Virva had spotted the two teens that entered the shop immediately, eyeing them with the same amount of suspicion that any other from Inari would have. Outsiders weren’t strange, but they still weren’t frequent. She gave them a smile and a nod anyway, even if it was only halfhearted. Her gaze was really on the windows and the door, watching for her own image to appear. It had followed her to work before, she’d seen it. Virva was almost eager fo rut to drag her to the ice and force her head under the water. Then at least all this madness would end.
Speaking of madness, there was indeed a corrupted soul within the café. It was not Virva, though. Positioned slightly to her right trying to get the steamer to work was Oskar, eyeing the students with a far more knowing gaze. He had every right to, or rather it did. It had only copied the young blonde man to check up on its latest pick. It had grown impatient recently. What better way to speed up the process then by knocking one of Virva’s coworkers unconscious and stealing their body? Its intentions had been to scare the living daylights out of her, but it appeared that would have to wait. Knowing it needed to get the jump on them, Oskar’s double glanced briefly at Virva before backing slowly away from the counter and disappearing into the back room, ducking out the back door shortly after. It had a plan, it always had a plan, but it would need to be quick.
Misaki’s Soul Perception would indeed pick up madness. Virva’s own soul of bright blue would cause no alarm, but the unmistakable red glow that passed behind it would certainly draw the team’s attention. In the meantime, Virva did turn to see where Oskar was going. She was at her wits end, but she was still aware of her surroundings,
“Oskar? Minne olet menossa?” ((Where are you going?))
When she didn’t receive an answer she started to follow him but then turned back to look at the two teens that had entered the shop. The other two baristas were still outside scraping ice and shoveling snow. She needed to stay put in case they ordered something. Sighing and adopted a rather worried expression, she leaned back against the counter and looked at the two from over her shoulder. If Oskar wanted to get into trouble, that was his business. She wasn’t in the mood for such things at the moment. She wasn’t in the mood for anything except maybe the sleep that eluded her now.
Just outside the back door, it was pacing tracks in the snow. It had a plan, but the others were clouding its mind. Go this way, go that way, hide here, run there. It covered Oskar’s ears and whispered seemingly to the air in a harsh voice that was more female than male,
“Turpa kiinni! Turpa kiinni, me tiedämme mitä teemme, vaan luottaa meihin!” ((Shut up! Shut up, we know what we’re doing, just trust us!))
It hadn’t expected the voices. Every personality it took on, everybody it tried to steal had a mind of its own that lingered once they died. Why couldn’t they just leave it alone? All it wanted was to be left alone, to be happy, was that so hard to understand? It made a mistake, one little mistake! Shaking its head, the doppelganger turned its gaze down the small snow filled ally. It didn’t see anyone. It was now or never if this was going to work.

Dion’s theory was a good one and something Misaki hadn’t really thought of. To her, Kishin Eggs were despicable and evil creatures that had no mind of their own left as far as she was concerned. Of course she was being slowly proven wrong on that note. Yersinia had been very much in control of his own action sot be as cunning as he had turned out to be as much as she loathed to admit it. The idea of this being a relatively new Kishin Egg that was trying to get its old life back did seem possible, and it certainly would make the things like turning up at its victim’s jobs make sense. Misaki shook her head before taking a look around, Soul Perception still activated,
“That’s just downright sad. I don’t feel sorry for it or anything since they sorta made their choice and all, but it’s still kinda depressing to think about. Hopefully you’re right about the whole not too powerful thing. I’d like to get the fighting over with as quickly as possible, especially since hell’s frozen over outside.”
Red. There was red, but it wasn’t where she’d thought it would be. If anything, Misaki had expected the thing to have copied Virva just to make her life more difficult. This wasn’t the case though. Misaki blinked and switched off her Soul Perception, trying to be as unassuming as possible in whispering to her partner,
“We’ve got our Kishin Egg, but it’s not the girl. The blonde guy behind her is what we’re looking for.”
There were several ways to handle this, and Misaki didn’t know which would be best. They could jump the counter and try to surprise the guy, but that would cause a hell of a commotion. They had to do something, though, especially if it was after Virva right this second. Misaki turned her eyes back on it only to catch sight of the thing slip into the back room. Crap!
“What should we do? Try to lure it outside or risk causing a panic by rushing it?”
If they tried to lure it, that would end one of two ways in that it would either work or it would fail. They could either somehow get it to follow them outside, or it could smell the danger on the team and make a run for it like it currently seemed to plan on doing. Misaki couldn’t imagine rushing it would do much good either. For one it’d cause everyone to freak out, and if the thing decided to play possum in a human form that would makes things ten times worse. Oh don’t mind the spear wielding Japanese girl, he’s not human, we swear! Yeah, that’d go over real well.
Skeptical though she was, Misaki genuinely was at a loss. Inside, there wasn’t much they could do, but it wasn’t worth the risk of splitting up either. It had to have seen them, and she didn’t want to deal with it copying her appearance. She would be able to tell if it was Dion if it copied him with her Soul Perception, but she wasn’t so sure about how Dion would fare if it copied her. She had faith in her partner, of course, but he was, well, Dion.

Standing still and trying to absorb the warmth of the inside Dion was more than content staying where he was and waiting to see where the kishin showed up. He wouldn’t be able to tell where it was unless he spotted those fucked up eyes or teeth; no in this situation it was best to wait for Misaki to identify their target. In the mean time getting warm and ready to fight this monster was all he needed to do. Hearing Misaki express some sort of emotion to the kishin was unexpected but she followed by stating that she wasn’t saddened by it herself. That was good, the last thing he needed was his meister to have a change of heart.
”Sad or not it is what it is and the sooner we kill it the sooner we can go back to Death City. Damn, I never thought I’d be so excited to go to a desert.”
Seeing Misaki react to something Dion looked to see what it was she was looking at. So the kishin egg was around but not the Virva girl? So it was the blonde guy? Well if they knew what it looked like the only thing left to do was to go kill it. Though considering Misaki didn’t take off after the thing Dion was momentarily confused. If it was right here why wasn’t she going in to take care of it? As Misaki spoke her concerns Dion understood but wasn’t convinced. This was still their best shot at finding and ending the thing so now would be the time to rush it! Luring would be nice but considering the nature of the kishin it wasn’t the most likely option.
”We can’t lose this thing or else it might just change again and we’ll have to start all over.”
So in order to begin an encounter Dion left the comfort of his standing in one place and took off after the kishin. Making sure to vault over the counter for emphasis that he was doing something important. Getting separated from Misaki would suck and he didn’t want that to happen again but losing the kishin would make things more difficult. He was confident that Misaki could catch up to him quickly enough so that wasn’t the most pressing issue. Getting some looks Dion continued chasing the kishin but did yell out to make sure the people knew.
”Shibusen! Stay back!”
Dion wasn’t sure if any of the surrounding people even spoke English but he figured it was worth a try. Diverting his attention off of the people and believing Misaki would be right behind him Dion chased the kishin as it attempted to escape. This was his first time chasing after a kishin egg but Dion had every intention of catching up to the thing and with Misaki’s help ending the distorted existence it had. Plus that meant one more soul for him so it looked like a win win situation for all the parties involved.

While the team was still talking amongst themselves inside, it was beginning its transformation. It was a painful and gruesome process, one that it much preferred to do in seclusion but there was no time for privacy. Its bones broke and repaired themselves to fit a different stature while the skin of the young blonde man known as Oskar seemed to wither and hang off. Letting out low growls and barely audible winces of pain and discomfort, the doppelganger, pulled its former skin apart, flinging it to the side in a sagging heap. The blonde hair started to bristle and shed, falling out in tufts before the thing merely started grabbing handfuls of it and yanked its former scalp clean off with no more than a grimace to show its pain.
Inside, Virva was getting suspicious. Tapping her fingers in sequence against the counter, she hunched her shoulders and cast a glance behind her. Where was Oskar? The fact that he’d left so quickly had her worried, and the fact that the two teens spoke un hushed whispers doubled that worry to add to her already mountainous amount of anxiety. Maybe what was following her had stolen her coworker’s form. Or worse: there were actually two of those things running around and they were right in front of her, spying on her. Visibly shuddering at the thought, Virva turned from them and took to staring at the tiles on the floor beneath her feet. This wasn’t the time or the place to be paranoid, or so she thought. She was quickly proven wrong by green haired young man leaping over the counter to chase after Oskar.
Stuttering a bit, Virva made to scold him,
“Hei! Juuri sitä, mitä sin-“
“Shibusen! Stay back!”
Virva paused and took a step back. Shibusen. That was the place Tuuli had said she was going to call. She said that maybe they would be able to help with the situation. That changed things. Rather than scold, Virva went so far as to duck under the counter, drawing her knees in towards her chest. She didn’t know what was going to happen, but she would be more than happy to let the green haired boy and the Asian girl handle it. She was used to hiding by now after all.
When the students burst into the back room, they would find it empty. All that would greet them would be a few baking racks, some empty, some holding spare coffee cakes and such, as well as a simple stove and sink. Two heavy double doors off to the left side would lead to the fridge and freezer, but there was another door that was still a bit open by perhaps three inches. It let in soft gusts of r frigid air from outside, and the low hissing of the doppelganger could be heard alongside the dull popping of joints settling into place. The back door was the obvious escape route it had taken, and it was also obvious that the Kishin Egg was still present perhaps no more than ten feet from the door in the little alleyway.
One of many downsides it had was that the thing needed to change back into itself before adopting someone else’s persona. Throwing the remaining remnants of Oskar’s skin from its own, the doppelganger looked anything but human. Even so, it couldn’t be seen that well. It looked like some sort of alien life form that had just hatched, a rather thick layer of translucent mucus covering it from head to toe, having been needed only moments ago to secure its second skin to its true form. The main distinguishing features from the back were the hands and feet. The sharp claws were evident and the webbing between its fingers and toes suggested it was more adapted for water than land.
Knowing it was running out of time, the doppelganger was rushed. Its arms broke first, elbows an shoulder popper out of place, urging low groans of pain from its throat. Its skin began to pale and its hair began to darken, growing slightly longer. Where clothes would be copied, its skin changed to match the color and consistency of the fabric. Half turned, it would have to run if it was caught, but that had been part of its initial plan anyway.

Misaki chuckled a bit at her Weapon. She definitely knew the feeling. Misaki didn’t do so well in any sort of extreme temperature, but this was just ridiculous. She preferred cooler climates, but ice hell was not on her list of places she wanted to live so Inari was definitely somewhere she’d like to leave as quick as possible and put to memory,
“I hear you. Hell, the Kalahari sounds like heaven right about now.”
Dion was right. If they lingered then commotion or not, they’d lose the doppelganger and it would copy someone else and then they’d have to search for it all over again. Misaki didn’t fancy trudging around in the snow questioning everyone living in and around the surrounding area of the icepocalypse, so they were gonna have to do something and do it fast. Following Dion’s lead, the tiny Japanese girl wasn’t far behind him. Getting a leg up, she jumped clear over the counter and winked at Virva in doing so,
“Don’t mind us; we’ll be out of your hair right after we take care of that nasty monster!”
At least the girl had the good sense to hide. Misaki doubted she’d need to since the Kishin Egg had already apparently ducked outside, but she supposed it was better to be safe than sorry. Moving into the back room, nothing was immediately apparent. She doubted it was hiding behind the heavy double doors of the freezer. That would be stupid and all that would do was turn it into a popsicle, although that would definitely help her and Dion kill the thing. They could just smash it into pieces if it was frozen! She doubted they should be so lucky, though. Just to be doubly sure, though, the tiny Japanese girl did hurry open and open the doors. Nope, she was right. No Kishin Eggs hiding in amongst the milk and eggs. That’d just be silly.
It was plainly obvious that the Kishin Egg wasn’t in the back room. A cold breeze made the tiny Japanese girl shiver and shove her hands back in her pockets. Where the hell was that coming from? Not the freezer, she’d closed the doors already. Turning around, she spied the open back door. Shortly after spotting it, she also heard a low hiss. Looking to her Weapon, Misaki whispered,
“Dion, stay close. I think it’s right outside.”
Tip-toeing over to the door, Misaki took a breath and then Sparta kicked it open. Dashing out into the cold, the sight that met her eyes was definitely a Kishin Egg. Well, this was certainly a switch from a crazed doctor. Especially the slime part. Unable to not pull a face of at least mild disgust, Misaki shook her head,
“Okay, that’s just downright nasty.”
Even worse was it appeared to still be changing. Then again to be fair that could be seen as fortuitous for her and Dion. They’d caught it with its back turned and everything! However judging by the hair, she suspected that I had intended to either switch to Virva or worse, herself, before causing more trouble. It was definitely good that they’d chased after it, then. Holding out her hand to her Weapon, a wicked grin spread over Misaki’s face,
“Hey there, slimy. Do us a favor and stand real still for a moment.”

Finding the backroom of the shop to be empty was unsettling. Dion had seen too many movies to be complacent at the target’s disappearance. Looking up he checked the ceiling for any signs of the kishin. Nothing, well at least that thing wasn’t getting the drop on them from above. Relieved the target wasn’t about to use his own pastime against him Dion relaxed and looked around. The freezer would have been his next location to search had the open door not been such a glaring sign. Really now, everyone knew the freezer was a better bet for trapping people! This kishin was either completely stupid or really lame.
At Misaki’s words he stood next to her in preparation. No getting separated and frantic running through painful shit this time! Following as they walked toward the door Dion was ready to move when his meister kicked open the door. Rushing out with her he braced the cold in anticipation of whatever the kishin was going to do. He expected there to be like some crazed chef with a meat cleaver or something standing in the frozen fuckland and ready to fight them. Reality wasn’t nearly as awesome and was a bit more disgusting.
”Nasty is a bit of an understatement.”
Certainly one of the more inhuman kishin eggs but not terribly scary. It still had a somewhat human shape so it was probably still bound by human limits. This was a good thing as far as the mission went but not that exciting as far as the fighting would go. Yersinia was more surprising than challenging so this should be easy unless the kishin had some hidden skills. Assuming his prediction was correct Dion wasn’t scared at all and was more than ready to get this started!
”I’m going to need to shower with like bleach after this. Now don’t make this too quick, I want to enjoy this~”
Smirking at the kishin Dion extended his hand toward Misaki’s and was consumed by green light. Transforming into his three foot weapon form he landed in her hand as his consciousness withdrew to the warmer darkness of his soul. Looking out at the kishin and the frozen wasteland around them. The ice was an interesting touch compared to the muddy trudge that was their last mission. All in all Dion was ready for this and couldn’t wait to see how this turned out.

Half turned was not a way to greet the team that hunted it. Whirling around, the thin stared right through them. Its head was clouded with noise, the yelling was so loud. It needed to flee, but how, where. The girl was armed already. That spear was meant to rob the doppelganger of whatever it had left to call a life. It snarled, backing slowly away a ways, its feet dragging in the snow. Should it run? Could it run? It must run, or it would die, they would all die. They were screaming at it now. Half of its face resembling that of Misaki’s while the other was totally hidden from view by the mucus, it suddenly hissed and covered its ears, “Hiljaa, hiljaa! Jätä meidät rauhaan!”((Shut up, shut up! Leave us alone!)) Its voice was split in two, one deep and ragged, the other sounding all too human and plainly female. Staggering backwards, it again looked to the team. Running was the only option. It needed to skip ahead and lure them in early. It snarled at them, its mouth appear far too wide and full of row upon row of serrated teeth, “Jätä meidät rauhaan!”((Leave us alone!)) The doppelganger could indeed run. The mad soul turned and fled out of the alleyway and into the street. The lake, the lake, it needed to get to the lake. It needed to reach the water at any cost. The water its friend, its home, its only remaining ally. Those two were sick, a couple of monsters that would rejoice in its death. The doppelganger did not want to die. Its feet left barely any imprints in the snow, but the globs of mucus that dropped from its skin as it ran left a definitive trail. The team would also follow the horrified gasps and screams from the townspeople. A doppelganger running down the sidewalk wasn’t exactly something they saw every day. It was quick, but it needed to pause. Its body still wanted to change, to turn into the Meister girl. It tried to copy her appearance. The doppelganger paused and let out a shriek only to hurl itself forward further towards the frozen lake. It grabbed a hold of its face and tore off the half that was not its own, throwing away the discarded half visage on the sidewalk. It could not stop, it had to keep going, but it had to stop the change. It would not run if its legs were broken. Its gait was already off centered, its back hunched as the doppelganger’s spine twisted and cracked trying to change stature. No, no, no! It was so close, it was almost there! The water would not obey its command, but the ice? The ice yielded to its every whim. Broken arms thrown out towards the lake’s edge, the doppelganger rushed past fishermen and took out one of the dockworkers before diving forward head first. The ice yielded and melted away to allow space for it to hit the water. A rush of cold more frigid than the winter air surrounded it. The feeling as familiar, comforting. The lake would cradle it for a time. It would remain her for just a little while, but it knew it could not stay. It would have to resurface. It would have to fight them.

Misaki chuckled at Dion’s comment about the bleach but couldn’t help but agree. Plus there was the thought that maybe that slime the thing was covered in was some kinda defense mechanism. It could be corrosive for all they knew, but there was only one way to find out. Feeling Dion’s spear form fall into her hand, she whirled it over her head before taking a fighting stance,
“But of course, Dion. I can’t make it too easy, or that’d take all the fun out of it!”
They would kick this slimy critter’s ass regardless. Still, Misaki was ready for whatever it had to throw at them, although she hoped with all her might that this thing wasn’t some kind of scalpel shooting amphibian. That didn’t seem likely from where she stood looking at it, but then all she really saw now was a bunch of slime and awkwardly colored skin. When it turned it did give a snarl, but he tiny Japanese girl didn’t budge. Expecting an attack, she was surprised when it proceeded to do next to nothing. Moreover it spoke, talking to itself. Raising an eyebrow, Misaki lowered the spear but only slightly. She fully intended to strike at the thing, but this was just plain strange,
“Dion, are you seeing this? I think we may be doing this thing a favor. That doctor was a piece of work to be sure, but this thing’s just plain nuts.”
As it staggered backwards, Misaki advanced slowly forwards. She took slow, calculated steps; ready to leap back any second should try to lunge for her. It did none of those things though. She didn’t know what it was saying, but it sounded pissed. Those teeth she caught a glimpse of would be troublesome, and she mad a note in the back of her mind to avoid getting bit by this thing. That would be ten kinds of nasty and a major pain in the ass. With that many teeth, one bite could injure her enough that they may need to stop the hunt, and that was not an option in her mind. They would kill this thing; she’d make sure of that.
Seeing a chance and taking it, Misaki made her first move. Shifting her weight, she spun completely around and swung the spear with the pointed end aimed for the side of the creature’s head. Misaki barely missed it and grimaced as it turned and ran,
“Oi! Get your slimy ass back here!”
The tiny Japanese girl took off after it. The snow made it tougher to run, but she was still quick enough to keep it in her sights. Even if she lost it, the thing was dropping globs of slime from its skin that marked its path quite nicely. Even if she lost sight of it, there would still be an evident trail to follow. Ignoring the frigid air hitting her in the face as best she could, she held Dion tucked under her arm at her side as she ran after the thing. She was only thankful that anybody who saw it had the good sense to get the fuck out of the way. That meant she wouldn’t need to be dodging and weaving around any idiots who decided to stop in the middle of the sidewalks to stare at the strange creature running.
As the thing paused, Misaki gripped the Demon Spear with both hands and swung at it again, careful to avoid any bystanders. It was off and running again in an instant, she didn’t even come close to hitting it that time. Letting out a frustrated growl, she kept after it. The thing was quick though. She took two steps, it took four, and the snow definitely wasn’t helping with that. She followed it out to the docks and watched it dive into what looked to her like solid ice. Reaching the end, though, she saw the hole in the white expanse and sighed. Great. That just made things five times more difficult. Looking out at the lake, it was a pretty good area they would have to cover looking for the thing. Turning to look over her shoulder, Misaki was entirely serious,
“Get everyone away from the water’s edge and keep them away! It isn’t safe.”
Granted all the water was frozen and it could be hiding anywhere, but she was not going to have some civilian get hurt or dragged under, however unlikely it was. Grimacing, Misaki took a deep breath and hopped down onto the ice, remaining still and crouched for a moment before standing up to her full height. Before stepping forward, she tapped one foot over the top of the ice. It all seemed sturdy enough to stand on, but it was still risky. Unfortunately, it looked like they didn’t have any other choice but to fight it on its home turf. Taking slow steps and listening for even the slightest cracking sound come from beneath her, Misaki made her way forward over the ice,
“Well, this is going to be a total pain in the ass.”

What was with kishin and being huge fucking cowards? Like really, at least Yersinia was a tricky son of a bitch and played an innocent for a while. Hell, he was more conniving if anything. The doctor had used strategy to make his victory more likely, it was useless but he tried. This monster wasn’t even trying to fight them, it was running away! Was it so much to ask for a kishin to just stand and fight them instead of clinging to their pathetic existence that barely resembled a life? All he wanted was to take the soul and return to the nice heat of Nevada.
It was quick and had the terrain advantage meaning they had no choice but to follow it. Tracking the thing wasn’t difficult considering the globs of flesh it left where it had run. Heading toward the town and the people did scare Dion momentarily. It could have used the people as hostages or killed them for being in its way. Luckily that wasn’t the case so the team wouldn’t have to account for another civilian death while they were on a mission, even if it wasn’t their fault. His theory at least was looking more possible with how it acted.
Misaki’ s comments were a bit off from what Dion could see but it didn’t really matter. He didn’t care about why the kishin was running away or anything like that. It had treaded down the path of madness and was no longer human, therefore Dion didn’t have any need to regard it with human sympathy. Remaining quiet for a while he contemplated the situation from the wonderful not frozenness of his soul. His face showing up on the handle portion of the spear Dion looked around before stopping on Misaki.
”Not exactly. If it was completely mad it would have attacked us like some crazy monster. This thing is attempting to live by not fighting us, a smart move in theory but not so much in execution. Just means we have to kill it before it gets stronger and isn’t a total wimp.”
Misaki went for a pretty good attack but the kishin managed to avoid the strike. Dion was unpleased that it avoided the hit but somewhat glad he didn’t make contact with that thing. If he was going to have to touch the kishin he would have preferred it be once, and that strike impaling the fucker and it dying.
During the chase Dion waited and watched their target for any obvious weaknesses. Besides being a total bitch he didn’t see any glaring weak spots that could be made use of. Considering the humanlike form it had he assumed a spear through the head or heart would do just fine as far as killing the thing went. This was just a guess though and with how it changed bodies he honestly wasn’t certain if even that would work. Misaki tried again but to no avail. This thing was certainly annoying if nothing else.
Fuck. Fuck fucking fuck! The kishin wasn’t just running away, it was leading them. That made things different and possibly a bit of fun. They were in what he assumed was the creature’s home turf and they didn’t know what it would do next. From what Dion saw there were two options for the kishin to take, run or fight. It had already started running but now it had the advantage in area, though it would only prolong the inevitable because they weren’t leaving it alone. Fighting would be more fun and it would have the advantage. This was much more what he wanted.
Misaki’s comment was certainly true but Dion was excited now. This was what he wanted, this was the challenge he longed for. Alright maybe he wanted something more epic in general but as far as this kishin a battle on the ice was the best he was probably going to get. Focusing his attention to the surrounding area his face appeared on the spear and looked around.
”Let’s see what this thing can do. Be careful though, we can’t let up now that we’re here on its terrain. Hopefully it attacks us and we can get a quick spinning spear stab to the face and end this. If not there is always…”
Dion’s voice trailed off before saying it. This was too early for them to contemplate using resonance. Why bother using their trump card so early for this weak looking kishin. Plus there was the fact that if they didn’t kill it the drawbacks would leave them utterly helpless against the thing. Now they should rely on simple strategy and see what happened. In preparation Dion remained as his three foot form and waited what would happen. Assuming this thing was capable of rational thought they could trick it into underestimating his length and catch it by surprise with an extended stab to the face!

Cold was all she felt. The frigid waters of the lake surrounded her, easing her rapid and frightened thoughts if only for a moment. She was safe her, or so she would have liked to believe. Now that those two had found her, it was do or die. She would need to kill them and flee elsewhere or die trying. Either way, she would not let them get away unscathed. They’d ruined her plan and for that they must pay. Beneath the ice, the mad soul drifted in the dark blue of the water, gazing blankly up at the great expanse of illuminated white above her. She could see the girl, or her shadow at the very least. As the Kishin Egg floated in the water, the mucus that had served as an adhesive for her second skin dissolved and sloughed off. No longer needed, it was discarded, disintegrated into the freezing water. They were screaming at her again from the back of her mind ever since she hit the water. Eyes slamming shut, the creature covered her ears and twisted around, tyring to rid herself of the voices. We cannot breathe, they shouted, we need air, they screamed. If she could tear their personas straight out of her head, she would have. Already her claws dug into her temples, but thankfully their whining ceased and peace came over her only to be shattered in the next second. The girl was moving, her footsteps making the ice shudder and creak although it was too thick to break. It was a thundering sound to be heard from underwater, chilling her as the water no longer seemed able to. No, her skin was too thick for the freezing temperatures to harm her much. That spear, on the other hand… Opening her eyes, the mad soul held the same blank expression. It was time. Three swift kicks with her webbed feet propelled her upwards, the ice melting away around her and allowing her to surface. As she appeared, the white reformed itself around and beneath her, lifting her out of the water and onto solid ice where she stood sizing up the team for a second time. Her appearance was clearer now, the water having washed away any remnants of her failed transformation. Silver eyes that glinted in the sun held narrow, slit pupils. Grey skin with the same apparent texture as that of a shark’s kept her from feeling the cold’s full effect, fading to white along her stomach, hands and feet as well as just beneath her chin and along her neck. Her hair clung to her neck and the sides of her face, a wet mess of black. The fishermen and any others that had been anywhere on or around the docks had fled inside, a few watching from the windows for a few moments before ducking their heads out of view. The Kishin Egg planted her feet firmly in the ice and raised both hands above her head. Bearing her teeth, she let out a low his before bring her hands down, the ice following her movements and shooting out as icicles towards the team. She would defeat them. She had to. The icicles were a means of distraction. She needed them on their feet and moving. This was her domain and they were not welcome here. She would make them slip up, she would drag them into the water, drown them like all the others. They would feel her pain like every other drowned soul had, souls that now belonged to her and gave her this glorious strength. With the projectiles dispatched, she anticipated their need to either dodge or deflect and skated a wide circle around the team, coming up from behind and lunging at the dark haired girl with her claws aiming right at the side of her throat.

Misaki nodded at her Weapon’s words. Dion was right, this was the Kishin Egg’s home turf and they weren’t entirely sure what it was capable of aside from copying people’s appearances. To be hiding under the water had to mean it was amphibious in nature since it hadn’t surfaced for air yet. With that in mind, Misaki clicked her tongue and gazed out at the expanse of the lake. This was not a small body of water they were dealing with, and the creature could be anywhere just chilling out beneath them. What a fucking nuisance. Their resonance was tempting, but she wouldn’t want to use it right away. If anything, she’d rather save it for a finishing more or a last resort if it came to that, which she doubted it would. Still, she held the spear in a defensive stance, ready to block or dodge at a moment’s notice,
“I’d save the light show to finish this thing off, honestly, especially since the drawbacks are sure to fuck us over if we don’t make contact with it somehow.”
Slowly, carefully, Misaki advanced. The tiny Japanese girl paused after every step, watching the surrounding ice like a hawk for the slightest sign of cracking. She listened for shifts as well, any loud pops or shudders from all of the white that surrounded them that would let her know they were about to fall into the freezing water. Being stuck out in ice hell was bad enough. If she hit the water, Misaki knew it wouldn’t be good. In temperatures that were this low, shock and hypothermia would set in almost instantly and then they’d be sitting ducks. No, she could not let herself get caught or dragged into the water.
When she did hear the ice shifting, she stopped dead in her tracks. Fortunately it wasn’t the ice beneath them that was changing. From under the water, the Kishin Egg rose up to meet them. If it was still afraid of them, Misaki couldn’t see it. At least all the slime was gone. She’d honestly felt a bit sorry for Dion earlier, but now at least there wouldn’t be any disgusting transformation goo sticking to his spear form after the fight was over. Misaki let a small smirk spread across her face as she pivoted and took a more offensive stance on the ice,
“Well, well, well, don’t you clean up nice?”
It could control the ice, that much was obvious. It had lifted the creature out of the water, so obviously that was her medium, and it made Misaki all the more nervous. If this thing wanted too, it could just melt the ice right out from under them. Suddenly becoming hyper aware of wear her feet were, she stared the thing down as it sized them up. As it raised its hands and hissed, Misaki snickered and propelled herself forward, letting herself skid a bit with each step to try and advance on the thing as quickly as possible.
Oh shit, those were icicles! Raising the Demon Spear in her hands, she knocked them to the side with ease. Did the creature think this was a fucking game? Misaki certainly thought it appeared that way until she saw it was on the move again and coming towards her much faster than she had anticipated. Ducking out of the way of the thing’s claws with time enough that they barely scratched her neck, Misaki crouched and stabbed at the mad soul’s ribcage, doing her best not to slide around too much as she did so. It could shoot icicles and but it was trying to tear her to shreds? What the hell kind of strategy was this thing going for? Then again if it drowned its victims, it made sense. Trying to knock her down and then get its hands on her to shove her head under the ice, probably. Well, Misaki certainly wasn’t about to let that happen.

Scanning the surface of the lake himself Dion listened to the words of his meister. She was right, there was no need to use the resonance they had obtained unless they needed to. The drain from that would be enough to disable them temporarily and if they didn’t finish the thing off with it they would be royally fucked. Alright save the resonance for a trump card if things got more dangerous than they thought. Now Dion needed only to wait for this thing to show itself and attack them. Misaki was trying to find it but with the kishin under the sheet of ice they didn’t have the best chance of success.
Eventually the target showed up and they could start the fun. Dion was glad the water had cleaned the thing a bit so he wouldn’t feel as disgusting after killing it. Misaki was on it and got ready to attack in response. Dion watched intently to see what the creature would do now that it had to fight them. It seemed hesitant but that wasn’t anything surprising, it was facing death and was attempting to put up a fight. While it looked like it was doing some odd dance Dion waited to see it attack.
There it was. Icicles! Annoying that it had any projectiles on it but not the worst. It seemed like even though the kishin could control some ice it didn’t have complete control, if that was the case they would be underwater now. It seemed that this also meant it couldn’t control the icicles more than creating them and sending them on their course. Unfortunately for the kishin they had already dealt with worse projectiles and this time Dion wasn’t going to be a human pin cushion. Misaki was already headed toward it before the icicles were sent at them and she didn’t seem to have any intention of stopping.
Boom, knocked right out of the air without a second thought! Of course Misaki would be having none of this projectile shit after Yersinia. Dion was disoriented a bit after the swing but once he had a clear view again he couldn’t help but smirk. It had finally gotten serious enough to go for a close range attack! Smart enough to not go for a straight assault but still coming at them for melee and that was all Dion needed to fuck shit up!
Misaki was on it and dodged the attack but did get a knick from the claw of the kishin. The first hit was on the kishin’s side and Dion certainly couldn’t have that when it was his meister. He was hoping to catch the thing off guard but now was as good a time as any to get a major hit in. Misaki extended to go for a stab at the ribcage and Dion was going to help. In the motions of the stab he extended into his six foot form to give his meister the extra reach and hopefully have the kishin underestimate the distance and receive a stab to the ribs.
After the initial stab Dion reverted to his three foot form. His plan was to confuse the kishin about the length of his weapon form and the reach of his meister. Any little bit of confusion he could harvest was better for them and with some luck it would slip up and get a spear in the face. Even better if Misaki caught on to his idea she could come up with a probably better plan to take the kishin down. Then they could leave this fucking cold.

She had expected them to take care of the icicles quickly. If they’d been meant as her main attack she’d have made them thicker, heavier. No matter she could think on that soon. Perhaps spurs or spikes from below next. No, that wouldn’t do, too simple but also complicated. She could command the ice, but that did not mean that it would choose to obey. It could be picky, and the other screaming within her head and clawing at her mental walls were distracting her still. Help us, they wailed, help us, save us!
She felt her claws barely graze the Meister’s skin. She could smell her blood the instant the small wound opened. It may only be a scratch, but it was a start. The mad soul intended to spill the rest of their blood by the end, paint the ice with it before running somewhere new. With their faces, she could go anywhere. No one would be the wiser, she could still get out of this. It would take some creativity and persistence on her part, but escape was still an option.
The Meister crouched, jabbing at her with that damned spear aimed right at her ribs. The Kishin Egg twisted around, thinking to avoid it simply but maintain that close proximity only to still feel the sting of sharp metal raking across her skin. A shrill cry left her and she skidded backwards, webbed hands pressed firmly over the wound. What the hell was that? She’d dodged that attack; she knew she’d dodged it! There was no way that spear could’ve still hit her! Glaring at the team, her eyes narrowing. No, there was no way that spear could’ve hit her, not with that compact length. She would not be so careless again regardless. Allowing the cold to numb her pain, her hands left her injured side.
The team would see their handiwork. A long gash split open the Kishin Egg’s pale grey flesh, her blood running steadily down to the ice and staining it red. More furious than scared now, she grew deadly serious. Murder was in her eyes and fire was in her blood. They would pay for that. Circling them again, she paused only to extend her hands out to the side. The ice rose to meet her palms in jagged spikes. She spun, halting with her arms reaching out towards the team. The frozen spikes broke free and rocketed towards them, four great icicles at least a foot in length each and sharp like razors.
From behind the barrage of ice, she advanced. She did not bother trying to be sneaky again, they’d see it coming. Skating head on towards the Meister girl, she again held her claws in a movement to jab at her chest. She wasn’t playing around, she wanted blood. Their souls would of course be an added bonus, as would their skins. Whether the Meister dodged or was hit, the mad soul kept at her and made to strike with her other hand as well, sharp claws going for her eyes this time. But her one side was wounded, and so her second attack faltered. It was weaker and whether it made contact or not, she backed off immediately quite a ways. She could not afford to be careless.
However there was one advantage to take into account. Her blood on the ice would in fact make it slicker. The team would not be able to move as easily as she did on the frozen lake. She was built to skid over the ice while they were not. She was of course slowed by the gash, but the cold numbed it some. The pain was dulled to an annoying twinge lest she strike out at them. She had other plans, though, plans that would either allow her escape or land her in dark red water.

Misaki had been half expecting Dion to do something like that. The smirk on her face turned into a full on grin at the sight of blood. Alright, they got it! Now all they had to do was keep at it until there was blood everywhere and a soul floating over a corpse for Dion. Then they could leave this cold behind. Misaki fully intended to huddle under every single blanket they owned once home, but that would have to wait until later. Thoughts of future warmth aside, it was quite obvious the thing was confused. Good. If it didn’t know just how they’d managed to strike it, then that only meant they had the advantage.
Even better was the look on the thing’s face. She was very clearly displeased with them for having hurt her. Misaki stood from her crouching position and spun the spear over her head before bringing him back down. A little flare never hurt, especially if it had the chance to frighten what appeared to be a very frantic Kishin Egg. Misaki very slowly turned on the ice, following the mad soul as she skated around them once more. It was a bit slower, she noticed, probably due the wound. A streak of red followed the thing, contrasting sharply with the white of the ice.
Misaki couldn’t even feel the slight scratch at the side of her throat. The cold had number it quickly, not to mention the thing’s claws had only barely managed to break the skin. She was bleeding, but nowhere near bad enough to cause an panic. Ugh, again with the icicles? Misaki rolled her and planted her feet as best she could to the ice, holding the Demon Spear out in front of her. Whatever this ice bitch threw at her, she was ready for it.
Oh, well, those were certainly icicles. Really big fucking icicles at that. Misaki switched how she had her feet positioned so that when she blocked them she’d slide instead of being completely knocked backwards. Falling down was really not in her best interest at the moment. She’d spent enough time on the ground bleeding in their last mission, she did not plan to do so a second time. At least there wasn’t any danger of being covered in mud here.
Four, okay she could handle this. The tiny Japanese girl also noted that the Kishin Egg wasn’t lurking around to the side like last time, oh no, she was headed straight towards them along with her projectiles. Misaki Knocked the first of the icicles to the side, causing it to snap in two before it clattered to the frozen lake. The second she narrowly avoided, hearing it whizz past her head as she ducked out of the way. With the third and fourth nearly upon her, Misaki held the spear out in front of her and spun it. The icicles hi the spear and shattered, sending a spray of ice out around them, and then the Kishin Egg was right in front of her.
This thing was definitely not playing games anymore as she went right for Misaki’s chest. Skidding a bit and damn near losing her balance, the tiny Japanese girl managed to lean back and then turn her body so that she didn’t end up with her torso torn open. Raising her arms, she tried to bring the spear down on the thing’s arm, but it’d shifted its position. Misaki saw claws only inches from her eyes and reacted in kind. She raised he spear and caught it on the Kishin Egg’s shoulder. Shifting her body weight, she ducked away from the claws trying to blind her and propelled the thing forward by pressing the weapon at the back of her neck.
Not wanting to give the Kishin Egg a single opening to turn around and take another stab at her, Misaki changed her hold on the spear. With both hands clasped around one end of her weapon, she put all of her strength into bringing it down, hopefully, right on top of the thing’s head. A good knock to the head could potentially stun it for long enough that they could just then stab it through the chest. Either way, this bitch really wasn’t bleeding enough yet for Misaki to be satisfied.

It was no surprise but Dion was awesome and worked in perfect conjunction with Misaki. Her initial jab was easy enough to dodge but not so much when he suddenly extended out a few feet. Right on target he managed to at least graze the kishin enough to draw blood. Even if the wound wasn’t the most serious it still did a good job. Now it was confused about him and more likely to mess up. Sure it would be more cautious but the more it focused the more likely it was to miss something else and make a mistake.
Seeing the kishin head out Dion would have sighed if he was in human form. Was this thing still not giving up? They were clearly going to wreck it so why not just let them kill it and get this over with? Of course that wouldn’t be nearly as much fun so he would let it slide. More ice would have made Dion roll his eyes if the kishin didn’t change it up. Four larger shards of ice were a tad more intimidating but still nothing they couldn’t handle. Dion relaxed in the darkness of his weapon form and let Misaki take care of the projectiles.
One icicle knocked aside and snapped. Misaki dodged the second and dealt with the last two expertly. His weapon form shredded the ice like paper and from inside his weapon form the cold was almost nice, almost being the key word. Now just to deal with the kishin that was causing all of these problems in the first place. Misaki didn’t need his commentary at the moment and he didn’t have much to offer. She was doing fine as was, dodging the kishin’s attacks and sending back some of her own. All they needed was that crucial hit that would kill it.
Remaining silent and observing Dion watched the kishin and tried to figure out more about it. He didn’t sympathize or anything but he did keep an eye out for any potential weak spots he could let Misaki to exploit. So far nothing but he would keep looking for something.
