened they could deal with appropriately.

Lior wasn’t surprised in their agreement that an attempt at talking it out would be best if at all possible. Glancing over at their…opponent? No that didn’t sound right. They may not fight her, the word was inaccurate. But Lior couldn’t come up with a suitable replacement. Perhaps just thinking of her as a differing opinion. Yes, that would do, particularly since opinion was really what was being taken into consideration here. Speaking with her would be their attempt to change her opinion. With any luck they would be able too since she and Rhett both had more than the half brain this girl seemed to have. Lior shut her eyes for a moment before opening them again, a subtle look of disappointment showing around her eyes.
No. That was mean.
Her attention was drawn back to her partner. Rhett had a point in terms of an actual fight should it arise. The sight of a giant screw should be rather intimidating to the average person considering the sharp spirals and sheer size. According to the information they’d been given previously, she was a hand fighter. The prospect of being, well…screwed, would hopefully be a potential deterrent. The girl appeared hardened, but up against a Demon Weapon she may back down. Or she may not.
In which case Lior would be more than happy to fight her. She was nervous but there was another part of her that had an intense need to prove her wrong that she hadn’t expected. Granted give that she could practically feel her attitude from still several feet away made it obvious it would likely do her good to be knocked down a peg or five. Lior took a deep breath this time at the unexpected aggression. No, still mean.
“I believe that will be what we must do,” she said in agreement with Rhett’s last words. “Hopefully the talking works.” She gave him a glance and tried to look encouraging, though the smile pulled a little too tightly to be seen as such. The nerves were still there, but she couldn’t show them once they approached. This she knew. “Let’s see if we can break her down, then.”
Lior began walking towards the girl at a steady pace, one that closer the distance not too quickly as to give her a chance to see them coming. She tried to come off as confident as she felt she should be. Back straight, shoulders back, eye contact that she was hardly good at but managed to keep once they were close enough. Lior addressed her once they were close enough and came to a stop. “Miss Karga I presume?” Or rather knew. She may have offered her hand but she didn’t trust the other girl to grab on and start a fight that way. Lior gestured to herself and then to Rhett. “We are the student team Shibusen set you up with. My name is Lior Menke.” She folded her arms behind her back, putting on the sterner tone of voice she tended to use on Tom when he misbehaved. “I would ask that you reconsider before we go any further in this. The training you have undergone and the training Shibusen students undergo are very different. We fight for completely different reasons, and on completely different skill levels.” She would hate to sound dramatic so she left it at that for the moment, especially if Rhett had something to ad.

Nila failed to notice the NOT students if only for being so wrapped up in her own thoughts. She generally tried not to think too much on fights beforehand, but that was only because she knew she would come out the victor. There was no worry in her mind about winning, oh no. Rather she was wondering where the hell they were and just how she would go about handling them. Nila crossed her arms and shifting her weight onto one hip. She would need to actually see them before she could truly decide, get a feel for their presence. She hoped for their sake they had one.
And they didn’t as it turned out. The oddity drew her attention from the sudden pale out of the corner of her eye. At first glance, Nila took them as passersby, but then they drew closer and stopped. Oh you have got to be kidding me. There was no way this was the team she’d been set up against. Even in the plain clothing she could feel the money radiated off of the girl, and the boy next to her was one of the scrawniest characters she’d ever seen. These two were her opponents? If so, then Nila couldn’t have felt less threatened if she tried.
The girl said her name and Nila gave her a curt nod. Her expression had tightened and her eyes narrowed, glancing them over with skepticism written blatantly on her face. She was listening, but she was very much judging at the same time. It took one more moment for her to get past the initial disbelief, especially since the more the girl spoke, the more apparent it became that this was indeed the team she had been set up to meet up with. Nila felt insulted if anything. She was a menace in the ring and then there were these two. The girl would probably be scared to break a nail and the boy beside her would likely break if she stared at him hard enough. She would wipe the floor with them in five seconds flat. Unbelievable.
Reconsider? Nila snorted, lips twisting into a cocky smirk. “Are you kidding?” Nila shifted and placed her hands on her hips and held her up high, eyeing them up again. She glanced at the skinny boy and then the pale girl. “I wasn’t expecting a stick figure and a princess, but I’m not going to back down just because Shibusen half-assed their effort in sending me a challenge.” There was no way for her to pack more condescension into her words unless she resorted to outright shit talking, and for now Nila didn’t think they were worthy of it. She stepped forward and closer to Lior and stared her dead in the eye with the smirk still plastered on her face. “I came here to fight,” she told her in a low voided before looking over to the boy beside her. “Unless you’d rather back down and admit I’m too much for you two, save yourself the bruises.”

Lior agreed that they should try to talk with the girl before preparing for a fight. That was good! If they could avoid fighting Rhett would much prefer that. If it did come to that he would just have to do his best to prevent Lior and himself from getting too injured. As reassuring as Lior attempted to look he could tell her smile was different. He couldn’t pinpoint the cause with everything going on but it was obviously related to the mission. Hopefully it wouldn’t be anything worth worrying about and they could deal with the whole thing easily.
When Lior started to walk Rhett followed. Staying at her side he kept her pace but didn’t duplicate the stance. He simply walked as he was instead of attempting to give off any air of confidence. The last thing they needed was her testing that façade and breaking it. Besides, he was a weapon! There was only so much intimidation he could pull off in his human form. His weapon form wasn’t much more intimidating but it might be enough to dissuade the girl if they were lucky. While Lior spoke he remained silent and simply stood at her side. Looking at the girl closer up now he searched for an obvious weakness they could exploit.
The girl nodded when Lior spoke but otherwise her first actions were far from positive. She didn’t take them seriously, that much was obvious. Once she started talking things only got worse. As hopeful as he had been she wasn’t willing to listen to words and save them the trouble. When she directed her attention to him Rhett did his best to show no obvious reaction. They were going to have to fight her now so he had to be ready. He did tense as she approached Lior but she only spoke to his meister.
Backing down wasn’t an option for them. If they couldn’t handle a regular girl a real kishin egg was out of the question. The girl had no glaring weaknesses that stood out to him unfortunately. When she finished speaking Rhett turned to Lior to see her reaction. Keeping one eye on the girl he waited for his meister to give him some instruction. Scaring her off seemed like a lost option but he still wanted to help if Lior asked for it. If she did take the girl on herself the whole mission would be that much more stressful.

Well, the young woman’s reaction certainly shot their idea of talking it out in the foot. Lior was hardly surprised. From the looks of their apparent opponent, she doubted this one had ever backed down from a fight, but she could be wrong. If she wasn’t…well, then she would finally get in some real experience with her own form of combat. Not necessarily a bad thing, but certainly a challenge with this girl. Lior knew she was no weakling, but she wasn’t on the physical level of the kickboxer standing before them. She wanted to think she could beat her and had a few ideas in mind if they did fight. But if she lost…
The more the young woman talked, the less Lior found she could take. Nerves had originally had her mind going a mile a minute with potential come backs, anything else that could be said to make her think twice about this, make her listen. But the thought of words only went flying out the window at the jab she took at them. Lior hardly took princess as an insult; she knew plenty of princesses through history that were incredibly strong and admirable. But the words directed at Rhett? If she hadn’t just dissed her Weapon right in front of her, Lior knew for a fact she would have faltered when the young woman took a step forward to get in her face.
But she had, and that made all the difference.
Lior had never once jumped to violence as her sole intent to solve a problem. Never before had she needed to fight down the urge to keep her new balled fists at her sides. She could not place a time where she had felt her face shift into an expression of solidly stoic anger. But this was what the other young woman wanted, and Lior was not about to give it to her so easily. Clenching her jaw, she tightly held back her sudden temper. Not yet. Not if she didn’t have to. They had been instructed to avoid hurting the other person, to avoid fighting in general if at all possible. Words were preferred, but damned if Lior didn’t feel the need to give in to her home city’s stereotype and deck this arrogant kickboxer right in the jaw.
Sighing softly in an attempt to lessen the sudden tension gathering in her chest, Lior said nothing to the young woman and never broke eye contact. She did tilt her head slightly, though, making it clear she spoke to her partner only. She slowly reached towards Rhett with an open hand, palm facing up for him to hopefully easily transform and fall into. Her voice was steady and a touch too low to be considered truly calm when she spoke. “Rhett, if you please.” Lior shifted her head back again to properly look straight ahead, unwavering in her stare as she spoke next to their potential opponent. ”Perhaps I did not make myself clear,” Lior said smoothly, just politely enough to avoid sounding condescending. For now. “We fight on completely different skill levels, and are trained for completely different things. We fight monsters, you fight other people. You may be physically capable of a knockout on another person, but I find it hard to believe you could do the same to something far above your skill level to a quite literally insane degree.”

Earning a reaction from the scrawny one would have been interesting if only for comical effect. Nila would never waste her energy on someone clearly unlikely to be able to take a punch from a five year old much less her own fists. He looked like he’d break if she just looked at him hard, even though he kept a damn even demeanor even when she tried to stare him down. Surprising, and a little impressive. Guts were great, but not if there was nothing to back him up, and from what Nila could see that was precisely the case. Oh well. Hopefully they had enough sense to have the circus’ runaway sideshow fight her if they had the courage to face her like she wanted them to.
Well this was a surprise. She hadn’t expected to get the princess so riled so quickly, not that she was disappointed. Shit talk was half of the majority of her fights, or at least in terms of a precursor. Smirking at the dour face she pulled, Nila placed her hands on her hips and stood up a little bit taller. “Oh, what’s this? I thought Snow White was supposed to be all dainty and sweet,” she jeered, “That look’s more suited to the Evil Queen, don’t you think?” Nila snickered and clasped her hands together, feigning a pitiful and pleading look, and making her voice high pitched and squeaky. “Please don’t cast an awful spell on me! I don’t even like apples!”
Nila crossed her arms and started to laugh, amused at her own joke and at the reaction her taunts were pulling out of the princess at the very least. The scrawny kid was proving to be boring, but that was about what she had expected upon seeing him. Turning her eyes back on the other girl when she started speaking again, she eyed her movement towards her partner and grinned. “And what are you gonna do? Take me on with whatever Weapon whichever of you happens to be? That’s hardly fair.” They wouldn’t and she knew it. No way would they risk that kind of bad reputation. Even if they did, with Nila’s luck it would turn out to be a wooden spoon or something as pathetic as they appeared to be.
The new talk landed on deaf ears. Nila rolled her eyes and groaned. “Yeah, yeah, Snowball, I heard you the first time.” She gave her a more pointed look, blue eyes holding fire within them with her lips curling back in a sneer. “I never said I could fight the monsters. I said I could fight you. Like you said, I can knock out another person, and I intend to knock out you because you’re lot is no tougher than the rest of us on a human scale.” Nila gave them a once over again and scoffed. “Besides, just looking at you two I can tell I’ll wipe the floor with you. Can you really fight monsters if you can’t even manage to beat me?”

Why did people have to be so difficult? The thought was an overarching theme in Rhett’s mind as he tried to think about what to do. If she was some sort of monster there was at least the chance that he could find a weak spot and handle things easily. Unfortunately she was a human so there were no glowing red spots or extra eyes to target. Looking for a pattern was the usually the way to deal with that but they couldn’t afford to watch long enough to figure that out. It was all so much to worry about at once!
Lior’s voice caught his attention as soon as she spoke. The words themselves carried some confusion with them but the tone was what was really off. Something the girl said must have had some effect on her to cause the shift. Not thinking too much about that he stared at the girl one more time before transforming. Lacking a strategy he thought about what to do before transforming, what would someone who was sure they would win do? The idea clicked instantly, now to hope it gave her even the slightest bit of uncertainty. His legs began to transform first as his body reconstructed itself in Lior’s hand. Before his head transformed he gave the girl a slight grin and then finished transforming.
Matching to Lior’s wavelength he felt a slight difference than how it usually was. If they were going to have to fight this girl they had to give it their all. The rules said not to hurt her but with how she was that might not be a viable option. Keeping that in mind he thought about a workable strategy for them. Speaking to Lior through their souls he gave her what he could come up with.
”If we need to attack her with me if you carefully shift your grip to the body you might not cut your hand and can hit her with the blunt head of the screw.”
It wasn’t the best plan but against a human they weren’t supposed to hurt it might give them some advantage.

Oh for heaven’s sake! This girl was truly trying her patience. Every third word out of her mouth made Lior grit her teeth a little more. She knew there were arrogant people in the world, but this girl was just far too much. She was tempting to knock her silly just to take her down a few pegs, but Lior reminded herself of their objectives. Don’t hurt her unless you have to. Even if you must fight her, avoid harming her if at all possible. Avoiding harm wouldn’t be easy given her current attitude as well as the other girl’s sneering, but Lior would make an effort if it came to that.
Which this pompous ass of a girl seemed intent on. Her line of logic made no sense. Shibusen students confronted and killed Kishin Eggs. Students like her and Rhett weren’t quite there yet, but they would be, and insinuating that she could beat them also technically insinuated that she could beat whatever they were meant to eventually face. But Lior didn’t have the patience to explain all that, or the levelheadedness to make it sound as witty and cutting as she wanted. Even through all of that, she did unfortunately strike a chord. The girl was right. If they couldn’t wear her down, or beat her in a fight since that seemed to be the nearing result of their interaction, how could they begin to face up against a monster?
Rhett’s voice brought her back down to focus on the task at hand. He had a valid and effective way of attempting to fight if they needed to attack. Lior saw a problem though. “I’ll certainly try,” she replied privately, “But I’m not certain if I would be able to be that careful at the moment, and with this one I cannot imagine I would care if I got a few nicks so long as we get our point across.” Entirely unlike her, but there were the words. The girl had already insisted again and again on fighting them, and Lior was running out of things to say. She wracked her brain for something else that would convince her. She was silent for a few moments, gears turning until a short sigh left her.
She had nothing.
“Fine,” Lior said flatly, “You wish to fight us? Have it your way.” Oh, but she wanted those words back the moment she said them. Doubt flew back into her mind the moment the sentence flew past her lips. They hadn’t sparred with anyone before. She had never legitimately fought anyone, only training. She knew grapples best, but she needed two hands to execute them to the best of her abilities, but she couldn’t just toss Rhett aside. They were partners. Even in something so infuriatingly simple, they needed to work together. This was all part of their training. The talking, however useless, was a lesson and the fight would be as well.
“You stated fighting you with my Weapon would be unfair, but I think you’re quite mistaken,” Lior said, turning the Demon Screw over carefully in her hands. “You boasted you could take on a Shibusen team. To fight only one of us wouldn’t hold you to that statement.” Lior carefully held Rhett in her right hand, fitting her fingers between the sharp curves of the screw as she attempted to follow his instructions. Lior gave the other girl as determined a look as she could manage. “We are two parts of a whole. If you wish to fight us, I’ll grant you your wish, but you will fight us as a team.”
