Alright my dearies, gather ‘round. Rylux and I have been seeing a lot of patterns in a lot of profiles in terms of mistakes and things we’ve seen a thousand times by now, so we finally went and did it. This is a crash course to profile making from length to how to be sure your character is the appropriate weight to what not to do because frankly we’ve seen it too many times before.
Let’s get started!
First and foremost, be sure to read the General Rules and Character Rules!
Next, we recommend that for your first character, you start with a One star student. By and large, they’re easier to find partners for, and you’ll have more to do in the way of threads by doing so. It’s a good place to start and get acclimated to the site. We aren’t going to make you, of course, but we do recommend it. You can always make another character later.
Before we get to the actual profile bit, let me say do not base your character off of any major character in Soul Eater. We haven’t seen it a lot, but we’ve seen it enough. Black Star is stronger than you will ever be; Kidd is now Shinigami-sama. Don’t do it, friends.
Let’s start from the top and work out way down.
Names are important and can be difficult, believe me I know. What we want to stress, though, is that you choose an actual name for your character and not one you made up off the top of your head. The other thing about names is that they need to match where your character is from. We’ve seen a lot of people give Japanese names to people that are not from Japan or in any way Japanese and give no reason as to why. It’s a trend we’re tired of seeing, so please do think about where your character is coming from when naming them.
Age - Students must be between thirteen and eighteen to attend Shibusen. Teachers must be at least twenty six and up and having graduated Shibusen. Witches will look like mere children for a long ass time and their age for now should not exceed that of the oldest Witch on the site which is currently Zuri Kidawa who is four hundred and ten years old and only appears to be in her early twenties. Kishin Eggs are pretty much open season, just be sure to watch their backstories with their histories if you plan on making a younger one.
Partners. Even if you have talked over with someone you plan on partnering with and know for certain you will be partnering, don’t put it in your profile. This comes with the problem in the past we’ve had of people doing this but having the other character not be done yet. Some people on the unpartnered list may be in the process of partnering in a thread you have yet to notice. Some teams may have recently broken up. Check the Unpartnered Students list frequently, as it does change. As an extra note as we have seen people try this, you may not play a Weapon and Meister team all by yourself. No making two characters of your own and trying to partner them. You’ve got to partner with someone other than yourself, just like in Soul Eater. Running with that, if you are planning to partner with someone, know that you must legitimately partner up through RP in a thread. No starting right out of the gates as partners, unless they were transfers. But in that case you would both need to join and get their profiles up at the same time.
Rank is another.
For new student characters, you have the option of either One star or NOT. We get a lot of question as to what a student in the NOT class would consist of. A student in the NOT class would have a reason to be there, be it a lack of combat training or not having proper control of their abilities, such as transformations for Weapons or Soul Purge for Meisters. Something is giving them difficulty that is keeping them from being ready for One Star status. Maybe your Meister has issues building up a Soul Purge or activating their Soul Perception. Maybe your Weapon can transform fully but there’s something wrong, like a bladed Weapon being dull rather than sharp. This could also be a physical or mental disability keeping them back, like if they happened to be deaf or suffering from a mental illness. These are things that would land them in the NOT class, at least as a starting point.
One stars, by comparison, can control at least one of their abilities available for new character, those being Soul Purge and Soul Perception respectively. They have more skill in combat, at the very least in a training sense of the word, and are more able to get out there and start fighting on a team. Weapons can control their partial forms and are able to fully transform with ease.
Witches and Kishin Eggs also discern rank based on power. One star is usually the way to go with a newbie, and beginning with a Two star will mean we’ll be looking at their profile very closely. A younger Witch more in the lower power range or a middle aged Witch with a middling power range is a One star. A Witch could also still be middle aged, however, and be a touch more powerful than her other sisters, warranting a Two star. Same goes for Kishin Eggs, the younger ones that are less powerful or those who haven’t been Kishin Eggs long should be One stars. Those who are more powerful regardless would be Two stars. Once again, it is recommended you start out with a One star since otherwise we’ll be look at you very closely.
For Enchanters, they follow the same rank rules as students.
Height and weights are something we actually see a lot that needs fixing. It’s quite often that people make their character very underweight or overweight for their height in ways that could potentially be crippling. If it’s intended that’s fine, but please do check the height/weight chart we use here on the site.
The appearance section of a profile we find usually is a touch short. It needs to be at least 200 words, and we can and do check. We need to know what your character looks like. This means hair color, eye color, skin color, any potential scars or markings they may have. However, this also means we want to know what they wear, how they usually dress, any special trinkets they have on them for any reason at all. Please be aware of a few things though. For instance, if your character has a tattoo, make sure it’s actually legal for them to get a tattoo where they’re from. Also know that if you give your character a scar, we’ll be looking for where they got it in their history. Recently we’ve also seen a few things that have no place in the Soul Eater universe and by that I mean: eyes that change color, hair that changes color with their emotions, hair that glows, etc. None of these things will be acceptable because they have no place and make no sense in the Soul Eater universe.
One little thing about appearance is don't make an albino character. There's two already, that's enough given that it isn't exactly common.
Next let’s talk fighting styles.
Even the weakest and most unfit character will have some way of dealing with foes in battle, which is why we always want a good description here. Describe any tactics your character uses, whether it’s feints or head on attacks, if they prefer kicks to punches, or if they just plain run away and try and find a place to hide until everything blows over. If they’ve been trained in a particular form of fighting then please, for the love of French toast, say what that is. We’ve seen people put that their character has been trained for years or since childhood to kick ass only for them to not list what they’re talking about. Karate? Aikido? Turkish Oil Wrestling? We just don’t know, which is why we ask you to please list that so we know what you’re talking about. In addition, if your character is trained in a specific style, please also take the time to research it. There are several schools of Karate; there is more than one style of Kung Fu. Being specific can only help you in the long run, especially when you’ll know just how to write your character’s actions when they get into a fight.
Something else we’ve seen a trend of is swordsmen. While that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it is getting old. Not every Weapon at Shibusen is a sword, not all of the “best” Weapons at Shibusen will be swords. As far as Meisters go with this, they can be trained to hell and back with swords and still end up with something completely different. The best example on the site off the top of my head would be Levi Kastein and Irene Dixon. Levi is trained to be a knight and in wielding swords. His partner Irene happens to be a Demon Corseque. Not what he was trained in, but damn do they wreck. Training doesn’t mean a damn thing unless you can find a sword Weapon with a compatible wavelength that will mesh well with your character’s wavelength.
Personality is a big one, so it’s getting its own little section, get ready.
Personality comes next and once again, we see repeatedly that people tend to short-change us here, or at least they try to. Your personality needs to be at least three paragraphs, or 300 words. We list that right in the template, but a great deal of people we’ve seen apparently don’t notice that. We need to know how your character acts, plain and simple. A few things that apparently need to be addressed, though, are personality traits that definitely would not be acceptable at Shibusen.
If you’re thinking of having a student character that displays any of the stereotypical tendencies that generally indicate sadism or a thirst for blood, you really may want to reconsider. Why? Because those are things indicative of madness, something that would definitely not only be watched but not approved of in any way at the school. It’s fine if it’s in a sense of killing Kishin Eggs and dispersing evil and all that, but there has to be a limit somewhere. If your character likes cutting the ears off of baby rabbits or trying to steal blood from other students, we’re going to outright tell you that won’t fly. Those are madness indicators; they’d either be thrown out on their asses or under a lot of surveillance. Worst case, they could even be killed if they were considered enough of a threat.
Another thing we tend to see in personality is, frankly, things that don’t belong there. How your character stands belongs in with their appearance. How they fight belongs in their fighting style. We’ve also seen a pattern recently, that pattern being the stoic loner that’s shut off after experiencing a great tragedy. Stop. We’ve had way too many Sasuke Uchiha reruns on this site recently and we’re really sick of it. There is an endless supply of character traits you can throw into personality. A clumsy know-it-all who has an irrational fear of caterpillars, a bubbly but determined trainee set on doing their family proud, a serious character that’s a bit socially awkward and loves to just relax after a long day. There are lists upon lists upon lists devoted to character traits online; it isn’t hard to look some up. In addition to that, you can always message Rylux of myself for help if you’re struggling. We can and are perfectly willing to help, but we can’t do that unless you ask.
Finally, we see a lot of contradictions in personality too. We don’t mean an introvert who has a lot of friends or a boisterous person who prefers being alone or things like that which are amiable and differ from person to person. We’re talking big, glaring contradictions.
For Kishin Eggs, you don’t have to be completely maddened, though they are a ton more fun that way, let me tell you. You can have a Kishin Egg that is perfectly capable of hiding in amongst normal humans, or you could have one that is monstrous and works it. You could have a devious Kishin Egg, big on the planning aspect of hunting for souls. Or, you’re Kishin Egg could be complete crap at hunting and be constantly on the move and running from Shibusen. It’s up to you. Maybe they’re the psychotic serial killer hiding in an old war bunker, or maybe they’re the runaway that has nowhere else to go. Maybe they’re older and looking a bit less human these days and have to be more conscious of their hiding places. Maybe they’re surprisingly nice unless they’re hunting you. Also remember that madness comes with themes, and you can read up on those here to help get you started, since madness is always part of Kishin Eggs. Also keep in mind that in order to be a Kishin Egg, they will have consumed a human soul at some point.
Witches have what we call a chaotic nature. They just do not do the normal thing, they’ve got to attack things and kill people and cause all sorts of trouble. This is usually displayed somehow in their personality, granted they all have their own personal flair to it. Witches do have other personality traits other than just that, though. They can be lazy, studious, even bubbly in their own little sick and twisted ways. Some can even be damn good in hiding their nature as well, and Medusa is a prime example of that given she hid out as the school nurse. Exceptions to this would be Good Witches, Witches who possess a power theme that negates their chaotic nature. A Witch with healing power, for example, would lack a chaotic nature.
Next we have abilities.
Let’s start with Weapons:
To start, I should mention we don’t do repeats of forms here. The only exception is if you see that a Weapon form you like is taken and contact the person playing that character via PM and ask if it’s alright if you also make a character with that Weapon form. If they say yes, be sure to switch up the form at least a little so they aren’t identical. If they say no, please respect their decision and see if you can’t find something else. You can see which forms have been taken as well as suggestions for potential Weapon formshere.
The same goes for Witches with power themes and familiars. Their list is here. The Kishin Eggs also have their own list here.
Let’s get started!

For starting Weapons, you’ll have your Weapon form and then their partial form. While this isn’t a trend, we have seen it enough for it to be troublesome so please do not simply put a picture of their Weapon form. A picture tells us what it looks like, but we want a solid description to go along with it, not to mention some Weapons are a bitch to find pictures of if you’re going old school. Really old school, like, ancient old school. If they’re a pole-arm, how long is the shaft? Where’s the pointy end? Is it metal, wood, plastic, straw, what? If it’s a sword, again, how long is the blade? How long is the hilt, is there anything fancy to it? Depending on the type of sword, is there hand guard or not? If so, what does it look like and how much of the Meister’s hand will it cover while wielded? And as always, if you have a Weapon that’s technically two Weapons, they need to be connected by a chain of some sort. There is also a list of banned Weapons that you can find here.
As for partial forms, we also need a description. Unless you can describe it really well, a starting character will need to lose a limb in place of their partial. It can replace a leg, an arm, part of a leg or arm, their hand, their foot, something. If they’re in the NOT class, maybe they’re not so good at this yet. Maybe they’re partial form is somewhere less than ideal, like their non-dominant hand or arm for a lack of coordination or a foot or lower leg when they’re not trained to fight with kicks. Maybe it isn’t even the pointy end that’s their partial if you really want them to be bitter about their progress. A One star should have better control though, so be aware.
Onto Meisters.
Meisters get to start with one of two abilities, Soul Purge or Soul Perception.
Soul Purge is fairly simple. It’s essentially resonating with yourself. The Meister gathers their wavelength and then releases it in an attack, usually a punch or kick since we’re talking basics here. This usually has the equivalent effect of shocking someone. If your character also happens to pack a physical punch, they can also probably knock them off their feet. There are exceptions to how powerful Soul Purge can be, examples of that would be Misaki Saito or Levi Kastein just thinking off the top of my head, but we’ll get to that later when I talk about special souls and wavelengths.
Soul Perception is something we have an issue with quite a bit funnily enough, and it’s always with distance. The furthest a student Meister can currently see on the site is thirty feet. Your character, if they are a Meister starting out with Soul Perception, should not exceed that distance. In addition, their Soul Perception needs to fit into the confines of the Soul Eater universe, i.e. it needs to adhere to how soul actually look and are depicted. Generic human souls are generally blue unless otherwise stated, Kishin Egg souls are bright red with madness, and Witch souls are purple. Meisters and Weapons have more unique appearances based on character traits and their colors vary between wavelengths. Levi Kastein’s soul is platinum, Bang Bang’s soul looks like a bomb, Jin-Eun’s soul is lavender, the list goes on. There are exceptions to this in some cases though, such as Conor Sullivan who is legally blind.
Next up are the Kishin Eggs.
You have a few things to think on with Kishin Eggs. For one, you’ve got whatever theme you’ve decided to base them on. You’ll also have whatever madness applies to them to work off of and base powers on. If your Kishin Egg was once a Weapon or a Meister, it’s entirely possible they retain some of the power from that. Draven still has his Soul Perception left over from when he was a Meister; Anastasia Volkov still actively uses her partial form when killing her victims. There’s also the point of bringing up that Kishin Eggs are also capable of having other powers, but do include a reason for it. If they have plant powers, maybe they were a gardener. If they have some firepower to them, maybe they were always a bit of a pyro. In addition, when you are starting a Kishin Egg, keep your abilities limited to five.
Onto the Witches.
Witches have two things for you to think about, familiars and themes. Their familiars can be a lot of things, from a donkey to a shark to a jellyfish to a snake. So long as it currently walks the earth and isn’t already taken, go for it, but you can only choose one. The same goes for their theme, which is what their spells will be based in. Their theme is also a bit of a wide category. Their magic can revolve around plants, it can be control of wind, control over water, or maybe explosions are more their style. So long as another Witch on the site doesn’t already have said theme for their spells, it’s yours, but keep in mind you can only choose one. We like to stress that because we’ve seen a lot of people try and combine two, mainly poison and plants. It’s understandable, but it’s a no. Moving right along, Witches also have chants that go along with casting their spells. They usually involves their animal somehow. Kali Bengali’s chant includes the word tiger, Zuri Kidawa’s chant includes hyena, Aries Sivo’s chant includes baa-baa like her sheep familiar. The effects of their spells are up to you and what you come up with as their theme but like with Kishin Eggs, keep their starting number of spells at five. You can always buy more via upgrades later.
Last but not least, let’s get to the Enchanters.
Enchanters are those gifted with natural magic talent, but far less than Witches. The majority of them come from the Loew village in the Czech republic where 80% of the population there happens to be Enchanters, though it’s not exclusive. They have large brown gloves they use to control their magic, kneading it into the earth to make their golems. With the fall of Arachnophobia, some are now allowed to join Shibusen and take on a partner. They can be Weapons or Meister; it’s entirely up to you. They will still have the abilities we talked about before in that case, and of course, they’ll have that lovely ability of making golems. It’s also possible that, if your Enchanted is a Weapon, they can make their own golem and have it serve as their Meister, but this all comes with its own lovely set of pros and cons. There is a limit of one Enchanter character per person, and starting out they should only be able to make a single golem.
Okay, let’s get to the rest of the abilities which you can look at over here. We have four special souls to choose from here HOWEVER be aware that first characters aren’t allowed to have one. You’ve gotta wait until you’re settled enough to decide and make a second to get one. Read up on them, see what you think, and stick to the guidelines because we wrote those little paragraphs for a reason. You can also think up one of your own if you wish, but be aware that we’ll need to approve it first. Also note that special souls are rare, not everyone is walking around with these things. Off the top of my head I think there are four or five characters only on this site with souls and wavelengths outside the norm. Things to keep in mind.
After abilities come the strengths and weaknesses which we see a lot of people have trouble with, to the point where if you come in on your first try before review and have them balanced we’re impressed. Strengths and weaknesses are something that will apply to your character in every battle they face whether it’s a sparring match between students or a lizard Kishin Egg with thousands of teeth and eight eyes. These would be things like physical strength, their ability to dodge, if they have a handicap of any sort, poor eyesight, things like that. Things that don’t count are anything that are general personality types and phobias. A fear of spiders or closed spaces won’t come up in every battle. Their unwillingness to work with others will suck in trying to find a partner but also may not come into play every battle. Their quick wit and knack for scathing remarks isn’t going to do jack against a Kishin Egg. For more, there is also a strengths and weaknesses thread that differentiates those between what we call mere advantages and disadvantages. You can take a gander at that right over here.
If you are thinking of making a blind character, don't. We already have two blind students, that's the limit.
Hobbies, likes, and dislikes are specific to your character; we can’t and won’t tell you how to do those unless they’re things like cutting the ears off baby gazelle or grinding an axe in their basement at three am. Because that sounds an awful lot like madness.
Aspirations, again, is specific to your characters, go nuts kid. Reach for the stars.
History.
Boy oh boy, is this gonna be a doozy. There are a lot of patterns we’ve seen that we never want to see again in histories. However, moderation is fine, but we’ve been seeing a few constantly lately so we’re going to beg you to avoid them if possible here and those are as follows:
- A dead family member at the hands of another family member turned Kishin Egg.
- A dead family member at the hands of a Witch.
- A dead family member dead at the hands of a Kishin Egg or a Witch.
- An entire family being wiped out by a Kishin Egg or a Witch.
- A Shibusen team saving your character from something at the last possible moment.
- Interaction of any canon character, dear gods I cannot stress enough how much you shouldn’t do this.
- For you Witches out there, equating their power or an ancestor’s power to that of the Witch Mabaa. Do not do it.
- Orphans. Specifically orphans via dead parents who died in a grisly way and now lead a troubled life. There are other ways to do orphans, please try.
- Dead family members or killed family members in general.
- Witches interacting with Shibusen.
- Writing in first person.
- DWMA. We follow the manga here, which means it is Shibusen. Not DWMA. Don’t do it, friends. Don’t do it.
We’ve seen these things in increasing regularity so we’re calling it. If you can avoid these things, don’t do it. We’ve seen too many reruns of Sasuke Uchiha lately. There is more than one way to write an orphan, there is more than one way for parents to die. Think hard about this, do their parents really have to die? There are several ways for characters to get to Shibusen that don’t involve being rescued. There are other ways to make your character interesting that do not involve death and bloodshed. Again, done well these things are fine. The problem is that we’re seeing them again and again, and seeing them done poorly. Now that this is out of the way, let’s move along to the basics.
Location, location. Where is your character from? Give us a city or at least a general area around a city, a countryside of something, anything.
If your character is a Weapon, there must be Weapon blood somewhere in their family, preferably within three generations. Meisters can occasionally just pop up, but Weapons all have the same base origin. It can be a parent, a grandparent, but it must be mentioned.
Meister or Weapon, you must mention when their abilities surfaced. One does not simply march into Shibusen and start attending. You must be a known Meister or Weapon to attend. Powers usually manifest around when they hit puberty, sometimes a few years earlier. Late bloomers are also not unheard of; just state that if that’s what you’re going for though. Maybe your Meister accidentally Soul Purged a kid in the school yard or asked their parents what all those glowing orbs were when they start being able to use their Soul Perception. If they’re a Weapon, maybe they get super jazzed up in a fight and accidentally activate their partial for the first time, or maybe their parents go to wake them up for school and discover a Weapon in the place of their child in bed asleep. Stories vary, but we gotta know how they found out about their powers.
What was their family life like? Do they have any siblings? If they were trained in anything since childhood or since any age in particular we’ll be looking for that here. Same if they have a scar from something, we’ll be looking for it in their history. When did they decide to go to Shibusen and how did they get there? These are things we’ll be looking for. You can embellish of course, but don’t overdo it because too much irrelevant information can sometimes be a touch overwhelming.
Something we see a lot also happens to be characters who have drawn the short straw somehow in the way of being in an area of the world where Weapons are not approved of. This is fine but only if it makes sense. The site recognizes a place that is for sure not okay with Weapons is Belarus. From the manga, we know there’s some vague anti sentiment in Japan because their prime minister is required to be a Shibusen graduate and a Weapon, and that the Vatican also has a bit of anti-Weapon sentiment that is underground, and there is also some in the Middle East in Baghdad in the form of actual factions. Everywhere else is generally okay for Weapons considering, y’know, they help keep really terrible things from attacking and killing people and eating their souls. Kinda hard to argue with that. If you’re going for your Weapon character to have this in their background, please keep location in mind and remember that anti-Weapon sentiment in America is rare and residing likely only in the South, and not even to a horrible extent considering Shibusen is in Nevada. Please keep this in mind.
If you are making a Kishin Egg, you’re going to want to include when they first consumed their human soul and how they went mad. Are they coming from a bad situation? Did their thirst to become stronger drive them to commit taboo? Did they just want to see what would happen? Maybe they even knew what they were doing and just wanted to see what fun it could bring. There’s an endless list of ways for people to veer off towards madness and down a human soul.
If you’re making a Witch, my hat goes off to you as I have definitely been there. Witch histories are generally longer because they live so damn long. If you’re Witch is younger this may not be the case, but generally it is. We need to know the basics still, where they’re from, what was their family like, etc. However, we also need to know when they started to come into their nature. Witches are not born knowing what they are save in the case of Witches like Zuri or Kali. Their mothers were also Witches, so they knew damn well. Witches are a trip because they age exceedingly slow. They can be seventy and still look like they’re ten. Sooner or later, though, they’ll come into their powers and start honing them. Maybe they start causing trouble beforehand, or maybe they were always little hell-raisers. Maybe they happen into their magic on accident, or maybe they always knew and practiced alone in secret before they were able to strike out on their own. It’s up in the air and up to you.
Enchanters will be similar to students, but likely from that little village in Loew. If they aren’t, I would at least mention that their parents or someone within two generations of them so there is an obvious line of inheritance in their Enchanter powers. Like with everything else, you’ll also need to explain when those powers started being something they could use as well, along with all the other things that apply to students.
Your alias should be whatever you go by or plan on going by in the cbox.
Some people use a face claim, or rather a character from an anime that resembles theirs on the site as an icon and profile picture. If you have one, list their name and the anime they are from as well as your character’s name. That makes it easy for us to copy and paste into the face claim list so nobody else swipes it!
RP samples we can’t really call much on. We’re looking for an accurate depiction of you writing for your character as you’ve described them. One thing we want to stress is that we write in third person on this site so please to not write in first person. It’s also pretty much site standard to add a text color for when your character is speaking as it makes it much easier to tell when they are speaking as opposed to, say, an NPC or another character they happen to be threading with. Their RP sample should also be at least 250 words as that is the bare minimum word requirement for the site.
I think that covers it! Now go forth into character creation!
