Indeed she could stop hiding, from the hag at least. The wretched old woman was dead, she posed no threat to Daryna, but the people and little buildings behind her and back through the forest from where they’d ventured previously posed a very real one. She may not need to hide, but she couldn’t stay there. The girl’s worries were crushing, making it feel as though her chest were about to collapse. Her own tears burned her skin as they ran down her cheeks and the knuckles of her hands clamped over her mouth. Where would she go? What would she do?
Footsteps crushing the leaves made her shoulders jump and her eyes lift just enough to see that the girl had approached her. Unsurprising the prince had remained below, though not insulting. Why would he have any interest in her? She was likely as low as low got in terms of status compared to him. Daryna sniffed and attempted to pull herself together as the other girl knelt in front of her. She failed rather easily, her attempts to blink away her tears only making them fall faster, the short breaths she kept restrained to prevent sobbing making her shoulders shake. Never in her life had she felt so completely lost, wide-eyed and frightened in the face of the unknown.
But the gentle hand atop her head was more reassuring than Daryna could ever have imagined it would be. Having the courage to properly look up at the girl, Daryna found a sense of solace in how calm she seemed, how sure. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she tried to breathe more easily. Slow breathes, in and out. She couldn’t think if she was too busy crying, even if that was all she wanted to do, and even if her eyes kept watering in spite of her efforts as she wiped her eyes with the heel of her palm.
The hand offered to her and the smile accompanying it did little to sooth the still fresh sting of betrayal, but it did let hope take root. Daryna blinked away more tears, their tracks still evident and her eyes still reddened. Yes, she was right. There was no use. In all honesty, there was nothing. She had nothing anymore, not in Luchistoe anyway, and not in the red and gold leaves and twisted trees surrounding them. Nodding slowly, Daryna took the hand offered to her and stood carefully before dusting off the leaves that tried to cling to her skirt. “Da. Let us go.” Her voice remained pitchy and upset, but quieter now as she look from the girl and then over to the prince beyond.
“Thank you. Thank both of you.”
