Bright blue skies covered the expanse of the city and hide any sign of anything sinister happening within the confines. The streets were filled with multitudes of tourist who went about their day oblivious to the recent happenings. Around the airport in particular were plentiful crowds of people that would make the students arrival that much shorter. After breaking through the throngs of tourist they could begin the search for the meeting place. 51 rue de Montmorency was a bit of a walk from the airport but the team would have the pleasure of finding a car awaiting them. Outside stood a man in a suit holding up a sign with the word Shibusen clearly visible. Not having to worry about any language barriers with that the man would drive them to the meeting location. The drive wouldn’t take long but it would have been much longer of a walk. As the streets and sights of Paris passed them by the team could see how the city was dealing with a possible kishin in its midst. That was to say pretty well. Not a single person they passed to have even the slightest clue that something may be amiss. Soon enough the car would come to a stop and the driver would open the door for the team. Outside of the car was a restaurant that looked rather old. A sign hanging on the building read Auberge Nicolas Flamel and was the appointed place to meet their contact. Inside was a rather fancy looking restaurant illuminated with chandeliers and other classical lighting fixtures. A few people were eating their meals like normal but over in a corner was a huddled party of police. In the middle of their gathering sat a man fitting the description of the witness. Short brown hair, average brown eyes, wearing a heavier jacket than befit the season. Most notable abou him was his one gloved hand and the look of stress and exhaustion plain on his face. Sleep was not something he had gotten much of and now he was subject to this. He seemed cooperative enough with the police but his strain was visible.

It was hard to imagine that anything evil was going on in a city so beautiful on a day so nice, but as the car threaded its way down the Parisian streets, Nathaniel could feel a sense of...not evil, but that deep down, something was wrong here. He wondered if it simply nerves about this his first mission, or indicative of a larger, more sinister gut feeling. Looking over at his partner, he wondered if she was as nervous as he was. It was one thing to dream about fighting Kishin Eggs and wielding a weapon, but practice in a gym was different than the actual life-or-death scenario they were getting into. Saying a small prayer for luck as the car rolled to a stop, Nathaniel hoped nothing too horrible would happen.
He tugged at the leather collar necklace he always wore. For the mission, he had decided not to dress as he usually did. Function over fashion. He had on a simple jacket and button-up with a tie, dressed down with straight-legged jeans and comfortable shoes. He did have on his choker and all his earrings in, but he had forgone rings for today. Best not to have too much to jangle around. Plus, wielding a scythe with rings on would be slightly uncomfortable, and he didn't need that disadvantage today. His hair remained spiked, though. He couldn't completely abandon his carefully cultivated image.
The blond shimmied out of the car, thanking the driver, making sure to hold the door open for Arlie. It was nice to stretch his legs after the flight. Economy class was not exactly built for people his size, and the car ride had been less cramped but not by much. He took a moment to shake his legs out, surveying the scene as he did so. The car had stopped outside an old-looking restaruant, presumably where the team would meet up with the contact. Nathaniel had taken a long time going over the details of the mission, but he still felt unprepared. Auberge Nicolas Flamel, just like they had been told. Exhaling audibly, Nathaniel closed the car door and turned to Arlie.
"So. In we go?" He asked, waiting for her to confirm. He liked his partner a lot, but she could get distracted easily. He didn't want her running off to the shops on either side of the restaurant, not right now. There would be time to sight-see after the mission - that is, if everything went well. But best not to think of those things! Positive thoughts! Visualize yourself doing well, and you would do well, as the health and wellness magazines he had read in the airport had said. He had to have faith that everything was going to turn out okay. No sense in dooming them before they even get started!

Paris! Arlie knew that and Nate would probably get to travel to all kinds of fantastic and faraway places for their missions, but Paris! And right out of the gate, too! It seemed like such a marvelous place to have their first mission in. She had thought she’d be too excited to sleep on the plane, but she’d wound up spending the flight asleep and in dreams anyway. She woke up only just before they landed and had taken to looking out the window again. Wow, what a view! She’d never been on a plane before. Her father had driven her the whole way to Death City from Fort Worth since Nevada wasn’t too far from Texas after all, but dang! What an experience it was to be so high up in the air! Excited though she was, there was just a twinge of nerves that had her a bit…off. She was still her happy go lucky self, but she was fidgeting all over the place and while her main compulsion was to wander off into the crowds in amongst the airport and again outside, she kept looking at Nate to make sure he was still right next to her like a child would look to a parent for confidence. So she was a little nervous, so what? Her excitement to be out and about fighting evil with Nate definitely overshadowed and hid it well. Besides, once they got going everything would fall into place! The blonde’s face was plastered to the window for the entirety of the car ride. There was so much to see just from a window! Arlie had never seen a city so busy and full of lights! It looked completely different from Fort Worth and it was definitely different from Death City. Everything looked so bright and sophisticated. Arlie was in total awe of how beautiful it all was. But they weren’t here to see the sights, they were here to fight a Kishin Egg. Arlie still kept her eyes on the many interesting buildings and things to see out the window, but did try to adopt a more serious state of mind. She and Nate could do all the fun stuff later! First they needed to find what was hurting people and put a stop to it! Arlie kicked her feet somewhat impatiently when the car stopped before scooting along and following Nate out, thanking the driver as well as her partner since he held the door for her. Nate was such a gentleman! Stretching her arms over her head, Arlie had a big sunny grin on her face. She was so pumped up! They hadn’t even started and she already felt like punching the air. Of course she’d be in her Weapon form since Nate would be doing the fighting, but that made her even more excited in a way. She finally had somebody to wield her! It was an adventure and Arlie was loving it so far. They hadn’t even started, and she was over the moon. Auberge Nicolas Flamel. Arlie nodded with purpose. Yup, this was where they were supposed to be. Hearing the breath Nate let out, the blonde turned her eyes on him. Giving him a warm, reassuring smile and a gentle nudge in the side, she nodded at the door, “Dun be nervous, Nate. We’ll send that varmint packin’!”Linking arms with her Weapon, Arlie pointed at the door with purpose before marching forward, “Now come on! Aaaaaadventure time!”Ah, well, inside sure was fancier than Arlie had expected. The blonde felt a bit underdressed if anything, but her determination and excitement didn’t waver. She and Nate had a contact to meet and a job to do. Pausing only briefly to take a look around, Arlie spotted the group of cops almost immediately. Tugging lightly on Nate’s sleeve, Arlie nodded at them, “Ten bucks says that guy o’er yonder with all them badges is who we’re lookin’ fer! Come on, let’s go say howdy.”Looking up at the chandeliers if only to bask in the sparkle for a moment, Arlie then kept walking towards the group in the corner, being careful to weave around tables and not run into any waiters. Coming to a stop beside them, she waved to the group and gave them a confident grin, “Howdy! We’re students from Shibusen. What seems to be the problem, officers?”

When the team entered the restaurant the chime of a bell could be heard from above them. The sudden opening of the door caught the attention of the police officers but they quickly returned to the man they were questioning. Even if the Shibusen team was supposed to be meeting them in the restaurant but they had no description of what they looked like. Believing the two new patrons of the restaurant to simply be a couple of tourist the officers paid them no mind. There were more pressing matters than what a few tourists were eating for lunch.
They were proven wrong when Arlie bounded over to them and began to speak. Being such a prominent area for tourist all the officers knew how to speak English. Even if that wasn’t the case the mention of Shibusen was enough to confirm any suspicions the officers had. One officer close to the witness was an older gentleman and sat up at the student’s arrival. Giving the two a quick look over he cleared his throat before addressing the team.
”Bonjour, I am the one in charge here. I take it you two are the team from Shibusen? This here is the witness, Charles.
His accent was thick but his words understandable. The other officers gave the man some space and he looked around somewhat nervously. Charles tapped the fingers of his left hand against the table nervously and looked around before moving his gaze to the team of students. Gloved hand resting on the table he calmed his breath before speaking.
”Bonjour, Yes I did see…whatever that was. Please let me do whatever I can to help…I would feel much better without having to worry about…that.”
Plainly shaken by the events Charles seemed willing to help, if more so out of fear than good will. At least the students had some sort of lead as to where to begin searching for the kishin egg lurking in the city. Charles closed his eyes and muttered to himself silently in French before taking a deep breath and looking at the team.
”If you have any questions I can try to help though I didn’t see much of it, as I have told the officers here.”

Sighing and following his partner, Nathaniel kept a close eye on her as he threaded through the restaurant. It was much more upscale than he had anticipated, even though he had done some reading on the meeting place before hand, but he felt awkward and in the way, especially when people looked. He focused on following Arlie. He didn't have time to waste feeling small under the stares of people.
His partner's sharp eyes spotted the group of cops and the contact and greeted them cheerfully, something Nathaniel admired. If she was nervous, she certainly didn't look it, something that put him at ease a little.
Nathaniel cleared his throat and addressed the witness, Charles after the policeman introduced him. "Don't worry, we're here to help. Our job is to hunt whatever you saw, and we appreciate your cooperation," Nathaniel said in the most reassuring voice he could manage, although he was talking somewhat stiffly out of nerves. Taking a deep breath, Nathaniel then began his formal questions he had prepared beforehand. "If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could tell us exactly what you saw, to the best of your ability? And, uh, sorry to trouble you about it, but we're also interested in where you saw...whatever it was. Oh, and please note the time and date of the sighting," he added politely. Nathaniel hoped it wasn't too much to ask at one time. He'd never done this sort of thing before, although he'd seen crime dramas on TV. The cops were usually direct but gentle - he hoped he had come across similarly.
Nathaniel would have hated to be rude, but to this man especially - he looked worn and scared and tired. What had he seen that had frightened him so? Nathaniel had never seen a Kishin Egg, but he had only a vague idea about their impact. They had been told at Shibusen that Kishin were a force of great evil, but their vile nature was abundantly clear though this man's behavior. It made it sort of realer, somehow.
The blonde turned to Arlie. "Do you have any other questions for him?" He asked quietly. "Just to get them all out there." Sometimes presenting what happened in bold fact made a person less afraid. To name the fear was to lessen the power it held over you, as his mother sometimes said. Maybe discussing what had happened to Charles in objective fact would make the poor man less afraid.

Arlie nodded at the officer as he introduced the witness, her grey gaze instantly upon him. The poor thing looked quite the mess, she had to say. The blonde wasn’t entirely sure if he was so nervous because of what he’d seen or because of the rather large group of policemen surrounding him, but either way she hoped their presence made him feel at least a little bit safer. If not, then they’d just have to find a way to fix that! They were here to help after all! Releasing the grip she had on her partner’s arm, Arlie stood by his side and let him ask his questions first. Nate seemed to have an idea of what to say. Apart from the greeting Arlie…really didn’t.
It wasn’t because she wasn’t focused, not at all! It probably had something to do with her immediate want to comfort the witness, but then again hugging strangers wasn’t exactly something everyone thought was alright. The blonde didn’t know if they did that in France, plus she didn’t want to be pushy so she stayed put. Arlie’s eyes wandered around the room, taking in her surroundings. It may have looked like she was spacing out, but she was indeed listening to what Nate said. After all, she needed to so she wouldn’t repeat a question he’d already asked. That’d just be embarrassing!
Arlie’s gaze moved to her partner as he asked her a question. Shifting her weight onto one hip and staring intently at the floor, the blonde thought for a moment. Questions, questions…there had to be something she could ask that would be constructive. However she wasn’t the best thinker, not by a long shot. Nate had pretty much covered everything, not that she minded at all. That just meant she’d have less to worry about. All she’d have to do was listen, and she was fine with that, however there was one thing. Looking up at the poor man, Arlie tried to give him a grin that would reassure him, not so much bright as it was gentle,
“I guess this could tie into my partner’s questions, but based on where you saw this thing do you have any guesses as to where it might be lurkin’ now?”
It was small, but it was all the blonde could think of. Once she’d asked it, she did turn her head to glance up at her partner. She was looking for reassurance that she hadn’t just said something stupid and had actually added to the whole conversation and act of information getting. The grin didn’t disappear, not at all, but her nerves were starting to show a bit.

Charles didn’t seem any less panicked but he did seem to try and relax. They needed to know what he saw of course. That was why he was here in the first place. At least after he told them they could go and get rid of whatever that thing was and Paris would be a safer place for him and others. Taking in a deep breath Charles exhaled and looked up at the students. The male was the first to speak so his attention was mainly on him as he spoke.
”Yes alright. It was dark but I saw a shadowy man-like figure walking down an alleyway. He looked like he was in a trench coat and had something over his shoulder. He didn’t look that menacing but very suspicious. I wasn’t going to do anything but he turned and I saw there was long hair on what he was carrying. I thought it was some unconscious girl so I followed him. ”
His accent remained thick but his English otherwise was near perfect. Looking at the police officers, Arlie, and the rest of the restaurant occasionally he didn’t seem to like focusing on one singular object. Closing his eyes he muttered to himself again before opening them to continue talking.
”This was…about a week ago. Probably around midnight when I was walking home from work. It wasn’t that far from here actually…I think I had just passed the St-Gervais-et-St-Protais Church. The figure turned and I followed it to try and stop it. I should have just called the cops but it looked like a relatively older man so I didn’t expect any problems… ”
Again he paused to recollect his thoughts. He had told the police all this before and with each recollection he grew more unnerved by his own story. Meeting here did nothing to help his nerves but it was an easy spot to find and would be a closer location for the students to start from than a police station. It would have been a waste to drag them out to unnecessary places like that if it only delayed their mission. Tapping his ungloved hand on the table he returned to his story.
”After we were down the alleyway I called out to him. The man…figure…whatever it was didn’t stop but kept walking so I sped up to confront it. That was when it threw the…substance at me. I fell to the ground in pain after that and it got away. I walked down to the end of the alley after I could but there was only a wall back there. It was late and my hand was…afterwards so I hurried out after to get the police. That’s all I know, sorry.”
Looking somewhat sad he wished he could give more to the students who would go after such a thing willingly. Suddenly having a thought Charles reached and pulled off his glove. The back of his hand up to his wrist and nearly the tips of his fingers was incased in what looked like sliver. The metal looked solid and bubbles or blisters could be seen under it. Showing his hand to the students Charles shook it to show that it was a solid layer of silver on his hand. ”This is what happened after he threw the liquid at me. I don’t understand it but it turned into this…silver-like thing. Please be careful if you go after that.”
Replacing the glove Charles looked to see if they had any other questions. He had told them all he knew but if they still asked for more he would try the best he could. Sending children after what had done this to him seemed rather foolish but they were the experts on this sort of thing.

Gaping at the silver arm before him, Nathaniel felt his stomach turn. Was it fear? No, it was less visceral. It was more like sudden dread.
"The St-Gervais-et-St-Protein Church?" He repeated, unaware of his mistake. It was the best lead they had, and if the Kishin Egg was skulking around there still it would be a perfect place to start looking. What was most concerning was the liquid that had coated poor Charles' arm. Had it burnt through his clothing? Was he still able to move his fingers? Nathaniel knew just swinging the scythe wouldn't protect him or Arlie against it - what would happen if the silver substance coated her as a weapon? Would she be able to change back? There were too many questions bouncing around his head, but Nathaniel was loathe to bother Charles more. The man was frightened and upset as it was. These questions were too nit-picky anyways. It was best to just avoid the substance altogether, and not worry about it.
Instead of asking any of these questions, Nathaniel excused himself. "If I could have a moment with my partner? Just a second, I promise..."
He gently but firmly led Arlie around to the back of the restaurant near the kitchens, where he could keep an eye in the table but far enough away for them to talk safely. The conversational buzz of the restaurant was more than adequate to disguise their voices.
"Something seems really weird about this," Nathaniel said quietly. "Don't you think he would know what the silver stuff was? Don't people usually go to the hospital after things like that occur?" The fact that the substance remained an unknown danger bothered him. "It might just be an overreaction, though. In any case, we should be on the lookout for projectiles," he added. Thinking for a moment, he said, "I don't really know what else to ask besides really tiny detail questions. Do you want to ask him anything else?" Maybe Arlie had other questions that would shed some light on the mysterious situation they now faced.

Arlie stood and listened to Charles speak patiently, her best attempt at a serious expression present on her face. It was odd to see the blonde without a smile, but this was no time to be cheerful. She could be as overly confident and shiny as she liked outside once she and Nate were out looking for the thing. The smile could come back then, even if its only purpose for now would be to hide her growing insecurity of how well they were going about this whole mission thing. Oh, she hoped they were doing good so far. Information gathering wasn’t that hard, right?
St-Gervais-et-St-Protais Church. That was quite the mouthful, but Arlie did her best to memorize it. She was good at things like that, and she was sure that the church would also be where they started looking given how this man spoke. An older man carrying a woman? That certainly was ominous. To make matters worse, there seemed to be some volatile substances involved. Arlie really didn’t like the sound of that, and her feeling of being generally ill at ease only grew upon seeing what it had done to the man’s hand. Dang, that stuff really wasn’t coming off. The blonde bit the inside of her lip and tried not to fidget, but she had her hands clasped so hard in front of her that her knuckles were turning white. What in tarnation was that stuff to hang onto skin like that? Arlie wasn’t so sure she wanted to find out.
The blonde was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she hadn’t even heard Nate excuse them. She only felt him guiding her away, causing her to blink and lance back at the officers before looking to her partner,
“Nate?”
He must have been worried about something Charles had said. Arlie herself was worried about most of it, if not all of it, but she was trying her very best to downplay that. Nate was very obviously nervous; it wouldn’t do for him to know that she was in the very same boat as him. She didn’t need him fussing over her. His suspicions of the metal substance did seem well founded in a way, but Arlie didn’t really share them. He was just their contact after all; he was there to give them information. Shrugging her shoulders, Arlie appeared genuinely stumped,
“Maybe he did already? Nate you saw that poor man’s hand, that stuff ain’t comin’ off without some kinda divine intervention as far as I can see. If they dun know what it is, they can’t exactly make it come off if their best plan’s just to yell at it and hope it jumps off his skin.”
An odd metaphor, but then this was Arlie. She did agree that watching for any flying silvery stuff was definitely on the list of top priorities. She did not fancy any of that stuff coming her way, and God forbid it got on Nathan. She’d throw herself in front of him before any of it touched him if that happened. No way was she letting her Meister get hit by that vile stuff! As far as more questions went, the blonde was running on empty. She shook her head, making the curls of her ponytail bounce about and hit the sides of her face,
“Not a thing, honeybunch. Maybe our best bet now is to just start lookin’? We ain’t gonna find this thing lurkin’ under the tables here, after all.”
She gave him a gentle smile, hoping to make him feel a bit more at ease. Arlie wanted with all her heart to just tell him not to worry so much, but that would only make her a hypocrite. She herself was as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. It didn’t help that the Kishin Egg sounded about as friendly as fire ants, but that was to be expected. They could handle it, she knew that and believed it, she and Nate just had to find it first.

Charles and the officers made no move to stop the team as they went off to converse amongst themselves. The officers all seemed somewhat bothered by something while they sat. One may assume it was the lack of progress the case had made or that children from Shibusen had to be called in to take care of it. Either way the officers were not in the greatest mood and that only added to the nervousness that Charles was feeling. He sat and waited until he could leave this place and return to his house where he felt somewhat safer. Every so often he would look out the window as if to see if the thing that attacked him was outside waiting.
Outside things continued on as any normal day in Paris. Tourist flooding the streets and merchants out trying to take advantage of them. Sun shining in the sky covering up any feeling of dread most people would feel if they didn’t know about the monster in the city. Now that the team had been inserted into the hidden case in the city the fate of all the people in it fell to them. Considering the cop’s ability to do nothing any future attacks would be on the students.
The door of the restaurant opened and a pair of tourist walked inside. The two gawked at the building and muttered about the history of it before heading off to take a seat away from the group. Charles had paled upon the ringing of the door’s bell and was starting to calm down. He glanced at the students with a pleading look on his face. Not saying anything his face conveyed what he was thinking. Please take care of this, for me and any other victims. Having a thought Charles stuttered and spoke up.
”O-One more thing! The woman looked alive so maybe…maybe the people aren’t dead that the thing took.”
He was trying to be helpful but his own nervousness ruined him. It was true that the woman looked alive and wasn’t just a corpse that was being carried. Plus when he looked there was no blood around him, the two were just gone. He hoped she was and any others were so he could be helpful to them in a roundabout way.

Shuffling back to the table, it seemed that Charles had one thing left to say to the two students.
Nathaniel noddded, slowly, eyes growing wide. "Time is of the essence, then," he said, stating rather the obvious. "We promise we'll find what took those people, Charles. Officers," he said as a goodbye, giving them a polite nod. Charles had given them a starting point, and they'd be wise to move quickly. Now that they had a more direct goal - keep the woman, and any others the kishin had taken, alive - Nathaniel was anxious to get going. The sooner they found and stopped the kishin, the sooner they could save it's victims, and stop it from taking any more.
He was feeling jumpy, nervous, and worried. If they couldn't make it on time...No! Nathaniel snapped himself out of those thoughts. Think positively! They'd find and save everyone. They had to.
Yet...
Something about this whole thing seemed strange to him. Was it just nerves? Probably. Nathaniel mentally shook himself, feeling silly for being so nervous. It was most likely straightforward - find the kishin, kill the kishin, save the citizens. Just as he'd been taught in school. He needed to not overthink this! The situation was dangerous, but jumping to conclusions without proof wouldn't do anyone good, especially if the kishin was taking hostages. They were on a timer, unless the victims had died already. Nathaniel disliked to think of that as an option, though. Positive thoughts!! Next stop, St-Gervais-et-St-Protein Church. He had memorized it incorrectly without realizing, but he knew that if he got something wrong in pronunciation Arlie would correct him. She was much, much better than him at languages.
Looking at his partner, he said, "Shall we go?" If she had any more questions for Charles, now was the time, but Nathaniel was fairly sure all the major concerns had been brought to light. He couldn't think of anything else they needed to ask, but perhaps his partner had thought of something. If not, they were ready to search for the Kishin Egg and ready to bring it down.

Arlie followed her partner closely as they wandered back to the table. Keeping her eyes on the tall beau, she hoped that what she’d said had been of some help to him. She wanted him to feel reassured that they could handle this even if Arlie was currently so worried that her stomach felt like a barrel full of snakes. As they returned, it would seem that Charles had one last thing to tell them.
The blonde visibly stiffened, but nodded her head to show she’d heard. If the woman he’d seen taken was still alive, then she and Nate had better high tail it to the site where the Kishin Egg was last seen. If there was any chance of her still being alive then Arlie aimed to rescue her. Giving a confident smile in spite of her current feeling of anxiety, the blonde gave a slight bow to Charles and spoke gently,
“Thank you very much for yer help, sir. We sure appreciate it!”
Not only did they appreciate it, but they certainly needed it. Even so, there still wasn’t much to go on. That wasn’t Charles’ fault, though. He was a witness, not some Kishin Egg tracking machine, although one of those did sound frightfully useful at the moment. Imagine being able to just flip a switch and follow a tiny robot car that would lead you right to what they were hunting! So useful, but very unlikely. Maybe they’d get lucky and someone would invent one before their next mission.
Tilting her head upwards to look at Nate, Arlie nodded. With her smile still in place she placed her hands on her hips before punching her right fist into the air excitedly,
“I sure am! Let’s hunt ‘im down, partner!”
She was ready to get after this thing, but there was that unshakable knot in her chest that only seemed to get tighter the harder she tried to appear composed. She wouldn’t let uncertainty and fear get the best of her, though! They could do this! She and Nate were going to find that Kishin Egg, rescue that poor woman, and then go have crepes under the Eiffel Tower or something heroic like that.

The team upon leaving the restaurant would find the driver from earlier waiting for them. Giving the best explanation he could the driver said he was to take them to the scene of the crime before departing. It would save the team from having to battle the tourist while trying to walk to the area. The driver like the police knew about the incident even if it was an altered version of the truth. All the man knew was that he was supposed to transport the team to the church before leaving. Opening the doors for them he went out to complete his task.
The drive was quick and mostly filled with the view of people walking along the sides of the road. It didn’t take long for them to reach the church and the car pulled up to park in front of it. Once again getting gout to open the doors for them the driver let them out and said his goodbyes before leaving. Now the team was on their own for the rest of the mission until they had completed it. The stone church stood before them and looked over the buildings around them, the structure being easily noticeable with the white stone pillars that adorned it.
Certainly an imposing structure the church was prominent in the area and the idea of something malicious going on around it seemed almost crazy. The occasional tourist walked past the building engaged in conversation with others or taking photographs of the scenery. Overall the two students failed to stand out amongst the rest of the scene and could pass for a simple group of tourist in the area. Walking toward the side of the church the team would see plentiful trees that the sun shone through and more importantly a long alley.
Bordering along other buildings the path noticeably grew encompassed by shadow as one walked down it. Narrowing inward as the available light lessened it certainly had a somewhat intimidating presence on its own but the knowledge of a kishin egg being near it added to the suspicion and dread it carried. Walking down the two would find nothing out of the ordinary for a back alley, just the occasional garbage and forgotten object, even when the light was covered by the shadows of the surroundings there was nothing that stood out as out of place or dangerous. The odd cat may walk past them or give a meow but that aside there was hardly even a sign of life down the alley.
Reaching the end and by far the darkest part of the alley the team would find nothing that stood out except for the pile of crates at the end. A set of six wooden crates rested in a pyramid shape against the wall that marked the end of the alley, a dead end that matched Charles’ note that he had only found a wall at the end of the alley. Yet somehow the kishin had ventured down the same path and vanished before Charles could locate him. A black cat with a single white spot over one eye sat on the wall and looked down at the team. Its yellow eyes watching them to see what they would do next.

The car ride was uneventful, and Nathaniel kept very quiet, turning over the facts he had heard in his head. The drive flew by, and it seemed they had reached the church in no time at all. Nathaniel climbed out of the car and, thanking the driver, followed Arlie into the alley Charles had spoken of.
It was easy to find. Nathaniel shivered. It was a dark area that made him nervous, and he shoved his hands in his front pockets as he surveyed the area. There was a cat watching them, but Nathaniel paid it only a moment's attention before he continued searching the scene. Although the alley was creepy, there wasn't anything inherently suspicious about it.
Nathaniel mad a beeline for the crates, looking at them critically. Could the kishin have vaulted over the crates and jumped the wall? They were stacked in such a way that it was probable to climb, although they didn't make it to the top. They only went halfway up the brick wall. If someone was tall enough, they could have hauled themselves up and dropped down to the other side. It was a fairly decent distance, but a kishin could probably make it with ease.
Nathaniel frowned and discarded the idea. They wouldn't be able to do that carrying a person, even if they could make it up the height required to get to the top of the wall - unless they had abnormal jumping skills, although considering Charles' testimony, that was probably not the case.
Well, what about behind or under the crates? If they obscured a hole or something, that could easily be an exit strategy. Charles hadn't noted the crates, so they could have not been there at all, or even laying around and then stacked after the incident. Nathaniel frowned. Charles would have likely noticed a hole, but he had said it was dark. Most likely he hadn't taken into account what was near his feet. Maybe there was a trap-door or something similar? Nathaniel nodded, as if agreeing with himself. Might as well try it.
Turning around to Arlie, he jabbed his thumb at the crates. "Hey, Arlie," he called, seeing as she was probably distracted, as she tended to do. Nathaniel didn't mind his partner's distracted nature, but right now he needed her help. "Wanna give me a hand? I just wanna check something super quick."
Nathaniel didn't expect there to be anything, but better safe than sorry.

Arlie wondered if all of their missions would have them being chauffeured around like celebrities! She doubted it, but it was still awfully nice. The blonde’s eyes were once again focused out the window at the passing city streets and people. It was all so beautiful. Sites aside, Arlie’s mind was actually focused on their mission. The silver substance still weighed heavily on her mind as something to be extremely wary of should they encounter it. What’s more, there was the possibility that they had a hostage to rescue and if they didn’t make it in time they would be too late, that is if they weren’t too late already. Arlie hoped they weren’t.
It was a lovely church for certain, but it wasn’t the structure they were to go about searching. The blonde was captivated by the stone building for a moment, her grey eyes flicking over it restlessly before coming to her senses and moving along towards where she should really be. Striding eagerly ahead, she knew that Nate would follow her. The little path felt…wrong. Arlie didn’t like it; in fact the moment she set foot down the darker street she felt a chill run down her spine. Still determined to not let her nerves get the best of her, she kept walking, treading carefully along at a bit of a slower pace, taking in the scene around her.
It didn’t make sense how one little alley could be so much darker than the rest of an entire street. It was so near to everything else, it just didn’t make any sense to her. Still, there wasn’t really anything that made it so unnerving. Arlie still couldn’t shake that feeling of dread that had settled into a knot in her chest. Something just wasn’t quite right, but she couldn’t put her finger on it. Sighing and rubbing her arms to rid herself of a chill that was more perceived than anything, she noticed the black cat spying on them from the wall. It was a cute little thing with just that one spot. Her smile coming back at the sight of the animal, she spoke softly to it,
“Well ain’t you just ten kinds o’ handsome.”
Wait, Nate was talking to her. The crates? Oh right, the crates! Tearing her gaze away from the feline, Arlie wandered over to her partner. Examining the stack, it did seem peculiar that they would be arranged like that just as a random happenstance. What’s more, there could be something hidden beneath or behind them that they couldn’t see. Thinking they didn’t look too tough to move, Arlie nodded and gave her partner a grin,
“Sure thing, honeybunch! Shouldn’t be too much of a task. They’re just wood after all!”
The crates shouldn’t give them too much trouble. With Nate’s height and Arlie’s capability to toss barrels, she doubted the crates would be much of an issue. Oh, she sure hoped there was something behind them! If there wasn’t then they would of course continue their search. Maybe they could look inside the church next if they didn’t find anything.
