Talking to a teacher about ending his partnership had been rough and getting the response that he was officially an unpartnered weapon again wasn’t exactly uplifting. Luckily he didn’t have to forfeit the one soul he had already absorbed but that seemed like a minor positive. That had been about a week ago and Fritz knew he couldn’t dwell on that forever or he would get nowhere. He was a demon weapon and a Shibusen student so he had to get himself back into things. Finding a partner was going to be a thing he had to do again but that just meant he had a new way to make more friends. The longer it took for him to find a partner the more people would suffer without him being able to help them.
As a way to help himself feel better Fritz decided to do one of his favorite thing, go swim. Heading out towards the pool Fritz was wearing his usual attire or red swim trunks, a blue open Hawaiian shirt, and some sandals. Perfect beach attire but it worked well enough for the desert environment that was Nevada. Leaving his house in the residential area it wouldn’t take too long for him to reach the school’s pool.
After a short walk Fritz arrived at his destination and walked into the closed off area that was the school’s pool. Looking around he noticed the distinct lack of people but didn’t think too much on it, people were busy with other things most likely. Finding one of the chairs that surrounded the pool he threw his shirt over it and placed his sandals on the ground next to it. Making sure to take anything out of his pockets he placed the contents on the chair as to avoid a far too familiar scenario. With his usual process done all that was left was to enjoy the pool!
Before jumping in however he took a look at the empty lifeguard seat and noticed the sign that listed what times the lifeguard would be on duty. Shibusen wasn’t as strict as some places when it came to pool rules but then again water represented a much lower threat to the average student than other things. If a pool was too much for someone to handle than a kishin egg was essentially a far off dream. Having already bested a kishin egg and being a great swimmer Fritz figured he was good to go in without supervision.
That done he took a few steps of a running start and dived into the watery depths of the pool. Falling to the bottom he righted himself and stood on the bottom before launching up and breaching through the surface. Shaking his head water splashed around him before he leaned back ad floated on his back. The sun smiling above him he let his body float around the pool as he contemplated what to do next. Today at least he was going to relax and postpone his worries for later.
Being in the water helped him relax and push his worries away. Closing his eyes he drifted in the water and his thoughts followed suit. Optimism returning to him he just had to let things happen and he was bound to find a meister in no time! Sure he was sort of an odd weapon and his soul certainly had its own slew of issues but he had done it once so he could do it again! He would find a meister and they would save people from the clutches of madness so that everyone could be happy.
A grin spreading on his face he kicked his feet a little to keep his body drifting and let the water flow against him. Maybe he would find someone and they could even manage soul resonance. The idea seemed like more of a wish with how his soul seemed to be but despite the occasional flare up of darkness it wasn’t that different from a normal soul. If he remained positive he was sure it could happen and as long as he kept telling himself that it certainly would! All he had to do was take the first step and find someone, but that could take some time so that just meant he had to make more friends.

Shibusen. A school and opportunity that seemed unreal. She was actually here! It didn’t matter how many times she thought about it, how many times she realized it, the small fact that she was in Death City and studying with special people to help rid the world of danger was exciting! Okay, so maybe it wasn’t a small fact. But having lived quite a bit longer than these children, the amount of time she spent here would be minimal in comparison, but… she was sure the experience would be grand! Niina held no doubts about that. No matter what, she was here to help people. And that is what this school did best. These thoughts had been consistent in her head for… well…. months. Since whenever the thought entered her head to push Sebastian towards the school. Even this day, when she really wasn’t quite sure what to do with herself, she was beyond excited. The young witch had met many people in the short few days she had been here, but none she had drawn exceptionally close to, yet. People needed time, and while people could be friendly, she had realized that trust wasn’t instant. Heck, she was a witch! Not even welcome at the school, so she should understand the patience and trusting thing, right? Still, getting to know people was one of the best things about life. The day had held a few conversations for her so far, even a short one with a teacher about what was expected of her. But the moments just flew by. For two reasons. 1. Talking to people was fun, and time flies when you’re having fun. 2. Her favorite part of the day was approaching. Swimming. Niina had already started a habit of blocking out time in the day to go swimming. Shibusen had a pool and she was going to utilize it! Especially since, sadly, there was no ocean or large body of water in… the desert. Knowing that time in the water was approaching, Niina quickly made her way back to the girls’ dorms. Changing out of her daily wear, she switched into a simple bathing suit. Simple in that… Niina tended to be a much more accessorized person. Making complex outfits for the mere reason that… it amused her. This three piece outfit was a large contrast to that normalcy. Bikini top, swim shorts, and semi-matching flip flops. Keys in hand, she left the dorms behind her and made her way to the pool. Niina could almost be described as skipping to it. She felt most comfortable in the water, especially now that she was surrounded by people who technically hunted her kind. It wasn’t cruel though, not in a way that it was dark. Even though people from the same school had killed her eldest sister… how could she blame them? Witches brought destruction and pain. They were a darkness on the world that only encouraged negativity. Somehow, her upbeat attitude had shifted to these thoughts, dampening her walk and spirit. Yet… she made it to the pool before she realized it. A mere three steps from the entrance to the enclosure, the blonde shook her head and instantly dismissed the thoughts. A bright smile returning to her face, she made her way into the place which held comfort for her. Her smile softening as the witch instantly relaxed in the familiar atmosphere of water, she made her way to one of the chair that lined the edge of the pool. The lack of people went unnoticed by Niina. Her senses were very quickly being enveloped by the water that was so close. She could almost feel it on her skin, and she hadn’t even jumped in yet! Laughing quietly, the girl discarded her keys onto the chair, as well as any other trinkets that didn’t belong in the water. Kicking off her sandals last, her eyes instantly shifted to the pool. Barely keeping herself from running, the girl’s foot hit the edge of the pool, she bent her knee and jumped both forward and upwards. Shifting her body position in the air, she brought her hands to cut through the water’s surface first with her body to follow. The amount of disturbed water was minimal, almost as if she just wanted to become part of it. The smile never leaving her face, her eyes closed as she remained submerged, Niina just took in the feel of the water against her skin. Each strand of hair suspended. Whole self surrounded by a complete different temperature and feel than air. Everything sounded different. Everything felt different. Kicking her feet and guiding her movements with her arms, she came to the top of the water. Just her head being exposed to the air, she took a breath in and opened her eyes. Kicking with her feet to stay above water and using her hands to move her hair from her face, she glanced around the pool. She had heard someone. Someone was here when she was beneath the water. It didn’t take long for her to locate the person. A golden boy, hair and skin, with red swimtrunks on. Raising her left hand into the air, she gave a slight wave in his direction, her smile ever remaining. Then, diving beneath the water again, Niina made her way towards him. She was in no rush, the water was more important. Usually, she might have even left him alone. But… He just felt so inviting! Eyes open beneath the water, she bit back the first slight sting of the chlorine, but kept looking where she was going, leisurely making her way towards him beneath the air. Surfacing again, Niina couldn’t exactly be sure the boy had seen her wave from earlier, or had seen her coming. If he was anything like her, he could be almost oblivious when surrounded by the gloriousness that was a body of water. But… not everyone was like her. Even now she wasn’t like her! Right hand pushing her blonde locks from her eyes again, she grinned and spoke to the boy. ”I don’t mean to disturb you, but I wanted to introduce myself.”Chuckling lightly, her eyes shifted to the space between them. Looking pleased, her eyes moved back to Fritz. She needed to make sure that she kept personal boundaries. Keeping a little distance between them. For herself, she tended to be comfortable with being close, but others usually liked a wider space. So, she tried to remember when she began speaking to someone. ”I’m Niina Rivera. Just got here a few days ago and I can’t say I’ve seen you around before. Though I should have! You look quite natural here in the water.”Her smile remaining constant, Niina held back from splashing the lad. ”So who’re you?”

Being in the water calmed Fritz to a point where his mind cleared and all he knew was the liquid around him. It was no beach but water under the heat of the sun was close enough for him. Now if only he could surf in the pool, then it would be perfect. Despite that it still held a certain aspect of his home and was far better than nothing. He hadn’t been to the pool recently enough and it was the perfect break from more serious things like his last mission. Washington was far too cold for him which only made him more thankful for the warmth of the sun on him.
Not wanting to bring up memories of that horrible mission he rid himself of the thoughts and focused more on the water and nothing else. He was perfectly content drifting in the water and not thinking about previous events. He failed to notice the wave that was directed at him as he was preoccupied with his own relaxing. The girl’s presence went undetected until the sound of her surfacing caught his attention. Opening his eyes he turned toward the sound and saw that the girl was looking at him and seemed to want to talk, wonderful!
Dropping his legs Fritz took on a more appropriate floating position and smiled at the girl as she began to speak. So she did want to introduce herself to him, awesome. Of course Fritz didn’t mind being interrupted from his thoughts if it meant that he could meet a new person and make a friend. From her words she seemed really nice but he could have guessed that from her going over to introduce herself to him in the first place. Listening to her introduction the smile remained on his face from the joy of meeting a new person.
”Nice to meet you Niina, I’m Fritz Ingram! I’ve been here for a bit now technically but I haven’t gotten to spend nearly enough time in the pool.”
That was sadly true for Fritz’s time at Shibusen. He had wandered around and found places to skateboard and discovered great places to get ice cream but the pool was one place he hadn’t spent much time with. It wasn’t that much of a loss though, now he would just have to spend more time at the pool to make up for the lost time! Hearing her say he looked natural in the water wasn’t far off from the truth, raising a hand to the back of his head he grinned while responding.
”Yeah I guess I am pretty familiar with the water, I’ve been around it for basically my whole life. What about you? You’re probably not that unfamiliar with the water if you’re here.”

It seemed the boy hadn’t noticed her!
At first, Niina wasn’t quite sure whether or not that was a good thing. On one hand, it meant he was absolutely in love with the water, right? Which, that was a wonderful thing! On the other hand, he may not particularly want to talk to her. However, the boy that had been floating on his back had completely changed position. Having a smile that easily matched with hers, the two floating and keeping their heads above water made the talking situation a tad bit easier.
The fact that he smiled was very important. Even fake, she had heard many things about that releasing chemicals into the body that made people more open to actually being happy. She couldn’t dare say he was faking it though, especially once she heard the golden boy speak. Like music to her ears, it was a friendly voice, openly inviting, and an obvious love for water was expressed.
“I don’t know if there could ever be enough time in the water!”
The girl chimed in with a laugh, using one push of both of her arms to move a bit away from him. Not necessarily to get away, but more to remind herself of the push and pull of the water. A satisfied grin on her face as her eyes watched the dancing light over the shifting water, Niina hadn’t quite forgot about him, but her attention had certainly been grasped for a small moment. Small indeed, for the smiling girl was instantly focused back on the boy. He just drew her in.
Letting a bit more of her sink into the water, she let both her mouth and nose slip beneath the surface. Her eyes remained on the lad, drops of water just avoiding her eyes as she exhaled slowly through her nose. His words were semi-muffled by the water that covered her ears now and then from the slight waving water in the pool, but she managed to hear what he had spoken. He was comfortable in the water, this much was already shown in how he relaxed alone in it, even so much as not really knowing she was there.
His whole life huh?
Her smile was still present, never having dropped away even beneath the water. Giving a bit of a kick up as well as gentle push from her arms and hands, she had her whole head above water again.
“It’s easily a second home to me. This is nowhere near the water I’m used to. Better than nothing, certainly, but I need the fish and the ocean. THAT would actually be my second home.”
Niina laughed as she spoke. A light sound, not the sort of reaction from something overly humorous or heartfelt. Pure joy, contentment, and belonging. Ducking beneath the surface again, she cut the water with both hands and moved one stroke closer to the boy. Back to where she started when speaking with him. Surfacing, inhaling, and grinning, the female spoke again.
“Not a lot of water in the desert here. And you look like you came from a lot of sun with that skin. Where you from?”
Pausing a moment as the girl who could never float still again shifted, her upper body leaned towards the right and she kicked to the left with her feet, her arms just barely floating over the water and directing her motions.
“We’ll be good swimming buddies.”
This thought was sort of added from the top of her mind, a light laugh accompanying these words as well. She didn’t mean them to be a binding contract. It more just struck her. Buddies they would be!

The girl’s comment to what he had said was all he needed to hear, she was going to be a great friend! It wasn’t like he was picky with who he became friends with but she seemed like a really fun person who also liked to spend time in the water. Being in the pool he couldn’t figure out exactly what she liked to do in the water but that hardly mattered just being in the water was fun even if the options of what to do in the pool were limited. As fun as this swimming was Fritz would do anything to be able to surf for even a little bit.
After her comment Niina moved away from him but it was clear she was just in full enjoyment of the water around them. He couldn’t blame her for that, he was more than happy to be in water after so long outside of it. Seeing how happy the water made Niina only seemed to boost his own enjoyment of it. Sinking a bit lower the water rose up his face stopping just under his nose as he adjusted into a more sitting position before giving up the attempt and returning to how he was floating.
From her words it sounded like Niina was like him at least in how they grew up. The ocean was definitely what he was more familiar with out of any form of water. Thinking about it he was probably more familiar with the ocean than he was with things around Shibusen. It was an interesting realization but one he could put more thought into when he wasn’t swimming if he remembered it. Leaning back he looked more towards the clear sky but spoke to Niina.
”Yeah, the ocean is definitely the best place to be! It’s just so much water and you can do so much. ”
Looking back down he saw that Niina had returned to her starting position and asked him another question. She didn’t remain in one position for long and was off again into the water. Since they were the only ones in the pool there wasn’t really a reason to stay in one place. Reclining back he began to float on his back before using his arms to bring him back into the flow of water.
”I’m from California, I do miss the beaches but coming here wasn’t so bad of a change.”
Putting his hands together Fritz descended under the water for a moment and twisted around so he was no longer on his back. Staying under for a few seconds he relaxed at the water all around him before pushing off of the bottom and breaking through the surface. Shaking the water off his head he took a breath and smiled.
”So what brings you here and away from the water? I’m here to learn more about weapon things and then I can help people!”
Of course he needed a meister before he could do much helping but that was just a minor detail. He wanted to know Niina’s reason for coming to Death City just out of curiosity and to know if she was a weapon or meister. If she was a weapon maybe they would have some classes together and if she was a meister well, he didn’t want to think too much about that and just see how things went.

This golden boy’s agreement on the wondrous ocean was amazing. She agreed wholeheartedly with him, which wasn’t surprising… since she stated her love first and then he agreed. Ha. What a wonderful circle of love for the ocean they could get into! Grinning to herself, her mind shifted to the ocean. Fritz had taken his eyes off her, so she felt no pressure in having to keep every single thought on him.
He was so right in the fact that there was so much to do. These Shibusen students couldn’t realize her witch side of things, but her familiar form was just as wonderful as this more human form. In the ocean she could be either, at any moment, and she would be at home. No one could deny a dolphin belonged in water and no one could deny Niina that she belonged there. The sun, sand, water, fish, people, games… She really did miss it. Well… she had sand. Lots of it!
Laughing quietly to herself, her thoughts of the desert brought her back to Fritz. This is where she was now. Death City. Shibusen. In a pool with a wonderful guy. And with that, his eyes were on her again. Well, for a bit. Just as she moved about the water with joy and ease, he did as well. Welcoming the flow, the reaction of the water to every movement, the pure feel of water surrounding the body. Too bad there were no fish! But for now, this Fritz character was enough.
His words came again. Where he was from. California! She spent a small amount of time there. Right before she came to Shibusen actually. Her and Sebastian. An easy grin on the blonde’s face, she watched Fritz submerge beneath the water. Giggling quietly, she gave light kicks away from him and one solid stroke from both of her arms. A little bit of distance, but not much. He was back up, shaking his shaggy head free of water. Squinting a bit and turning her head downwards, the girl laughed more readily. Splashing water here and there from him getting rid of his added water baggage.
Quieting her joy momentarily, she let him speak before she would retaliate. His words only excited her more. He was here to help people? He was almost beyond perfect! Nina would have liked him. Weren’t best friends supposed to weigh in on guys or something? She didn’t know.
“A lot of things brought me here.”
The girl answered him, a light smile on her face. Her words were accompanied by her right arm a little more than skimming across the water. Aiming the small wave of water in Fritz’ direction, she held back a further laugh.
“A lot of me being here is because… I thought I needed to encourage a friend. I think… this place will get him on a good path.”
The child-like joy was replaced with a softer and more understanding smile. Sebastian. Screwed up kid, but good down… somewhere. She hoped this school could help him get his head screwed on straighter. But.. she didn’t exactly have to join just for him, did she?
“But I guess also for me. I want to help people, like you. I want to make sure that those who choose darkness don’t snuff out the light and confuse others.”
Her words were absent of anger. Niina was an angry or hate filled girl, but she did know she wanted to protect and help people. That didn’t make her care less for those who lost their way. That was heartbreaking. But she couldn’t risk they would endanger others. A smile on her face, it never truly died. It wasn’t good to focus too long on the darkness that preyed on people.
“You said you’re a weapon, kinda. What kind?”
The grin light and carefree again, she brought both hands in front of her, slightly cupped, and pushed quickly at the top of the water to send a thin stream of water towards the boy. Laughing quietly, she followed up with another question.
“From my understanding, getting out to help people requires partners. Does your partner swim? Maybe we could all be pool buddies!”
The laughter from before still rang in her words, a light kick and pushing the water from in front of her to behind her brought her closer to the Californian. Well… probably a little closer than most were comfortable with, a little less than a foot of space between them that she hadn’t quite noticed.

It had been so long Fritz barely remembered how much fun it was to just swim around in a pool with somebody. Being able to move and flow certainly added to the conversation, or at least the joy that was derived from it. Not to say the conversation would be less fun considering how fun Niina seemed to be but the pool was an added level of fun! With some water still dripping off of the ends of his hair he looked to Niina as she was about to speak.
By a lot of things he assumed she meant more than the two forces that had pulled him to the school and was excited to hear. It was always interesting to learn why other people decided to attend Shibusen, especially when their circumstances didn’t require it like his. Fritz made no attempt to avoid the wave she sent his way. Being in the path of even a small wave like that was still reminiscent of the larger waves at home. Oh so she came with somebody else, that meant she already had a friend with her.
At the rest of her answer he couldn’t help but smile at her. It was great to hear that her reason aligned with his. Some people wanted to grow stronger or just hunt down kishin eggs but finding someone else that prioritized helping others was uplifting. Her wording also managed to resonate with him, specifically the use of darkness. Protecting the light and resisting the darkness was of the utmost importance, at least to him. Preventing the darkness from taking and hurting others was important, the less suffering that occurred because of that force the better the world would be. The lack of anger in her words also relieved Fritz of some hidden motive driven by darkness, not that he would be able to blame her if that was the case.
Floating freely in the water he let the flow push him around as he let the words of Niina sink in. He never planned to meet such a fun person in the pool randomly but maybe the water just attracted them. Regardless it was great and he got to make a great friend out of the encounter! He really should find out if Niina was a weapon or meister to see if they would have any classes together or have to stick woth being pool buddies but her words pulled him away from the thought.
”Oh, I’m a demon key. Not a very conventional form but it works almost like a blunt sword in a way.”
Trying to explain his weapon form was a bother and something he really should be better at by now. His voice was a touch quieter with his explanation than his the rest of their conversation. Even after taking a mission he still wasn’t that comfortable with his weapon form, the loss of his meister probably didn’t assist with that issue.
The negative thoughts were broken by a stream of water hitting him and bringing his focus off of the bad and back onto the present. Not that the present was exceedingly positive but it was better than dwelling on his weapon form. How to explain his answer was another thing bur he could probably manage that better than the previous. Bobbing in the water slightly he looked up to gather his thoughts before bringing his attention back to Niina and getting a smile back on his face,
”About that, my partner had to return home after our first mission and I guess something must have happened so…I’m officially unpartnered again. So the pool buddies won’t exactly work with them so well.”
Noticing the sudden approach Fritz remained floating where he was. Niina’s seeming pattern of moving into a close proximity was amusing to him more than anything. Remaining where he was Fritz waited for a response, mostly to his weapon form.

As Niina tried to pinpoint what sort of deadly weapon this golden boy might be, she could not think of anything to fit him. Weapons always seemed so aggressive and painful. Fritz wasn’t like that. It was hard for her to picture him as something that caused destruction. Not that she felt it was bad that he was a weapon, obviously she felt great good from the place, what it does, and the students it had. She just couldn’t picture this smiley, good-natured boy as a weapon.
And then it all fit. A demon key. While his other words had indeed registered, Niina’s mind was fixated on the first part. A key. Fritz was a key! It just seemed to fit him. At least… better than some sort of club, sword, or gun. An excited grin on her face, the girl couldn’t find words right away. She also hadn’t noticed the slight change in Fritz’ demeanor. It never occurred to her that he may not be particularly at ease with his weapon form, it was just so neat!
Her mind catching up with her, Niina was just beginning to notice the slight change to Fritz. Not that he seemed sad or upset.. just a bit off. She wasn’t sure how to explain it. She would have said something, but a splash seemed to fix most of it! A smile back on the boy’s face, Niina eagerly greeted his look. Then was met with such sad news.
“That’s a shame… but I’m sure things will turn up! Even if three of us can’t be pool buddies, I certainly would like to spend time with you on a regular basis.”
Replying right away this time, she tried not to let her chipperness drop. Pity and sadness didn’t do much to bring people’s spirits up. Niina wasn’t quite sure what he had been thinking about before but didn’t want to draw out more negatives. Think on the good points! She had met him and found him absolutely wonderful. Bringing her right hand between them, back of her hand facing upwards and palm towards the bottom of the pool, the tip of her middle finger rested against her thumb. Hand just barely skimming above the water, she then applied pressure to the tips of her fingers. FLICK. Her middle finger springing forward, she sent water towards the face of the male who was only a short distance from her. Chuckling lightly, she moved her hand back out to the side of her, assisting in keeping her afloat.
“And about your weapon form, I think it’s wonderful. From what little I know of you, I think it fits you. You’re like the key to happiness.”
A light smile on her face, she chuckled quietly, swimming a bit away from him. Once she was a bit away from him, she took a deep breath and ducked herself beneath the water. Swimming to the side of the pool, she resurfaced just at the edge. Her hands parting the hair from her eyes, she then placed her palms up on the edge of the pool. Hoisting herself out with a mixed combination of upper body movement and a sneaky little flight boost, she had herself up, turned, and promptly sat down on the edge of the pool. Grinning, her eyes searched for the golden boy she had left. Kicking her feet in the water, hands still on the edge of the pool, she spoke loud enough for him to hear.
“I have no doubts that you’ll find someone to team up with again soon.”
An encouraging smile was easily placed on her face, but she still had not lost her joyfulness either. A quick laugh, her eyes traveled upwards. More thinking than anything, but her expression never faltered. Should she be hoping to partner? That seemed to be the goal of the place. But… there was that whole souls thing. For now, she needed to focus on Fritz though. Not some later problem.
“Even I think it would be fun to swing a big key around. My friend and I came as meisters. I could introduce you to him!”
The more playful grin had returned, her gaze finding Fritz again as she thought of Sebastian. Fritz could probably do the guy some good. Though… she didn’t want to bog her new friend down either. Sebastian was… quite a handful. She loved him to death. But the man needed to loosen up and feel things. Not be the statue he always had to be. Nah… She still needed to work on Sebastian. Fritz couldn’t put up with that silly guy.

His concerns were most likely nothing to worry about but he couldn’t help but be anxious until he heard Niina’s response to his weapon form. She seemed like a really nice person so he shouldn’t expect a negative reaction but that didn’t mean it was impossible. Having a negative reaction in a positive way might even make it worse to deal with. She might laugh and assume he was joking about what his weapon form was, who had a weapon form like a key anyway? When she began to speak Fritz prepared himself for what was to come only to be met with a response to what he said after.
Well hearing her words definitely made him feel more relaxed and it lowered the likelihood that she was going to respond harshly to his weapon form. The smile remaining on his face he wasn’t sure what exactly to say in response to that. Of course the feeling was mutual but after having negative thoughts about his weapon form his mind was still catching up. Any progress he made with a response was lost when the water hit his face. Having some fun with it Fritz moved backwards from the splash and floated back a little.
If it was possible Fritz’s smile grew when he heard her words about his weapon form. He wasn’t entirely sure if he agreed that it fit him but just having a positive reaction to it in general was enough to make him feel better. Before he could answer her however she ducked under the water and headed toward the edge of the pool. Seeing where she was headed he followed on his back with a few lazy strokes and kicks. Once she reached the edge and made it up he moved closer to the edge and let his legs sink under the water so he could look at her while floating.
”Thanks, for the compliment and the encouragement! I never really thought about my weapon form like that but you do have a point. I’ll just have to keep finding fun people and see if anyone happens to be compatible.”
His smile receding slightly into a joyful one that didn’t take up the majority of his face he kicked his feet to float with his own thoughts. Sure he sounded positive and the idea was simple enough but he felt like finding a meister would be more difficult than that. Even if they were compatible they had to be ok with wielding a giant key as a weapon and accept that it would be more difficult than other weapons. Pushing the thoughts away he focused on the present and not the potential future.
Even without meaning to Fritz found her words causing him to grow a tad excited. He knew it wasn’t what she meant but the words still caused a fragment of hope inside him to react. If he focused too much on it he would only end up disappointing himself when it didn’t work. Despite the increased beat he felt his heart taking he remained as calm outwardly as he could.
”That sounds like a great idea! I’d love to meet your friend, more people is more fun after all.”
Floating slightly closer to the edge of the pool he looked up with a grin to see what reaction Niina would have to what he said next.
”If you want you can try to wield me. I don’t know if we’d be compatible or anything but no harm in trying. Plus if you just got here you probably haven’t tried to match wavelengths before, it can be a bit strange to do without having done it before.”
Now it was a matter of waiting and seeing how she responded. As much as he knew he shouldn’t expect much he couldn’t help it. Even if they didn’t match just trying would be great. Lacking a meister he hadn’t transformed into his key form in a while and seeing if he could match wavelengths with his new friend would be some practice. The last thing he wanted was to be rusty when he did find a new meister.

Even though she wasn’t mostly surrounding by water now, sitting out of it and kicking at it lightly with her feet was amusement enough. She was comfortable in the water, comfortable here. The real reason she had gone for the side of the pool is she thought she might want to jump in again. While one could kinda sorta jump in and out of the water from the water, it was a whole lot harder as a human when compared to a dolphin. Best fix to that, that she could think of, was exiting the water and jumping in again!
For now she put that on hold. She didn’t want to miss a thing Fritz said and it seemed he was ready to pay a lot of attention her as well. The conversation had continued on for a short while, even through both of their movements and antics. Now the boy had followed her, somewhat at least. Her hands still lightly gripping to the edge of the pool, her upper body leaned forward towards the floating boy.
Partnering. That’s what he had commented on. Was it really all that difficult? He sounded maybe worried before and even now he had to find someone ‘compatible.’ How hard was this partnering thing? Contemplating this new and foreign situation, the girl’s eyes traveled upwards. While the smile dimmed, it didn’t completely leave her face. However, one could easily tell she was thinking about something. The focused face, the upwards glance with a slightly glazed over look, her fingers tapping lightly against the pool edge.
Fritz snapped her back to the here and now. His excited voice was lovely to her ears. The grin brightening again, the girl’s attention shifted back to the golden boy. Fun. Sebastian being fun. Niina had to laugh at this. Leaning forward a little bit more, the small blonde laughed harder than she probably should. But still, Sebastian described as ‘fun’ was quite something. Still somewhat giggling as she straightened her back a small bit, she brought her right hand up to wipe a stray tear from her eye.
“Sebastian is like a big pet rock. Not sure I’d call him ‘fun,’ but he is a dear friend.”
Interesting was probably a good word. An individual like no other she had met before. But then again, Fritz wasn’t really like anyone she had met before. The closest person she could compare him to was Nina. And to the little witch, that would certainly be a compliment!
In her time of laughter and words about Sebastian, Fritz had gotten himself just a bit closer. While this didn’t totally register with Niina, his words certainly did. Her smile dropped away. Not that her face held any sadness or displeasure, but the girl was caught off guard, confused, and very uncertain. The first sentence is what caused the immediate reaction, her expression still hadn’t changed much by the time Fritz had finished speaking.
A small bit of… fear? Nervousness? crept into her. Niina wasn’t quite sure exactly what it was that she felt but it was keeping her from saying yes to his proposition. Part of her was certain there was no harm in trying, but the other part wondered what another would see if trying to be compatible. Would they know she was a witch? Worry was slowly etching itself into her face, the hand that had not too long ago wiped away joyful tears had made its way in front of her and circled around her opposite arm. Bright eyes avoided the golden child, looking away and down to the right side. What should she do?
She couldn’t do it. Niina couldn’t risk being chased away from the school. What if something happened to Sebastian because of her actions? She couldn’t leave him until he found a friend or a partner… He wouldn’t get any better being here without her… When Niina turned to face Fritz again she looked apologetic, like she was ready to plead with him to not be angry with her.
“Fritz, I’m sorry I-”
Something stopped her, the words catching in her throat. Her eyes shifted quickly over him, her expression shifting quickly from apologetic to contemplation once again. Something was pulling her to him. Not physically, but… he felt right. What ‘right’ meant, Niina couldn’t tell ya. But she knew she couldn’t tell him ‘no.’ She didn’t want to tell him ‘no.’
A smile settling easily back on her lips, the little blonde leaned forward again, extending her right hand out to him.
“I want to try.”
The words were sincere, matching the honest smile that had found its way back to her. But soon, the spark returned, more of a grin taking place of the innocence of before. Chuckling lightly along with her next words, she never pulled her hand away.
“But you have to help me. I don’t understand this matching and partnering nonsense yet!”

Fritz wasn’t sure exactly what he had said but it seemed to have prompted some thought in Niina. What she was thinking about had him curious but he had no real way to know. Her smile dimmed a little so the subject was probably of a more serious nature or at least something less fun. It was strange after seeing Niina be as happy as she was but at least it wasn’t a negative change. Luckily it didn’t last too long and somehow his comment about her friend made her laugh it away.
Hearing more about her friend did explain a little more about her sudden laughter. Imagining someone that could be called a pet rock was difficult, he would have to see that to understand. Most people had something interesting about them and in Shibusen it seemed like almost everybody had something that made them fun. Plus he was friends with Niina and she was tons of fun so how bad could he be? With her smile returned it was easy to see when it dropped again from his words. Unlike the last time it was obvious what he had said to cause the reaction, not that he wasn’t at least partially expecting the reaction.
At least he had made the attempt to ask but it looked like a failed outcome was going to happen. She didn’t respond right away and that could mean she was thinking it over but it didn’t seem that way. Even if she was thinking it over the negatives of partnering with him probably worked against him. If she just tried to wield him there was no problem but if they were compatible she would need a reason to not partner with him. The hesitance made that seem like the most likely situation to Fritz.
Seeing that she was avoiding looking at him only seemed to make his fears more likely. Unlike before she wasn’t looking up in thought but down as if there was something more troubling. From his perspective the most likely reason was that she didn’t want to partner with a demon key. As cool as she had made it sound there was still the practicality of using a key to think about. Waiting for the obvious response Fritz sunk a little into the water but remained looking at Niina for her answer.
Niina faced him and began to speak what he expected. It was worth a try asking at least and he was glad to at least have managed that. Before she got to her reasoning though there was a break and another pause. Fritz waited for her to continue and moved back up in the water, using the movement down to make him just bob in the water. It confused him when she got a smile on her face and extended a hand to him after her previous words. The next things she said caught him completely off guard but he remained bobbing in the water and returned the smile.
The previous hesitance all but forgotten Fritz nodded at Niina as she mentioned not knowing about matching wavelengths. It had been a while since he had done it himself and even then he was going off of feeling more than anything. Trying to remember a little of what he had heard in class there had to be something that would help in this situation. Recalling a few scraps of information he put them together into something helpful. Mixed with his prior experience and things should be as good as they could be.
”No problem, it sounds harder than it is. Alright umm both people should be calm and of one mind. Ok, just think about…water! If we both do that everything should go great! I can handle any detail stuff probably.”
If they were compatible his idea should work, now it was just a matter of seeing what happened. Taking a deep breath he dipped lower into the water to collect his thoughts as well as get a better idea of what to focus on. Looking at Niina his grin shifted into an expression of having a sudden thought.
”Oh! You may want to use two hands.”
Done he focused on the water he was in and lifted his left hand out of it. Closing his eyes he brought his left arm up and stopped when it was near Niina’s right arm and directed at her chest. A moment to collect his focus and Fritz let out a breath and transformed. His body became encompassed by a golden white light and gathered with his arm as the center-point. Where his left hand was the light expanded into a bell made of light and from there the rest of his weapon formed. Taking on the shape of a giant key the form could be seen clearly thought the weapon was made entirely of light.
A second later and the light broke away to reveal the true weapon form. Where his arm had been was a yellow bell shaped guard with a silver chain and keychain connected to it. From the guard was a small blue bracer and then a silver shaft of the key. The teeth pointed down to the water and could be seen as flat, squared off tips with round circular teeth between. Once the light had left and the key was formed gravity once again took hold of Fritz.

He was just bobbing up and down in the water. It was cute. Niina was also glad that he had waited for her. Fritz hadn’t pushed her one way or the other. Didn’t cut her off and say that she didn’t have to, didn’t try to lay on the guilt and make her. This golden boy just let her choose her own fate. He really was an amazing person. Maybe this school just had a way of drawing amazing people to it? Or she could just have been incredibly lucky to have him be one of the first people she met.
Hand still outstretched, a playful grin on her face, she awaited for his response. He looked pleased and she was glad. Niina felt a small pang of guilt about not really weighing Fritz’ reaction into her earlier decision. If she would have said ‘no,’ she could have really hurt him. And that wouldn’t have been great at all to do… But regardless, she had said yes and was now getting advice! He had a partner, so he had done this before… That fact both calmed some thoughts and stirred others. She wouldn’t have to worry as much about what was going on with souls and not understanding, but she should have been more cautious about him being closer to her own soul.
Oh well. Too late now. She’d just have to experience and enjoy!
Laughing a bit, she was pretty much amused by everything he said. Sounds harder than it is, she certainly hoped that was true. And water. That’s what he thought of to make them of the same mind. He was so excited and it was refreshing. She was glad that she accepted his offer. Nodding a bit to show she had been listening, she just continued smiling and tilted her head somewhat to the side.
“Sounds like a good plan.”
Then his expression quickly changed and she almost worried. Almost. But he just thought of something else. This was quickly expressed in words as well, which caused Niina to look a bit confused.
“Two… hands?”
Wasn’t he a key? Sure she had joked before about how fun it would be to swing a big key around, but… How big exactly was his weapon form? Watching the golden child, she never took her arm away. She didn’t know if he’d need to grab it, or he wanted help out of the pool, or what. So she would never take her arm back until she was sure he didn’t need it. When she thought he was going to make contact, he stopped. His left arm stayed hovering directly in front of her, beside her own arm. He had closed his eyes, probably focusing on the water or transforming. She couldn’t focus on the water though, not yet. This was so neat! He was going to transform for her!
A giddy smile had made its way back onto her face, the confusion about needing two hands put off for the moment. A light shone around the male, golden to match the rest of him. Chuckling for a single moment, she watched his body shift from that of a boy to that of a key. The light broke away in no time at all, the colors of his weapon now obvious. He was just lovely. Golden boy or huge key.
Wait…. huge key?
Gravity took hold, Niina’s arms circled around the bell shape as she hugged him to her chest. A sheepish smile taking place of that early giddiness along with a semi-apologetic look.
“heh… I forgot.”
Most of the key still not even really being held by her, she shifted to hold him against her with just her left arm, then pressed her right hand back against the ground behind her. Pushing herself into the water, she submerged both of them. He was bigger and heavier than she thought he would be. Right hand grasping to the bell, she pulled him from her immediate body, holding him out in front of her now with both hands. The chlorine stung her eyes a bit as she looked him over but she also felt… strange.
Niina hadn’t totally been thinking about water like he had instructed, she got way too caught up in the majesty of him being golden and a wonderful key. But even more so than before, she just wanted to be around him, like she could have hugged his key form to her forever. The sheepishness had long died away, looks of fascination and joy back to her face. The girl was a piece of cake to read if you looked at her. But she was happy. She didn’t understand the souls thing. Didn’t quite understand how she felt him. Found it odd that this key she was holding was also a living person, and that was the reason why holding it didn’t feel like a normal object.
Time under water was drawing to a close though. The light pressure in her chest for needing more oxygen was growing stronger. Shifting her hold on Fritz again, she circled her right arm under the bell and reached with her left hand towards the pool edge as she swam over to it. Both kicking with her feet and pulling herself so her head was above water, she propped her left elbow up onto the edge of the pool. Shifting the beautiful key again, she dropped him from her immediate grasp, grabbed the shaft with her right hand and lifted him a bit so she could also grab just beneath the bell on the shaft with her left hand, elbow still holding her up out of the water.
“You’re just gorgeous.”
The girl said with a smile, laughing quietly after a moment and then shaking her head to get some of the hair directly out of her eyes.

With the sight of Niina and the pool gone Fritz was surrounded by the endless darkness of his weapon form. Despite his weapon being under the effects of gravity Fritz was simply floating in the abyss of darkness that surrounded him. Even though he had found a meister and collected a corrupt soul being in his full weapon form still was an uncommon experience to him. Relaxing he focused on the feeling of water that he was just in to keep the sensation in mind. Looking around the darkness the next step was to bring the outside world back into perspective.
Around him came the image of the pool, the water around him, and Niina by the pool’s edge. Everything around him was lit by the golden white light that accompanied his transformation and he couldn’t help but admire the reflection of the light off the water of the pool. All of his previous transformations had been over land so he never got the chance to see the effect. Once the light broke Fritz saw the effect of gravity on him more than he felt it. It only lasted a moment before Niina stopped him by wrapped around the guard.
Fritz’s initial reaction to the hands holding him was confusion. He did tell her two hands might be better to holding him but he failed to expect that she would use the guard of his weapon form to hold onto instead of the handle. It didn’t make much difference in simple holding purposes it just caught him off guard. The next moment was more confusing than simple hand placement as she moved into the water and he felt her wavelength. If they didn’t sync wavelengths the water would help offset the weight of his weapon but it was still new to him.
Under the water Fritz concentrated on the liquid around him as well as the new wavelength he felt. It wasn’t far off from what he expected Niina’s wavelength to be like but regardless of expectations matching was different. He could feel her wavelength as it was and how his own interacted with it. Concentrating on the two was easy and with a little work brought them closer to synchronization. The weight of his weapon should have lessened for Niina but there was some dissonance from his own soul and something he didn’t know from her. It wasn’t present when Xenix had used him but it made him feel odd but better.
Niina began to move toward the surface which was expected and Fritz waited for her to reach it. As fun as it was being under the water as a weapon she didn’t have his luxury of not needing to breath. Some odd handling again but it worked and they breached the surface of the pool and were on the edge. Hearing her comment Fritz remained silent to let the words sink in and not respond embarrassingly. After he was over the embarrassment his face appeared in the teeth of the key and he smiled at Niina.
”Thanks! That was really fun. Your wavelength wasn’t that hard to match up with either, it felt different than matching with my old meister but it’s a cool feeling!”
Whatever it was that he was feeling did make him feel different but it was enjoyable. It also didn’t seem to cause any problems with them matching wavelengths so there wasn’t a problem. Of course the matching wasn’t too difficult and that meant as much relief as it meant problems. She did agree to wield him but that didn’t mean she wanted to partner with him. Deciding to stay subtle and see what happened he thought of an indirect way to ask.
”So, what do you think?”
She had already complimented his form so that was a plus. At least he had been able to help her get more familiar with weapons either way. If she didn’t want to partner with him he was sure it would help with whoever she did partner with.

Niina… didn’t exactly know what was going on. Being submerged in water had definitely calmed any second thoughts she had about her witchiness being shown to Fritz. Then, she had been too completely wrapped up in looking at him to really focus on her own soul. It didn’t come naturally to her and she didn’t quite understand it. In her travels and with being at home, she never really thought about focusing on her own soul. Focusing on her magic, how it applied to her personality… but never really the soul. And that’s what this place was all about.
Somehow, fate had looked down on her with love. This boy was wonderful in so many ways and was even easing her into the whole souls thing. Sure, she felt… something. But it was all new and weird. There was no way she was helping Fritz out, he definitely was doing whatever work was required. Whatever that meant… However, she would never be discouraged. A boy with a lovely personality, great passions, and a beautiful weapon form was with her.
At present, she had her head above water, propped up by her elbow, still holding onto Fritz’ weapon form. He was quite large, and it was funny that he might be as tall as her in weapon form. He really was a big key, she should have expected as much. A light smile had never left the blonde girl’s face, she wouldn’t be able to fight that expression away any time soon. After speaking, she was met with silence.
She guessed that made sense. Weapons didn’t usually talk, why would a living weapon? Did she have to hold him a certain way to help him change back. Glancing him up and down, from his bell to the teeth, she looked a bit confused. Not overly so, definitely not losing her smile, but somewhat unsure. It didn’t stress her, Fritz would let her know one way or another, but she’d like to help!
Then she hear him. And saw him. Having glanced back and forth over the key, she was a bit startled to see his face appear. Her hands gripping just slightly more on him at the initial suprise, she let out a short laugh even while he talked. Niina definitely heard him, but she couldn’t help herself. She hadn’t expected his face to pop out of nowhere!
An easy smile settling back onto her face, she kept her gaze on the face that appeared from the teeth.
“I don’t totally get it. I never really focused on my soul before. And adding someone else is even stranger!”
She chuckled a bit at this, not so much embarrassed as amused. She was glad he described it as fun. More glad that he said they ‘matched.’ And the most glad that nothing was said about her witchiness.
“I feel like I don’t even know what I’m feeling!”
Her words mixed with a sort of laughter this time. She hadn’t understood the whole wavelength thing, even with the few classes that had gone over it. It was just… hard. For her at least. Worrying about it was far from her mind though. After all, the first time she was supposed to think on it she was given Fritz! Not that he should do all the work, but he would help her. He was just that kind of person.
The next question was asked before she could delve into the confusing realm of wavelengths and souls. What did she think? A bright grin crossed her face at that question. Letting go of him with her left hand, she still held him firmly with the right and took the moment to change her left hand position. Instead of holding him like a precious item, she decided to take his handle this time instead of the bell. A weapon instead of a treasure!
Once she had him firmly in her grasp with her left hand, she switched her body position with a quick turn. Right hand letting go of Fritz, she grabbed for the pool wall once she let her left elbow slide off it and turned. Right hand helping to keep her above the water, she lifted Fritz’ form teeth up into the air, extending her left arm upwards. The motion pushed her down into the water a bit, right hand not quite keeping her up. Laughing lightly once again, she spoke.
“I think you should stay by my side and we shall be the team of light that dispels the world’s darkness!”
Barely finishing her words, the girl was tipping over to the side, away from the wall. Her right hand letting go of the wall and she gladly let her body fall back beneath the water. She wasn’t planning on letting him go either, not if he didn’t want her to. He was too wonderful to want to turn down. Besides, would she ever find another weapon at this school as great as him to work with?!

When his face appeared in the teeth of the key it seemed to catch Niina off-guard but she responded with laughter shortly after. It made sense if he thought about it considering her lack of previous experience with weapons. How was she supposed to know his face would suddenly show up like that? Even with the surprise she didn’t seem to be too startled by it and passed it off without any further thought. With her smile returned he waited to hear what she said about his comment and just wielding him in general.
He couldn’t really blame her for not getting everything right away. The only reason he knew as much as he did was because he had experienced it firsthand to figure it out. Even if she didn’t fully get it he managed to be able to make it work with what she did know. As long as they were able to match up there wasn’t much of a problem that couldn’t be figured out once they both knew more about what they were doing. Of course that was if she wanted to try an actual partnership with him. Either way being wielded again was fun and he had hopefully helped her at least a little bit.
Before she answered his second question Niina altered her hold on him into a more practical one with a hand on the proper handle of the key. Remaining silent his form faded from the teeth of the key and he waited and watched as Niina moved him around. Seeing the pool change and his view lifted up Fritz felt a sense of joy rising along with his weapon form. After the motion was completed Fritz reappeared in the teeth of the key with a smile on his face to match Niina’s laughter.
Her words were a tad overdramatic but that didn’t matter considering what she said. They could be a great team and help a bunch of people! He wasn’t sure exactly how to respond but he was too excited to think too much about it. With the smile still on his face he remained in the teeth of the key so he could speak to Niina and not be a full weapon like she wasn’t used to.
”I think that’s a great idea! We’ll help a bunch of people for sure!”
With that done he let his image fade and stayed how he was as Niina fell back. He certainly wasn’t going to resist going into the water again so it was just a matter of enjoying it until he left. Spending some more time with Niina might help her get more of a feel for wavelengths as well so they would be even better off for missions. He hadn’t gotten that much practice with Xenix and they had done alright but they would have benefitted from a little bit more. With Niina they would just have to work harder to get great so they could help everyone!
