It was a little town, a quiet village. Ville-sur-Jarnioux wasn’t exactly postcard material, but it was a lovely little place. With its green fields among rolling hills and quaint houses made of pale gold stone, it was the very picture of what the French countryside was expected to look like. With the sun beating down upon the scene, it looked like quite a happy place to inhabit. If only that were true. Giselle was at her wits end. It was bad enough to have her husband missing, but it was even worse with the kinds of rumors that were beginning to circulate. The rumors about how he had become so angry that the slightest little mishap would send him flying into a rage, about how he’d grown paranoid and barely trusted his own wife, let alone anyone else. People they’d known since childhood growing up in the little town were turning their backs to Giselle in her desperate search, even her own brother. She’d followed him about through the rows of grape vines, begging him to help until he too had turned on her, “Souhaitez-vous écouter vous-même? Savez-vous comment vous paraître ridicule? S'il a été prise par la Bête qu'il est parti, Giselle!”((Would you listen to yourself? Do you know how ridiculous you sound? If he was taken by the Beast, he’s gone, Giselle!)) She had glared at her brother with cold blue eyes, but her gaze had faltered. She wasn’t mad, she was worried. She just wanted her husband back, “S'il vous plaît Adrien! Je ne sais pas qui d'autre s'adresser, personne ne va m'aider! Ils croient que c'est Dorian qui a fait cela, ils croient qu'il est devenu fou! “ ((Please Adrien! I don’t know who else to turn to, no one will help me! They believe that it is Dorian who has done this, they believe he has gone mad!”)) Her brother didn’t look at her, continuing to check the vines for any sign of disease or parasites. Giselle huffed and stomped her foot against the ground, a small cloud of copper colored dust rising up around her ankles, “Adrien, tu pourrais au moins m'écouter!”((Adrien, you could at least listen to me!)) He turned on her then, getting right in her face and snarling at her, “J'ai été à votre écoute, pendant des semaines, en fait! Vous devez faire face à la vérité que Dorian est mort ou il est celui qui nous tourmente! Sauf si vous pouvez trouver une preuve pour prouver au reste de la ville mal ou vous aurez une foule en colère sur vos mains.”((I have been listening to you, for weeks in fact! You need to face the truth that Dorian is either dead or he is the one who torments us! Unless you can find some proof to prove the rest of the town wrong or you’ll have an angry mob on your hands.)) Giselle’s voice faltered as she hung her head, “J'essaie de le trouver, mais-“((I’m trying to find him, but-)) “Puis essayer plus fort. J'espère pour toi ces étudiants peut vous aider. Tu es trop jeune et trop belle pour être veuve.”((Then try harder. I hope for your sake those students can help you. You’re too young and too beautiful to be a widow.)) The blonde clenched her fists but wasn’t daring enough to raise them. Instead she turned on her heel and marched through the rows of grape vines blinking back tears and biting her lip to keep any sniveling at bay. Adrien meant well, but he didn’t have to be so damned stubborn! Everyone threw a tantrum every now and again, her husband was no different! Dorian couldn’t be the beast, he just couldn’t be! Giselle would prove him wrong, she would prove everyone wrong, she just didn’t know how yet. She reentered the town with the copper colored dust covering her shoes. She considered shaking them off when she reached the vineyard gate but decided it wasn’t worth it. They’d get coated again by the time she reached home anyways. Pulling the shawl she wore tightly around her shoulders, Giselle walked quickly and kept her head down. She didn’t need any berating from her brother’s neighbors today, and she knew if she made eye contact they’d feel compelled to turn away and whisper amongst themselves. They said terrible things, she knew this. They made up lies, claiming they’d seen Dorian tear the head off of a chicken with his bare hands, that they’d seen him running in the hills with wolves. Lies, all lies. She knew her Dorian, and he was no beast. Giselle hadn’t wanted to, but she’d come to hate her neighbors for the things they said. Giselle gradually slowed as she reached the little house where she and Dorian called home. Pausing just outside the door, she wondered perhaps if he had come home, if he was waiting inside for her. Everything seemed so surreal without him present. It didn’t feel like their house, it felt like a museum with everything that was theirs on display until Dorian returned, and Giselle herself was not exempt to that. Slowly, she forced her feet to move forward towards the door and sat on the front steps. The students would be arriving soon, she knew that. It was the only reason she wouldn’t let herself cry. Her heart still felt no less weighed down, though. Sighing, Giselle regarded the thin band of gold around her left ring finger, smiling sadly for just a moment before hanging her head and clasping bother hands to her chest. If the students didn’t find him and bring him home, she didn’t know what she’d do.

Picking a mission to take was more difficult than Levi would have liked. Nothing allowed at the one star level seemed like a fitting mission for him. Being denied a two star mission he settled on one that seemed like one that would offer at least a decent challenge. Apparently the kishin in this one had been likened to a bear or a wolf. Levi hoped for the former as it seemed like more of a challenge to fight. Regardless as long as the monster was fun to fight he wasn’t going to be terribly picky. What better way to start his ascent of Shibusen than by killing a beastly kishin egg?
Having to wait a day before everything was ready for the mission Levi began to prepare after separating from Irene. First order of business was contacting those in charge of missions for Shibusen and making sure everything was to his standards for the mission. Unlike the last time he attempted a mission this time he was going to have things work as he wanted. Finished he spent some time with a little last minute training with his equipment before falling asleep to wait for the next day.
The next morning he awoke and gathered what he would need for the mission. Not worried about much he threw on a pair of black boots and a common set of black jeans. If they were to get a little dirt or blood on them it wouldn’t be as horrible as if it got on his more important clothing. Of course he wore a leather jacket open with nothing underneath. Just in case he brought a case for his glasses in case things got out of hand and tied up the outfit with a black studded belt. As this was a bit of a trial mission he attached Zegen to his waist just in case things ended poorly. Finished he left and headed for the school.
According to his plan he reached the school and everything seemed to be going smoothly. The taxi he had requested was there to take him and Irene to the airport where he had arranged with Shibusen to have a proper plane. Using his status as a Shibusen student and a prince he managed to get through security without much hassle even with the sword clearly at his side. That done it was simply waiting out the first class flight to France.
Eventually the plane reached their destination and found an acceptable place to land. After doing so Levi and Irene were let off and pointed in the direction of where they had to go. They were told to look for a small house with a woman sitting outside. Nodding his acknowledgement Levi headed away as the plane took off. Now it was just the matter of finding which particular house was the one they were supposed to go to. Every house would probably a little house compared to what he was used to.
Walking in the pointed direction they soon came close to the targeted town. In doing so Levi noticed the copper colored dust that seemed to be what the ground was made of. He sneered at the filth that dared to soil his boots even if they were an offhand pair. There was no use in trying to kick it off so Levi tried to ignore it and continue on their way to the town. The sooner they could get away from this filth the better as far as he was concerned. Looking around he tried to figure out where the house was that they needed.
All of the houses looked pathetic as far as he could tell. Small little shacks that served their purpose but not much more in his eyes Giving up he simply walked straight into the town in hoped of finding it that way. Of course the new people walking through garnered some attention. The villagers took notice of the two students and muttered to themselves in their native French. Levi did let it slide for all of a few seconds before glaring at the nearest peasant.
”Faire taire!”
Barking his command at the poor commoner he quickly stopped speaking along with the others. Satisfied with his work Levi continued on through the town assuming Irene would simply follow him as he progressed. Kicking up a small cloud of copper dust with each small stomp of his boots Levi finally did manage to guess correctly and find another one of the small houses that happened to have a person sitting outside. Assuming that this was the person they were supposed to meet Levi walked up and set a foot on the first step. Looking at the seated individual his face overall impassive.
”Es-tu celui qui a envoyé la mission? Because if you are this will go a hell of a lot easier if you speak English.”
Waiting for an answer he rested his hands in his pockets and hoped he was right. The sooner they got this out of the way the sooner they could get to the actual mission aspect. He could care less about the peasants and their problems as long as he got to fight something worthwhile. By the sounds of it the kishin here met that standards and Levi couldn’t wait to go and kill it.

Irene did not concern herself too much with the mission that Levi would choose for them. The school had its way of separating missions into levels. They wouldn’t allow them to take something they couldn’t handle, even though she was decently sure that the royal would try and get something tougher. He had this way about him… Better than everything and everybody. As good as he might be, there was a lot of growing for a weapon and technician to do together. He couldn’t just jump into something crazy with her… That would be stupid for both of them.
What he had chosen for them seemed to be a beast that was kidnapping people. Apparently first it started small with animals and grew more violent to people. Then the bodies would show up missing their souls. It reminded her of studies done… signs in childhood of mass murderers and other violent crimes. Throwing stones at animals, performing ‘experiments’ with animals, torturing living creatures. This just seemed to be an accelerated case?
They were assigned to go out the next day. Leave for France. The young woman was anxious in almost every definition of the word. She wanted to go, couldn’t wait to be in her weapon form and prove herself once again. But for now she had to finish the day. She had set the day aside for training, but instead of physical she decided to end it off with mental and soul training. Reading in the library, a sort of meditation, and normal thought for her. The toughest part with Levi would be remaining calm and accepting him. The girl went to the library, reminded herself of the syncing of souls, how they worked together, what her purpose was… She dwelled with her own soul, managing it, warping it to suit her will. And lastly she thought on how best to handle him. The previous part of the day was a bit of a challenge. Her initial emotions to him were anger. That was harder to hide with her soul, emotions being easily masked. She would have to scale back how much things bothered her. Accept that Levi would be leading her. Or she might very well fail this trial.
That would not happen.
To bed, sleep, and then waking up in the morning. She was to meet at the school so they could leave by taxi. She had gathered what she needed the night before, meaning she only needed to get presentable and leave. Pulling on a pair of formfitting blue jeans and black leather boots that climbed to her knees overtop them, she fulfilled the bottom of her outfit. A white tank top clung closely to her skin, a black one layered directly on top of it. Her right arm had two leather strips across her bicep, but were concealed by the deep red jacket that she threw on overtop. Running a comb through her hair and taking care of the rest of the morning routine, the woman headed out the door. It didn’t take too long to get to the school, no longer than normal. But Levi was already there. And on with their travel they went. Into a taxi, to the airport, through security, on a plane… Finally in France. Thankfully, flying had never much bothered her.
Getting off the plane, her gaze traveled around. Much different from the place she had known as her home for the last few years. They were directed where to go vaguely. Irene heard, but did not show any sign she had. The weapon caught Levi’s acknowledgement, that was enough for her. The plane left them as they were, heading off towards a town and situation they knew little about.
Irene offered no words to her potential partner and he didn’t speak either. She didn’t feel uncomfortable in the silence, in fact… this would keep her from being irritated with him. Keeping her senses alert, the woman took in the place around her. So different. Copper dust everywhere, starting to coat her black boots in the color of the soil, it seemed the young man with her was more frustrated with the dirt than she was. Through taking in everything else, Irene kept her eyes open for the house. A small house… a woman waiting outside. A very vague description indeed… People would notice them though, someone would direct their attention to where it needed to go.
Or… Levi would shut them all up.
Irene didn’t much care that he snapped at them. If they weren’t going to help them, they might as well shut up. What good was standing around and muttering to the people next to them? The royal shut them up for a while it seemed, for looks of fear seemed to cross some of them for a moment, the silence stretching not from just her and her partner now, but to the people around. She kept along with him, not missing a step as he would continue on.
The house he set his sights on next seemed like a good guess to Irene. A small cabin and a young woman. She looked… upset. It was more a vibe she gave off, for there were no tears nor sign of them. But the tightness of the face, faint clues of exhaustion… It made sense if this was the woman whose husband went missing. Levi approached, taking the lead as he had always assumed he should take. Irene hung back. No reason to crowd the woman. Him basically in her face, she waited back a few feet with one hand upon her hip.
This was her. Irene had little doubt. And if Levi decided to run his trap like the prick he was, she would let him.

Giselle was entirely lost in her thoughts as the two students approached her. Was this really worth it? If they did find Dorian, would he be alive or in pieces like the others? Would she still have a husband or would she be saying her farewells to a corpse? Her face was blank for the most part, but her eyes were wrought with worry. Giselle didn’t flinch when she was addressed but she did look up rather suddenly, her eyes still somewhat distant. Blinking a few times, her mind caught up with what the green haired young man had said and she nodded, quickly getting to her feet and dusting off the front of her skirt,
“Oui, monsier. It was me. Mais je, er, I hear English better than I speak it. Je sais seulement un peu.” ((I know only a little.))
She thought it best to let them know that. Anything they said to her in English she would very likely understand, but Giselle herself could construct simple sentences at best and only with other French words mixed in. Thankfully the young man seemed to know her native tongue. Glancing over the two, they were very clearly students. For one the young man was asking about the mission, and there was also the fact that Giselle had never seen them in the town before so they had to be outsiders. A few in the ton had been opposed to the idea of seeking aid from elsewhere and had not been too keen on welcoming in people who knew nothing of area or their struggle with the missing. Giselle thought those people were being stupid and so she and a few others had disobeyed them. Keeping her attention on the path set before her, Giselle curtsied on the steps before the two, bowing her head slightly as she did so,
“I am Giselle Delacroix. Thank you very much for coming. We need help.”
Standing straight once again, she wondered where to begin and also just how two teenagers planned to help them. Then again she supposed if a village full of adults couldn’t find the missing until it was too late, then perhaps a couple of kids were exactly what they needed. Fresh eyes to look at what was happening and perhaps see something the entire town had missed. Giselle kept her hands held in front of her, twisting her wedding ring slowly around her finger without realizing. Still, the motion calmed her thought only a little. She needed to have faith though. Even for teenagers, the two standing before her appeared strong, particularly the young man. He even had a sword at his hip that seemed perfect for killing a beast. Her eyes lingered on it for just a moment before she lowered her head again, her blonde hair falling over her face a bit,
“Five people are gone. Three came back dead. Nothing we do can stop la Bête. It keeps returning.”
The latest of those taken being her husband, of course, but she didn’t mention that yet. Of course given the description the town had sent to Shibusen, they probably already knew, that and Giselle wasn’t exactly the perfect picture of a mind at ease. There were dark circles under her eyes from staying awake all night hoping that Dorian would come home, and they were vaguely red from earlier that morning when she woke up yet again and shed tears for the fact that he still had not returned. Lifting her head to look at the students, she turned to the side and gestured towards the door,
“Would you like to come in to talk? Or stay outside?”
Giselle had enough to tell them to set them on the right track. She knew more than anyone else in the village from who it had taken to where it liked to hide. It was one of the reasons the other residents were so suspicious that her Dorian was the beast. Why else would she know so much? They were fools for thinking such things in her mind. Her brother knew the same. Dorian had too before he’d been taken. It paid to be attentive towards such things. She’d previously hoped it would keep her and her loved ones safe. Unfortunately it turned out that knowledge did not exactly equate to power in this case.

At least the woman had the sense to look up when addressed. She did take a moment to blink and stalled before answering the question, Levi simply chalked it up to her being stunned by his presence. Luckily she was the person they were looking for so they could get on with this mission. Unfortunately she wasn’t exactly the most fluent speaker of English and he doubted she knew much if any Dutch. Really now if she couldn’t speak English a conversation in his native language would be the next best thing. Instead he would probably have to hear her speak in the less than ideal French, at least she understood English so he wouldn’t have to taint his mouth more by speaking it.
Perhaps she wasn’t that terrible a person to meet as she did curtsy and bow like other should when around him. Though her speaking was rather irrelevant. They needed help? Well no shit they needed help! That was the reason that he was here in the first place. If it wasn’t for the mission Levi wouldn’t waste his time visiting some little peasant town in France without some very important reason.
Levi picked up on her incessant twisting of the meager ring she wore. It seemed like a worthless gesture to him and he couldn’t understand her reasoning for it. The most likely explanation was that she was worried about something but sitting and playing with some little trinket wasn’t going to fix that. Her explanation of events was little more than what they already knew. So it had killed at least three people and nothing any of the commoners did could stop it. That sounded like a kishin to him so at least they knew what they would be dealing with. But aside from the confirmation that it was indeed a kishin not much really stuck out to him.
Now what was she wasting their time with? Did they want to speak inside the shitty house or not? It was nothing more than another distraction keeping them from getting to the part of the mission he was waiting for. He could care less about where she told them how to find this beast thing as long as she told them. Sighing at her offer Levi was about to tell her off before noticing the filth that had already accumulated to his feet. Grimacing at the dirt he looked up at the woman and his face turned impassive.
”Inside works for now, as long as it doesn’t take too long. The sooner we can find this thing the better for everyone involved.”
Levi didn’t want to waste time going over useless details, he h=simply wanted to find the kishin and kill it. Preferably with Irene so he wouldn’t have to worry about soiling Zegen’s blade. Plus that would also mean that he and Irene could tolerate each other enough to be a team and continue until he was the best at Shibusen. Priorities first though, he wasn’t going to stay outside with the filth on the ground or the worthless people. Being around one peasant was enough for him without the rest lingering around. All the villagers gawking at him was attention he didn’t want for once. They didn’t matter and could always hail him for killing the kishin. Only the people in his country or Shibusen were worth getting any attention from.

Maybe she underestimated her abilities to handle Levi. He seemed extra irritable today. A completely different atmosphere than how she used to go on missions. There used to be an air of comfort and hopefulness from her partner, now it seemed like anger was Levi’s game. In reality, Irene knew that it wasn’t all anger exactly. Irritable was probably closer to correct. They were in a town full of people that wouldn’t know who he was, from what she saw… they didn’t really care for them either. He was getting attention, but not positive. The woman was giving unhelpful information and drawing out something that could be quick, and Irene had learned from their first encounter that Levi thought himself above some explanation.
The woman seemed kind enough, though anyone could tell she was stressed. The way she looked at them was like she was just pulled from deep thought. She was polite, Irene was sure that Levi would appreciate the greeting though she didn’t steal a glance at him. The young woman proceeded to talk in French then. Irene was no expert at the language, she understood words here and there, and speaking it would take a considerable amount of time. Thankfully… she knew some English. If not enough, it seemed Levi would know enough to understand most of it.
She introduced herself as Giselle Delacroix then added a thanks. But… stating they needed help? It must be the stress talking, because they obviously needed help. From what they both had seen though… Not everyone seemed to agree that outside help was the answer. Giselle was slow to speak. Some Irene blamed on the faint language barrier and then most of the rest of it on the stress. Stress even presented itself when the woman began twirling her wedding ring around her finger.
Words came from Giselle once again, in English so Irene understood it. But what she said wasn’t something Levi would appreciate and frankly Irene found no help in it either. They knew all of that already, would this woman actually help them? Or was the description they got all they were going to get? This was starting to look less positive as it went on. A stressed out woman who spoke in broken English that didn’t seem to be offering them too much help.
The last question that came from her Irene couldn’t help but look to her partner for a reaction. First of all, he would not like this house. Second of all, she was offering them nothing. Beyond her polite greeting, she couldn’t imagine Levi was happy. And at her observation, he did not look too pleased. A sigh came from the young royal, Irene only guessed he felt like his time was being wasted. Something changed slightly though… A different annoyance coming from him, the man was looking at his shoes. The dirt? Was that what was bothering him? She wasn’t sure she would ever quite understand him.
Short and to the point, Levi said they would go inside but also pointed out that he wanted it sped up. A faint smirk taunted her yet she held it back. Levi was peculiar. She didn’t know what was going on in his mind, but she was ready to hear more information. Irene did well with details and specifics, she liked to think about problems, have concrete solutions, and know what to expect. The young woman would be in for a surprise when she found out Levi jumped right in.
For now, the three of them were going to enter the house. Irene said nothing, felt no reason to say anything. The woman hadn’t offered anything much to question yet, and Levi already answered that they were going inside. So follow the woman and meister she would.

Giselle nodded to show she understood Levi. Turning from the two students, the blonde unlocked the door and moved inside, standing out of their way as she held it open for the two,
“I will try not to keep you.”
There was a reason for her wanting to speak inside, and that was because of the neighbors. She’d rather them not find out just how much she knew, how much of the beast she’d seen. It was common knowledge that Giselle had seen it, but even her own brother was under the illusion that she had only barely glimpsed it. Giselle wished that were the case, but no. The blonde had gotten a good hard look at the sick creature. It haunted her dreams, hounded her sleep, and made it impossible for her to think straight. Just knowing that Dorian was out there somewhere with that…thing made her blood run cold.
Giselle peered out the door once before shutting it after the students had entered. She wanted to be sure no troublemakers were on their way to harass her again. Dorian is a monster, they said. He’ll eat you alive, they told her. She didn’t believe it. Her husband wasn’t the beast, he couldn’t be. Without saying a word, Giselle moved around Irene and Levi, bypassing the small dining table to the immediate right to root through a small best. From it she withdrew a town map, an old one from the looks of it. The paper was yellowed with age and the writing was worn. Gazing at it for a moment, the blonde beckoned the two forward with a hand,
“I mark the places where la Bête took people. The green marks an animal’s corpse. The red marks a human’s.”
Laying the map out upon the table, Giselle pointed to Ville-sur-Jarnioux, the town’s name clearly visible. Three red X’s were marked within the same stretch of vineyard fields near the outskirts of town. There were at least ten green X’s, making it clear that whatever the beast happened to be had either been honing it’s skills or trying to restrain itself before having moved on to preying on humans. Giselle traced a path from Ville-sur-Jarnioux out past the red marking the bodies of the dead men and out to a poorly drawn tower with a name scrawled in worn writing before looking up at the two,
“No one knows for fact, but many hear…uh…”
Giselle sighed. She didn’t know the English words for what she needed to say. Slightly frustrated with herself, the blonde tapped the name upon the map and switched to her native tongue,
“La plupart des autres villageois ont entendu hurler ici, le Château de Jarnioux.” ((Many of the other villagers have heard howling around here, Castle Jarnioux.))
Since Irene had yet to speak, Giselle looked to Levi,
"Nous pensons que c'est là que les peaux de bête quand ce n'est pas la chasse, mais personne ne l'a vu se diriger vers elle si nous ne pouvons pas savoir avec certitude. Quant à quoi il ressemble ...” ((We think that's where the Beast hides when it isn't hunting, but no one has seen it head towards it so we can't know for certain. As for what it looks like...))
How to go about explaining just what she’d seen. Even more difficult would be explaining the situation in which she’d managed to not only stare long enough at the creature to remember what it looked like, but also how she managed to get away should the two students question her. Giselle wasn’t sure what she would say in her defense. To be quite honest she didn’t remember much about that night. When she’d heard Dorian shouting she had chased after him. The beast had been there right as she turned a corner, right in their very house. Taking a deep breath, Giselle straightened rather than continue leaning over the map as she began her description,
“Il était musclé comme un ours, mais ses mouvements étaient rapides comme celle d'un loup. Il était énorme, plus grand que tout autre animal que j'ai jamais vu. Ses dents étaient si longues qu'elles accroché sur ses lèvres, et il avait défenses de curling extérieur de sa mâchoire. Ses yeux ... Je ne pense pas que je pourrai jamais les oublier aussi longtemps que je vivrai.” ((It was muscular like a bear, but its movements were swift like that of a wolf. It was enormous, bigger than any animal I've ever seen. Its teeth were so long they hung out over its lips, and it had tusks curling outwards from its jaw. Its eyes...I don't think I'll ever forget them as long as I live.))
Her hands were shaking. Giselle went back to twisting her wedding ring around and around on her finger, a distant look clouding her pale eyes,
“Il avait l'air si triste, si peur. C'était presque comme si la Bête pouvait voir ce qu'il faisait, mais pour une raison quelconque n'a pas le pouvoir d'y mettre fin.” ((It looked so sad, so frightened. It was almost like the Beast could see what it was doing, but for whatever reason had no power to stop it.))
Clasping her hands together, Giselle seemed to bring herself out of whatever trance-like state remembering had put her in. Closing her eyes, she bowed her head for a brief moment. When she looked at the students again, the worry was gone and had been replaced with nothing but a serious stare,
“La Bête ne chasse que la nuit. Personne n'a jamais vu le jour. Y at-il autre chose que vous voulez savoir?” ((The Beast only hunts at night. No one has ever seen it during the day. Is there anything else you wish to know?))

Taking the nod Levi assumed that the woman understood him. At least she said that she wasn’t going to keep them too long. She held the door open like a commoner should and Levi walked into the house making sure not to touch anything. The last thing he needed was more contact with peasant things. Overall he thought the entire setup of going inside was a waste of time but he couldn’t blame her. With such nuisances outside it was only natural that she didn’t want them to overhear. Plus he knew she wasn’t going to be fool enough to attempt anything malicious, trying to attack him was a death wish.
Based on how she checked the door after them Levi assumed he was correct. Letting the woman pass Levi watched as she went to look for something. Suspicion or curiosity would be a normal reaction but Levi felt neither of those. He simply wanted the information they needed to kill the target. The problems of some peasant town didn’t concern him in the slightest, the death and soul of a kishin on the other hand did keep his interest.
As they were beckoned over to the table Levi did as she wished for the moment. There was no use trying to order people around here unless he needed to. Technically only Zwasel and Shibusen were domains he ruled over. Not that he wanted an insufferable little town like this in the first place. Walking over to the table he lifted up his shades and gazed at what the woman had pulled out. A map of the town was of only the most basic use to them. Knowing where the monster had attacked things was also only the most basic of information. He didn’t care about what the monster had done; he wanted to know where it was now!
Looking at the map it took all of Levi’s restraint to not shake his head. Three people. Only three people had been taken according to this and the whole town made it seem like this was the greatest tragedy in history. From the map it looked like the attacks had taken place nearly the fringes of the town anyway. Was it that hard to stay away from the outskirts of town? Well he couldn’t blame them; he would spend as little time in these houses as he could if he lived here. It looked like it was up to him to save these peasants from their minor inconvenience.
Things were going decently well until their informant decided to just fucking give up. As she lapsed into her native French Levi’s face turned into a grimace. Did she just ignore how he said English would be better? She was lucky she understood English because he was not going to humor her and speak French for this. At least he understood what she was saying but once again it seemed that all the responsibility fell onto him to make anything happen. These peasants just couldn’t do anything by themselves.
He let her speak and listened to what she said. Pretty much useless in all regards. The more she spoke the more Levi could feel his face sneering at her. She was lucky that it was him who had decided on taking this mission; he could at least make things happen. They had given him next to nothing to work with but considering how everything he did was perfect that wouldn’t be too much of a problem. Listening to her he just wanted her to finish talking. This was somewhat quick all things considered but that didn’t make it any less a waste of time. Once she had finished he continued to look at the map.
”So what you’re saying is you THINK this thing is in the castle but not a single person has bothered to check. Is this entire town so pathetic that they couldn’t be bothered to even try to hunt this thing on their own? At least from what we do know the corpses were missing their souls so this should actually be a kishin.”
Finished looking over the map he stepped away and repositioned his shades to how they should be. This was a waste of time. The so called information was about as helpful to him as the filth on his boots. All they managed to get out of the interaction was a possible location for the creature. It could be in the castle, which he assumed was as shitty as the town, or it could be off somewhere else and nobody in this town would know otherwise. If this was the person who knew the most about this Levi wondered if the rest of the town even knew that people had fucking been taken. Sharply exhaling a sigh he looked out a window.
”As far as what the thing looks like you pretty much told us it looks like a beast, I never would have guessed. Big and muscular with teeth and claws, got it.”
Turning back to look at Giselle over his glasses Levi tried to look less upset than he was. It wasn’t her fault that everything she said was worthless. Too bad right now he was more concerned with completing the mission than the feelings of some peasant in some country that wasn’t his.
”The only thing I wish to know is what I need to do to kill this thing.”
Sighing again he placed his hands in his pockets and waited for what boring thing would inevitably come next. Done with what he had to say he tilted his head to the side to look in Irene’s direction. It wasn’t likely but there was a chance that she had something to add. Not actually saying anything he simply looked at her to see if there was anything that she felt like adding to this whole mess.

This was proceeding fairly slowly but soon enough they would be on their way to completing their mission. Levi wasn’t the only one that was glad to hear that she wouldn’t be keeping them for much longer. As much as she loved her details, Irene didn’t see the woman giving them much more information. She wanted to continue on with this… Also, she wanted to be in her weapon form, sync souls with Levi, and feel that power once again.
So into the small house they went, Levi leading, her behind, and Giselle holding the door and following them in. Separating the woman’s anxiety from her missing husband and from the people around was hard for Irene. Everything she did could be linked to either one. Offering them to come inside, shutting the door behind… Everything was all linked afterall. These attacks took a toll on a person who didn’t know how to handle them.
Now that they had entered the house, she seemed more… secretive and knowing. The woman headed for a stash where she withdrew a map. She showed it to them and explained the markings. She tracked the attacks? Starting with where the animals were taken? To Irene… that seemed peculiar. Unless everyone remembered exactly where their animals were taken… but in a small community like this, animals must vanish every now and then. Would they really track every disappearance? By the time humans got involved, did they really remember where animals were attacked? That being a question in her mind, Irene had to wonder if the woman started documenting attacks when she knew they might get worse. In that case… Irene trusted her a little less. As scared and defenseless as she may seem, it’s possible she could be a threat. It was with this thought that she allowed Levi to become less of a priority in her observations, the woman needed a little more attention in case she would prove to be a threat to them somehow.
Irene’s attention stayed on the young woman the whole while. Attention averted now and again for the showing of the map and specific marks. Eventually, Giselle looked up to them. More explanation of what they heard…. Except she then changed into French. Irene… only caught some of what was being said. Little snips here and there… The castle name stuck out as obvious to her and she assumed they heard noises from it. For the next part, Irene couldn’t understand most of it. A few words, but not enough to make a good conclusion. Her face stayed mostly impassive except for the quick flash of confusion that crossed through her expression. It seemed that part would be lost to her.
At this point, Irene decided to glance at Levi to see if he would give her any sign. What she saw in return was a sort of… anger? She hadn’t been paying attention to him to see when he had first started reacting negatively, but she could only assume it was something he was blowing out of proportion. Giselle had done nothing that was extremely rude.
More French bombarded her after a short pause. From what Irene understood, it was a description. Bear, swift, wolf, big, animal… It wasn’t completely making sense in her own language, but it was enough that Irene knew she didn’t have to understand. She was fairly confident that her and Levi could distinguish the difference between an animal and a Kishin egg. Still… the woman seemed nervous. Irene wasn’t sure if she was glad for that or not. The wedding ring twisting around her finger, she couldn’t help but feel some sadness for the woman. All she had was gone, who knows if he was coming back to her?
The last description Irene would have loved to understand, but unfortunately she didn’t get. Not enough of the language was known to her. But, after it, Giselle was bringing herself more conscious to those around her. She bowed her head and her expression completely changed. That was a bit unnerving… Such a difference, so easily brought. That wasn’t something she was expecting from this young woman.
Lastly, the woman asked a question. Irene knew that from the tone of voice, the intervals in pitch changing. But once again the words were lost to her. Her attention having moved back and forth from Levi to Giselle periodically, she waited for what might come next. Her temporary partner looked fired up and in no positive way. Of course, he started on some sort of little rant. Irene was actually a bit surprised at how heartless he sounded. He backed off a bit, his smugness completely coming into focus again. He really did see himself as above everything. She fought to keep from rolling her eyes. As much as she may despise his attitude, she would not look like a broken team to others. With him looking to the window and speaking again, it seemed he was basically done with all of this talking. The sarcasm was pouring form him…
With his last statement, he seemed less riled than previous. Was that physical effort for someone else? And that’s when he looked in her general direction. Was that also a thought towards another person? Irene guessed there were even surprises from self-centered bastards. As far as Irene was concerned, their main goal was to kill this Kishin and acquire its soul. For some reason… Giselle had put a lot of effort and investigation into this. Something deeper was bothering this young woman, but Irene was not about to open that can of worms to satiate her own curiosity. The wrath of the young royal, she did not feel like tempting.
Staying within distance of the young woman, Irene reached a hand out for Giselle’s. Her right hand, her aim to merely make gentle contact with a few fingers to the other woman’s hands. A comforting gesture that had been used on her many a time.
”He’s rough around the edges. But you can count on us handling this.”
And with those few words, Irene then retreated her hand and put both of her hands into her jean pockets. Taking a step back, she looked to Levi. Her face was mostly impassive, but a bit of warning was held in her eyes. She wasn’t scolding him, not yet. She understood that he was very… different. But she would only take so much of him and he better not start insulting her to her face. Her gaze then moved back to the woman.
”Unless you think you have something else to add on its location, habits, or weaknesses, I believe he is eager to continue on.”
Irene could only assume she was correct. She had other questions, but nothing that would really help with the mission, just help with her own understanding of the whole situation. From what Irene knew… Most people didn’t fully understand the concept of Kishin eggs, much less how to kill them. Returning her attention to Levi, she wanted to know if there was anything more from him as well. But… she believed they would be leaving soon and on their way to the castle.

Giselle kept her face as passive as possible at the young man’s words. If he didn’t like the information she had to offer, then that was just too bad. She really didn’t know what else to tell them. Truth be told, there really wasn’t much else that she could tell them in the first place, personal superstitions aside. The blonde woman did tilt her head slightly and don a somewhat confused expression at the end of Levi’s first semi-rant though,
“Kishin?”
She’d never heard the word before, but from her understanding of where it was placed in the sentence that this was whatever the beast actually was. That was somewhat reassuring in a way. If he knew what this creature was, perhaps he would know better how to kill it. Still, his sarcasm and general state of being displeased with what she’d said wasn’t lost on her. The blonde narrowed her eyes, the pale blue color seemingly becoming darker because of this action. She wasn’t angry, that wasn’t the right word for it. She didn’t hate him; she didn’t know him well enough. Still, what clouded her eyes was not at all friendly, and the more he spoke the quicker the blonde twisted that thin gold band around her finger.
She’d had a retort ready the minute he’d set his eyes on her. The only thing that stopped her from opening her mouth and snarling several harsh words at him was the sudden soft touch to her right hand. The contact shocked Giselle out of focus, her gaze shifting to Irene. Her shoulders had hunched and her expression no longer aggressive in any way. Giselle more looked like a deer in headlights at the moment, although she did relax a bit. Her shoulders fell soon enough and her gaze softened at the young lady’s words. Her faith in him was reassuring. It brought a barely noticeable smile to Giselle’s lips, but it faded almost instantly. Faith or no, what really mattered was whether or not they could kill the beast. That was what really mattered. If it was too late, if her Dorian was already dead, then she hoped that they made the wretched thing suffer before it left this world.
Anything else that she could add? Giselle had to think for a moment. Frustration still weighed on her mind, partly from the language barrier but also from Levi. It disrupted her thought process, keeping her from thinking straight. Still, there were a few things she supposed could possibly be helpful, although she was sure the young man would be none too pleased to hear anything else she said regardless if it was helpful. She snuck a cold glace at Levi but then made Irene her focus, her gaze back to that same soft but distant look,
“Only a few little things. No one ever sees it during the day. It only comes at night, so I fear hunting it must wait.”
Giselle paused, thinking. She was no longer twisting the ring around her finger, but she still held her hands together in a way that she was touching it. It was a necessity for her at this point,
“The doctor who look at the dead, he said that the missing were kept alive for a time. It does not kill the taken right away. It hunts them once, takes them, and then makes them run so it can chase them again.”
And such a fate could have already happened to Dorian, and she would have no way of knowing. That made her chest hurt a bit, but there would be no tears, not in front of these two at least. She tried to keep hope alive. Dorian had been gone for longer than any of the other victims. If he was alive, then God help him. If he was dead, then God rest his soul. Giselle opened her mouth to say something else but paused, her gaze shifting to Levi again. The blonde shut her mouth and pursed her lips. It wasn’t important. A local superstition. All it would do was serve as a distraction to them and maybe make them suspicious of the townspeople, not that she could blame them. Giselle herself had a few suspicions of her own about the neighbors, but that was her business. Sighing, she shrugged her shoulders slightly,
“This is all I know.”

By now Levi was hardly paying much attention to Giselle. He figured she didn’t have any worthwhile information to offer them so there really was no point in being here. Couldn’t she have just told Shibusen about the castle being a probable location so they could have just skipped the whole briefing bullshit? It would have been much easier to just land and go straight to where the beast was instead of wasting time and his patience here. Hearing Giselle say kishin in an uncertain tone only made his annoyance worse. She didn’t even know what a kishin was, let alone if this thing was one. Did she think they were just some all-around fucking monster hunters?
Levi didn’t notice her eyes at all; his attention was more focused on the map she had pulled out. Possibly the only useful thing she had done was have the map and tell them where the kishin might be. It wasn’t a sure location and that pissed him off but it was the best lead they had. Looking over the map he worked on figuring out how to get to the castle from where they were. His view of the map wasn’t the best but from earlier he had a pretty good idea.
Still listening to what she said Levi was not pleased with her words. Hunting it would have to wait? Till night? Just great! The whole point of their mission was going to be delayed because of this town’s incompetence. The worst part was he couldn’t do much about it because they didn’t know where the thing was. If they went to the castle and didn’t find the kishin they would end up fucked and without any leads. It would be better just to wait till night and make sure they found this thing.
Hearing the comment about the beast hunting those it caught Levi just wanted to find this thing more. If it was hunting people it must be pretty good, all the more fun to kill. At least he was right in picking a mission that would be a decently fun combat setup. He didn’t feel like wasting time hunting some low class creature, he simply wanted to plunge Irene’s weapon form into its heart and retrieve its soul. Levi did smirk at his thoughts but that was the only amusing part of this situation. The sooner they were done with this the better.
Amused by the idea of the kishin trying to hunt him Levi would have love to see that attempted but that would take too much time. Giselle admitted that she didn’t know anything else useful so there really was no reason to be here. The only negative was they had to wait till night to find the beast. More work than he wanted but not anything that would get in the way of the mission.
”Fine. We can start where those human attacks happened and move to the castle, once night gets here that is.”
He wasn’t thrilled at having to wait but it was better than mission the thing. If they missed the beast they would have to stay here longer and there was no way that Levi was going to be doing that. Still not bothering to look at Giselle or give her his attention he looked out the window to see if there was anything of remote interest.
”The beast will be dead by morning. Donc, ne pas baiser inquiétude à ce sujet.”
He couldn’t be that nice to peasants now could he? Done speaking it was only a matter of waiting for the hunting to begin.

The other two in the room were at odds… This fact was semi-irritating to Irene. Why couldn’t Levi just have kept his mouth shut? She realized he thought he was the most wonderful Royal or whatever... but couldn’t he just put up with a peasant for a few minutes before going off and calling everyone weak and useless? The look that Giselle shot was easily caught by Irene. It unsettled her a bit, for she wasn’t quite sure what emotion to place that look under. Her first instinct was anger or disgust… but at the same time it seemed more than that. It bothered the young weapon. Which only brought her thoughts back to her suspicion behind the girl’s seemingly innocence. They would have to be wary of her, especially since Levi already pissed her off.
At the mention of the Kishin, Giselle seemed somewhat confused by the word. That was expected. A lot of people didn’t know their part of the world. Remaining ignorant and generally blissful, except when they were attacked. It seemed Giselle had switched her attention to focus to herself… It seemed logical, though she didn’t want to be the focus point if the woman switched back into French, she wouldn’t understand… Levi was preoccupied with his own thoughts though. It seemed he didn’t much care when people stood up to him. Once again, it made sense in her mind. At the moment he was trying to study the map.
Giselle spoke up again, mentioning that no one had seen it during the day and that they would have to wait until night. Irene didn’t much agree with that statement. Lots of things weren’t seen during the day but that didn’t mean they couldn’t be found. In fact, that was generally the time when creatures were sleeping and in one spot. That would make it easer to track down, especially if it resided in the castle. In her opinion, they should investigate the castle in the day. Even if the kishin was not there, they may find signs of it. Light would fare them better. But when she looked to Levi for any clue as to his thoughts, he looked mostly frustrated. Was he just taking what this woman said and listening to it? Was she missing some logic that the other two got? Holding back any other expression crossing her face, she remained blank. It seemed Giselle had more to add.
At that point the woman mentioned that the creature was a hunter. Not only did it catch its prey, but set it out again and recaught it. If they waited until evening it had a greater chance to recatch the prey it already had. Plus, they could be searching for live individuals. Why did these two seem to be inclined to wait? Just because no one had seen it YET in the daytime? Irene barely heard the woman finalize that’s all she knew, her own mind spinning. Levi was replying, allowing Irene to focus in a bit.
He certainly was going to wait until nightfall. What was she missing? This seemed illogical in every sort of angle she thought of it. Even if they found nothing until nightfall, they could start exactly where and how Levi was suggesting now anyway. Why wait? If they could find the woman’s husband, even if they didn’t find the creature, they would at least know where it would return. What the fuck was she missing that had these two so convinced to wait until nightfall? When their senses were weaker than a creature that hunted in the darkness? This seemed stupid. And the more she thought about it, the more uneasy she became.
She glanced over Giselle once more, just trying to make sure she missed no sign from the young woman, then she turned. Her back to the woman and closing a bit of distance between her and Levi. Her gaze moved to his, his glasses coming into full view. The blank expression remained, though the way she spoke seemed strained and was kept quiet to hopefully keep Giselle from hearing all of it.
”Why. Why are we waiting? I’ll follow you no matter what you decide, but it doesn’t make sense to me. I also don’t trust her.”
The very last sentence was the least audible. Spoken so quietly she knew Giselle would not hear, the problem was that Levi might not hear her either. The woman seemed nice enough, but really did rub her wrong. Something was off, and Irene wasn’t sure if it was because the woman was not as innocent as she seemed or just because Kishins screwed everything up. Her eyes remained on her ‘partner’ for another moment, before she stepped away once more, a more neutral stance between the two. One side to the woman, one side to Levi, her gaze traveling back to the woman, Giselle.

Giselle nodded and bowed her head at Levi’s words. She trusted the two students as much as she could, but even that was very miniscule. Or perhaps trust wasn’t the word she was looking for. Maybe her thoughts were too clouded with worry for the blonde to even think straight, to fully wrap her head around the situation anymore. Twisting a few strands of hair around in her fingers, she nodded to the map,
“You can take it if it pleases you. It may help.”
The students were unfamiliar with the area. Giselle hoped that the old map would help them somehow, even if it only prevented them getting lost on their hunt. She wanted more than anything to be able to stop worrying like the young man had told her, but until the beast was good and dead, until she saw it with her own two eyes again with its head mounted on a pike she could not stop her thoughts from drifting to the worst case scenario. The worry showed plainly on her face, her look becoming distant again and her eyebrows knitting together. Would they really be able to defeat the beast? If they did, would they find Dorian during their hunt for it? Would he be alive or would Giselle soon be making funeral arrangements and donning a black veil? Giselle closed her eyes and stepped back to lean again the wall nearest the door. She couldn’t take much more of this not knowing. It would be the death of her.
Oblivious to the brief words exchanged between the students and to Irene’s distrust, Giselle opened her eyes only when a banging on the front door reached her ears. She gave an apologetic glance at the two as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear,
“Please excuse me.”
Giselle hurried over to the door and opened it just a crack, peering out carefully to see who was outside. Her brows furrowed in confusion for a brief moment as she saw who it was, opening the door entirely,
“Adrien?”
Her brother remained on the steps, slightly hunched over and breathing hard. He’d run all the way from the vineyard to her doorstep, and the look on his face was one of pure concern, something much different than she’d seen earlier that morning. Giselle placed her hands on his shoulders, her voice shaking,
“Qu'est-ce que c'est? Qu'est-il arrivé?” ((What is it? What’s happened?))
Adrien straightened and looked down at his sister, his gaze gentle as he tried very hard to conceal pity. Giselle saw it, though, and the fingers of her right hand went immediately to her wedding ring. No. No it couldn’t be. Her brother looked over his shoulder for a brief moment before speaking,
“La partie de chasse qui est sorti ce matin, ont-ils parlé de vous encore?” ((The hunting party that went out this morning, have they spoken to you yet?))
Giselle shook her head and Adrien seemed almost relieved, nodding inside,
“Les étudiants avec vous? Ils peuvent vouloir entendre cela.” ((Are the students with you? They may want to hear this.))
Again, Giselle nodded, quickly stepped aside to allow her brother in. Adrien nodded to the students and Giselle stood silently beside him, looking up at her brother with worry plain on her face still. What in the world was going on? That morning he’d been so abrasive, why was her even here? Adrien stood silently for a moment, gathering his thoughts before speaking. Giselle looked to Irene and Levi and gestured to her brother,
“My brother. He says something happened.”
Her gaze shifted back to the other blonde in the room,
“Right?”
Adrien nodded solemnly,
“Unfortunately yes.”
Adrien had more schooling than Giselle and therefor was better at English than she. Turning his gaze on the students, he began,
“I can’t know how much my sister has told you, but a small hunting party set out at dawn today to try and find the missing, mainly Giselle’s husband.”
He glanced at his sister as he said this and she bowed her head, lowering her eyes to the floor. She had a bad feeling about this. Adrien continued,
“They started out by where the second body was found and trekked out to the castle. They searched the grounds as they followed the beast’s paw prints, massive things as big as tires. A few of the idiots wouldn’t go near the old gates out of fear and superstition, but the rest did search the castle and…well, it’s pretty clear it’s been living there, at least during the night.”
Adrien paused and pinched the bridge of his nose. The entire thing was a headache to him,
“There were long, deep claw marks on the walls in a few too many places to be considered random. They checked everywhere they could that wasn’t blocked by a wall collapsing or hazardous to their health. They couldn’t find the beast anywhere, but it’s definitely been using the castle as its own personal hide out and killing ground. There was blood all over the main courtyard, they said, and bones lying in corners and crevices. They didn’t find Dorian or Jean-Luc, however…”
He stopped, turned to face Giselle who took a small step back. Adrien withdrew something small from his pocket, holding it in his closed fist and gazing at his sister with what could only be pity,
“They found this just outside the old gates. Je suis vraiment désolé, ma chère.” ((I am so sorry, my dear.))
Giselle forced herself to watch as he opened his hand. Upon his palm rested Dorian’s wedding ring, the gold obscured on the outside by a single smear of red. The blonde choked on her own breath, shaking her head and stared at the band of gold like it was a venomous snake. Her eyes welled up with tears that fell almost instantly as her face contorted into an expression of pure grief. Adrien hugged his sister. She struggled, but he held her as Giselle completely lost it,
“Non! Non, non, non, pas lui! Ce n'est pas mon Dorian, s'il vous plaît ne pas lui!” ((No! No, no, no, not him! Not my Dorian, please not him!))

Still not wanting to speak with Giselle, Levi continued to plan things on his own. As far as he was concerned it didn’t seem that difficult if everything went like he wanted. Waiting until night was annoying but there wasn’t anything to he could do about that. Noticing Irene approaching him Levi waited for the weapon to get near him. So she was questioning his decision to wait until night? Of all things that wasn’t a particularly odd question and she did state that she would follow him regardless. The last bit that she didn’t trust Giselle also did not escape his notice. Putting forth the unusual effort of trying to keep his voice quiet he responded.
”Neither do I, and that is exactly why we’re waiting. If she’s wrong and the kishin isn’t in the castle we have no clue as to where it will be. Plus if it runs away like a coward it will be easier to corner it going into the castle as opposed to leaving it.”
There may have been some flaws in his plan but it was the best he could come up with considering the weak information he had. People had been attacked by the creature but those were pathetic peasants who may or may not have even had weapons. Judging from Giselle’s description this thing was very animalistic in appearance but he couldn’t tell about action. Would it face them like a human or run away like a scared mongrel? Levi wanted to be prepared for either so it didn’t just escape them by hiding in the forest.
Unfortunately the woman noticed him looking at the map and spoke about it. He would have just taken the stupid map if he wanted it that badly, that was why he was thinking about it. Was the map really such a worthwhile thing to have to hunt this thing? Sadly it did have a certain use for the moment considering they were away from familiar territory. The other deterrent was that Levi would have to make physical contact with a piece of commoner trash, even if it was possibly useful for the mission. When the knocking began and Giselle went to check Levi ventured over to the map and looked it over some more before taking it as quickly as he could and placing it in his pocket. He made sure to wipe his hand against his leg for good measure after.
Walking away from the table Levi kept his attention on the others as he returned to where he had been previously. Hearing their conversation Levi was somewhat interested in the recent developments. A hunting party actually did try to go after the kishin? That was at least a start to fixing how things were going. Hearing that whatever the guy knew was worth them knowing only added to the slight curiosity. Maybe there actually was someone in this town who could offer them some bit of substantial information for this fucking mission.
As the two entered the building Levi waited for this important information to be said. Learning that the new guy was Giselle’s brother didn’t give him much hope considering the useless information she had given them. He started by saying it was unfortunate that he had news so it was most likely going to be negative somehow. What, did another unarmed peasant get killed? And right from the start he gave them more information. Giselle hadn’t mentioned a hunting party or any kind of resistance on the town’s part. Perhaps he had responded to quickly to her words but she was the one who decided to leave out any of the useful information.
Finally there was some bit of confirmation. The kishin was living in the castle but since he said night and was kind of alive Levi guessed it wasn’t there now. Listening to the story Levi waited for the bad news that was sure to come. Yes yes the details of the castle were nice and all but it would be better for them just to see it themselves. Knowing some parts of the castle were blocked off was useful if they did end up going there. As Giselle’s brother finished he didn’t say anything as Giselle dealt with her own emotional problems and redirected his attention to Irene.
”That is why we’ll wait for night. At least that way we have a chance of finding it.”
If the group was right and the missing people were indeed gone that did offer a few better circumstances for them. With the two dead they didn’t have to worry about them getting in the way if a fight did happen around them. Also it meant the kishin may be out hunting for new prey so there was a higher chance they would run into it. Not that he would say any of this currently but it was something to keep in mind. He didn’t pay much attention to Giselle as she went about her mourning; regardless of her problems there was still an interesting hunt to be ready for.

The woman was still nervous, that much was to be expected. Irene noticed the twisting of her hair, the facial expression… As much was unknown to Giselle, she didn’t realize how much information she did have. At least she had a clue to where her husband went. That bit of bitterness was held in the young weapon.
Levi’s response to her question was not satisfying. It was basically a reiteration of what she already knew. A quick flash of anger through her mostly expressionless face, then it dissipated. This was all wrong and she didn’t like it. They were all wrong.
Giselle then gave them the map. When the words first came from the woman, Irene held back the urge to roll her eyes. Not at her, but at her partner. He would find no real appreciation for that gesture. If he wanted it, he felt entitled to it. Giselle wasn’t keeping that from him if Levi wanted it… Of course, the woman was only trying to be helpful. She wanted her husband found and the place to be at rest once again.
The banging on the door was a slight surprise. A few thoughts ran through her head, ranging from a friendly visit to the villagers she didn’t trust attacking. But… Giselle didn’t seem too worried. People going missing, her wanting to be in her house to be out of the view of the town…. And she was going to answer the door without a worry? This woman really was a trip… Regardless, Irene wanted to see who was there and what they wanted. And trouble would be dealt with quickly anyway.
Giselle moved past them and to the door. Though she looked mostly unconcerned, she did only open the door a crack… Maybe Irene was missing something… But soon enough confusion crossed Giselle’s face and the door was wide open revealing a man. Apparently his name was Adrien and Giselle was familiar with him. He was out of breath but didn’t look injured. The quick scene unfolded of the interacting, him catching his breath, and Giselle seemingly asked what happened.
The man’s words were mostly lost Irene, but he looked relieved when Giselle shook her head. A faint look of curiosity was on the weapon’s face, watching the two and trying to figure out the scenario. By now the man was fully in the house and Giselle beside him. He was introduced as her brother and he brought news, unfortunate news.
His English was better, thankfully. Irene listened as the man spoke, watching him for any nonverbal signs. A hunting party went out… And while the details were interesting, Irene would not be satisfied by the findings of others… Especially when they didn’t know what they were dealing with. A quick shift happened then where the brother presented something to Giselle. His face looked pained and apparently they had found this near the castle. It was a ring smeared with blood, most likely his wedding ring. Giselle broke down then and Adrian was there to comfort her. Thank goodness… Levi wouldn’t do It and Irene proved to be mostly bad at that.
Her attention moved to Levi, noticing that he was focusing on her as well. What came next was a surprise to her. He repeated that was why it was good for them to wait until dark. Because some idiots went and explored the castle thinking some big wolf might be lurking around? It aggravated her that the reason she felt more concerned about not going out to discover more about this Kishin was the exact same reason that Levi felt the need to stay put. He didn’t trust her or Giselle.. but he’d trust information of some random hunting party? The anger set into her face a bit longer than before. Nothing bad better come of this. Nothing.
”Fine.”
