The forest was lovely. It was shady, and breezy, and altogether pleasant to be in.
Getting there wasn't nearly as wonderful, though. It was still hot, the exact thing that Noelle hated, and even though the walk hadn't seemed that long, she had begun to sweat long before she made it to the forest. Not much, but a tiny rash was beginning to snake its way up her arms. That was irritating, though it wasn't long before she finally found shelter in the forest. She walked a little ways in, before picking her ideal tree and plopping down underneath it. She gave a rather proud looking smile, staring out in the expanse of woods before her.
Yes, this was nice. She just wanted to stay here forever.
Though, it wasn't very lady-like to live in a forest. She'd go mad, surely. Not to mention she probably wouldn't survive on her own long. She had read some books most of the way through, but that didn't make her an expert on survival. But she could certainly stay here for a pretty little while--that had been in her intentions, coming all the way out here. She couldn't really say it was anything rebellious; she just didn't want to go home today. And it wasn't like she had any friends she could stay with. So she decided to rough it out for a night, even though she had a long time before nightfall.
She knew it was a little immature. She knew it would worry her guardians sick. Maybe part of her, a very tiny part, wanted that. But at the same time, she really didn't want to be a bother. Another, much larger, part of her hoped that maybe her brother would just accept that she was gone and move on with his life normally. Maybe he could go back to school--it would certainly be easier for him to find a job with a diploma. She knew that wouldn't happen, but it was a vain hope. She also knew that she couldn't stay away forever...she had to go back eventually.
Just not today. She wanted today off, she wanted to get away from the stress and depression her brother was putting himself through. She wanted to get away from an overworked Hannah who was too tired to talk anymore. For just one day, she wanted to escape the fragile way they treated her, like she was something special.
Her smile was long gone, replaced by a pout. She leaned back against the tree trunk, suddenly feeling a little lost. Things would get worse when she got back, wouldn't they? But that was a risk she was willing to take for one day of freedom.
