Porter; James; Meister
Name:
James Porter
Nickname:
Jamie—though very, very reluctantly
Age:
17
Gender:
Male
Race:
Meister
Position:
Student
Class:
One Star
Partner:
A Strong Body
Picture:
Appearance:
From his mother, James inherited beautiful ivory skin that burns far too easily and piercing blue eyes that are, more often than not, lined with tears. From her he also attainted thick, dark hair that is much longer than she ever wanted it to be and, speaking frankly, probably isn’t washed as often as it should. From father came everything else: a comparatively short stature, very limited upper body strength, and below average eye sight. He has glasses, and almost always keeps them on his person, but rarely does he wear them. (He doesn’t quite like the way they fit on his face, and is quite subconscious about them.)
He has a total of five piercings on his body, four in his left ear and one on his tongue. (Makes for interesting makeouts.) Two were approved of by his mother, while the others were purchased by his aunt. As a result, the top two on his left ear were left alone to hopefully close up.
He likes to dress nicely, and prefers crisp, button up shirts and slacks. Because of this, he rather liked that his previous school had uniforms. But now he’s almost always in a hurry, and ends up tossing on whatever clothes he finds lying about his floor—typically a hoodie that is the right size but looks rather baggy on him, and skinny jeans. No matter the weather, a hoodie is almost always present. His favorite is a forest green one, though he owns three others of varying shades of grey and red. Along with this, he normally wears a normal pair of black converse shoes, even though they hurt his feet.
He always keeps at least two rubber bands on his wrist, because he almost always ends up tying his hair back by the end of the day. On particularly warm days, the hoodie is removed briefly to reveal either a plain t-shirt or a black tank top.
In his hoodie pockets, there are always packets of gummy worms and an ipod. He never leaves the house without either.
Height:
5’8
Weight:
143 lbs
Fighting Style:
Physically, James isn’t the strongest. But thanks to growing up with soccer, he does have quite a bit of stamina and endurance. So he usually ends up hoping his opponent gets tired before he does, or at the very least he can live long enough to figure a strategy out. He’s not the smartest, but he’s perceptive; he can usually find some kind of weak point. When it comes to actually fighting, he has more leg strength than arm strength, and has found that kicking gives him more positive results than punching.
He isn’t especially well trained in any sort of weaponry, though his mother taught him how to use a pistol—strictly for when he and his younger sisters were home alone.
Personality:
Most of his life, James has had to take care of his many little sisters. Because of that, he has become a bit of a mother hen and tends to worry and fuss over people without even realizing it. He vehemently denies it, though, even going so far as to say that he hates kids. (Which, he doesn’t. In fact, he has a soft spot for anyone younger than him.) Also, because of all the little girls in his life, he developed a rather tender heart and cries frequently. Younger sister crying because of a bloody knee? He’ll cry too, all the while bandaging her up and telling her that she’s okay. Sappy romance movie? Tears, even though he hated every second of the movie. Anything remotely frightening? Niagara Falls. In a public situation, he will try and blame it on the contacts that he doesn’t wear, though anyone even sort of familiar with him won’t believe him. He is extremely insecure, not only about that but with other aspects of his personality and appearance, so if he is ever called out on it he’ll probably cry some more and hide away in his room. If he cannot escape, he’d fall silent for the rest of the outing.
On the topic of insecurity, he remembers nearly everything other people say about him. A sister pointed out how pale he was, so he started covering his skin. The kids in his elementary school made fun of his glasses, so now he refuses to wear them. His neighbor criticized his piercings, so he grew his hair out to cover them. He would never admit it openly, but he takes everything that people tell him seriously, almost to a dangerous degree.
James is a bit of a busybody, so much so that he doesn’t really know what to do with himself if there isn’t anything to do. He’s used to rushing from school to school, picking up little sisters and then watching over them at the house—and with five of them, he was kept on his toes. His workload even seemed to double when his mother began spending more time at home on maternity leave and oh how he prayed it was a boy.
He’s a pretty picky eater—in fact, he’s not very fond of eating in general. He does really love gummy bears, though, and often keeps a bag of them in his pocket and chews on them throughout the day.
If he could have one wish, he’d want to be an artist. He thinks that particular talent is really cool, but unfortunately he doesn’t have the creativity nor the talent for it. That doesn’t stop him from doodling in his notes, and he insists that he’s a very talented artist.
He really, really, really hates animals. It started off with an attack from an alley cat as a child, which resulted in a horrible allergic reaction and led to a hatred for everything with fur.
While he does a good job of keeping the house clean, his room usually ends up getting the short end of the stick and is in a consistently sloppy state. He doesn’t mind it too much, and it isn’t like he has a lot of friends that would come over and hang out in the messy room anyway.
He has become quite perceptive over time, and can usually figure out when the baby sister is upset by something before she can start screaming about it. He also notices little things about his classmates and even just random passersby on the street—and he tells himself not to think about it too much, or he’d get involved with the girl who was trying to hide depression or the man who was twitching in such an angry way.
Socially, Jamie’s a little awkward. He has a bad habit of saying the worst things completely on accident, and he’s so painfully aware of it that sometimes he won’t even talk to people who approach him. He likes to try and play it cool, but most conversations with strangers end with him wanting to cry.
Inside the Soul
Abilities:
Jamie has had the Soul Perception ability since he was fourteen years old, though it isn’t terribly strong. If people pass by close enough, with the farthest he has ever reached being six feet away, and he concentrates hard enough, he can catch a decent glimpse at the soul. It’s most effective when he’s listening to music and in a peaceful environment, like the park for example.
Resonances:
Out of your Mind
Strengths:
-Strategic
-High Stamina
-Agile
-High Endurance
Weaknesses:
-Lack of Combat Experience
-Physically Weak
-Poor Eyesight (And Stubbornness. Just wear the damn glasses!)
-Psychologically Weak
Hobbies:
In the little free time he can find, he likes to listen to music. Preferably in a quiet place far away from people. He also likes to read a lot, also away from people because he actually has to wear his glasses to read.
Likes:
-Soccer, though he has little time to play it.
-Gummy Bears. A lot.
-Music
-The idea of going on an adventure, though he’d probably never embark on one himself.
-Doodling
-The color green.
Dislikes:
-His glasses.
-The color blue.
-Animals. Anything with fur, to be precise.
-Caramel.
-Cold temperatures.
-Technology.
Aspirations:
Honestly, he doesn’t know what he wants to do. He wants to break out of his role as “mother”, though he isn’t sure that’s possible. So he’s going to work hard and try to become a decent Meister, and hope something comes to him along the way.
History:
He doesn’t remember much from before the first sister was born. He remembered playing soccer, and his mother’s awful cooking, but that was it. When he was five years old, Jenna was born and suddenly everyone was telling him to become a good big brother, and that she was counting on him and that only he could keep her safe. He took his new responsibility seriously, only leaving the baby’s side for school and soccer practice. Two years after that came Ellie, and then three years later came Alice and Anna. It was finally when baby Melody was born, a good twelve years his junior, that James realized his mother must have had a baby obsession or something. It was also around this time that he quit soccer, so that he could take care of his many siblings while his mother and father were almost always away for work.
Right before he started high school, the whole family picked up and moved from pleasant little Wauconda, Illinois all the way to Winter Haven, Florida thanks to a change in position on father's part. As far as James knew, he might as well have moved to a different country. He may have hated the cold temperatures of his old home, but he found within a week of moving south that he wasn't fond of humidity either. And no matter how much his mother insisted that he was at the perfect age to start a new school, he couldn't find a reason to believe her considering the students at his new school took zero interest in him. Outside of two or three friendly faces that spoke with him during classes, very few people even took notice of him.
He had made it barely a month before he started what he later described to be "seeing things". These moments were short, although a little frightening nonetheless, so he had kept quiet about it for a little while. It wasn't until it happened at his own breakfast table, with his own family, that he started to freak out and spilled everything to his mother.
...who laughed in his face, muttering something about her and her husband having "given up on" him.
This, ultimately, led to tears and an angry demand for an explanation. (A very crappy one, he would decide a little later after gathering a bit more information from his father.) Apparently his parents had been "great", his mother's word, Meisters back in the day. Turns out, his aunt wasn't actually related to him at all, and was his mother's weapon partner. And no one bothered to tell him any of that, because he "didn't ask". (Also his mother's words. His father later told him that since he never showed signs of Meister capabilities, they didn't think he needed to know.) His parents, and even his aunt, began insisting that he attend Shibusen, the school the three of them went to for Meister (and weapon) training. "That's where you'll learn the important stuff," his mother had assured him.
He flat out refused. He had only just started a new school, and that was going horribly. He didn't have any intentions of joining yet another new school, one that was filled with extraordinary people with great talents. And even though he had this "Soul Perception" or whatever dad had called it, he still felt incredibly ordinary.
His aunt and mother weren't pleased, but his father had just smiled and told him that this decision was just fine, too. "It's your life," he said, and even talked his wife and friend into acceptance.
Oddly enough, his mother became a bit clingier after that. She started texting him more often during the day, and even called when he got out of school. His aunt, his mother’s sister, also began stopping by more often to watch him and the children. Around this time was when he started getting his piercings, his mother withholding her protests when he insisted that it would make him seem more exciting, and that more people would hang out with him at school. He did take it a bit far, though, and got more than she had ever thought he would—and even got one on his tongue!
The piercings failed to gather positive attention from his classmates, and even the neighbor complained to his parents about how he was starting to go down a "dark path". Because of this, he started growing his hair out to hide the piercings. He even left two alone, so that they could heal and hopefully look better in a few years.
His self-esteem seemed to plummet from there. Jenna, at her tender age, had loudly declared that her brother was so pale that he could have been a ghost, and encouraged that he try and tan. Tanning didn’t work, however, and only ended up burning the fair skin. So James came back a few days later with several hooded jackets, and Jenna could honestly say that she’s never seen his arms since.
After a couple more years, James' father sat down with him and once more brought up the idea of attending Shibusen. He painted pictures of great adventures and lasting friendships and amazing acts of heroism that seemed to spark a bit of hope in the hopeless boy. And his mother was absolutely thrilled by it. She started babbling on about her time there, and how "you'll really love it, Jamie, I swear you will!" She even spent some time working on his Soul Perception with him, so that he would be prepared for school. Maybe James caught a bit of her excitement, because he was actually starting to look forward to a new school after all.

RP Sample:
Of the many, many people living in his house, James would miss Melody the most.
The baby of the family was sweet, grinning wildly at anyone she met and spouting off the cutest of things. She lacked a bit of tact, however, and sometimes said things that weren't technically considered polite in formal conversation. But James liked that about her, too. In that sense, they were kind of similar. However, it was a lot cuter when little Mel blurted out whatever was on her mind.
"That lady has a rat on her head."
"Hat, Mel. She's got a hat on her head."
The five year old held her chin up, as though trying to look at her older brother through her nose. "I know what I said," she replied, flicking her dark curls haughtily. She then returned to the little sand mound that the two of them were working on in the park's sandbox.
"I want to live in a sand castle one day."
James chuckled, which made her pout and lightly slap his knee. "I'm serious!" she insisted, clenching her fist around the fabric of his pants and pulling on it. He ignored her actions, pushing sand up into the mound in an attempt to make it taller.
"That'd be pretty hard to do. Why do you want to live in a sandcastle?" he humored her, leaning back and watching her with a tiny smile playing on his lips. It was easy to smile around Melody; little brat almost demanded it.
She dramatically threw herself over his lap, making herself comfortable. "Because I like sand," was her simple answer. He laughed again, though she didn't retaliate this time.
"I like sand, too." But I don't want to live in it. It didn't matter, though, because that was her dream. And as she explained her dream sand castle and how wonderful it would be, he began to wonder when the last time he had a dream was. He must have been very young; maybe it was before the twins were born?
At any rate, there wasn't a point in trying to remember. He had a new dream, one where he became a Meister. He'd become a successful brother that little Melody would be proud of. That all of his little sisters would be proud of. He wasn't going to be the useless James any longer; he'd grow stronger, and show everyone what he was capable of.
...now if only he could do all that without crying.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Nuh-uh! You're crying!"
"Am not!"
"Are tooooooo!"
She was going to call him a liar, too, but then he moved her off of his lap and stood up. "Hey! Where are you going?"
"Home. Annoying sisters can't come."
"Jamiiieeeeee!!!"
And even though he didn't want to, he smiled as the tiny kid ran up and latched onto his hand, making him promise he wouldn't leave her. He wondered if she remembered that he had to go off to school the next day?
Oh well. That would be a conversation they'd have later. For now, he was just going to be happy, because he had no clue when he'd feel like this again.

Just a few things! We’re gonna ask that you up his weight by five, maybe ten pounds as he’s currently a little underweight for his height class. You need to tell us where he’s from in his history. He wouldn’t just see ghosts with his Soul Perception. That’s not how it works, and he would be catching other people’s souls along with it. Plus ghosts are kind of a thing in Soul Eater anyway. If they were there, everyone would be able to see them. That being said, you need to tell us how he discovered his Soul Perception and his Meister status by proxy. We also want you to know that as a NOT student, James is going to have very little to do at the moment due to the lack of NOT students in general and how two of the NOT Weapons on the unpartnered list are currently in the process of partnering already. We recommend starting with a One Star simply because there is more to potentially do, but it is ultimately your choice. We’re simply making sure you know. That being said, I think James looks wonderful aside from those little tweaks!

Hello! Thank you very much for taking a look at my character! ~His weight has been changed, by about eight pounds if I remember correctly!
~Added the place of birth and current residence to his history ~Heh, I meant to write "ghosts" to signify that James had no idea what was going on, but the quotation marks got lost on the transition from Word to this site. I have changed it nonetheless, and I hope this works much better for you! ~I didn't completely understand the discovery of his Meister-ness bit, but I did a little more reading of other bios and tweaked a few things concerning that. Please let me know if I need to tweak further. ~I actually originally had him as One Star, then thought "hey I don't know what I'm doing" and moved him to NOT, but he has been moved back because I'd hate for him not to have anything to do.
That should be everything! Once again, thank you for looking this over! I really super appreciate it!

Just one last thing! We’d like you to put a range on his Soul Perception for how far he can see with it. An arm’s length would be probably three feet max. If you wanted to bump it to five or ten, that would be perfectly suitable for One star but again, totally up to you. Other than that, James looks good!
