Night would fall over the little town quietly for the most part. Sunset, though, had been a blur for most. The town was alive as the sun had dipped lower in the sky. Every able bodied man, woman, and child had vacated their homes and gone to previously set meeting places to help construct barricades they hoped would keep the beast out. Anything that was solid and sturdy was propped up and fit together in a sort of make-shift wall. They knew it wouldn’t do anything if the beast decided it wanted in, but they had to try. They all had to try if they didn’t want to risk losing another brother, son, or husband.
The hunters were out in force. They knew that Irene and Levi were present and that they were there to help, but none of them cared. After facing off against the beast on different occasions and losing someone else each time they took no chances. They sat in groups of two and three on the outside and inside of the wall loadings guns, sharpening knives, and waving to their loved ones, giving them what could be the last smiles they’d ever see form them. Torches on either side of each barricade lit the town square. From the main road, it was the only barricade that wasn’t closed, giving them all only one way out and the beast only one way in should it strike. Occasionally they only heard it out in the fields, but it was the times where it had indeed attacked them that they decided that barricades were necessary.
Adrien had quietly ushered the students out of Giselle’s home in order to console her earlier in the afternoon. Now he stood with the hunters before the main barricade, a butcher knife in his hand. He’d seen the thing, he knew it wouldn’t do much good, but they had to try. Letting out a shaky sigh, he looked back over his shoulder to his sister’s house. Inside, Giselle was holding her and her husband’s wedding rings in her hands, turning them over and over, watching the dried blood flake off into her palms. The immediate shock of grief she’d felt had worn off hours ago, leaving her feeling numb and drained of energy.
All she could hear was her own breathing. She had not been present for the building of the barricades, and she had no doubt that her absence had been duly noted. To hell with them. To hell with all of them. It was all the hunters’ fault anyway. If they weren’t such an inept bunch of overgrown eight year olds full of too much wine and not enough sense, they’d have found and killed the damned thing by now! Giselle could feel the potent mix of ire and hatred pulse through her blood like fire. It made her skin burn and her thoughts blur. It wasn’t fair. What felt like grief but shocked like anger sent pain thundering around in her skull. The rings clattered to the floor as Giselle’s hands flew to the sides of her head, trying to drown out the roar of her blood and numb the pain.
She felt sick. Everything ached, and when she tried to stand she couldn’t keep her back straight. Something else was in the room with her. Its breathing was ragged and shook the room. Her vision blurred and so she shut her eyes. In that instant it went dark, it was like her world suddenly paused. Everything stopped. She wasn’t anything in that moment, she felt like she was just a floating entity alone in a strange place that she could not recall how she came upon. When she opened them again, the pain was gone, and the mirror that hung on the wall that could be reached by rounding the corner from the kitchen reflected the moon’s pale light about the room. But that wasn’t all it reflected. Rearing back at the sight, Giselle screamed and made for the window.
A bone chilling howl echoed through the town. Those who hadn’t taken refuge inside hurriedly did so as the hunters remained at their posts, readying their weapons. Their eyes darted about, trying to see where the howl had come from. Some were frightened; others had a look of eagerness about them. The sound of shattering glass was what caught Adrien’s attention and drew him away from the group. That had come from Giselle’s house! Panicked for his sister’s safety, he ran as fast as his feet would carry him up the street before skidding to a halt. There it was. It was only for an instant, but he saw it. Fur that shone like the sun in the light of the torches and the blue cloth of Giselle’s dress hanging from its mouth. It snarled before bounding through the maze of little houses, mounting the rooftops before leaping into the darkness and out of sight in the direction of the castle. Adrien stumbled back, turning and hurrying back towards the other hunters,
“Giselle! Il a fallu Giselle! Il se dirige vers le château!” ((Giselle! It’s taken Giselle! It’s headed for the castle!))

Under other circumstances Levi would have protested being essentially kicked out of Giselle’s house. Considering that he really didn’t want to be there in the first place though he let it pass. With nothing to really do until night Levi had taken some time to explore the town. It was boring and useless but it wasted some of his time before night fell. Finding nothing of use he found a place to rest and spent his time looking at the map. It was the best they had to work with so he might as well put some effort into memorizing the layout of the area.
Satisfied with his memory Levi attempted to think of some sort of plan for this thing. That would be insignificant considering how little they knew but it was something to pass the time. Bothering the peasants also could have been fun but the kishin would be much more enjoyable. Done scanning over the map and formulating a few ideas about how to approach the beast Levi was once again bored by the town. Returning the map to his pocket Levi sat and waited for things to start getting fun. Peasants doing peasant things were not what he had in mind.
Luckily the setting of the sun did provide him with some entertainment. At first he simply passed the time by reflecting rays off light off his sword at varying targets but once the villagers got active he sheathed Zegen and went off to investigate. So they were trying to protect themselves? Surprising considering how shitty of a job they were doing at it. Barriers to keep the beast from entering the city was actually a good idea, probably the first good one the town collectively had. However judging them on effectiveness was another matter entirely. He could probably have broken through those barriers if he put forth a slight bit of effort.
Heading for the main entrance to the town Levi saw the gap in the barricade. Alright, giving the beast only one entry point would have been a great strategy if they were the least bit competent. Regardless Levi fought the urge to bring up their idiocy. Let the town be failures on their own, he was just a temporary bystander. Walking out past the assembled villagers Levi found a place outside the walls to wait for the kishin, meeting it before it got inside was best.
It was only then that he bothered to check on Irene. It wasn’t an intentional lack of interest but a more shift of priority. Yes she was important to the overall success of the mission but they did have a bit of time before anything started. Giving her a chance to not deal with him seemed like a good idea before them acting as partners became important. Besides, it wasn’t like he was ignoring her or anything. If she needed anything or spoke to him he would have answered. Levi just wasn’t putting in extra effort to strike up a conversation.
As long as Irene was near enough that they could act in the case of the beast’s arrival Levi could care less about what she did to occupy her time. Now that he was gathered near the villagers it did take a certain amount of restraint to stop himself from mocking their choice in weaponry. Children’s toys and coward’s weapons. Not to mention that since they weren’t demon weapons all the villagers combined probably couldn’t scratch the thing. Even with Zegen at his side Levi only had it as a precaution. If anything he might be able to draw blood from the beast with his sword.
Looking around Levi waited for some indication of the kishin but so far nothing seemed like a clue. How long was this thing going to make him wait? Perhaps the kishin was smarter than he thought and was scared away by his brilliant presence. While caught up in his own egotistical thoughts the howl came from in the town. Turning around Levi stared at the town like it was trying to annoy him. How could the howl have come from in their when the whole fucking town was walled up? Even if it broke through the wall there should have been a sound or something.
The useless informant’s brother headed inside to look at things. He was marginally more useful so Levi gave him the benefit of the doubt and didn’t interfere. Maybe it was some stupid dog or some other filthy peasant animal. Resting his hand on his sword out of instinct Levi tapped his foot as he waited for the peasant to return. All the waiting was going to be the death of someone, not him but the next person that pissed him off. About time the man returned and reported that somehow it had gotten into the town and taken Giselle before heading for the castle. At least they had a location to go now. Directing his attention to the villagers Levi dropped the hand from his sword and looked at them.
”You lot stay here. You’re all useless and would just get in my way.”
Waving them off he headed toward Irene and nonchalantly looked toward the castle, at least studying that map hadn’t been a waste.
”Something feels off but looks like we have to do everything here. Let’s go then.”
Heading toward the castle Levi moved at a decent pace, not full out running toward it. Firstly he didn’t want to run too fast for Irene to keep up and he wasn’t sure about the urgency. If the beast kept its prey alive in the castle before killing them then Giselle would still be alive when they got there. Plus he wanted to make sure that it did make it to the castle before them, once it was already inside it would be easier to corner. And of course there was the matter of expending all his energy before the fight and that certainly wasn’t going to happen.

Both Irene and Levi had been dismissed from the home. The young weapon didn’t blame Giselle or the brother, that was tough. The disappearance of her husband, not knowing what fate had come of him, and then receiving a bloody ring… It wasn’t good news and it wasn’t solid news. The man could still be out there, half alive, or he might be fine, or he might be dead. The ring proved his existence and placed bad thoughts into people’s heads. But in reality… the bloody ring told no significant story other than his ring had come in contact with blood.
Irene had taken the time to separate herself from Levi. She wanted to think and have a look at the town. The woman had noted that the male tended to get caught up with himself enough that she could slip off. In her mind, as long as she was back before nightfall no harm would be done. None of them wanted to go hunting for the thing before then, no matter how idiotic she found that idea to be, so she would be on her own until then. Her jeans and black boots had accumulated a thin layer of dust on them from walking through the town. Irene noticed, but didn’t much care. Her mind was mulling over the information she had gathered while at Giselle’s house. What she had been told and what she had seen. The conclusions forming in her mind… were not ones she wished. That look the female had given Levi when he had been his normal pissy and sarcastic self… The description she seemed to give Levi. Her husband missing. The whereabouts and activity of the beast… Logic pointed to it being a person in the town. No one saw it in the day, no sign of it. That drew the conclusion that it was an extremely sound sleeper that never woke up in the light, or more likely, that it was someone here.
Now… the young weapon had formed her own conclusion based on instinct and distrust. But she wasn’t sure, neither would she share her thoughts unless she was more confident. What worried her was the fact the whole town was building a barricade. They meant to keep the beast out or only come in the front. But if she was correct, they were only going to create a worse situation for themselves. It would definitely keep the hidden beast in town until nightfall, when it became its more aggressive self and did cause chaos.
As light began to leave the sky, Irene began her search for Levi. It wouldn’t be extremely hard, not a large town and he had a thing for being near activity and attention. The front gates. All the hunters were present and Levi would be there to mock them, either in mind or aloud. She came easily to his side, her hands in her pockets and her expression as blank as ever. It was a waiting period now… they were all looking the wrong way, expecting the wrong thing. Should she mention something to Levi? Possibly. But she would rather test her conclusion first. A little longer, a little darker, and there should be some sort of evidence of it awaking in someone.
The woman remained quiet, not even looking to the man. Her eyes were somewhat unfocused… She was listening. No doubt in her mind it would come eventually. And it did. The howl echoed throughout the town. And if anyone may have looked to the weapon, someone would have seen a very faint smirk cross her face and disappear in a second.
Adrien ran off to Giselle’s house. At least his instinct was somewhat correct. He was worried about his sister, but in her mind his worry was wrongly placed. She was in danger, but not how he expected. Levi was commenting to the hunters now. Many had taken refuge in their homes, but men remained waiting for an attack to come. Telling them they were useless and that he would handle it. This man irked her… even if he was correct. Those men could do little to help. But Levi was misinformed as well… At least he realized something was off.
”It’s a townsperson.”
Her words came quickly and quietly, hoping to be only for Levi’s ears. That’s why it seemed off to him… it came from inside the town. And that was because they had kept all the people inside the town. He took off running then, and Irene kept right with him. She was thankful for the pace. Keeping up was generally a chore for her… and it wasn’t at the top of her priority list for her to ask him to slow or worse yet… carry her in weapon form, in order to get to their destination more quickly. She didn’t realize Levi had been thinking of letting the creature get their first as well, that would have made her respect him more. Her mind had let that thought cross, but dismissed it as luck on his part. Probably trying not to tire himself.
During the run for the castle, Irene had one more bit of information she decided she would share with him. ”I don’t believe it took Giselle. I believe it is her.” The words came out as emotionless as the rest of her words. Matter of fact and not holding pity. That was her belief and she didn’t tend to be wrong. Some pieces were still missing to make this totally true in her mind…. But she was going to share with him anyway. They were entering a dangerous situation within this castle…. Closer to a place where they would need all the help they could get.
She needed them to be a team.

The paw prints would lead them. As big as car tires, they disturbed the coppery dust and left their mark quite clearly. If that didn’t prove enough, all the students need do was follow the howling. It echoed through the hills but was focused in the woods, moving steadily towards the castle. Branches snapped off as the beast ran between the trees and trampled the underbrush that blocked its path. Two gleaming blue eyes saw all too clearly in the dark. It was a creature of the night; the dark was its possession. They had no right to try and contain it within those walls, and the foolish woman could never have hoped to keep it at bay, oblivious though she was.
The beast roamed the grounds of the castle in not too long at all, copper dust swirling around its paws as it bounded past the open wooden doors and into the main courtyard. They’d stopped closing them after a point. The beast only broke them down time after time. It was a decrepit looking place. As far as castles wet, Chateau de Jarnioux was tiny, but it would do for the time being. The pale yellow stone that constructing most of the town houses nearby constructed the walls here, red and blue shingles alternating along the rooftops depending on which segment they belonged to. It looked like an abandoned fairytale. Perfect for a Kishin Egg to hide in.
Except the beast wasn’t hiding, not really. On the contrary, it had its own reasons for choosing the place and that was storage. Tromping over the abandoned grounds, dark stains marked where it had feasted on previous nights. Broken skeletons lay in corners, the villagers not having had time to remove and bury them yet. Other remains lay scattered about the entrance, a warning to whoever dared wander into the beast’s territory. Golden fur bristling at the night’s chill, the beast stalked readily towards the far wall, bending its front legs upon reaching it and peering down through a window well. Ah good, they were still there.
Jean-Luc Chevalier and Dorian Delacroix lay slumped in a corner. The former possessed a rather nasty head wound from the beast slamming him into the ground before having taken him into her jaws to hide while the latter was wide awake and leering at the nightmare with golden fur. He was bruised and bloody and holding a dislocated shoulder at an angle that didn’t sting so sharply. A low growl left the beast and Dorian flinched, shutting his eyes and turning his face away. The beast barked and turned from the window well, pacing back and forth and pawing at the ground. She needed to get down there. The only reason her scraps hadn’t been found was out of the stupidity of the villagers and because the two were likely too weak to a place where they would be seen. Any sound would have been muffled by their location, making it difficult to hear their pleas. She’d planned it that way, but now she couldn’t figure out how to get them out so she could eat them. Maybe if she let Giselle back the silly girl would be able to lead them to their doom, all the while unsuspecting of what she would end up doing.
But there was another matter to attend to before the beast would go about trying to retrieve her currently out of reach morsels. The students would be hot on her heels; it wouldn’t take long for them to run their way to the castle. Turning from the far wall and stalking the courtyard, the beast surveyed the land with pale blue eyes that gleamed red in the shifting shadows and dim light from torches that blazed along the walls. A feral growl left her as she trod upon the nearest blood stain, rearing back on her haunches and tilting her head back to howl at the moon that hung shining overhead. Let them come. The arrogant whelp and the silent one would make an excellent meal. She could smell them moving closer. She could practically taste their blood already.
The beast would not hide from the students as they reached their destination. She would stand her ground firmly in the middle of the courtyard. Paws the size of car tires and a body that would barely scrape a single story tall, bulky with muscle like a bear but still lean enough to be swift as a wolf beneath the moon’s pale light. Teeth the size of kitchen knives would be revealed as it snarled, back straight and tail hung low to brush the ground. Golden fur covered its body and pale blue eyes that gleamed would greet them with a glare. Giselle was gone, her consciousness buried somewhere deep within. The beast was awake.

On the way to the castle Levi would have liked to form a plan for what they were doing but given the lack of information he had that was a no. He would just have to figure things out once they reached the castle and saw the beast in person. Not ideal but if anything dealing with adversity only made him more amazing! It seemed Irene had some idea about the situation that Levi would entertain. The idea of Giselle being the kishin? It was certainly an amusing one if only because he felt the urge to laugh about it. Not the idea, but the concept itself.
”If you’re right I almost feel disappointed. A kishin that not only brings Shibusen to it but then gives them instructions to finding it? Maybe I wasn’t giving this place enough credit; they may have the stupidest kishin in existence.”
If she was right it felt like the kishin was literally handing itself over to them and Levi was not fond of that. He wanted a challenge to prove his own greatness, not some stupid kishin giving up. Though there was always the chance he was wrong, as unlikely as that may be.
”Or the cockiest kishin in existence. Either way it doesn’t really matter, we’re here to kill the kishin and that is exactly what I intend to do.”
Following the kishin was easy enough with the paw prints leading them. They were bigger than Levi expected though and that was bothersome. He wasn’t scared or even worried about it but the size of the monster would certainly influence how he had to go about killing it. The damned howling was getting on his nerves as well and it took most of Levi’s control to not yell back at the thing to show it who the bigger threat was here.
With the castle coming into view Levi was caught between a wretch and a scoff. This was the castle? This hideous abomination was more akin to a shack than a castle to him. It was almost a disgrace to gaze at it. He wished the monster had destroyed it so it could at least have more prestige as a former castle than exist in its current state. At least there were torches around it so they wouldn’t be left in just moonlight for the fight, it didn’t bring out his good looks as well.
Still the light was not ideal. If he had it his way they would have fought it in the day with the sun up high, then he could still use Zegen to blind the thing if needed. Oh well, no chance for that now so he had to make due. With how stupid this thing seemed Levi probably wouldn’t even need to strategize a way to kill it. Heading to the courtyard Levi heard a louder howl and grit his teeth, this fucking thing was taunting him now.
There was no drawbridge to appease him and the doors to the courtyard were already broken open, that robbed him of the fun of kicking them open. Inside there was the fucker waiting for him to show up and kill it, like a puppy waiting for its master to return home. It was certainly bigger than he was expecting but the important thing was how thick that fur was. As Levi walked into the courtyard his blue eyes met those of the beast and it took conscious control to keep himself under control. Turning to Irene he kept an uninterested tone in his voice.
”Well then let’s see how this team thing goes.”
His right hand was extended enough to catch her weapon form and his soul was accepting of her to not shock her this time. Shades on his forehead Levi turned to face the golden beast in front of him with one song playing in his head. Staring straight into those eyes it had he couldn’t keep his composure any longer and he broke into a grin. The creature’s golden nature was an affront to his platinum grace. He couldn’t allow this to continue as such. Keeping his head cool enough to not charge the thing yet he wanted to see if the thing was more monster or human first, then he could have his fun!
”Looks like there’s only one thing to do now.” His eyes not leaving the creature he placed his left foot forward and entered a stance he was used to training in. From here he could decide what to do with the creature, be it charge it or get out of the way. Grin never leaving his face he waited to see what the kishin would do. Slipping into his native Dutch out of excitement he finished his statement from earlier. ”Dood het beest!” [kill the beast]

The thought of Irene being the Kishin was interesting… Levi’s reaction to it did not seem to be of surprise, but Irene could not quite place what he was thinking. The words came from his mouth then, somewhat explaining what was going on in that royal head of his. He seemed to think…. That it was funny? Though he never quite said it, his normal harshness held that feeling. He still thought himself above, even more so now. And… she was a bit worried. Why would Giselle invite them there? Her first conclusion is that they were running right into a trap. A situation that they never got to look at themselves. Why hadn’t she insisted more that her and Levi go check out the castle? If they knew the layout they might stand a better chance…. She didn’t like not knowing. Especially when a Kishin egg might hold more information than her. Those were dangerous circumstances.
The next thing he said almost made her laugh outright. He commented on how the kishin might be cocky. Him. Levi. Saying something else might be cocky. Either he really had no idea how much of an arrogant bastard he was, or he didn’t feel he was cocky because he could back it up. His confidence was comforting though. While she wouldn’t express her nervousness to the male, the fact that they were new as a team and a dangerous being had invited them into its territory… it remained that she was nervous. The trail was even easy to follow, like leading a lamb to a slaughter. Lord Death help them if Levi’s arrogance gave out.
They were closing the distance between themselves and the howling kishin… The castle just before them. It was as if it were falling to pieces. Irene could imagine Levi’s disgust at the place, seeing as she even thought it was a mess. Unstable was the word that worried her. This ‘castle’ was coming apart and if they were to fight inside or around it, they might soon find hidden tunnels, passages underneath, or just an inconvenient cave in.
Irene matched Levi’s pace as he slowed. It seemed he wanted to walk himself into the courtyard where the beast was waiting. The loud howl echoed in her ears, her mind still swirling all the possibilities of avoiding potential injury or danger. Her eyes darted around the caste and the courtyard as they proceeded. Know their surroundings…. The beast certainly would. Take in the creature as well. Large. Light hair. Huge paws as the tracks suggested. Huge teeth. Levi’s confidence in himself was rubbing off on her a bit. She had confidence in the meister as well.
For a small bit she had been keeping a bit of her sights on her meister. Just out of the corner of her eye, to catch what he was doing and any major changes in demeanor. She didn’t want him surprising her. The moment he moved to turn to her, her gaze moved more to him. Eye still on the beast, but more focus on him so he knew she was paying attention.
Though his words weren’t completely encouraging, Irene knew that was not who he was. Her face as blank as his voice seemed to be, she gave half a nod. We will own the field Parting words she had spoken at their first ‘meeting.’
The faint light from before enveloped her body, the light red hue present as well. The transition from human to weapon always had her excited. The light pole connected to the dark blades. It fell to his hands and on first contact she was ready for him and she found he was accepting of her as well. No fight for power or dominance, for she learned to let him have his way. Adoring his power, strength, skill, and confidence.
The shifting of her meister’s body, the excitement for a battle about to unfold…. Irene hadn’t realized how much she craved this. How much she had needed this arrogant prick.

Their footsteps drew near, and the beast craned her head around to gaze at the entryway of the castle. The sight of them made the Kishin Egg’s blood boil. Took them long enough, had they any idea how hungry it was? The thought of how their souls would taste had the beast drooling already. Acknowledging their present, she turned fully to face them and gave a low growl, head low to the ground and eyes blazing with hunger. These two, in all likelihood, would be the best meal she’d had so far. Starving though she was, patience was required. Watching the silent one change into her Weapon form and hearing a proclamation of words that meant nothing in her tongue, she paused. Pawing at the bloodstained dust beneath her to stir up puffs of copper, the beast bared its teeth and snarled at the team. They were no different than the countless arrogant hunters she’d slain thus far. She hoped that they would at least be a challenging hunt. It was no fun when the prey simply gave up as so many had after she’d kept them for a few days. The Meister took his stance and the beast found her own. Crouching lower to the ground with her ears turned flat against her head, she continued to bare her teeth and snarl. Her movements were slow and calculated, the best slowly stalking around her prey, not taking her eyes off of them for single second. Where to strike first, that was the question. If all went well, than their little spat would end with her victorious but only after having fought valiantly. If it was too easy she always felt dissatisfied with her victory. Did she lead them further in or did she keep them contained in the courtyard? Was it worth going straight for the Meister’s neck or would it be better to play it safe? The latter was decided upon. Rearing back caused the beast’s muscles to ripple and bunch beneath the layers of golden fur. Launching herself towards the team, she aimed for a feint. Blue eyes were glued to the Meister’s neck, and only feet away was when she changed course. Her head moved first, turning down with the rest of her body following it. Something akin to a gravelly bark left the beast as she opened her jaws and aimed to clamp them down upon the Meister’s left leg. Immobilization would turn the tides in her favor as well as provide entertainment. It was always fun to see who well prey fared with an injury. Most merely lay still and let her tear into them from experience, but she knew that if she could injure this one that he wouldn’t be giving up so easily. Oh, she hoped they didn’t disappoint. She had been so bored until now.

To be fair Levi was just a bit more concerned than he led on. Nothing worth mentioning though, it was miniscule at best. There was simply one annoyance that created a bit of doubt in his mind. This…beast for lack of a better term was just as was described. That didn’t bother him at all though. This thing could be ten times larger and breathe fire and Levi wouldn’t be scared of it. His only concern was how it fought. Levi was familiar with fighting humans so that didn’t faze him in the slightest, but animals like this were another matter.
This thought nearly presented a problem for him but he was the great Levi Kastein. He recalled that kishin eggs were humans at one point and considering how it was such a big problem it probably acted like one. In that case he would just think of it as any other human and come out victorious like always. If it really did act more like an animal then there was no chance it could outsmart him and he would simply put it down. With these thoughts put into place there was truly nothing for him to worry about from this kishin.
As the kishin moved around him Levi remained how he was, his stance secure he waited calmly for the thing to make a move so he could see what it planned. Rushing something like that was stupid even by Levi standards; if it was a normal human he could easily rush it and be done. Knowing how this thing worked was important to figuring out how to beat it and Levi didn’t want to get lucky and kill it too quickly. If there wasn’t any fight this whole mission was a waste of his time, soul not included.
If the kishin was too close to getting behind him he would move to correct that. He was confident and playing with the creature but he wasn’t going to just let it attack him when he wasn’t looking. Making sure to keep his eyes on the creature he watched it prepare for an attack against him. When it finally came Levi was ready and stood where he was. Facing the beast he slightly lowered his weapon but made no move to attack. Even he was aware this thing wasn’t stupid enough to just rush at him or else it would have just done so from the start.
When the head moved down Levi moved away. Obviously stepping back to avoid the mouth and lowering his hand as well. Did this creature really think he would just let it touch him? For exhibiting some human intellect with that attack it didn’t seem that smart. Levi was quick to jut out his right hand and the corsque with it. Aiming a quick jab with the weapon for the eye of the kishin while moving back to keep his distance. For now he would play around with the kishin and see what exactly it could do before taking it out of its misery. Preferably ending it with one decisive and amazing attack to exemplify his awesomness.
Getting some distance between the kishin and him Levi stared at the creature with a grin. Keeping Irene at the ready Levi waited to see what the kishin would do next.
"Don't bore me too much now!"
Hopefully this could be a bit of fun before he ultimately killed the kishin.

Time had seemed to stand still at first, Levi in his stance and the kishin in its. Slow stalking from the kishin had been taken to, but mostly it was waiting. Waiting on the other, wondering which would move first and what action would be taken. This fight would grant her a lot of information about her own meister, even if her focus was meant to be on the beast ahead of them. The waiting was good in her mind and she was glad for his course of action. To learn how the enemy would strike, to wait and examine. The only issue she ever found with this way of thought was that if you waited too long, the enemy may learn just as much. Learn what you need and take them out, that was more her style. She worried…. Levi may take to the fame and glory of a fight more than she wished.
It had begun.
The kishin egg the first variant in its movements, readying itself for the pounce. It sped towards them, quick and completely focused on Levi’s upper self. A death strike right off? Irene found it unlikely, but also animalistic in nature. Depending on how much humanity these kishin egg clung to and how intelligent it actually was, she could not guess the movements properly without more information. Thankfully she had the skill and speed of her meister to rely on. The shifting of the kishin’s paw movements clearly signaled a different attack point, something Levi had already observed and reacted to.
They were away from the beast in a moment, Levi’s movements just as swift as the creature’s. He made another motion as well, a counter on his part. Her weapon form wielded by the capable man, she was aimed to cripple the kishin’s vision. A leg for an eye? The length of her weapon form assisted the attack and retreat, a situation she had never really thought of before. As of yet, she had seen no information to assist her meister and felt it best to not open her mouth. Either of them could get agitated with the other, more likely her with him, and talking made the chances of that grow exponentially.
The female visible in the dark blades for a moment, she watched her meister grin and heard the words come from his mouth. Oh the cocky man… He acted outwardly as if it were a game, and in reality…. She didn’t doubt he was having fun with it. Her eyes rolling at how she saw this as more childish than royal, she spoke no word.
This was going to last longer than she had hoped.

The arrogant one proved to be more skilled than the beast had given him credit for. Interesting if only for the way that it proved the team more worthy of taking her on than previously thought. She may need to amend her strategy if his skills continued to be up to par. For now it was no great worry, not by a long shot. If anything the beast found it thrilling. After round after round against basic backcountry hunters with their rifles that were little more than glorified bottle rockets, she was glad to welcome an opponent that appeared to possess more than half a brain.
He was brave, this one, not appearing to move an inch even as she charged straight for him. High praise considering how the rest had run for the hills. The beast kept a close eye on him even as her jaws snapped at his leg. It moved out of her reach and the sharp clacking of teeth could be heard as the beast’s mouth clamped down on nothing but air. The glint of metal quickly drew her attention and she reared back, letting the jab swish past before snarling. The glare sent at the two followed by the slight step back sent a clear message as the beast swiped at the air between them. Get that thing out of my face!
Even in taking a step back, the beast was only still for an instant. As the Meister gained distance away and stared her down, she followed along swiftly. Head low, limbs moving fluidly with her body low to the ground in clear stalking form. He was talking again, but this time she understood. Baring her teeth, she barked at the prince. She would say the same if her other half weren’t unconscious and absent.
Moving through her options quicker than before, she threw out trying to attack from behind. He was obviously too smart for that, as previously proven. He never took his eyes off the beast even for a second. A worthy opponent if a bit troublesome. Still, the challenge would only make her eventual victory all the sweeter. Tail swishing once, twice, the beast ran at the team once again. She didn’t bother with another feint, it wasn’t worth the effort and it would only waste time since it would no doubt be blocked or avoided yet again.
The beast halted abruptly only feet from the team, swiping out at them with its claws. If hit anything so be it, but it wasn’t her main attack. The instant the paw was back on the ground, she lunged straight at the Meister, maw open and teeth headed straight for his left shoulder. Any injury that lessened their capability to move properly would be in her favor. The beast was having fun with them so far. She only hoped the hunt would continue. She wanted the taste of their blood to be well worth the fight.

His first attack didn’t work out exactly as planned and that was upsetting. Sure it was a relief that this creature was at least worth his time but now it was getting out of line and didn’t know when to die. Planning ahead wasn’t something that Levi did nor did he feel the need to do such a thing, as long as he focused on making his next attack the last one and amending that situation as needed. Keeping his distance from the beast he wondered what sort of attack it would go for next, and how to expertly turn it against them.
Fear wasn’t an issue to him but Levi still aired on the side of caution. The beastly creature with its fangs and claws might have been intimidating to a lesser person but Levi was only concerned with the size of the beast. Unfortunately anything that big would probably hurt if it managed to land a blow on him and may be more difficult to kill as such. He would have felt more confident with a sword but Irene did offer more distance for him to play with, not that he would make optimal use of it. At the least she offered some more time for him to sort out his actions before clashing with the kishin.
A straight attack wasn’t what Levi expected from the kishin after the earlier display of cowardice and prepared himself as such. Getting ready to hop back and to the right in order to dodge the attack and counter Levi was taken by surprise by the lack of a faint. Following through with his plan to move in order to avoid the claws but the teeth were another problem. After moving to the side already his footing was off too much for him to make another sharp turn.
Seeing that the maw was aiming for his left shoulder didn’t offer him many options. A soul purge might work but if the strike didn’t do enough damage his arm would be closer to its mouth than he was comfortable with. If he was using a sword a nice cleave upwards might be exactly what he needed but Zegen wouldn’t work properly against this thing. Irene did have potential but with the range difference an upward cleave wouldn’t have the same impact as if he had a sword. He could manage though because there was no way he was allowing this creature to defile him with its drool.
If he had some armor this would have been much easier but without such a luxury Levi had to improvise. Moving his right hand up to the base of Irene’s flukes he allowed the beast to get within his space and quickly jabbed Irene toward the side of its mouth. Aiming for where the cheek connected with the jaw if the attack connected it would most likely bury the blade of the corseque fluke deep into the beast and at the least cause it some pain. Not the killing blow that Levi would have liked but it was enough for now.
In defense of his left shoulder Levi moved with his strike, using the attack to turn toward the weapon. In the process he even grabbed the corseque with his left hand for a moment like someone properly wielding one would. That didn’t last long as he let go and retained his singular hand approach. That was too close of an encounter for him and that simply would not do. He would barely tolerate commoners touching him so some creature had no right to even get close to him with its disgusting mouth!
Wanting to end the confrontation Levi clenched his left hand and rushed the creature as soon as he regained his balance. Wavelength gathered within his hand as he prepared a soul purge and focused on using his wavelength to the fullest, the platinum arcing over his hand like a glove and illuminating the area around it with silver light and flashes of purple. Aiming an uppercut for the beast jaw he knew the attack wouldn’t be too damaging if it hit but the soul purge should deliver enough of a punch to destabilize it. Right after the punch came a thrust of Irene aimed for the part of the jaw that connected to the throat. He wasn’t sure if the attack would work but if the anatomy of this beast was even remotely the same to humans he should be able to cripple it if the attacks were effective, though a death blow was his intention.

The battle had just begun and Irene already knew that fighting with Levi would take its toll on her. The movements were quick in the heat of battle, both between the beast and her meister, but her mind calculated them seemingly at a much faster rate. Her meister unmoving until some of the last moments, moving his limbs out of the range of the beast’s mouth. The snapping of the jaw seemed to echo in her ear, but Irene kept her focus on their opponent and on the movements of her own meister. She needed to get to know his attacks and movements so that she knew what to expect from him in all circumstances so that she could tell when to keep her mouth shut or when to help him.
His ‘attack’ for the thing’s eye was unsuccessful, though not surprising. Animals were known for their reflexes, aiming straight for a main sense organ did not seem like a high probability of success. Regardless of it getting to back up unscathed, it seemed more than pissed. A snarl erupted from the kishin egg as well as what looked like a glare. It would never cease to amaze Irene the human-like expressions that these kishin eggs could maintain even when falling so far from humanity.
The anger from the beast and backing away only lasted so long, soon she was right back following Levi’s movements, getting back into immediate distance. Irene hoped that Levi was at least imagining that the beast would have semi-human patterns still integrated within. The way it seemed to calculate its surroundings and what was happening where much higher than the intellectual level of a mere animal. Just like her meister did not take his eyes off of her, the kishin egg had not looked away from him either. Irene noticed the swishing of its tail, locking it in the back of her mind just in case it fell into a pattern, and instantly the beast was in their faces again.
It stopped immediately in front of them, one single paw lashed out at them. ”Watch for a follow-up.” Her words were quick, quiet, and emotionless. With the beast merely swiping one paw at them, it seemed like much too little effort was put into that ‘attack.’ More was behind her swift approach besides a weak swipe. And instantly there was another, the sturdy stance the beast had taken by leaving the three other paws on the ground instantly shifted into a lunge right at them. The attack was for the right shoulder of her meister. She was playing too. Her meister and this beast… too cocky for their own good.
Something had thrown her partner off, taken him by a bit of surprise. ”Don’t underestimate her. She’s observant, quick, and calculating. Just make sure you stay firmly on your throne.” Her words weren’t irritated or concerned, she wanted to remind Levi that the kishin egg was indeed smarter than an average beast, just in case that’s what screwed him up. They couldn’t afford for him to think too highly of himself. He was quick and powerful, but against an animal’s strengths and ‘human’ intelligence he needed to have his mind in the game.
In these few moments of Levi’s surprise he had made up for it by striking at the kishin with her weapon form. It was a strike made out of necessity, not out of ease. Her partner was striking, but nowhere near deadly. He also didn’t seem amused by this, as if he were still playing games. He regrouped himself, leaning into the attack and moving with her then preparing for another attack. This time her own partner was doing the rushing, his soul wavelength shifted, more force being focused to his hand. Thankfully he was moving to follow up the soul purge as well, using her weapon form as an attack to the beast’s throat. He was quick but so was she. They both needed to watch for her movements, any shift in her muscles could propel her one way or another.

It seemed for a moment as though she had taken the arrogant one off guard. Good. However even under pressure, the Meister was quick move himself out of harm’s way. The beast’s jaws clamped down on nothing at the same time the pointy end of the damned corseque rammed into the junction of jaw and skull. There was an audible crack followed by a shrill keening sound. She tasted blood and felt left part of her jaw sag lightly. Pain made the beast hesitate, experimentally letting her maw hang open before trying to close it fully. Another high pitched sound left the mad soul, but it was intermixed with a snarl. How dare they!
Blinded by a volatile mix of pain and fury, the beast turned with all her weight on a single paw, powering through the shooting sting of a jaw now half useless in a frenzied attempt to catch the Meister’s escaping form. She didn’t see the flash of platinum until it was already upon her. His fist connected with her already injured jaw and sent her head snapping up at a sharp angle. Searing pain shot through the already screaming nerve endings and new blood gushed over her tongue from the wound. The beast was shaken so that her front paws left the ground, backpedaling a few paces on her haunches as her eyes swam. Dizzy, she couldn’t see straight, the injury clouding her senses even more so. Shaking her head from side to side to rid herself of some of the fogginess, blood spattered in light speckles about her as it seeped slowly from her injured jaw.
The attack aiming for her throat would have been devastating. This time catching a glint of metal, the beast ducked her head beneath the path of the corseque. A feral growl rumbled from the beast’s throat as her head rose immediately after the danger was no longer immediate; jaws open once again to clamp down around the metal just below the flukes. The beast disregarded the pain, only cursing the fact that her hold would now be weaker as she twisted around with as much force as she could muster before releasing the Weapon from her jaws. Pulling it straight from the Meister’s hand was her goal, but even only throwing him off balance would be fortuitous enough. She needed an opening; the beast only hoped she had made one.
The beast stayed close, not moving even four feet from the team. Head held low as always, her muscles were tense as she poised to move wherever she needed in order to dodge or edit her strategy. Her injured jaw throbbed, making it difficult to think, red dripping steadily from the wound and keeping a metallic taste in her mouth, but not the one she wanted. Their blood was what she wanted and it was their blood she would have. Her tail swished once, twice. The beast snarled and opened her bloodied maw, leaping forth and aiming straight for the Meister’s throat.

He heard Irene’s words but made no effort to acknowledge them. Levi knew what he was doing and didn’t need to be reminded. Strategy was nothing new to him even if his demeanor would say otherwise. Either way Levi preferred to make decisions in the moment instead of planning ahead so his actions would only be determined in the moment anyway. His attack connected and seemed to at least damage the beast, not nearly as much as he would have liked though. The bulk of this creature was getting annoying but they at least had a start to breaking it down.
This pathetic creature should feel honored that he made contact with it and graced its body with his magnificent fist. It wasn’t the most obvious weak point like the eyes but Levi had managed to make its jaw a viable target. If he continued to target the jaw they should be able to cripple the beast if not kill it outright. Getting the stab at its throat however might be just what they needed to put down the cur and finish things. If only his first strike at its throat landed then perhaps things could be over and done with already.
Missing was infuriating enough but having the mongrel bite down on Irene was unforgivable. How dare something so filthy even consider biting down on HIS weapon? A crime punishable by death and death he was now more motivated to deliver. Due to his poor stance and grasp of the weapon he didn’t have a good enough hold on her to keep in his hand. When the beast attempted to pull Irene out of Levi’s grasp she succeeded. If intent alone could kill the beast would have dropped the very instant Irene left his hands, death would have been an act of mercy in that case.
Levi didn’t get disarmed. Taking his weapon away from him was not something that happened, ever! He could forgive his brother for the one occasion but even that he was still sour about. To think that some common animal could manage such a feat was unthinkable; it broke every rule of the universe to Levi. When the beast’s body tensed Levi’s did the same. Just because there wasn’t a weapon in his hand didn’t mean he was any less dangerous. Without Irene in his grasp the only thing the beast accomplished was shortening his range and making him unimaginably pissed.
Watching the creature intently Levi waited to see what it would try and do. He knew killing it was essentially out of the question without Irene but that didn’t deter him from trying. Any semblance of a smirk was gone and if the thing could see his soul any hint of green would have been drowned out by a mass of platinum and purple. His control over his soul lapsed and sparks leapt off his hands at random to illuminate the darkness around him. Staring the beast down he made no movement and simply waited.
”Ernstige fout.”
Lapsing into Dutch Levi muttered under his breath. The beast lunged at him and aimed for his throat, a fair trade but if he couldn’t land his hit it wasn’t getting any luckier. Like the creature did Levi dropped to avoid the attack, against a more human enemy he would have taken this chance to sweep out their legs but that would be a foolish move. Rearranging himself he reached up with his left hand to grab the creature’s jaw and yank it down with all his strength. He didn’t care about contact or his hand touching teeth; if this thing died he could handle some minor injury.
Extending his right hand the word weapon formed in his throat as he prepared to bark the order. Stopping himself the word changed but the tone did not. ”Irene!” It still sounded like a command but using a name was something Levi rarely did in the first place. They were supposed to be a team and work together and right now he needed to take advantage of the beast injured jaw as much as he could, there wasn’t time for him to go retrieve his weapon. Assuming Irene would do what he wanted and return to his hand this was the best chance they had.
As strong as he was he didn’t think he could subdue the beast for more than a few seconds with his stunt. It would only last that long through surprise and pain from the injured jaw, the best he could hope for would be ripping it straight off but even that would leave the claws as threats. Trusting Irene would have the same idea in mind and would do what he wanted he prepared himself for a rather desperate killing blow. Failure would put him in serious danger but that was less of a concern than killing the trash that dared challenge him.
The instant he felt something touch his hand Levi thrust forward aiming to pierce through the beast temple. Too many transgressions had been made against him to leave this monster with anything that even resembled mercy or kindness. Death was all he would give it; a quick one was the only aspect of it that could be deemed merciful through his unending benevolence.

Levi’s attack had hit. Though it was not anything that would prove instantly deadly to the beast, it was still hit. Sinking into the jaw, Levi was powerful enough to rip through essential muscle. A high sound erupted from the beast, along with the sounds of the broken body. It would be pissed now, time would tell if that meant more trouble for them or a less thoughtful approach on the kishin’s part.
Even Levi’s follow-up hit. Cracking into the jaw must have sidetracked it, pissed it off enough to get it’s mind off what it should be focusing on. She could feel his concentrated wavelength being forced into the beast. She was thrown off, shaking her head and obviously in pain. Assurance that Levi had this under control swept over the weapon. Her uncertainty in his abilities were ceasing slowly, but she still needed to pay attention. For her own sake, if not for his. He made two successful attacks, but that didn’t guarantee everything following would land.
And it just so happened the next didn’t land. Her weapon form swept above the beast’s ducking head and a growl erupted from the thing. Shit That foretold nothing good was coming. Already the beast was back to paying attention to what was at hand AND it was pissed. Head up instantly after the swipe, the thing’s jaws secured the pole of Irene’s form. In the next moment, the beast had twisted and thrown her from Levi’s grasp. Out of Levi’s hands and now free from the beast’s jaws, Irene instantly reverted to her human form. She wasn’t hitting the ground as a useless object. Anger easily written all over the female’s face, Irene’s feet hit the ground first, her left hand hit the ground as well, stabilizing her as the momentum was still sliding her back across the ground somewhat. Her right hand instantly shifted to her partial form, dark blades forming over the knuckles. Levi was without her.
Multiple possible actions flew through her mind, each with an up and down side. She was slow and less powerful without Levi, but if he wasn’t ready to catch her he could be distracted and take a hit from the kishin egg. Regardless, she needed to get closer, get back in range of the beast and to her meister. That first movement, she instantly did, gaining back the distance she had been thrown.
Irene cursed in her mind as she noticed something that seemed to be a sign of launching an attack. That same swishing tail as before. Her meister was beyond angry. Levi’s face was easy to read, as well as the rest of him. It was like the rage poured out of him. As long as that didn’t unfocus him from defeating the thing… that was fine.
For a split second, the weapon was fearful for her meister. The beast was quick… Irene had no chance in keeping up with it. It lunged for Levi. Gladly, her was a match for the beast’s speed. He mimicked the beast’s earlier movement, ducking beneath the attack. His one hand jutted out to grab at the beast’s jaw. His other hand was towards Irene. With that simple movement, she took to her weapon form. During that short time his call of her name rang out, but his small sign was enough. In barely any time at all she was in his hand, expecting and accepting his overly angry wavelength.
In the next moment he was thrusting her forward. Another strike for the kill. His anger was refreshing in a way, jolting and powerful. She found herself waiting for the death of this creature. Not from a worry of danger, but a sort of hate.
