When he opens his eyes the cocktail of seagull wings and shades of blue is replaced by a ceiling, meters too low, a small window at the end of a narrow bedroom, and peeling wood floorboards under worn rugs. It’s his room, albeit not exactly the same as it were yesterday...
Noelle had read the same words probably thirty times by now, but every time she went to restart she was lost at the word "seagull". So naturally, in her daydreaming, she didn't really pay attention to the words she was reading, thus she had to start over. And the cycle just continued on like that for a while, until she finally gave up on reading and just decided to stare out the window. She hadn't been too interested in the story in the first place, but she knew Hannah liked it a lot so she was going to give it a try. But it was only page one and she couldn't really see herself finishing it, despite how short the story actually was.
A heavy sigh left her as she began to count how many hours she had before she had to go home. Nowadays, going home was a little depressing. Aiden was still having trouble finding a job, so naturally he was starting to get depressed. But he always tried to hide it from her, and kept pretending to act like an idiot. Maybe someday, when she was a little older, he'd learn to confide in her. But she didn't really blame him, because she didn't like to share her feelings with him either. But now that she was thinking about it, she didn't really get to talk to Hannah about that sort of thing either anymore. Hannah always seemed to be at work, quite the opposite of the only man in the house.
She wished she could go do something besides sit around in the library all afternoon. Or, at least, she wished Espen was here to talk with her.
If she had money, she might have been able to go to town and buy some candy. No one really liked for her to go out alone, but what they didn't know wouldn't hurt them. Unfortunately, she was broke.
In the end, she found herself slouching in her chair, kicking her feet back and forth. "Boooored..." she grumbled. She wondered if cold weather ever found its way to this part of the country. She could start jogging, or something, if the heat would just go away.

Thunk. A light noise could be heard from within the library. One might have to be remaining pretty silent, not be wrapped up in a book, and have pretty good hearing; but it was there. Something had hit the roof? Or the wall? One couldn’t be too sure at the moment. Heck, maybe the sky was falling. The window that may have held clear skies, or clouds, a passing insect, or possibly a bird was soon going to be interrupted with a much less normal sight. The top of the window was first introduced to abnormality. A blue boot, sliding slowly down the glass pane, complete with annoying squeaking at the descending object. Not much later, the other boot appeared. Bottom of the shoe, but just the toe, pressed against the glass and sliding downwards. These boots had an owner. And that owner was still wearing them. This fact became painstakingly obvious as the person’s whole body soon followed the boots. Kaylin McOlster. Energetic Meister. Had somehow gotten herself above Shibusen’s library. Now she was slowly descending to… who knew. Obviously she had no idea, fun being the only thing that clouded her mind. Smiles and games. Even now, a large grin was on the blue-clad female’s face. Her arms outstretched to the sides, hugging to the class, one would be able to see slight movement from her midsection. Laughing. The girl was laughing. Grin on her face, the laughter could just barely be heard. Eyes were totally closed as the girl was totally wrapped up in the amusement of it all. And still, she was sliding, that horrid squeaking of clothing, skin, and boots sliding across glass. It took much longer than it should have, but going at such a slow pace helped. Her feet eventually hit a small separator of the glass panes, just enough of a ledge to get her to stop her movement. Still pressed up against the glass, her toes holding her up on the bit of ‘ledge’, Kaylin stared into the library. A place she had been in once or twice before, it wasn’t a place that people welcomed her. In fact, often times people tried to get her out! That was quite a game. Like tag. Except there were a lot of ‘its.’ Grin still on her face, she brought her arms a bit closer into her body. Hands pressed up against the window, she put her face directly on it as well. Nose smashed into the glass, eyes looking in, wide cheshire grin… That was Kaylin. Bringing back her right hand a bit, she balled it into a fist, the knocked loudly on the window. “Come fly with me!” The girl’s holler was obviously muffled from being outside and not in the library, but the knocking on the glass would catch a glance or two, if the obnoxious sliding hadn’t already.

Nothing had been heard at first. Noelle had been so lost in thought, that she barely paid the tiny thunk any mind. She had actually just been pondering over leaving the boring library. And while she liked that part of the plan, she couldn't really come up with what to do once she left. Wandering the school was no fun, and going to town sucked if you didn't have any money. And no friends meant no one to hang out with. To top all of that off, someone was being really annoying; were they sliding across the glass, or something? There was a squeaking noise that she didn't like.
She looked up to find the source of the irritation, before her eyes widened as she spotted a person sliding down the window from outside. Her annoyance fled from the room as she watched the person make their way down the pane of glass, wondering if that hurt at all. It was a curious site, and even more so when the girl outside came to a stop and started to laugh. (Presumably so, since Noelle could not hear her. But she appeared to be doing so.)
Then there was knocking, and Noelle jumped a little in surprise. Words were spoken, though Noelle wasn't sure she heard the other person correctly. Fly? Surely she hadn't said that. The smaller girl took a sweeping glance across the room, to see if anyone else would indulge this person. There were stares, but like her no one seemed willing to move. Well, she wasn't going to pass up the opportunity for something interesting, at least. She pushed herself from her chair and hurried over to get closer to the other person. "What?" she asked, trying to raise her voice but probably not doing a very good job of it. She was naturally soft spoken.
She wondered if she could open one of the windows. At least then, the two of them could speak properly. The funny girl on the glass could even come in, if she wanted. Noelle began to examine the windows, wondering if she was strong enough to get it open. It was fairly large, but surely there was a way.

It was warm outside.
Kaylin’s skin was beginning to scream at her for being outside in the hot sun with her being pressed up against glass that had been sitting in the sun’s rays. In fact… she very well may have been burning it. She really couldn’t be bothered with that though. The squeaking sound against the glass was too funny. Seeing people sitting and scurrying around the library was like watching the animals play and frolic. Being so high up was freeing. She really did just want to fly.
So when one brown haired girl had gotten up from her seat and approached the window, Kaylin’s large grin got somehow bigger. Still, the library windows didn’t make it easy to interact with people when one was inside and one was out. First of all, that glass was thick. So it was difficult to hear. Second, they were pretty far from the floor. Even on the highest level of the library, there was still a tall bookcase lining the wall before it reached the domed windows above. Kaylin had reached the bottom of the domed windows, so that was… helpful?
Really, the meister had little idea about how difficult this all was. She just knew she was climbing and flying and falling…. or something. Fun was being had. The girl below her had opened her mouth, but Kaylin had certainly heard no sound. Another laugh echoing from the child-like meister, her one foot slipped from the slight edge. Eyes widening slightly with surprise, her arms spread out straight again against the glass as she attempted to regain her balance and stability. Somehow, her other foot had kept her up, her body flattened against the glass keeping her from falling to… possibly her death.
Eyes on Noelle again, Kaylin was still grinning like an insane person. This one wanted to play. Kaylin just needed to get her outside! Because… obviously that was the better solution? Looking around the window and down and around again and then down… She had a brief thought. Could she get in here? Teachers hated her in the library, but what if this was like that hide and seek game?
Shifting her position, legs farther apart, starting to get her body down farther, her hands grabbed at the bottom of the window. Did it slide up? Did it open out? Kaylin didn’t care or think about it, even if it would cause some trouble depending on what it was. What was the difference?! She needed to hide to seek! Pulling hard, she tried to pull the window up or open or whatever. Well… being latched from the inside didn’t help, but she hadn’t really stopped yet either so…. It would be interesting to see what happened if it did come open and opened out instead of up like a domed window should.

Noelle’s hands flew to her mouth before she could make any coherent thought, a harsh gasp of air filling her lungs as she almost witnessed the death of the funny girl on the window. She didn’t take another breath until the other person had steadied herself, and only then could she move on to ponder over her next course of action.
If anything interesting was going to happen, then that window needed to be opened. The girl outside was already making an attempt to open it, but it didn’t seem to be going well. Noelle made a face, looking around the room to see what her resources were. There was a stool nearby, used for reaching the books on the top shelves of the library. But even with that bit of assistance, Noelle was far too short to reach the window. But perhaps she could climb onto the bookshelf? She’d certainly be able to reach it from there. It’d be a little dangerous, and her guardians would never approve of such an activity, but right now she cared more about speaking with the individual who had caught her interest.
It took only a moment for Noelle to drag the stool where she wanted it, and then she nimbly hopped upon it and gazed up at the mountain before her. There was still a few feet between her and the top of the bookshelf, and she found herself cursing the stool. (Stupid thing didn’t do any good at all.) She gave an experimental hop, to see if she could reach the top on her own. But when it was clear that she could not, she decided she would have to use the shelves as steps. And after glancing around the large room to make sure no figures of authority were watching, she did exactly that.
And it was in that way that she made it to the top of the shelf, taking a seat next to an old and dusty bust of what she assumed to be a past headmaster. She then carefully twisted herself around and got to her knees, and was just able to reach the window. It seemed it was latched from the inside, so that must have been why the other girl couldn’t get it open. So with minimal effort, Noelle flipped the latch so that the window could now be opened.

Little one wanted to play~
The thought entertained Kaylin to no end. What could also be found amusing is that Kaylin thought of Noelle as ‘little.’ The two of them had to be similar in size, maybe Kaylin a bit larger of a person, but definitely no taller… Both of them were little ones! While this wouldn’t occur to Kaylin unless they were standing face to face, she did indeed find herself amused. The girl was coming towards her. Much too slowly, but coming all the same! Still trying to get the window open, the girl’s grin never faltered. There was no real reason she should stop trying just because the other girl was coming to help her. What if she got it open early? The fun could continue all that much sooner!
Look at the window. Pull pull. Look at the girl. She got a stool!. Back to the window. Pullllll. The girl again. CLIMBING! That funness made Kaylin pause for a moment. The girl was climbing up the bookcase to get to the window! That sure looked great… Maybe they could climb all of those? Pull books out? Toss things? WHO KNEW!
Movement caught her attention again. The girl’s hand moved the… latch? ooohhh. That made sense. Laughing to herself, Kaylin wrenched the window open fully. It pulled out. How lovely. Her feet having been on just the sill of the window, her hands gripping the panel that she had just thrust open, she found herself quite stretched to keep herself from falling to the ground below. But still, she looked none too concerned with the position she was in. Grinning like the mad child she was, her eyes settled on Noelle once again.
Quickly but efficiently, she shimmied her hands along the edge of the window panel she had opened out and up. Around the corner, closer to the building, her body became less and less stretched outwards. When she was no longer leaning outwards, she hopped right onto the bookcase. Kneeling down, knees fully bent, she started the other brown-haired girl right in the eye. Gleeful glint to her eye, Kaylin’s fingers tapped against her bare knees.
For only a fleeting moment or two did Kaylin stare at the girl’s eyes, then she noticed something else. Wide grin only somehow growing wider, Kaylin’s right hand instinctively snatched out for Noelle’s… braid.
“You’re like a moveable rope girl!”
So much for being referred to as ‘little.’ Now Noelle was the rope girl. Or for now. Life was always moving and changing for Kaylin. What would even be more fun is if someone kept up with her.

Turns out, the window was quite easy to open once the latch had been switched. Noelle leaned back and looked a little proud of herself, even though she hadn't actually exerted much effort at all. Climbing up the bookcase was an adventure, though, and something outside of her comfort zone. But she was feeling a little rebellious today, so she'd probably even climb out that window with the girl. As long as there was a decent breeze.
Oh, so it opened out. What a strange window; she had never seen one like that. But she hadn't seen many things in her life. What was more interesting was she had never watched someone climb into a window quite like that, though it was certainly amusing to watch. She waited patiently for this girl to situate herself, excited about what adventures might flow from this one's mouth. They locked eyes for only a brief moment, and then something else became much more important.
Noelle's eyes widened and she pulled away in an attempt to avoid any touching, though it seemed the girl was just going for her hair. That was fine; Noelle actually liked it when Hannah did her hair, so she could let this person touch it. Though her hair was boring, it was soft and nice to touch. So she could understand the interest in it, sort of. But what she didn't understand was what she said.
"Moveable...rope girl?" she repeated, unsure of what that was supposed to mean or if she should be offended by it. It didn't really sound like an insult, but it didn't really sound like a compliment either. It was just a confusing way to greet someone anyway. She decided it was better just not to think too much about it.
"Was there anything interesting on the roof?"

Rope giiiirllllllllll
Lovely little ropes hanging from her head. Maybe it was like Kaylin’s own whip? That thought striking her mind for a mere moment, the excited meister took a quick glance to her hip. Braided leather there and accounted for. But it sure wasn’t on her head. Was this girl confused on where to put things?
Giggling, Kaylin released Noelle’s hair. Her hands moving back to her own bent legs, she patted her palms not so lightly against them, receiving that slapping sound in return. Her mind was distracted from Noelle’s existence, eyes darting about the library for what might catch her attention next. The library was not… one of her favorite places to be. But, the roof was semi-awkward for her to get around. Not that either one couldn’t be fun, but…. not at the top of her list of joyous places.
Sound caught her ears, and her attention. Obviously snapping out of some sort of…. something, Kaylin looked back to Noelle like she had just appeared there. A rejuvenated smile, Kaylin hadn’t quite locked in her first words. Probably because it had just been repetition of her own, that tended to happen. But the question mostly sat with her. Heck, Kaylin would have even answered it, if she wouldn’t have noticed something else.
Her eyes widened and a light gasp could be heard. It wasn’t fear or really even surprise, just overall excitement. The bust. That’s what she saw. Noelle had herself next to it, which sadly had put Noelle between Kaylin and this new prize.
Wanting this bust, Kaylin lurched forward. She was getting to that head. Her first attempt was to climb/scramble over the other girl. It never occurred to Kaylin that someone might be skittish. Would be a shame if she pushed the girl right off the bookcase…. But really that wasn’t her intention. She could very well get tangled up in whips, braide, and short people before she ever got to the bust.
All the while, Kaylin would be grinning. Joy ever present in the young girl, the only hint as to why this girl might want the bust so bad were a few words.
“I FOUND IT! THE BODY-LESS HORSEMAN!”

This person gave no explanation for any of her actions, not for the rope girl comment or why she was on the roof. Noelle couldn't really bring herself to be annoyed by it, because she was far too interested in the strange girl herself. She had started slapping her legs, which was also weird, but not as weird as the gasp that left her and the exclamation, and before Noelle could formulate any kind of hypothesis on this girl she was crawling all over her.
Her immediate, instinctive reaction was to shove the other girl off of her. Or somehow get away from her. She wasn't really sure what had happened, because she had reacted so quickly. Her hands had made contact with the other girl, and she had made a mad scramble to try and get away and had almost fallen off of the bookshelf. In fact, she had hung there for a a couple of seconds before she pulled herself back up. She had pressed herself to the wall, keeping her hands out in front of her to keep from having any other form of contact -- regardless of wherever the other girl had ended up.
In her attempt to catch her breath, her brain began replaying the episode for her. Not what had actually happened, but what had transpired before that. The Body-less Horseman? That didn't even make sen-
Oh. The bust, right? Noelle remembered it now, though she couldn't recall what it looked like at the moment. Nor could she really see where it had run off to. It had been sitting on the shelf, forgotten by most of the students and faculty. Well, not completely forgotten it seemed, because it was the Weird Girl's objective.
Which was now MIA. That was probably partially Noelle's fault. She glanced around, leaning over the side of the bookshelf to see if the bust had fallen to the ground. If it did, it didn't break because she didn't see any remnants of what it once was. It must have rolled away somewhere.
"Where did it go?"
She almost hadn't asked, because this girl hadn't answered any of her other comments. But it came out anyway, almost as though she were thinking out loud.
