The cracked and worn path would lead them inward. The building, dark and grey, loomed several stories high over their heads and made the abandoned town of Matsuo all the more ominous. The clouds that gathered overhead hung low, darkening the space even further. The grass grew tall all around them, spilling over onto the path in places almost as though it meant to drag them into the unknown.
The apartment complex Kaede had mentioned hiding in alongside Akane was indeed nearby just as she’d said. It was the second they would run into a way down the path. The doors were broken down from the inside, splaying them out on the ground and leaving the inside exposed. The doorframe sagged in the middle, signaling the building itself was hardly to be considered stable. Inside dead leaves and layer upon layer of dust resided. The floor held water stains and shallow puddles from where rain fell in through windows where glass had not been present for years. Inside each of the apartments, the tatami mats were old and broken, the edges fraying and holes having been eaten through them in places by insects and rodents. Few of the doors remained on their hinges. Closets were flung open and a stray futon could be found leaning against the far wall. For what purpose would remain unknown.
Moving further past the initial complexes, the path would become more broken. Bits and pieces of cement would appear to have been trod upon by something large and very heavy, leaving the walkway to be overrun by weeds and tall grass. It was soon obscured from view, but the substantial gaps in the overgrowth would still let the students know where to go. Moreover, there was evidence that Matsuo was not in fact totally abandoned, at least not by humans. As they moved further, they would spot footprints in the mud and tall grass. Enormous paws had left them, easily the size of a child’s swimming pool. It was a warning of what they would later face.
The path would reappear in places only to disappear yet again into the underbrush. As it did, the students would happen upon the middle of what would have been the center of the town and in doing so would find the shrine. It was a small thing old and shoved towards the side of old cement. Moss covered the little roof and weeds overshadowed the small statue held within. An old dish for incense laid near the statue, holding nothing but a bit of old rain water and algae inside of it. Though not immediately obvious and completely out of sight unless one were to kneel down, the shrine housed a statue of a wolf. The canine appeared with its head down and its back straight, ready to attack. The kanji carved into the siding was worn and no longer readable, but it would not be a far stretch to think that this had once been the guardian of Matsuo.
The warehouse would be barely visible from beside the shrine. Partly hidden behind another apartment complex, it was set beside two large pools of water, supposedly for recreation. Nowadays the water, though still blue, was filled with algae and fallen plant debris and held an unpleasant odor to it. What would be more unsettled for the students, though, would be that even passing the shrine as far as they were from the warehouse, they would hear another sign that they were not alone. Breathing. Slow, deep breaths could be heard coming from somewhere nearby, the sound of a monster hidden away as it slept.

Chiyo nodded and followed Bang further into the city, the pair carefully following Kaede's instructions. Bang had suggested the warehouse, so that's where the pair began to walk towards - making a general beeline for the back of the town. Kaede had said it was further back, but Chiyo wondered exactly how far back - the emptiness of the town was giving her the heebie-jeebies. In a way, she loved it and hated it - the spooky atmosphere fit Chiyo perfectly, and abandoned cities were her favorite things, but the desolation was real here. It wasn't a mystery why it was so abandoned - there was an inugami here, a kishin, a great evil. It cut any enjoyment Chiyo would have gotten from exploring. The town was almost pretty in it's desolation within the fog, but the underlying fear of the beast that lurked inside made it hard to appreciate it.
As they walked, they saw footprints. Giant imprints on the mud, made by some great beast. Chiyo swallowed nervously and pointed them out to Bang. "It is here," she said simply, her voice barely a whisper. She left it at that and continued walking, not wanting to stick around in case whatever left them came back. It was sort of the point of the mission, but Chiyo wouldn't mind if they delayed the eventual meeting a little.
As they picked their way past the shrine, Chiyo paused to look at it. She had seen many shrines like this before in Kyoto, but this was on the smaller side. It was in disrepair, with moss and weeds covering it, and the incense dish was half full of brackish water. Curiosity overtaking her, Chiyo carefully pulled away the weeds, clearing away the overgrowth to reveal the statue inside. It was a carving of a fierce wolf, its fangs bared. It was very lifelike, looking as if it would spring away from it's stone perch at any moment, and Chiyo automatically looked over to the side to see if there was an inscription. It was too faded to read, although she tried to get some of the grime off with her sleeve, but whatever it said was probably the name of the town guardian - if that was what this was, and the possibility was high. Chiyo felt suddenly very sad for the guardian. Its town had been desolate for a long while. She placed her hand reverently on the top of the shrine and turned to Bang. "Sorry. We can go now," she said, turning away from the shrine and heading toward the warehouse once more. She thought she heard the sound of breathing, but she nervously tried to explain it away as the trees rustling. Only the wind.
They could tell they were getting near - there was a peculiar smell that got stronger the closer they got, as did the strange breathing noise. When the team neared the warehouse, Chiyo noticed the water pools. They looked dirty and full of a strange, gross thing floating on the top. Chiyo's inner germophobe reared its head and she felt herself giving the pools a very wide berth, wishing for hand sanitizer.

As the two girls had their way through the run down town Bang was looking around. She was honestly relying on Chiyo to lead the way not in the sense that she thought that Chiyo knew where she was going but more for the fact that Bang could take in the layout of the area. As much as she would always hate to admit it she was a little glad for her military training. They were heading to the ware house but if things moved away from there Bang wanted to be able to find some good high ground for Chiyo. Her mister might not know this but rocket launchers work best when fired from above down at a target.
Bang paused for a moment as her meister stopped at the shrine. The thing was kind of creepy and when Chiyo pulled back to reviled the wolf Bang jumped. She wasn’t expecting that at all but she recovered quickly enough.
”That scared the crap out of me. Out of my element here.”
When Chiyo made her comment Bang nodded her head and made her way to the ware house. She didn’t see the pools of water at all and stepped right into it. Bang shut her eyes and took in a deep breath.
”Oh please don’t tell me I just stepped in something gross.”
She looked down and gave a grown seeing her foot in the nasty water. She pulled it out and shook it off making a whimpering nose as she did so but all stopped when her heard the breathing. Bang slowly put the peace of metal down that she grabbed before.
”Or maybe we won’t have to get this thing to come to us. If we get the jump on it I can break a few glow sticks before it even wakes up! What luck.”
Bang motioned for Chiyo to fallow her lead now as she very quietly made her way to the sleeping beast. She pulled her glow sticks out and got ready. As soon as she saw this thing she was going to brake as many as she could turn into her weapon form and let Chiyo unleash Hell on this monster. That was a solid plan.

The warehouse lay just beyond the blighted pools. The path was clearer, still laid down in paved walkways with fewer cracks. Weeds popped up through breaks in the path still, though, swaying lightly in the gentle breeze that slowly but surely was bringing the mists closer in to Matsuo and the student team. With the clouds hanging overhead casting everything in a gloomy shade of grey, the warehouse up ahead seemed to loom over them. Once used for holding coal from the nearby mines, it stood large and empty, or so it should have. Empty was perhaps no longer the proper word to use, not if the deep breathing coming from within was any judge.
The structure stood close to four stories tall but was devoid of multiple floors, having only a concrete base and a high ceiling. Panes of glass that had once allowed light to filter down into the space were either clouded with grime, cracked, or missing completely after being broken. The walls were made of wood, strong siding now bent and sagging under a weight it could barely support. Fallen leaves had blown in, scattering wildly about over the floor and creating soft scratching noises that carried outwards. The overgrown grass came to an abrupt stop upon meeting the concrete facing the open side of the warehouse, the doors having collapsed down on themselves long ago. The place was dark and damp, save for one blindingly white feature.
In the center of the floor lay the great wolf Kaede had described.
Lying with a slight curve as to fit itself in the floor space available, the beast lay with its head upon its paws as it slept. Even lying down it was massive, leaving very little in the way of wiggling room between its fur and the walls. Black nose pointing towards the open front of the warehouse, it’s head was enormous as the rest of its body, all covered in snow white fur. Its eyelids appeared to be painted red, sweeping strokes taking the pigment up and out along its temples. Beneath were similar strokes of red. Inky black marks ran up from its paws as well from claws that appeared sharp enough to tear through metal. The gently curving lines ran up the beast’s legs before coming to a halt in a graceful arc over its back, joined by more red that swoop in curves from either of its shoulders. Its tail was the most curious. The same dark markings colored the end black and ran part of the way up to its hindquarters, the ends of its fur curling awkwardly while the end of its tail fell neatly, almost like that of a calligraphy brush.
Their presence had not yet disturbed the Kishin Egg. Even as the students drew near, the beast slept on. Pointed ears fell slightly askew atop its head, the great wolf clearly relaxed and dreaming of its next meal. Its heavy breathing echoed through the structure, making its presence ever clearer. Every now and again its right ear would twitch and its tail would shift, but it made no move to rise. For now the beast slept on, though it wouldn’t be long now before it awoke.

As soon as Chiyo saw the wolf, she grabbed Bang by the arm and pulled her behind a wall, doing her best to keep quiet. She looked Bang in the eye and put a finger to her lips before peeking out from behind the concrete slab that was the only thing dividing the team and the beast.
It was huge - the wolf took up most of the room on the first floor of the warehouse, snow white and staring unblinking at Chiyo. She ducked her head, a rush of panic courisng through her body, but when she peeked again, hesitantly, she realized that the blood red she saw was merely the Kishin's eyelids. The red patterning had fooled her, and she let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. The red fur patterns continued past the temples of the head, and the paws (rested delicately on top of each other and what the head rested on in turn) had coal black marks that ran from its claws to its back. Chiyo let her eyes linger on the claws for a moment before turning her attention to the kishin as a whole.
"It is asleep," she breathed quietly to Bang Bang. "If you are silent, and fast.." Chiyo raised her glowstick as explanation, and the eerie green light cast shadows on her face. She gave her partner a nod, eyes wide in fear but also determination. For some reason, the beast was scarier when it had been unknown - a killer somewhere in the mist of the abandoned town. Now that Chiyo could see it right in front of her, it was almost as if the mystery had been solved. She lowered the glowstick and quietly turned so that she was once again peeking out at the incredible wolf.
It made Chiyo sad, in a way. A protector of the village, a beast that in any other situation would have been worshiped or deified, was now a mindless killer that she and Bang must exterminate. A small pang of regret flared inside her, but the thought of the dead girl and the memorial laid at the base of the mountain made Chiyo all but forget it. A guardian that killed the people it had once protected was no longer a guardian. This was a kishin egg. Chiyo shook her head, and waited to see how Bang fared in her quest.

Bang’s arms failed in every direction as Chiyo pulled her behind the wall. She had managed to not scream her head off on surprise. She calmed herself down and popped her head around the wall as well to look at the best. It was still asleep and that was a good thing for them. The element of surprise was on their side at the moment as Bang eyes the monster up. The thing was huge and if it wasn’t a Kishin egg she would have asked if she could bring it home with her. The marking looked so amazing but Bang had to push that into the back of her mind. This thing had killed an innocent girl and that was something Bang couldn’t forgive.
Her eyes moved to Chiyo as she spoke and she wanted to point out that she looked like a ghost with the glow stick so close to her face but now was not the time. Bang had her game face on as she gave her mister a node of her head.
”Wait here and get ready for me. As soon as I break a few glow stick on that thing I will be hauling ass back to you.”
She took a little bit of a breath as she moved out from behind the wall. The last Kishin she had seen she had bit on the shoulder to save a woman. This one was a whole new experience. Bang’s eyes kept moving to the floor as she walked to make sure she didn’t step on anything as she got closer to the beast. If this thing woke up on her she had a backup plan and was the pull her rockets out on her back and fly the fuck away from it but she hoped she wouldn’t need to do that.
Bang had gotten closer to it now, so close that she could feel and smell the things breath. Now was she chance. Bang didn’t hesitate as she broke three glow stick on her hand. They made a very loud cracking noise and she knew that they would. As soon as the liquid in the stick started to seep from their holder Bang threw them at the sleeping dog. She was one hundred percent sure that would wake the sleeping Kishin so she wasted no time as she turned back around and haled ass back to where Chiyo was.
”Crapcrapcrapcrapcrap!!”
She didn’t even fully round the wall before she jumped into the air her body surrounded by a flash of bright light. She turned into her rocket launcher and waited for Chiyo to catch her.

The wolf did not stir at their presence, at least not for now. The softness of their voices and the gentle scuff of shoes over dampened ground weren’t enough to warrant a reaction. One of the beast’s ears twitched, cocking back before relaxing into place. Even as the rocket launcher drew closer, it slept on. Its nose twitched slightly but the wolf did no wake. Slow, deep breaths echoed throughout the empty warehouse, all other sound consisting of the Weapon creeping along and the subtle drip of water condensing on broken glass and running down sagging walls. The cracking of the glow sticks were what woke it. Ears jutting back, it listened intently, attempting to judge what had caused the noise and whether or not it was worth waking up for. It caught their scents and its eyes cracked open, brilliant gold and glowing. Feeling the glowing liquid seep into its fur and spying the Weapon high tailing it back to her Meister, it let out a low growl that shook the room. Its entire body shifted, raising its head first before rocking up onto its feet and shaking. Brilliant dots of the contents of the glow sticks spattered everywhere, but still clung to the fur. It added oddly to the other markings of the Kishin Egg and would indeed come in handy for keeping track of it. Clearly displeased, the low growl turned into a snarl. The wolf bared its teeth, eyes narrowing as it spotted the Weapon turn into such. Its fur bristled, its tail held low and straight behind it. It crouched low to the ground, each footstep causing the rotting walls to rock and shudder. This would not do for a battle ground, but then the wolf had every intention of leaving, as soon became obvious. Its movements were fluid and swift as it reared back before charging forward, heading right for Chiyo and Bang. The Kishin Egg didn’t strike out for them with teeth or claws, at least not yet. The rotting wall received the blunt of its attack. It rammed its head right into the side opposite where the team had been lurking, aiming to crush and hinder them with splinters and flying wooden boards. With any luck they’d be knocked down all together if they didn’t prove fast enough. Stepping gracefully out of the way of the wreckage, the wolf stood by as the ware house began to creak, leaning before collapsing in on itself. Snorting it tilted its head skyward towards the clouds and unleashed a mighty howl that echoed through the misty mountains. The Kishin Egg was indeed as giant as Kaede had described, even more so now standing upright. It straightened its back and held its head low to the ground, staring, watching for movement and still growling. It was hungry.

As soon as Bang rounded the corner, Chiyo was ready, crouching, prepared to spring forward in a sprint. She caught the rocket launcher around her arm, tucking it under her arm safely, and hauled herself away from the concrete wall just as the Kishin egg rammed it. The shock wave from the impact caused Chiyo to stumble, but she rallied as gracefully as if it was a dance and spun around, swinging Bang over her shoulder as if to shoot the Kishin in the face, but a sudden, splintering crack made Chiyo look up instead.
<<It's collapsing!>> She yelled, forgetting to speak in English, and turned and ran for the door. She leaped over a breaking beam, ducking under the leaning doorway and tripped as she cleared the building, sending herself sprawling into the dirty pond just outside the entrance, Bang skittering over the muddy grass to her left. Chiyo tried to ignore the muck and cold that was seeping into her skin, pulling herself out of the brackish pond and running over to her Demon Weapon and settling her back over her shoulder. She ran as fast as she could, feeling her skirt dripping with the pond water, the muddy water running down her legs like cold slime, and slid into a bush, bang held over her shoulder still as she laid on her stomach and waited for the Kishin Egg. She vaguely realized she had lost her headband in the confusion of the collapsing building, but put it out of her mind.
She had disappeared not a moment to soon - the Kishin Egg howled, a chilling sound that echoed around the empty town, and Chiyo could barely make out the monster in the mist - except for the cluster of bright glowing dots on its fur, which Chiyo could see with almost perfect clarity. She whispered a "good job" to her partner, hoping Bang understood she meant the glowstick job, at the same time wondering how long she'd be able to hide. She didn't have a very good shot laying down, so she'd have to stand and hope for the best.
The kishin egg was growling loudly, its head down, but Chiyo had ducked off hard to the left - the kishin was looking forward, for the time being. Chiyo slowly, slowly, began to inch forward, glad her glowstick was hidden under her shirt and her outfit was color neutral. When she had inched her way out of the bushes, she rose so that one knee was flat against the ground, her other knee bent at 90 degrees with her foot flat on the ground. After she pulled the trigger, she'd have to run - and fast.
Best not think about it.
Chiyo pulled the trigger, the rocket launcher booming and the kick sending Chiyo staggering on her back. She didn't want to see if she had hit the Kishin, instead grabbing Bang, ducking the Demon Rocket Launcher under her arm once more, and running as fast as she could for the center of the town. If she could make it into the apartments, maybe she could hide for long enough to be able to line up another shot.

Bang was now in her weapon form and was floating somewhere high above her soul scape. She could hear the music playing below her but played no attention to it rather Bang was staring face to face with her grinning bomb of a soul. She had learned from past experience that the wick on the soul liked to go out at the worst times and would cause her to blow up in her msiter’s arms because one that would just be rude and two it could get them in some serious danger. Bang was unaware for a moment that the building was collapsing around them till her she hear Chiyo yell something in Japanese. Bang took her eyes away from her soul, the wick was long they had time, and turned her attention up to where she could her Chiyo.
”WHAT THE SHIT IT’S MY JOB TO DESTROY BUILDING!”
Yes Bang like yelling at the Kishen will get it to stop doing ‘your’ job. But bang tumbled in her state as Chiyo ran with her and dropped her sending her skidding away. Before she could cry out to her mister she was back in her arms once again and knowing what to do now she loaded a rocket for Chiyo.
”Punch it!”
Bang felt the rocket leave her and she knew what to do from here as Chiyo began to run again. Bang held out her hands and closed her eyes and concentrated. She didn’t have to hit the damn thing she just needed to be close and lucky for the both of them Bang had slight control on where her rockets went to. Thought someone times it would backfire and the rocket would go flying for in a random direction but not this time. The rocket hit is mark near but not on the Kishen. As the weapon exploded with Chiyo’s energy a mushroom cloud formed with a big grinning sharked tooth face on it. Look all too much like the face on Bang’s soul. Bang turned her attention back to Chiyo now.
”Chiyo remember Chiyo I’m a rocket launcher you don’t have to get spot on you just have to get close to the damn thing and even if you are off I can correct the rocket.”
This seemed like very useful information to give to her meister. Chiyo seemed like the type of girl that might be a little anal about her shot but as the hold saying goes close only counts in horse shoes and hand grenades, and Bang was close enough to one of those to count.

The wolf settled but was by no means relaxed. Raising its head, it sniffed the air, snorting as it failed to catch a proper scent of the intruders. There was too much dampness in the air. The mist was interfering, just as the ugly green glow sticking to its fur would make this far it far too easy to track. The Creature tried shaking again, but to no avail. What was left of the stuff was stuck on good. It snorted, clear in its displeasure before it turned its glowing gaze to its surroundings. They had to be somewhere. It could still smell them, even if it couldn’t use that scent well enough to determine just where they were hiding. It heard shuffling and its ears cocked backwards, head tilting to the side. Where? Taking a slow step back, its head was still kept low to the ground, a growl resounding deep in the wolf’s throat. It didn’t have time for games. It had a job to do, and their reluctance to face it one on one was only delaying this. It paused, sticking its nose close to the ground. Nothing. Damned damp earth. Its ears at least didn’t fail to clue it in to the shot as it was fired. The wolf turned to see a rocket flying towards it. Its eyes narrowed, a more threatening sound leaving it as the creature hunkered down and back to put most of its weight on its haunches. What was that? Not fully recognizing just what was flying towards it, the wolf unfortunately was paused in its task long enough and taken completely off guard as it exploded all too near it. The blast had it yelping more out of surprise than pain, though that followed. It knocked the beast back a ways and rendered it highly disoriented, bits of fur flying. As it shook its head and regained its footing, glowing eyes opened again to find the running figure making good its escape into the mists back towards the town. A feral snarl left the now enraged creature as it charged after them. The mist made it difficult for it to see, but it managed to catch their scent on the gentle winds bringing the fog. It was right on their tail, and gaining. Heavy paws made dents in the moist earth and shook the ground, the glow on its fir permeating the mist well enough to let them know just where it was in pursuit behind the team. Its eyes were fixed on them, the wolf following each move they made. They weren’t getting away. It wouldn’t let them escape. They were not welcome here.

As Chiyo ran, the mist began to thicken, obscuring her vision. She felt panic rise, but it was beat down by Bang's newest information - she could control her rockets. It made Chiyo feel a little better about the lack of visibility. It meant they were still in control. Chiyo didn't respond, but she tucked the information away in her mind, focusing on running.
The rocket had exploded right on cue, and had hit its target from the sound of growling, but it had only given Chiyo a couple of seconds head start. She could feel the Kishin Egg's eyes following her, marking her movements, and that would be unsettling enough if it wasn't for the heavy footfalls that made the earth shudder. The Kishin was pursuing the team, and Chiyo was frightened.
She was running on pure instinct now, forgetting her plan to make towards the apartments until she saw them materialize in front of her, slamming into her vision out of the mist. Chiyo readjusted her hold on Bang, running full tilt into the wooden door, which buckled under her weight and crumbled inward at her touch. It was slimy and moist from water damage and disrepair, but Chiyo's internal cleanliness meter had been shoved into the background. She didn't have time to worry about touching moldering surfaces.
By her logic, the Kishin was hot on her trail. It was following her. It would look for her. Let it look, she thought, her lips pressing together in a grim line as she kicked open the door to the emergency stairwell. She didn't even look around the dilapidated old apartment fixtures, only focusing on climbing the stairs, foot in front of the other, ignoring the burning in her lungs until she reached the third floor.
The doors here were mostly locked, but some had been left open, and the apartments proper were messy and full of signs that the town had been abandoned suddenly. Chiyo stomped into the first open room she saw, throwing the sliding glass door open and positioning Bang Bang on her shoulder.
"Aim for eye or mouth," she gasped out loud so Bang could hear. And she waited. Every muscle in her body wanted to fire the rocket launcher now, but she made herself calm. You're onstage, she lied to herself. Be calm, Chiyo. steady. Dance like you've always done.
She forced her breathing to be even and waited for the Kishin to fall upon them. The closer, the better.
She was going to send the rocket right down the monster's throat.

Bang punched the air with joy as she heard and felt her rocket go off. She was very proud of her explosive for listening to her but the joy was soon washed away as she felt Chiyo begin to run. Bang looked out from her soul scape and saw the enormous dog chasing after them. Her heart began to race as she looked to her meister. She had to stay in her weapon form it was much faster for Chiyo to carry her but Bang could see the worry on her face. Bang had already faced down a Kishin egg before, hell she bit the damn thing, she was scared of the dog. No what Bang was scared of was the safety of her mister. There was no more time for her to be Bang Bang at the moment she had to put her game face on. She had to be calm for Chiyo.
As the made their way into the decrypted building Bang’s heart began to race again. Okay good idea to get away from the dog however bad idea to have a rocket go off in here. One misfire by Bang and the whole damn place might come down on them. Keeping that in mind Bang turned her eyes downward now to look at her all too explosive souls. She gave a little sigh of relief because the wick on the bomb was still a good length and wasn’t burning yet but she knew all too well that could change in a heartbeat and it would put both girls at risk.
Her attention was brought back to Chiyo as she heard her speak. Loading a new rocket Bang made it ever so slightly small than the last. A rocket to the mouth will to damage no matter the size she was more worried about the damn thing getting knocked away and blowing up the whole stair well.
”You got it Chiyo. Keep calm we are doing just fine!”
Bang ready herself for the moment that damn dog made its face know. As soon as that rocket left the barrel she would do as Chiyo said and would try to direct the rocket to hit it in the mouth. But Chiyo would have to be calm and have a steady aim for a shot like that. Bang could only move her rocket a little Chiyo would have to send it on the right path to begin with.

As the team tumbled inside their temporary cover, the wolf grumbled and skidded to a halt. Growling, the creature bowed down to peer through the broken door. The Meister was quick though. It caught no sight of her making for the stairwell, but the Kishin Egg knew that she had to be in there somewhere. It just had to flush her out. A puff of its breath added to the fog before dissipating as it rose back to its full height, prowling slowly around the edge of the building. This would potentially be problematic.
Not knowing just where the team had gone, the wolf kept itself low to the ground, peering into windows and open walls. The rooms were battered looking and cold, screens having fallen over the years and the tatami mats coated in mold and mildew. The creature moved slowly, looking with its eyes only for the moment, though it could still clearly smell them nearby. Where in the building were they hiding? It paced slowly, reaching the end of one side of the building before doubling back. This time it lifted its head, nose to the sky as it looked into the window of the second story. It was most difficult, having to hop occasionally in a way that almost made it look like the wolf was prancing since the top of its head only barely broke two stories tall.
From above it heard the sound of a door and halted, a low growl rumbling deep its in throat. It bared its teeth just a ted, turning in circles below. They were up there. It circled once more before back pedaling a ways, and then the wolf hurled itself full-throttle into the side of the building. Old concrete managed to stand, but the foundation still shook, sending beams falling from the ceiling and knocking doors off their hinges. It stood up on its hind legs, paws reaching as high as they would go and leaving deep grooves in the building’s outer walls where its claws scratched. Windows broke, sending glass flying inwards.
It relented for a few moments only to repeat its actions, ramming itself into the side of the building. It couldn’t keep doing it. If something fell on them within then it would go hungry. It needed to be cautious. The wolf aimed to drive them out. Pausing below the wolf turned its head towards the sky and howled in frustration, rearing back on its haunches as it voiced its complaints to the misty mountains all around. The mist was growing thicker, the outline of the wolf’s body growing less visible below, but the glow of its fur coming through loud and clear even through the fog.

The concrete floor beneath her shook, and Chiyo staggered back as she tried to gain her footing once more, tucking Bang under her arm as she knelt down, one arm covering her head.
The force of the wolf barreling into the side of the apartments wasn't enough to break the balcony off, but glass shattered in windows and Chiyo could hear the snapping and creaking of beams as they fell from the impact.
The Kishin wasn't tall enough, even on its hind legs, to clear the third story, but Chiyo could still see it right underneath them as she grabbed a hold of the railing as the wolf pushed at the building again with it's paws, scarring the side and leaving huge gashes in the side of the wall.
Wait.
Chiyo gritted her teeth, carefully standing and readying Bang on her shoulder. The foundation still shook underneath her, but she could see the top of the Kishin's head.
The mist is gathering, Chiyo noticed, a wave of alarm coursing through her, but she thought of Bang's words earlier and forced herself to be calm.
I'm not alone. I have help. We can do this.
She thought of the memorial at the entrance of the village. The picture of the girl who had died.
Chiyo felt her blood boil.
<<I don't care if you're the guardian of this village or not,>> she hissed, feeling her hands stop shaking as she closed one eye and aimed. <<My partner and I will protect it. We'll kill the monster.>>
The wolf pushed off the building, settling on its haunches. It threw it's head up.
As the Kishin opened its mouth and began to howl, Chiyo slammed her foot onto the railing of the balcony and pointed the rocket launcher directly down, steadying herself.
Chiyo's finger began to squeeze the trigger.
"Goodbye."
she pulled the trigger.
In a blast of fire and smoke, and with a mighty BANG!, a rocket was sent spiraling right toward the Kishin's open mouth. It's trajectory was clear - even though the fog was now becoming thicker, Chiyo was close enough to the beast to see right down it's throat. If the Kishin didn't move, if it didn't move fast enough, the rocket would land inside of the giant monster and hopefully make quick work of it.
If not, she'd feel silly. That was a pretty good final speech, in her opinion.
