Grocery shopping was something Arlie liked to do. She and Zia attempted to split up who did what around the dorm room as far as chores went, obviously switching it up every other week, but the blonde generally leapt at the chance to run to the store. It was a chance to get some sun and mingle in the crowds of the shopping district, not to mention a good enough workout carrying the bags home, though the Texan usually had no problem with such things. Getting a walk in was also good for her or, in today’s case, a skate. Arlie glided into the store easily and halted by the baskets, picking one up and slinging it onto one arm before continued on in. Humming jauntily to a tune she’d had stuck in her head for days, she paused near the produce section and removed a small piece of paper from her back pocket. “Alright, let’s see what we got here.” Grey eyes flitted over the list rater quickly. She was cooking a lot this week, so most of the list involved ingredients for the southern comfort food Arlie was best at. She could make other things, sure, but who would pass up a chance to make biscuits and gravy? Nobody, that’s who. Raising her other hands to count off, Arlie quietly read aloud what she needed, “Lesse…corn, tomatoes, okra, onions, and peas. Let’s git to it!” Nodding to herself in a way that made the curls of her ponytail bounce, she pocketed the list again and went about gliding through the piles of fruits and vegetables before her. She plucked a bag of onions up and tossed it in the basket, repeating the gesture with a small box of cherry tomatoes since they were easier to carry and didn’t go bad as quickly. Peas she could get from the frozen section to make things easier. Gliding backwards on her skates along where most of the leafy greens were, she scanned the area for okra. It was a more common thing to see in the south, but she didn’t know if that included Nevada. Arlie had grown up on it, and while she knew that it was an acquired taste for most, she couldn’t get enough of the stuff. Spying what she needed at last, Arlie punched the air and grinned, “Yes! Thank goodness!” Not that she couldn’t have survived otherwise, but she bagged it and tossed it happily in the basket nonetheless. Turning either foot sideways so she wouldn’t roll away and bonk into anything, Arlie retrieved the list from her back pocket once more and looked it over, counting again on her hand that didn’t hold the basket and softly saying what she needed aloud. “Next we need more flour it looks like, some butter, some cream…hmmm…” The blonde trailed off for a moment, appearing to be concentrating as she consulted her mental map of the store, determining where she needed to go next.

Yet another day and another walk about for Zane as he strolled through the city. It was a quiet day for him, as Kaylin was off somewhere else. In a weird way life started to become a little dull not having her around, being used to her "energy" and her "personality" certainly made life more interesting which it brought a mystery to it, what type of things would the day bring with her around, but she was off doing who knows what, and Zane had did enough training this week to give himself a nice day off and just do whatever! It was a nice day outside so it was perfect time to check out where all the shopping
Zane found himself window shopping, just looking through all the windows, he had the intent to buy something but so far nothing really caught his eye. Still he spent most of the day checking out all the different types of stores the city had to offer. One clothing store caught his eye, as he began to walk over to it a smell caught his attention. Before he stepped foot in the clothing store looked to his left to notice the smell was coming from the market. He shifted his body and followed the smell right into the market, he stopped at the doorway.
He realized that between training, school, and Kaylin he hadn't had time to do any real shopping for food, and this was the perfect opportunity to do it! As he stepped into the market, he noticed a girl on skates. "Skates!!!!! In a store??? How....odd" He thought to himself. As he was looking at her he noticed she was looking at a piece of paper, probably a list of things she needed. He glanced around the store and looked at the other shoppers, they all were either looking at their own list or had one in their hand.
"I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT I NEED!" he told himself.
Scratching his head he thought to himself that he could go all the way back home and make a list, or he can just try to think what he needs while he's here. He decided to go with the latter, he walked forward and took a basket, he looked around at the different isle to try and see if anything popped out at him as a reminder what he needs. Sadly nothing came to mind, with a small shrug he began to just walk the isles, looking at the different things and just place random items in hi basket.
He found himself at the healthy food isle, now here was a section of stuff he could buy plenty of and be satisfied till his next visit to the store. He grabbed a couple of different types of fruits and vegetables, they looked fresh and good, so he gave off a small smile. Next he found himself in the flour isle, as he looked at the bags he was debating if he should get some or not, after a few moments he decided just to grab some and if he used it great, if not then at least he had some. Once he placed it in the basket he looked at the isle to see if he needed anything else from here, being satisfied he proceeded to the next isle while looking don at his basket.

With her eyes on the list, Arlie didn’t even take note of the redheaded youth that had entered the store. By the time the blonde decided she had the next three items locked in her short term memory, the bright smile was back and it was time to roll off on her way! Skating at a slow pace, she came across the dairy products first. Ceasing her movement and letting herself coast, Arlie scanned the rows until they landed on one of the things she needed. Turning her feet sideways to break, she plucked a box of butter from the shelves and tossed it into her basket.
Growing bored with two feet, she pushed off again and sailed a ways on one foot before seeing the next thing she needed. Wobbling a bit as she set her other foot down, Arlie looked over the rows of milk and like products before spying what she wanted. Sliding smoothly to the side as she pulled open the glass barrier, she snatched a carton of heavy cream and added it to her steadily growing stash of groceries. That was done, now onward to the baking aisle!
Sunny disposition lighting up her face and putting a joyous gleam in her eye, Arlie skidded around a corner and wove through the other visitors with ease, growing in speed until she reached her destination. Slowing down since there was another person in the aisle, she turned this way and that looking for what she needed. Turning, she skated backwards at a snail’s pace, arms crossed with a pensive expression hanging on her features. Sailing along at speed fit for a slug was no doubt comical but when Arlie finally found what she was looking for…it was out of reach.
Pouting, Arlie stared up at the flour that was currently taller than her. If she weren’t on skates she could jump for it, but that was currently out of the question. Climbing the shelves was also not an option as that would end just as badly. Hands on her hips, she stared down her problem until an idea hit her like a lightning bolt. Whipping her head around in a way that had the blonde curls of her ponytail smacking her in the face, her eyes found the red haired boy as he moved along. “Wait!”
Realizing that was a bit loud and a bit sudden, Arlie gave a bit of a nervous laugh, the grin on her face growing more bashful. Going pigeon toed and pointing at the flour, Arlie spoke quieter this time, “Sorry, but could I ask you to help me reach that? I’d jump for it but with my skates n’ all that seemed about as bright as tuggin’ on a rattler’s tail.”

As Zane continued to walk toward the end of the aisle staring down at his basket, more precisely he was looking at that bag of flour he put in it. Still debating if he should have taken it in the first place. What could he make with it? Cake? Pie? Bread? Most of this stuff he wouldn't normally eat, so this was really not worth getting. Then again he could always use it for when he had company over, but he wasn't great in the "social" department seeing as how he didn't have many friends at Shibusen yet, and the only person who was over all the time was his partner.
He looked up and proceeded to turn the aisle, he would keep in mind if he should take the flour or not when he would be getting ready to leave, for now he would continue to shop.
"Wait!" a loud voice said.
When the sound of someones voice reached Zane's ears, it startled him a bit. Being in such a deep though about flour, any loud sound would have got him to jump a bit. Not being sure if someone was trying to get his attention he looked around in front of him and didn't see anyone in particular, the people that were there were minding their own business. He turned his head around to look behind him when he noticed the girl in skates he saw earlier staring at him from the flour aisle. Since she was the only in the store who was really looking at him it was safe to say she was calling him, so he turned his body to face her, and like a little nervous bot he took his left hand and pointed it at himself to confirm if she indeed told Zane to wait.
Giving off a bit of a weird laugh and a grin like facial expression she spoke to him. "Sorry, but could I ask you to help me reach that? I’d jump for it but with my skates n’ all that seemed about as bright as tuggin’ on a rattler’s tail.”
"tuggin on a rattlers tail?" the phrase got stuck in his head as he walked over to her. "Is that a new saying that's going around, I've never heard of it before, man I need to get out more." he thought to himself. When he made it over to her he reached up and grabbed the flour for her, as he brought it down his eye looked at hers, that's when he got all nervous, he held the flour out in front of her and looked down to hide the nervous facial expression he was giving off.
As he waited for her to take the flour, in a soft voice he said "..Here you go" as the words left his mouth he followed it with "Now the rattlers tail doesn't have to be tuggin?" he said in a confused tone as if he was wondering if he should say it or not.

Arlie hadn’t meant to startle the boy, but that’s how it went. At least he didn’t act legitimately scared, just caught off-guard. She couldn’t blame him, she had been rather sudden, not to mention the blonde wasn’t exactly quiet by any stretch of the word. When he pointed to himself, Arlie smiled a bit more and nodded. Of course him, there wasn’t anybody else in the aisle.
Thankfully he did help her. Arlie was fretful that she’d been a bit rude. Maybe she had but he was just sweet. Either way, she was glad for it. Her next plan would’ve been trying to climb the shelves with skates, but that ended about as well as one would think when the scenario played through her head. Much worse than jumping would’ve been by far. The blonde had the afterthought that maybe she should arrange co-shopping trip with Nate to avoid such instances. Arlie made a mental note to give him a ring once she was back at the dorm.
Or maybe he was just shy and that was what had startled him. As he turned his head down after making eye contact, Arlie made sure to give him a sunny smile even if he may or may not have caught it. “Thanks a bunch, sugar,” she said a little more gently, taking the flour from him and putting it in her basket. It was filling up a bit faster than she would’ve thought. It wasn’t like she couldn’t carry it, she could with ease, but the blonde was more worried if everything would fit. She assumed yes, but she could always be proven wrong.
At his next words, Arlie blinked. What about-oh. He was probably thrown off by what she’d said earlier, not that she was surprised. Most people gave her kind of weird looks or just tried to roll with it even if they had no clue what she was referencing. Giggling not unkindly, Arlie shook her head just enough to make the blonde curls restrained by ribbon sway behind her head. “Don’t strain yerself, darlin’, I’m from Texas,” she stated plainly, “sorry if I kinda threw yah off there with my slang.”

Zane stands there as he ponders if he should have even said that. After a few seconds he realized the phrase that left his mouth he knew he sounded stupid, well at least stupid coming from him. He in no way understood what that whole phrase was about. Stuff like this is the reason why Zane tended to avoid simple conversation with random people, he didn't want to embrace himself by the things he says.
As he stood there waiting for a reply from her, he hoped that she wouldn't take any offense from her comment. He wasn't sure if she would take it as a sign of disrespect, so he quickly tried to think on his feet at something new he can say to switch the focus on something else, thinking about this anymore would have definitely make him all nervous and his face would begin to light up red from his embarrassment. His mouth began to open as he was getting ready to spit out some random words, which he didn't care what it was because anything would be good at this point. Before he could say anything the young girl began to giggle.
She began to shake her head, as she did the first thing to pop in Zane's mind was "oh no she going to be mad now". He stood there waiting for her to explode at him, but to his surprise it was the opposite. She was saying sorry for what she said because she was from Texas!!! Zane felt a slight relief that she wasn't mad, especially over something that's probably said a lot over from where she lived.
Zane shook his said and replied in a soft voice looking almost straight down at the floor, "no no no I should be saying sorry, I was the one who said it, just me being awkward". He gave off a small smile and a chuckle to go with it. Very hesitant for a moment, he proceeded to put his hand out for a handshake and introduced himself, "My name is Zane" he looked back up straight at her face and said nervously "whats yours?"

The boy looked absolutely mortified that he’d even said such a thing. Arlie couldn’t really comprehend it, after all it wasn’t as if he’d insulted her or anything. She was from a different part of the country than him, or at least she assumed so since he hadn’t understood. Maybe she would tone down the southern speech for a bit so he wouldn’t look quite so uncomfortable. Arlie honestly felt bad for the poor thing, he looked so nervous.
Even after she told him it was really alright, he still insisted it was his fault. Arlie sighed and put her hands on her hips, pouting just enough to get her point a cross and leaning forward. “Now you listen tah me, sugar!” In an instant her expression softened, gentleness appearing in the form of a smile. “It’s okay, really. Don’t be so quick to put the blame on yerself fer somethin’ so small, y’hear? If yah sweat the small stuff, yer gonna hold yerself back with all that worryin’.” Realizing that she was kind of crowding him with how she was leaning, Arlie straight again and adjusted her grip on her basket. Best not invade his personal space too much lest she make him even more nervous. He hadn’t looked up from that floor once.
The handshake was an improvement at least. Donning a smile like sunshine, the usual sparkle kicked back into her grey eyes. Arlie took his hand with grip that was likely firmer than expected from a little blonde thing, but not crushing. “Name’s Arlie! Nice to meetcha, Zane!” she said with clear enthusiasm in her voice. It was always exciting to meet new people, and he was even looking at her now! Somehow she felt proud of him for doing so even if they’d just met. Granted, he did still appear nervous, but hey, progress was progress.
Actually, now that she thought about it…
Arlie released Zane’s hand out a moment, but kept her eyes on him, looking pensive for a moment. He looked familiar, but she couldn’t quite place it, like she’d seen him from a distance somewhere but never close up like this before.
Wait a minute…
Arlie tilted her head and took up an inquisitive expression. “Say, you wouldn’t happen to go to Shibusen, would yah? You look kinda familiar now that I git a good look atcha.” It was entirely possible she could be wrong and be remembering him from somewhere else. But perhaps she’d seen him on campus or across the room during class and simply failed to notice him from a lack of immediate interaction.

Before Zane could put out his hand and introduce himself to her she began to speak. She was telling him not to worry about it and to not sweat the small stuff, but as she spoke he wasn't paying to much detail in the words leaving her lips. While he was still looking down he was getting the feeling that she could be real close to him, he was afraid to look up in fear that she really was up close to him while she was speaking,. That would be something he wouldn't be able to handle to well, he knew he would get all nervous and his face would turn a bright red. Girls, still something he can't quite stop getting nervous over.
When the girl was done speaking she began to leaning towards him, as she did he felt he presence move away. Being a bit nervous and worried if she might have still be up close to him, he kept his eyes on the floor and put out his hand for an introduction. After he introduced himself he felt felt a soft yet firm hand grasp onto his, he slowly looked up at her as she introduced herself.as Arlie. "Arlie, that's a nice name" he thought to himself, since he couldn't seem to form the words to say it out loud for her to hear he said "it's nice to meet you". Her voice was enthusiastic, this added a bit more of a calming feel that made Zane feel a little less nervous. He then remembered he was shaking her hand!!! Luckily before his face could turn red they let go of the handshake, which made him feel a lot more relieved!
Before he could say something, she began giving him a look, nothing quite out of the ordinary, more of a staring type look. Not quite sure as to why she gave him this look he remained silent, she then titled her head and asked if he was a student at Shibusen because he seemed familiar to her. He paused for a moment, he then realized she was familiar, they shared 2 classes together and he would see her around school all the time. Still being a bit nervous but not as much as before, he didn't want to seem like he was stalking her since he saw her all the time, so he replied with such a simple answer.
"Yes, I go there" he then followed it with "do you go there too?"
Immediately after saying that he gave off a small awkward little laugh and began to scratch his head. "Do you go there too? of course she does!!!!! how could i say that, oh man I'm making such a fool of myself, why didn't I just say I see you around there and such!" he thought to himself. "Alright, I need to play it cool, I don't want to freak her out with my awkwardness, most importantly I cant show it!" he also though to himself, but clearly he already failed at that the moment he met her.
He quickly stopped scratching his head, took a deep break to calm himself. After about a moment he gave off a calm relaxed facial expression and showed a small smile as he awaited her response.

Arlie felt relieved he didn’t seem to be put off by her looking him over, but then it wasn’t like she was exaggerated in doing so. Zane also didn’t look nearly as nervous as he had before. She almost felt a little sorry for him. Shy and nervous were two things Arlie had never been, but to her credit she wasn’t oblivious as to how to interact with someone who was. Just act as she always did with people seemed nice: be nice in return. Simple as that and hoping that something didn’t shift that set off her temper, but Arlie highly doubted Zane would do so.
Just how obvious the answer to the question tacked onto Zane’s answer was flew right over Arlie’s head. The thought that she had of course asked because she attended Shibusen too didn’t enter her mind, she was too distracted by the thrill of meeting another student. Hopping once as much as was safe on roller skates, Arlie punched her free hand in the air. “Yes! I knew I’d seen yah!” Her attention quickly shifted back to Zane, though, grey eyes seeming to sparkle. Her excitement over meeting fellow students knew no bounds. Oh, but she had an answer to give too, didn’t she?
Arlie nodded in a way that made the blonde curls tied behind her head bounce, a smile painted across her features. “I sure do!” She set her shopping basket down for the moment and flexed her right arm, clapping her left hand over her bicep in a Rosie the Riveter pose. “I’m a Weapon o’ the One star class! A Demon Scythe, to be precise,” she said proudly with a fiery look in her eyes. Sure she was the odd one out of a long line of gun Weapons, but a scythe was a whole different level of badass in her opinion, or at least it was now. Nathaniel had played a big role in helping her see that, and so had Zia.
But her mind kept on rolling and rolled right back to Zane. She put her hands on her hips and was leaning forward again, starting to shift back into looking inquisitive although one could almost see the excitement that had her so hyped up. “What about yerself? I’ve seen you ‘round, so you’ve gotta be One star too, right?” She could be wrong, but Arlie didn’t think so. There were few mixed classes at Shibusen, and those were all usually the few normal subjects taught at the school. Granted she could’ve also just seen him in passing walking around but who knows.

As he waited for her response a cheery glow began to surround Arlie, the excited girl threw her hand in the air almost as if she was trying to punch something above her. She blurted out that she had seen him around. "So she had noticed me around school" he thought quietly to himself. Her attention quickly shifted toward him, and to Zane it seemed that her eyes had a soft twinkle too them. As she looked at him, he began to get a little nervous, "She seems excited to be looking at me" he thought to himself as he tried to not show the nervousness her look was giving him.
As the tension rose, well at least the tension on Zane's side rose, the silence of the stare between the two was quickly broken by a big beautiful smile Arlie gave off. It had seemed she began to say something, it turns out that she was a weapon as well, a demon scythe at that, she gave off a intense look as she said it, it was apparent that she is proud to be a scythe, confidence, a quality that Zane admires in a person. He began to smile, but only just a little bit. Next thing you know she began to lean forward again, and that relaxed smile on his face began to slowly shift into a nervous smile. With his mind occupied about a girl being close he noticed her mouth beginning to move.
He desperately tried to snap out of it to catch what she was saying, his eyes focused in on her lips and slowly he started to hear what she was saying. "What about me?" he silently repeated to himself. He was a bit hesitant to answer her question, she was a demon scythe, that in it self is pretty intimidating so he stood silent for a moment.
"What about me? Well I'm a one star weapon myself, I think we have a few classes together" he gave off a small little chuckle.
Once he finished his chuckle he looked at her, not really sure what to say his head slowly shifted downwards, not completely down just enough where his eyes can see the floor he stared stare at her roller skates, and not thinking he blurted out
"It must be hard riding those all over the city"
He quickly shut his mouth. "Why did I say that?" he curiously kept asking himself. He looked back up at her and gave off a smile accompanied by a small chuckle.

He was smiling! That was an improvement! Zane still looked nervous, but Arlie was still glad to see him smiling. Even so, he looked a little out of focus. Maybe it was how close she was. Again. She really needed to get a handle on how much distance she kept between her and other people. Most people in Texas didn’t mind it that much, or at least not where she was from. But this was Death City and there were people from all over the dang world. Arlie was tactile and in your face by nature, but it would be a good idea to maybe put a leash on it.
The silence worried her. Uh-oh. Had she been a little too forward? Nah, he’s probably just thinkin’. Or so Arlie hoped. Then again, she couldn’t see how Weapon talk could be a conversation killer. Unless someone was something embarrassing like…maybe a Demon Frying Pan or something. That still sounded like it would do some damage, but also rather silly at the same time. But Arlie also was only thinking of her own class again. Zane could be a Meister for all she knew which would be pretty cool. She didn’t really know a lot of Meisters.
Actually the only Meisters Arlie knew were Kaylin and her own partner, Nathaniel, but that just made that thought true.
But Arlie would not be meeting another Meister this time around, not that she was disappointed in the slightest to hear Zane was a Weapon as well, and in the same class as she was! Quite literally, too. Now that he mentioned it, she did remember him from classes. Arlie knocked herself on the side of her head with the palm of one hand. “Aw shoot, no wonder I recognized yah!” She laughed lightly, smiling slightly apologetically. “You’d think the red hair woulda tipped me off, but I know yah now so there we go!” Now Arlie had someone else to chat with before class started. Always a plus in her book.
And the subject change threw her a bit. Arlie blinked up at Zane, looking lost for a few seconds before dropping her own gaze down to her skates. Completely unrelated, but the question was fair enough. Not everyone knew how to skate like she did, this Arlie knew. She’ done roller derby for years after all, she was definitely a cut above the rest! Arlie shook her head and giggled, lifting her head to put her focus back on Zane. “Not hardly,” she said in an amused but not unkind tone of voice, “I’ve been skatin’ since I could walk practically. ‘Sides, what kinda derby girl would I be if I couldn’t skate ‘round a city?”

So she did remember him after all, there weren't many people in the same class as them with the red hair, so it came as a relief to Zane, otherwise he would have felt a little more embarrassed and awkward then he already felt if she didn't recall seeing him. Zane needed to broaden his horizon when it came to other students in his class, besides Kaylin, he didn't really know anyone in the same class. Sure other students would say hello or ask him a question about the work, but he hasn't really socialized with them as much as he has with this girl. This was a big step up for him, he didn't want to mess it up!
Of course in a panic he asked the random question about her skates, it was so out of the blue, definitely something that would seem a little strange to certain people, hopefully she wasn't that type of person that would be scared off by his shy awkwardness. So trying to play it off he gave a chuckle and smile.
To a much relieved moment she answered his question, he was worried for a second after she kinda gave off a lost looked, but luckily she rolled with it.
"A derby girl?"
It wasn't completely lost on Zane what she meant by it. She must have been referring to roller derby, this was something he knew about, and by knew he understood what they did but never has he actually watched or try to understand the point of it. but this became something of a perfect situation for him! He would learn something new while in the process of being more social! He just has to get it together and keep calm.
While making eye contact with Arlie, in a soft voice he asked "So I take it you partake in roller derby? Is that something you do often?"
After the questions left his mouth he looked around, he forgot that they were still in the store. Wasn't really an ideal place for them to keep a conversation going, especially when people keep walking by as they go through the isle, he felt a little bad that he could have been blocking someone from their shopping. He wanted to suggest that they take the conversation somewhere else or at least out of the way of the other shoppers, but how would he have asked? More importantly would she be alright with wanting to keep a conversation going with Zane somewhere else?
With an almost panic like face, "Meeting new people and especially girls, is very stressful" He thought to himself [/font]
