And even now as they drew closer, they still caught her off guard! Again the icicles were useless. Watching the Meister knock them aside like toothpicks only made the mad soul more anxious. Still, they acted a proper distraction, and she had gotten so close! She still wasn’t close enough, though, she needed to be closer. The spray of ice as the icicles were dispatch littered the frozen lake with lose ice that would hinder movement even more, making it all the more slippery to try and properly stand upon.
The Kishin Egg herself had no issue with it. The ice was her home, always had been, and always would be should she manage her escape. When the world had turned its back on her, the lake had been there. When people had done nothing but demean and belittle her just for being different, the cold had taken her in with open arms, sheltered her with blankets of snow and sheets of ice that they could not pierce with their judging eyes. Now, though, it could not protect her, and so thrown into the open she fought for her life.
Her strike to the girl’s chest missed. She had avoided a strike to the arm, thankfully, but her jab at the Meister’s eyes also ended fruitlessly. The feeling of cold metal at the back of her neck sent a chill of dread through her as it pressed her forward and down. The mad soul fell to her knees, the joints protesting at they hit the ice at a highly uncomfortable angle, but she had turned herself around in an instant. Fear flashed through her eyes seeing that spear raised high about the Asian girl’s head, but she put a leash on it and tried to think. Quick, quick, she must be quick! This would not be the end of her, not this easily!
Sinking was her only option. Closing her eyes, the ice melted beneath her and water surrounded her again. Silver slivers blinked open again to the dim light and enacted her next best plan immediately. She must be quick. Waiting for the sound of the spear hitting the ice in the missed hit she surfaced behind the pair with a malicious look painted across her features. Hoisting only her upper body out of the water, she wrapped her bony and webbed hands around the Meister’s ankle and opened her mouth wide. Rows of serrated teeth sank into the girl’s calf muscle, a low hiss leaving her as blood hit her tongue. She had her, now, all she had to do was drag her down into the dark water beneath the ice.
Kicking her legs beneath the icy water and keeping her jaws locked on the girl’s leg, she propelled herself backward with every intention of dragging the Meister with her. If she could get her into the water, then the cold would do the rest of her work for her. Shock and hypothermia would set in almost immediately to her previous knowledge. That was the way the rest of them had gone, anyways. Yes, she hadn’t even lifted a finger for those other souls. All she’d needed to do was lure them out, sink them, and then watch them drown.

The spear was held high over her head for only a second before Misaki brought it down with all her strength. She had no intentions of backing off, not now when the Kishin Egg was there on her knees in front of her. This was their best chance, likely the best they would get, she needed to hit her and hit her hard before she disappeared again. The thing was scared of her; Misaki could see it in her eyes. Good, she should be scared. She should be terrified, but not for long once the team put a spear through her chest. Unfortunately the tin Japanese girl’s plans would sink under the ice along with the Kishin Egg,
“Damn it! What is this, whack-a-mole?”
Technically it would be whack-a-kishin, but she didn’t care. The sound of metal clanging against ice filled her ears and only added to the Meister’s frustration. She’d had her. She’d fucking had her and she’d still managed to slip back underwater. This was going nowhere, she needed a better plan. Since the thing kept using projectiles, she could only assume that meant this thing wasn’t the best as close combat, either that or she couldn’t take a hit. If Misaki could keep her within a few feet, maybe then she’d be able to hit her in succession and keep her from submerging again. Either that or they would have to somehow lure her out of the water and off the ice; but she doubted the Kishin Egg was that stupid.
No sooner had she righted her stance than she felt cold, bony hands wrap around her ankle. The dread that dug into her chest followed suit, as did that terrible feeling of those teeth she’d been trying to avoid sink into her leg. That low hiss she heard was accompanied by her own strangled groan as she grit her teeth. This thing was not about to hear her scream. Misaki wouldn’t give it the satisfaction. However there was that fact that she needed to move as little as possible. She remembered seeing those rows of teeth. If she moved, she’d only hurt herself more. Working through the searing pain shooting up her leg, she made to turn the Demon Spear in her hand and jab backwards with it at the Kishin Egg’s face.
But that was before a sharp jerk sent her completely off balance. With one leg locked in a set of jaws and the other having been a bit too far in front of her, Misaki fell forward onto the ice, the spear leaving her grip and clattering beside her a few feet away. Oh no, they were not going to play this game again. Once on their first mission had been enough. With a strangled sound of pain and frustration leaving her, Misaki twisted herself around and drew her fist back, gathering her wavelength tightly behind it before punching the damned thing right in the face.
Not even waiting for its jaws to relent on their grip of her leg, Misaki grabbed fistfuls of the thing’s hair and yanked, forcibly dragging it out of the water with all her might. She and Dion were ending this bullshit now. Once the thing was out of the water, Misaki reach for Dion’s spear form and took it in her hands again, still not taking her eyes off the mad soul for a second as she did so. Ignoring the protests from her injured leg, she threw herself over the thing and straddled it before raising the spear over her head again,
“Sayonara, slimey!”
Misaki brought the spear down, aiming to drive the pointed end through the Kishin Egg’s chest.

There was little Dion could do and it was no short of annoyance to him. It wasn’t that he didn’t have faith in Misaki’s ability it was just that he wanted to help her if he could. His manual extension and retraction had assisted her but that was about the extent to his aid. Dion would have felt much better if the kishin was impaled already or at least skewered through some appendage. Them being on the ice it knew was his main concern and he didn’t want to underestimate it now that Misaki would take the brunt of any mistakes.
Being on the kishin’s home turf was clearly showing as it managed to continuously avoid any serious strike from Misaki. Each time it managed to worm its way out of a fatal blow via luck, reflexes, or using the damn ice around them. If only they had been lucky and cornered it on land this would have been over in no time. Regardless they still weren’t in any major sort of danger as their target was too busy dodging to land anything major. Sooner or later they would get the chance they needed to end its fucked up existence.
He felt the disturbance through his meister and that was enough. The kishin fucking bit her? Really now, that was just low. Dion was no stranger to street fighting but biting someone was such a pathetic thing to do. Had this been their first mission or had Dion not believed Misaki would be able to work her way out of it he would have transformed and pierced through the kishin himself. It still lingered in his mind but he resisted the urge to do so in favor of silently waiting for what he knew was to be his meister doing something awesome.
Has his attention been focused on the kishin instead of his meister this would have still happened the moment he was knocked out of Misaki’s hand. Separation from his meister was not a thing he was going to deal with after last time. However he noticed that she seemed to have her own plan to reunite them and kill this fucker so he waited. If anything happened that seemed out of place he would be in human form in seconds and stopping the kishin from hurting his meister any more. At least the plan of the kishin was easy enough to see.
Things fell into place and he watched as Misaki made the kishin her bitch and set everything up in their favor. She took him back in her hands and rearranged them into a more auspicious position. They were all ready for the killing blow now and Dion couldn’t wait to feel his weapon form impale the kishin. As Misaki raised him above her head he added his own flair to the attack. He had managed to trick the thing earlier with his ability to extend and it would be a shame to kill it without it knowing how. Extending into his six foot form Dion was ready to end this.
Dion never factored in the possibility of them not killing it now so there was no reason to hide his full form. The worst that could happen was that the kishin would see it and if it got away keep more distance that they could close. Even then it would only add to the fun of it! If nothing else Dion was sure of his own abilities to kick ass so there was no real threat in letting the thing know why it was dead. Leaving the rest up to Misaki he let her go for a finishing strike.

She had the Meister down on the ice, she could do this. Even as she struggled, the mad soul didn’t let up for a second, sinking her teeth deeper into her flesh and continuing to pull her towards a watery grave. Turning in the Kishin Egg’s grasp would award the Asian girl a far more serious injury. Serrated teeth, rows upon rows of them, were dragged through her leg, muscle and sinew no doubt protesting violently. She felt a tooth or two snap free from biting too hard, but she didn’t seem to care. Only the sudden light behind her eyes would break her grip on the Meister and send her reeling. She’d seen her raise her fist but hadn’t quite expected that. She’d expected a punch to the face, which she would have taken and kept her hold over her regardless. Soul Purge, on the other hand, was a different issue entirely. Feeling the girl’s wavelength drive into her face and rattle around inside her skull rendered the Kishin Egg daze, eyes slamming shut and a shrill yelp tearing from her throat. In addition to the daze was the pain. Her nose was broken, she could feel it, and more teeth broke loose and nearly choked her before she spat them out into the water. Blood flowed freely from her nostrils and drenched her lips as she tried to blink away the pain only to have another sort be felt in her scalp. Her hands flew to her hair, beating against the Meister’s fists erratically and hissing all the while, still unable to fully open her eyes or think straight. She felt numb from head to shoulders, the only constant thought present being pain, pain, pain. She felt her body leave the water and began to thrash more violently, her legs kicking and sliding about on the ice, but still she was held firmly by that damned girl! At last she was released, her eyes barely open as slivers for a moment before she shook her head and scooted backwards, propping herself up on her elbows and inching away but there was no escape now. The Meister straddled her, pinning her against the ice. The Kishin Egg still did not give in. She continued to kick her legs and squirm, succeeding only in turning herself over onto her stomach, arms extended out in front of her and claws dragging over the ice as she tried to drag herself away to safety. The cracking of bones as the spear impaled her echoed loudly inside of her head, the pain hitting her instantly as it drove through her spine and pierced her heart. It was a sickening sound, one that made her stomach churn just before her eyes grew dimmer. They had finally reopened, but the ice and expanse of forest beyond the lake’s edge seemed blurry somehow, distant. The cold was suddenly far more apparent and as her breath left her, she wondered how much of the red smeared over the ice nearby was hers. Despite the team’s earlier warning as they had pursued the Kishin Egg, a small crowd had gathered about the docks. Tuuli and Virva were among them, standing rather close to each other as what appeared to be the entire town of Inari watched the team battle. As the Meister had culled the creature, cheering had broken out in their favor. The doppelganger was dead, their town free from its torment. Virva had covered her face regardless. Tuuli had a hold on her shoulders in case the poor girl fainted, but there was something else she’d noticed during the fight. The mad soul’s face was familiar to her. Only as the spear was brought down did she realize where she remembered it from, her voice barely above a whisper as the horrendous realization hit her, “Hilja…”A pool of blood slowly gathered beneath the team and the slain Kishin Egg. After a few moments of nothing but cheering from the frozen shore, a distinctive red glow appeared as her soul left her, floating aimlessly above her shoulder blades.

Damn if her leg wasn’t killing her, but Misaki didn’t give two fucks. This was the killing strike, if she fucked it up now then they’d have one hell of a time getting another chance at such a clear shot. The Kishin Egg was still struggling, kicking, hissing, the whole nine yards. Misaki would have rolled her eyes had she not been so focused. As the thing twisted over onto its stomach, the tiny Japanese girl was having none of its trying to get away bullshit. If anything, this had to be one of the most pathetic sights she’d ever seen, and she’d had more than enough of it. Very much aware that she was bleeding quite a bit onto the ice, she raised the extended Demon Spear and brought it down onto their foe with all her strength, plunging it into the thing’s flesh and trying not to grin too much at the sound of cracking bone.
Misaki twisted the spear once just for good measure. It never hurt to do more internal damage than necessary with a killing blow, especially if it meant making sure that a Kishin Egg was good and dead. She would have none of that suddenly rising from the grave as they were leaving and wrecking their shit, she just wasn’t in the mood for it. As the mad soul fell still, she let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding, pulling her Weapon out of its back with a good yank and laying him down alongside the dead thing. Her work was done. All Dion had to do now was get that soul that they had most definitely earned.
The cheers were unexpected but appreciated nonetheless. Carefully scooting off and away from the dead Kishin Egg, Misaki looked over to the crowd that had gathered and sighed. Hadn’t they heard her when she’d said stay away from the docks? Maybe some of them didn’t speak English, but even so weren’t they afraid? What if they’d failed? Not that they had or would have. There was no way Misaki would have let that happen. Still, it was nice hearing some extra appreciation from the masses, so Misaki raised bother hands and waved, giving a somewhat pained smile but looking as mischievous as ever all the while.
Catching sight of the red glow looming over the corpse’s upper back, she grinned and looked to her partner,
“I’d call that a job well done, what about you?”
Well done save for that fact that she was still bleeding. Always one to oppose, Misaki still decided to test whether she could stand of not. On the bright side, she wasn’t missing a chunk of her leg. Unfortunately there were still those deep teeth marks, some actually containing teeth that had gotten stuck in the wound when she’d pulled herself free. Maybe she’d make a necklace out of them or something once she was home and of course if whatever hospital they wound up inevitably taking her to allowed her to keep them. Oh she hoped they would let her keep them, that would be so badass! The impending trip to the hospital wasn’t exactly something she was looking forward to but she couldn’t just wander around with an injury like she had currently.
Turning herself around slowly, she set her good food firmly on the ice. The second she moved her bitten leg she winced. Oh yeah, this was gonna be a bitch and a half to deal with. At least it wasn’t scalpels. Anything but motherfucking scalpels, although Misaki was sure to gain a wariness of sharks and ice skating after this. Then again maybe just avoiding ever fighting on a frozen lake again would be enough. Even still, she set her other foot down and tested putting weight on it. No, nope, that was a huge mistake. The shooting pain that rocketed up her leg continued on and was made worse by the teeth still stuck in her wound. Misaki would have liked to keep quiet as not to worry Dion, but unfortunately a very shrill ‘agh!’ still escaped her and she became still as a statue, not daring to move other than to prop herself up on her elbows. Trying to downplay her injury as much as possible, the tiny Japanese girl let out a snicker and adopted a rather annoyed look on her face,
“Okay so maybe that isn’t the best idea, can’t blame a girl for trying.”
Now that they weren’t fighting a Kishin Egg in a whack-a-mole like fashion, the cold was starting to become a nuisance again. Rubbing her hands together, Misaki breathe into them but remained seated on the ice, not even trying to move with her leg how it was. Maybe if she was still for long enough the cold would numb the wounded flesh and it wouldn’t hurt to limp off the ice on her own, granted she’d probably slip and fall in a puddle of her own blood along the way. Okay so maybe waiting for a stretched was a better idea. Regardless of when or how she got treated, the tiny Japanese girl was satisfied. She and Dion and had defeated a Kishin Egg, Dion would get his soul, and Inari could stop worrying about doppelgangers being creepers and watching them sleep enough. By her standards, it had been a good day.

In the final moments Dion had to agree with his meister’s thoughts, the kishin trying so desperately to escape was overall just pathetic. The situation was stacked so far against it there was really no point in fighting the inevitable. He would impale the monster, take its soul, and that would be the end of it. Watching it squirm futilely was annoying and Dion only wished Misaki could take this thing out faster. As the blow finally came Dion was content as his weapon form pierced through the monstrosity and he heard the crunching that came with it. At last an end to this thing’s twisted existence.
Piercing through the corpse of the monster Dion felt himself plunge through the ice and just barely reach the frigid waters below, maybe entering his extended form wasn’t such a good idea because even as a weapon that was fucking cold. Thankfully Misaki didn’t hesitate too long to pull him out but she sat him on the ice after. Not wanting to spend any more time on the ice than he had to Dion transformed back as the cold started to creep down his body, the consequences of having a metal weapon form. In human form again he made sure to stay on his feet to prevent the cold from spreading any more along his body.
Applause was not something he would have expected but he wasn’t going to object to the praise. Turning to see the gathered crowd he flipped his hair and gave a slight wave before turning back to check out the kishin and his meister. The corpse hadn’t moved so at least that was probably dead and all that was left was to make the soul his. Misaki had seen better days for sure but she was far from in a horrible state. At the emergence of the kishin egg Misaki spoke and Dion listened to her.
A job well done? Well if they were to get technical he guessed she was correct. They had taken care of things in a rather efficient manner but Dion didn’t feel that satisfied with it. Sure the kishin was dead but it seemed so easy. Sure it was only a one star mission but Yersinia had felt more difficult than this. Maybe it was because the doctor had caught them off guard that he had surprised them while the two were really kishin killing machines. Either way he walked over to the soul hesitantly stepping on the ice.
”I guess. Seemed kinda easy compared to last time and we didn’t get to try out our resonance. Oh well, just have to use it next time.”
Grabbing the soul Dion looked at it for a moment before moving his fist near it. He had learned from class that eating souls was a crude way to absorb them and usually not employed by many weapons. In truth eating them wasn’t the most appetizing thing so Dion figured there had to be a better way to do it. Entering his partial form he brought the spear tip closer to the soul and watched for something to happen. Once the tip touched the soul he added a little bit of pressure and the soul seemed to puncture, the red of the soul covering his partial form and vanishing. Deactivating his partial Dion could feel the energy of the soul enter him. Alright, he could work with that.
Done collecting his soul Dion faced his meister to see her attempting to walk. If she could this would be a lot easier for everyone but Dion wasn’t holding his breath. Leaving her to try he moved closer in case she did manage to stand and lose her balance. She never got that far but Dion still got next to her to see how well she could do. He winced as she let out a noise from the pain and shook his head before she gave up trying. Misaki had made a valiant effort in trying but it looked like walking wasn’t exactly an option for her at the moment.
”Good attempt but let’s get you off the ice at least before you become a Misakicicle.”
Bending down he scooped up his meister and tried to hold her in a way that wouldn’t get too much of her blood on him. Standing up he entered his partial form as soon as he was upright. The spear tips breaking through his shoes but piercing into the ice enough to stop him from slipping. With the extra weight he couldn’t trust his footing as much and didn’t want to slip on the ice while carrying his injured meister. Feeling that he was balanced and set enough he headed out toward the crowd of people and land so they could get off this fucking ice.

Aside from the hushed whisperings from the crowd and the words exchanged between team members, all was fairly silent. Inari seemed calm, serene even, a weight having been lifted off everyone’s shoulders. The doppelganger was dead. It could no longer torment them and it would never again drag one of their own to a watery grave beneath the ice. The corpse of the thing grew cold, remaining still and silent as her dead eyes stared straight ahead across to the darkened woods. Her bleeding had stopped with her heartbeat, the pool of blood beneath her congealing and becoming more like red jelly, probably to be rinsed off the ice and into the water. Tuuli had her hands clasped over her mouth now; having left Virva to her own devices once the dark haired girl had assured her that she would be fine. Now that her pursuer was dead, there was no need to worry. She would not die, at least not by the hands of a Kishin Egg. Still, her earlier realization rocked her completely. Hilja. Hilja. How had she not seen it? She felt like such a fool. Of course if she hadn’t seen the thing in person and only in drawings of her patients’ then that made sense. Still, Tuuli felt awful. But then on the other hand she didn’t. After all, that creature Dion and Misaki had killed was not, in a sense, Hilja. It was Hilja, but not anymore. It wasn’t anything anymore of course, being dead, but that was beside the point. She’d had the opportunity to help her and she had tried her best, but it had very clearly not been enough. She’d tried so hard, but in the end it didn’t even matter. Tuuli wondered if that was why she’d never seen it standing at her window, stalking her rather than someone else. She’d tried to help, not hinder, and now that she thought about it all of her victims seemed to fit a pattern, make sense. But that wasn’t important anymore. Testing her footing on the ice, Tuuli expertly made her way to the team without slipping or sliding once. She’d grown up on the lake, though, so walking on ice was nearly second nature. Hurrying over, she hadn’t realized just how badly the girl was injured. She knew that at least some of the blood on the ice had to be hers, they’d all seen her get bit after all, but it looked far more serious once she got close. Adopting an expression of pure worry as she got a closer look at Misaki’s injured leg, the therapist turned to yell to the crowd, or rather to specific people in it, “Mene hakemaan lääkäri! Tämä tyttö tarvitsee välitöntä lääkärinhoitoa!”((Go and get the doctor! This girl needs immediate medical attention!)) Three of the town’s residents nodded and headed off towards the more populated area of town. Another two who were the town’s only EMTs had also gathered in the crowd and rushed forward to see if they could help in any way, mainly in getting Misaki off the ice as son as possible and also making sure Dion wasn’t any worse for wear. The rest that had gathered slowly dispersed as well. It was over. MISSION COMPLETE Congratulations! Spoils: 1 Kishin Egg Soul, 100 Points Drawbacks: Misaki during their next mission will at the very least be sporting a limp and have reduced speed from her leg injury.
