”Ashes, ashes...”
That nice witch had said that there was nice places to eat in Sharm. Unfortunately, little Cendrine had never gotten a chance to try any of them. She probably could have, but there was far more interesting things for her to do. So, Cendrine traveled away from that city until she came to the outskirts of a small town. It probably did not have many places to eat, and there was much less people. There was always disappointments when traveling around the world. So Cendrine would just have to suck this up.
”...we all fall...”
Not to say this trip had been a complete loss. Cendrine just wished she had waited a bit longer to go on. Cendrine had met a lovely local farmer who humoured her with accepting her offer to see a magic trick. When Cendrine turned an entire boulder to ash, he was intrigued. But now he was paralyzed in fear.
Rightfully so. Now the ashes were being held above his head. The man had ample time to run away, but didn’t. A lot of people did that. Not everyone, but a lot. Cendrine took this pause as these people calmly waiting for her to conclude her trick. They had yet to get very excited, but that was okay! Cendrine would entertain her friends, like always.
”...down.”
With a flick of her wrist downwards, Cendrine attempted to hurl the ashes which had joined together to create a rock of sorts right on top of the man. Enya had given her the idea. Do that, the person slows down even more to see your next trick! Or something like that. Cendrine hadn’t quite figured out how to use the spell yet. This was the first time she was going to try to use it on an actual person.
Even though the new spell was simple enough in concept, Cendrine had trouble executing it. Now was no exception. Instead of staying as a solid mass, the ashes separated into regular ashes again. Instead of being knocked out, the man was showered in ashes. Now he had the chance to run and took it. ”No, wait!” Cendrine pleaded after him, but the man just ran.
He fled towards the town. Uh oh. This could be bad. With a whine, Cendrine muttered her incantation under her breath again. Instead of making a rock thing, this time she made a sword. Now to just catch up with the man. He must have gotten bored with her to run away like that. Hopefully the guy would trip or something that’d let Cendrine catch up easier...

Zuri felt the intense need to take the long way home.
It may have meant intermittent flying and walking a shifting into an actual hyena, but she would take it. She needed time to think and turn things over in her mind. Of the things to expect of a meeting with a sorcerer, being asked for a history lesson wasn’t one of them. How had he even been so out of touch with the world? True, A’zam had been at the bottom of the Red Sea, but there must have been some way for him to keep an eye on things, right? Zuri was determined to believe that was the case.
But now she could take some time and ease down. It was a long road home and well worth it knowing her clan of spotted darlings was waiting for her. The thought of them brought a smile to her face, one that didn’t quite suit her.
Her stomach growled.
The smile Zuri wore grew into a more sinister one. If she was going to make it back in good time, she would of course need to be well fed. While she was certainly outside of Sharm by now with the awful crowds and filthy ocean far behind her, there was certainly a decent amount of outlying towns. She could smell livestock nearby, the shepherds lingering near them. But which to go for?
The choice would be made for her. She heard a familiar little voice and paused before she ever reached the town. She saw the frightened farmer before she saw the little Witch. He apparently saw her as a source of aid. Funny, since Zuri was sure he couldn’t have recognized a complete stranger. People were so trusting these days it was baffling. Sighing, she supposed he would do well enough. Zuri waited until he got closer before letting a smirk slide smoothly onto her face.
“Hy-ena, hy-ena, howl.”
Zuri took a deep breath in the pause where the farmer skidded to a halt only feet from her. She locked eyes with him and mimicked the howl of a hyena exactly; a low and grating sound that sent visible chills through him. The farmer shook, staring in wide-eyed terror before freezing completely in place. Zuri gave a toothy grin to her petrified victim. “Much better.” But before Zuri could take a step forward to decide where to bite first, the familiar voice she’d heard earlier fit to a familiar face she saw approaching. Tilting her head to one side, Zuri placed her hands on her hips. “Cendrine dear? What are you doing here?” She would have thought the little one would have made her way somewhere safer for a young Witch but evidently not.

That was something Cendrine had not been expecting. Instead of the guy being slowed down because he tripped, he was stopped by a person. A person that was familiar looking, too! That was the witch Cendrine had been with to go meet that sorcerer guy. That whole ordeal had been kinda boring, but that was okay because it meant Cendrine got to explore Africa. Which she never had before.
Cendrine continued to run up, still holding onto her sword made of ashes, but then stopped when Zuri asked her what she was doing here. That seemed like kinda a silly question, but Cendrine would answer anyway. ”Huh? I was just going to explore! Then this guy said he wanted to see one of my magic tricks so...” Cendrine fiddled with the sword in her hand for a moment or two. Was she in trouble or something? Surely not, but Cendrine did not want to be in trouble.
Wait. Zuri was here too, so if Cendrine was in trouble Zuri would be as well. ”But, what are you doing here, Zuri?” Cendrine asked, jumping up slightly since Zuri was so much taller than her. Cendrine didn’t even wait for an answer before she turned her attention to the man. He was frozen again. That was funny. Had Zuri did that?
Cendrine took a few steps back to get a better look at the guy without having to pull her neck backwards. That’d cause it to be sore for a few days so she didn’t want to do that. ”Ah! I know! Did you stop so I could try again?” She asked the man. He didn’t answer, of course, but Cendrine took his silence as a yell. Whispering the incantation to herself, Cendrine bent down to turn a small section of the ground to ash. She whispered the incantation again to use those ashes to make another small boulder thingy.
Levitating the object over the guy’s head again, Cendrine spoke in a sing-song voice. ”Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!” With that, she attempted to bring the rock down onto the guy’s head. But, again, the spell did not work. The rock reverted back to ashes before it even touched the man. He stayed frozen, though. That was good! At least he wasn’t trying to play tag with her again.
Letting out a soft sigh, Cendrine lifted the hand that held the sword in it. ”I’ll show you this one instead, then!” She cheered, bringing the sword to the guy’s neck and cutting it. Cendrine was clearly not worried about what Zuri would think of her actions. Did Cendrine even remember that Zuri was still there? The little witch was just enjoying the red ooze that flowed from the guy’s neck as he begun to slump over. She then returned the sword to it’s original state of ashes, doing a twirl as she did.

The little one was exploring? How daring for one so young, not that Zuri had any room to talk. She and her sister had been young as well when they struck out on their own, but they also had numbers. Or rather, they had numbers until they finally split up. Zuri could hear their shrill nagging in the back of her mind and adopted a sour expression before shaking their dreadful voices out of her head. What wretches she called family. She was ever thankful they hadn’t accompanied their group to the Red Sea. Had they come along Zuri could say for certain that one of them would have died, likely from being eaten.
Family trait.
Cendrine’s explanation was gone with the wind, but her question as to what exactly Zuri was up to brought her back into the real world to. Giggling at Cendrine’s attempt to reach her height, Zuri gave a toothy grin and rested her hands on her hips. “Stopping for a snack on my way home.” She closed the small gap between her and the poor frozen man cowering before her, bending at the waist to look him in the eyes. “But it seems we’ve found the same target,” she mused. Normally she was more territorial. Perhaps she was tired, perhaps she was getting old. She didn’t want think on it for now.
Apparently it was the little one’s turn to dive into her own little world. Apparently she was oblivious to the spell Zuri had used, but that was a young witch for you even if Cendrine did seem a bit scatterbrained. But she had Zuri’s interest. “Try again? Try what, dear?” She tilted her head to look down at the little witch, watched her turn dry ground to ashes and then to a rock. For a brief moment, Zuri watched with curiosity and vague confusion. What in the world was this girl doing? Subjecting him to her substitute for snow in a place to hot and arid for it to exist?
Ah, no that wasn’t it. Zuri smiled in a manner more sinister. A smidgen of pride wormed its way in as well. A new spell, was it? How darling. What exactly it was supposed to do as unknown, but she assumed that the rock wasn’t supposed to fall apart. But that was what practice was for. Cendrine didn’t seem in the mood to try again, at least not for the moment. No, instead she took the sword in her hands and cut his throat, successfully knocking him over in the process. Still frozen, still staring wide-eyed, and now bleeding out onto the tan earth with nothing to do about it. With a bit of flare, Cendrine seemed to be done with the mess she’d made. Zuri sighed softly, eyeing the soon to be corpse hungrily.
What a waste it would be.
Zuri kneeled down beside the dying man and held her fingers to the gash in his neck. She waited until they were stained with red before bringing them to her lips and licking them clean, smiling. Casting a sideways glance at the little witch, she posed a suggestion that may benefit them both. “Practice makes perfect for new spells, Cendrine dear,” she said, tone sweet as the blood still lingering on her tongue. “There is an entire little down where he must have come from. No doubt many who inhabit it would love to see your magic tricks.” And many she could delight in ripping to shreds with tooth and nail.

Cendrine wasn’t paying Zuri much attention. The older witch had completely lost her interest by now, since she wasn’t the one who’d soon be oozing that funny red stuff. Zuri’s words of her stopping for a snack were completely ignored as Cendrine paid all her attention to the poor man.
Her next question was completely ignored too. To be fair, Cendrine was focused on her target. It was bad to lose focus when casting spells. That was what her mentor had taught her. Especially for a new spell like this one. Perhaps Cendrine’s lack of focus was why it kept on failing. She let out a long sigh as the spell failed again, but that was okay because she had spells that worked too.
When Cendrine did finally turn her attention back to Zuri, the older witch was smiling. Huh? That was odd. Why on earth would she be smiling? Cendrine’s magic trick didn’t work and she should be frowning, right? Well, maybe she was smiling because the second one worked. Either way, Cendrine certainly didn’t catch on to how sinister the smile looked. Little expressions like that were hard for her to distinguish. Heck, little Cendrine didn’t even know what on earth the word “sinister” meant.
A moment later and Zuri was kneeling beside the man. Cendrine was a bit confused. She looked to be licking the red stuff off. Why? Did it taste good or something? That would not be surprising, as Cendrine had never tried it for herself. The witch tilted her head slightly, which caused her oversized hat to almost fall off. Fortunately, she managed to grab it and stick it back on to her head. And with that Zuri’s past actions were all of completely forgotten. Cendrine’s attention span was very, very small.
”Oh, I know that!” She replied to Zuri when she made the “practise makes perfect” mini speech. Cendrine had heard that saying many times while she was training to be a witch. And she still heard it a lot. It must have been her grandmother’s favourite speech or something. ”Which is why I am practising.”
Zuri’s next suggestion made Cendrine’s entire face bright up. ”Oh, that does sound like fun!” The witch cheered. However, the happy expression on her face soon faded as she thought of something. ”Wait, my teacher told me I wasn’t supposed to show magic to people when there was a lot of others around...”

A short attention span. Lovely. But she really couldn’t expect too much from one so young. Besides, she was at least trying, and Zuri somehow just couldn’t stay mad at a little thing with as much love for the color red as Cendrine did. Zuri loved it for other reasons, but perhaps she could show Cendrine how useful blood could be, and how delicious. Now that would be a switch, educating the young instead of devouring them. To be fair Zuri would eat any who got in her way, angered her, or encountered her while she was hungry, but that was currently irrelevant. All that was relevant was the little witch’s progress.
The bubbly glee that Zuri usually found in the young one faded near as soon as she suggested the convenient option. Raising an eyebrow, Zuri slowly tilted her head sideways. Perhaps there was still a lingering sense of remorse somewhere in the girl, some scrap of innocence that had yet to be overpowered. Shame, if that were the case. But her potentially disappointment was chased away by explanation. Zuri couldn’t help but wonder just who this teacher was. Sound advice for a young witch, but Cendrine had obviously entered into an age where she was capable of roaming about on her own and defending herself. A little practice was to be expected, and in her opinion encouraged.
But then again she had been raised and allowed free range of practice over those captive and under watchful eyes in an environment where no harm would come to her.
Zuri had a simple fix for the little one’s fears. With a toothy grin painted on her face, she moved to place a still bloodied finger beneath Cendrine’s chin. “There will be no others left once we pay them a visit. No harm will be done with no one to talk of our deeds.” Zuri giggled and slowly stood, placing both hands on her hips. “Besides, I am with you! Think of me as a chaperone, if you will, a supervisor. You will be alright, as will I. You will not be the only one performing magic tricks, Cendrine dear. I have a few of my own I would like to show off as well.” Her giggling was barely containable, Zuri bringing a hand to partially cover the entirely too amused look of morbid glee on her face.
“It can be a magic show of our own,” she said looking off towards the town, “It will be fine, why, they’ll be frozen in awe, their breath stolen away by our talent!” And then their blood will flow into her hands and their hearts will be stilled for her to sink her teeth into. She did hope the pitch worked on the little one. It was always more fun hunting in a group, and she was still far from home and clan. Her hyenas were unavailable until she returned.

It was very very good that Zuri was okay with Cendrine’s extremely short attention span. Because honestly that wasn’t even Cendrine’s worst or most annoying trait. Not that she knew that, of course. All she knew was that she’d be extremely upset if Zuri were to just randomly leave for no reason she could comprehend. Which, to be fair, was most of them.
In any case, Cendrine was simply happy that she had company right now. She rarely had company for more than a few moments at a time, as once she had shown them magic they tended to not talk to her much anymore. Witches were different as she couldn’t show them her magic tricks, but since Cendrine was so young and weak she hadn’t actually met all that many witches. Cendrine didn’t mind much, of course. She preferred the magic to the company.
Zuri’s next words confused Cendrine just a bit. ”Huh? Where are they going?” She asked, but that question seemed to fade from her mind as Zuri kept talking. Enya had said nothing about what to do when there were other witches with her. Hell, Cendrine wasn’t even sure why she wasn’t supposed to show magic to a bunch of people all at once. She just knew that Enya had said it was the worst thing a witch could possibly do or something like that.
But, Zuri’s glee was quite obvious. Even Cendrine picked up on it. And she was saying that they’d be fine so long as they were together. That sounded perfectly reasonable to Cendrine. Plus, the pitch that came afterwards? Zuri was quite a good sweet-talker, but there was no way in hell that Cendrine would actually know that Zuri was just trying to woo her into doing something. Perhaps if she did, she’d be a little bit more adamant about obeying her Grandmother. Instead:
”Oh, alrighty then!” Cendrine cheered, quite literally as she pumped a hand into the air. ”That sounds like fun!”
It was then that Cendrine remembered a question that had been itching at her mind since she had met Zuri. She wasn’t sure if it had been answered. Honestly probably had, but she didn’t quite remember. ”So, what kinda magic do you do?” She asked, not meaning to slow the other witch down. They could walk and talk.
