The Meister was too quick to be caught by teeth. The nightmare snorted and snarled as it had risen up in response, clearly displeased with just how quick the team was. Couldn’t they tell how hungry it was? Even so, they continued to manage to retreat from its attacks. As she moved it kept after her, progressing in short, stuttering movements just close enough to keep up the attempts of plowing bladed hooves through her feet. She couldn’t be quick if she couldn’t even walk, and then the nightmare could finally sink its teeth into her.
At the continued avoidance, it still persisted. Seeing the Meister pause made it draw closer, shaking its head and casting blue and glowing tracks in the hair where the flames licked through it. A single hoof planted itself in the earth not even a foot from the spear, the rest of its body hitching backwards as the nightmare saw her lift into the air. It made to rear, but by the time it did the Miester was already too high. A last ditch effort to snap at her foot and drag her down into the dirt was thwarted.
The Soul Purge connected between its left eye and jaw, pulsing through muscle and bone and rattling around inside of its skull. With her kicking off as a form of retreat, the great creature staggered. Its head lulled down, held at an angle with its jaw hanging open. In part it was dazed, vision swimming and steaming breath leaving in heavy puffs. On the other hand, the left side of its jaw was useless, disconnected and making it near impossible to even close its mouth. A smoking burn had singed a patch of black coat away, extending to on blue eye that still flamed but far less than the other.
Swaying, the nightmare lifted its head, lowered it, repeated the action. It caught its balance but moved recklessly; pawing and swinging its head around like it very much did not know where it was. Seeing double and going by scent alone, it found the team and fixated on them as best it could. There were two Meisters now, apparently twins, apparently both a little overconfident. It viewed the glow that appeared and the points that came into view and used them as a focus and checkpoint. Ramming both hooves against the earth for assured stability, it began to charge the team again.
Except the nightmare couldn’t even walk a straight line, much less run one. Its path was tilted, the creature running at them full tilt but in a zigzag. It’s head was lowered it only because it still struggled to keep it even somewhat aloft, still spinning and with the Meister’s additional wavelength being pesky and clinging to the inside of its skull, dulling its thoughts. All it managed were highly aggressive and shrill growls as it approached them, swinging its open mouth as soon as it was close enough. Even if it couldn’t bite, it would attempt to hook and pull.

Misaki felt like she was vibrating. The rush from pulling off such a ballsy move and seeing the after affect had her on cloud nine. She only grinned at Dion’s comment, rolling her eyes a bit, “Yeah I’ll get right on that, Mr. Miyagi.” She probably could to be fair. Misaki was more than capable of backflips, she just happened to be in no condition for them currently. Either way, she kept an eye on the currently dazed and slack-jawed demon pony before them. It looked like she’d bought just enough time for them to get the ball rolling. A very sharp, pointy, glowy ball of death and awesome.
With their resonance kicking into gear, Misaki’s smile grew wicked as it could be. Her eyes were trained on their enemy, but her focus was with Dion. She became hyperaware of his wavelength and her own, bouncing back and forth and back and forth and growing stronger and stronger with each repetition. She felt it gathering around her hands until their connection reached its boiling point and the power coursed through her like quicksilver. Oh, it had been way too long since they’d done this. Pulsing power and a teal glow further relieved her of all worry, the scraps that had remained fleeing from her mind once and for all. Misaki felt like flying, especially once the effects kicked in fully, rendering the discomfort from her injured leg nonexistent. Would it hurt later? Oh yes, but now she could run at full speed and not worry about falling.
The teal glow that enveloped the Demon Spear’s changing form was well timed. The half-assed Ponyta was at it again, waving its head around messily and planting its feet down again. Misaki had to bite her lip to keep from laughing. It was going to be way too fun cutting it down to size. Bouncing on her toes from one foot to the other like some sort of idle game sprite, the added excitement she felt from Dion was only ramping up her need to slice, and she was sure the overloaded feeling of how giddy she was likely made for quite the combination. Bathed in the light of their combined souls and with the Demon Spear fully changed and ready to go, Misaki repositioned Dion at her side just as the nightmare started towards them. She sneered seeing it zig-zag. “Y’know,” she started with an obvious note of mocking creeping into her voice, “You’re still way too tall, Elmer!”
It had spent half the fight charging them. Now it was her turn. Misaki ran full-tilt at the creature, watching how it swayed carefully. Once she was close enough, she veered off to the left. “Time to cut you down to size!” Her voice was nothing short of joyous. Switching her hold on Dion so she could easily pull off her next move, she swung one of the now bladed ends of the Demon Spear right through its front legs, cutting them off just above the knee a little above her eye level. Misaki then spun, turning Dion around in her hands as she built up more momentum and swung again at its back legs and took them out as well.
Turning on her heel, Misaki took the opportunity to go bold or go home once again. Grin still on her face, she ran towards it again and took advantage of its sinking height. With the added boost of their resonance and without the handicap in her leg, making the jump was no problem with their opponent set to fall. Crouching, she put all her strength into jumping, sailing through the air and landing a might wobbly on the creature’s back. Swaying only as much as she had to in order to keep her balance, she brought Dion back as she prepared to swing and yelled out one last jeer at the nightmare. “Off with your head!”
Misaki swung the Demon Spear in a downward arc upon the nightmare’s neck, feet tilted and braced on either one of its shoulders. Seeing the glowing, spiked blade slice through provided her with the more gratifying feeling she’d had in a while. Still holding Dion aloft she it broke through the other side, all she need do was wait. Dismounting before knowing how it would fall was dangerous, after all.

The Mr. Miyagi comment Dion took as a compliment. Of course the fact that he practiced the same style of karate was coincidental but now wasn’t the time to get sidetracked by unimportant thoughts. Now was the time to see what their resonance could do against an actual kishin egg! So far it had claimed the life of a menacing tree but this was the real test for it. If it could fell malicious foliage though it could handle a corrupt soul no problem. What Misaki planned to do was up in the air but Dion couldn’t wait to watch the show unfold.
Feeling the energy of the resonance surging through him he could also make out the excitement coming from Misaki. He couldn’t blame her though; he was just as excited to see what they could do to Elmer now compared to the failed attacks earlier. Looking at how dazed the horse looked from Misaki’s kick he almost felt sorry for what was going to come next. It had no idea what was about to befall it after the previous attacks had done so little against the thick skin. Even a stab would wreck the thing but he could be cut now and that just meant it had even less of a chance to survive.
Misaki was off and Dion was thrilled to see what happened next. Nearing Elmer it was really a simple move now that he had blades on his weapon form. Slicing through the legs took care of the charging problem and the height problem in one, or two fell swoops. Now it was a matter of how to kill it and look as good as possible. Misaki had the idea of vaulting onto Elmer’s back and he couldn’t say she was wrong with that idea.
Now the queen of hearts quote could have been better but for the action is was still sort of fitting. The only problem Dion saw was that cutting his head off meant they would only be making use of the bladed aspect of the resonance and he wanted as much practice with it as he could get! Focusing the wavelength to the blade it glowed brighter as the combined wavelength of the two concentrated into the tip of the blade. This was the finale of the last mission they needed before they became Two stars, he wanted it to go out with a bang!
When the blade was about to pass through the other side of Elmer Dion released the energy in a blast that would definitely cut through his neck and probably make some unlucky farmer think the mafia was after them if they noticed it before it dissipated. Even if it was more for added flair just using the blast of energy felt awesome for Dion and he wanted to see it on an enemy that wasn’t already as good as dead. That could wait though because now he just wanted to see the soul of Elmer and make it his! Misaki could take care of getting off the headless horse easily enough; he would make sure to keep the resonance stable until they landed so there was no midair breaking to throw her off.

The two blurred images just stood there! The teal glow guided it straight to its apparently waiting target. If the team had finally surrendered then the nightmare would only have an easier job while its head gradually grew clearer. The closer proximity proved to be distracting, flaming blue eyes drawn to spikes and tips. Did the new Meister have a new Weapon? But they both had the same one? They were playing tricks on it now. Truly unforgivable. They charged the nightmare as it charged them. The beast kicked up its feet and neighed ferociously, voice echoing out across the moore in delayed and shrieking notes. If they thought it could terrify it just because it couldn’t keep a straight line, they were wrong. Metal hooves still dug deep crescents into the earth as it ran and it mane and tail whipped glowing blue tracks through the darkness around them. The nightmare was still slack-jawed with one joint useless but with enough persistence to snap sharp teeth. They met and the nightmare threw its head at the Meister, snapping at her head as she passed. It barely missed the end of her ponytail and the Demon Spear sliced straight through its front legs. Metal fell to the ground and blood flew from the wound and stained both the Meister and the nightmare. In pain and shock, the nightmare reared, sending itself up and back, flailing bloody stumps to scatter the earth with dark streaks of red. Shrill and desperate keening tore out of its throat, throwing its head back wild-eyed. It tried to stay upright on its haunches, knowing there was no up if it let itself back down. But then its back legs went, the portions below the knee falling heavily to the ground, metal hooves now stained with the nightmare’s own blood. Wails erupted from the nightmare, blood beginning to gather in greater amounts that threatened to make an awful muddy mess. Its tail whipped and thrashed, the tip scorching the ground where it touched as it began to sink to the ground. And then the Meister was on its back, and it couldn’t even kick her off! But that wasn’t to say it didn’t still try. Landing hard and with determination on bloody stumps that were not all suited to hold its weight, the nightmare jerked and swayed trying to throw her off, shaking its head violently and trying to turn it to snap at her still. The nightmare felt the blade come for it. A sickening screeching noise was its only counter, growing garbled before cutting off entirely. There was too much warm and wet shooting from its veins, spraying all over the ground and its executioner on its back. A blast made its ears ring, but a moment later there was no longer any need for it to be able to hear. The huge head of the nightmare hit the ground hard, jaw opening and closing once before falling still. The resonance cut through the nightmare’s great neck and left only a bloody stump to spurt and leak blood down onto the ground. With no heart or head, the dark and broken body swayed with purpose to the right, falling with an audibly thud. The blue flames went out, leaving behind dark and lifeless eyes and a similarly dark mane and tail. The glow from the resonance that lingered glinted off of the metal hooves now laying stuck in the ground. The desired prize in the shape of a glowing, red orb flickered out of the confines of the nightmare's body to float before its ribcage. Around the team was wet dirt and red mud, gathered around a very dark and very dead horse. With the barn several hundred feet away, the greatest source of light was the teal glow, illuminating the team and their defeated foe among the stifling black of the country night. The stars shone down on them like millions and millions of heavenly onlookers, their applause coming in the form of so many flickering lights. They had won.

They did it.
With either foot braced against the nightmare’s shoulders, Misaki only flinched slightly in the way of closing one eye to avoid blood spraying into it. The last thing she needed was demon horse blood in her eye. Who knows what awful, nasty things that would carry in it. Seeing how easily their resonance sliced through the Kishin Egg’s neck painted a wicked grin on her face. Almost there!
But she wasn’t the only one cutting their way to victory. She could feel Dion doing something too, but it took her a moment to recall just what that was. The blasts, of course! Misaki may have kicked herself if not for riding on the back of a slowly sinking horse. But she could worry about being so forgetful later. The energy collected at the end of the blade and practically blew the nightmare’s head off. It fell and Misaki watched it’s jaw move before falling still. Its body hit the ground finally and Misaki tilted her feet, swaying a bit but keeping her balance after all. Not having a creaky leg to worry about sure did make things easier, even if she would definitely be limping later once their resonance ended.
They did it
The adrenaline rush from victory and the charge pulsing in her ears had delayed her reaction as Misaki had paused to catch her breath. “We did it…” she whispered once, still with her eyes glued to the bloody mess beneath them. A bloody mess, descriptive of both their fallen foe and herself. She was covered in blood herself, stains she would be able to wash out later. They beat it. They did it. They were two stars. Misaki felt her face split into a grin and she jumped, once, twice, giggling with increasing volume. She only stopped to stand triumphantly upon the corpse of their third kill, both feet now on its vast ribcage as she shouted skyward, “WE DID IT!”
Misaki didn’t think it was possible to feel so much at once. The power trip alone combined with adrenaline had her on cloud nine. But so much more surged through her at their success and their imminent leap up to the next level of students. She was overjoyed, excitement made her blood sing, her love for Dion added to the rapid beating of her heart. Without him, none of this would have been possible. She would still be sitting alone in the rain. She couldn’t restrain it, and Misaki didn’t even bother to try. She was to euphoric to care.
Shifted to slide off the corpse, Misaki ignored the blood that got on her boots and skipped several feet away, spinning in a circle with positively elated laughter pouring from her lips. “We did it, we did it,” she repeated in a sing-song voice, “we’re two stars!” Misaki finally paused, letting her laughter peter out, though the grin remained planted firmly on her face. Doing her best to avoid the sharp points, Misaki held the Dion’s spear form horizontally with both hands on the center, bringing it close to her chest. For now it was as close to a congratulatory hug as she could get for now. “We’re finally two stars!”

Dion had expected their resonance to turn the tides in the fight but he wasn’t aware of just how much of an overwhelming power it would give them. It kicked in after they sliced through Elmer’s legs and the giddiness surged through him. The feeling was almost like the waves of joy he felt when the madness got ahold of him but lacking in the toxic undertones and desire to kill things near him. Not only did they go beyond crippling the horse immediately but it was near effortless, Dion felt practically invincible! Now it was just a matter of finishing the fight and getting into the harder stuff.
With his added flair Elmer lost a few more hands on his height, one head’s worth to be exact. He wasn’t sure exactly what was with Misaki’s outburst but it still brought a grin to his face. Of course they did it; there was never any other outcome in his mind. There was always the chance they would lose to a kishin egg but even so it wasn’t going to be against some baby glue stick. Plus the idea of losing didn’t make sense until they were in three star rank, then a kishin egg might be more powerful than them.
Misaki handled the task of getting off the Elmertanic before it sunk and they were done with the oversized pony. Looking at their handiwork Dion was pleased with the results. It was a work of temporary art and Dion couldn’t wait for the exhibit to be over and the real reward to show itself. Misaki’s excitement kept him maintaining the resonance while she expressed how glad she was that they killed it. After she was done talking he let the resonance break and his weapon form shrank back to the three foot form before becoming green light and transforming into his human form.
”I think you missed a report writing step in there but yeah, we’re two stars now. Just need to take care of the final touc-”
Stopping mid-sentence Dion hunched slightly and brought a hand to his forehead. The throbbing made him close his eyes and grit his teeth for a moment before taking a sharp intake of breath. He had almost forgotten about the lovely drawbacks to their resonance. Opening his eyes he exhaled and stared ahead at the glowing soul in front of him. Taking a step he felt his legs wobble slightly as the numb limbs tried to guess what was safe to walk on. Forcing his body to work Dion made it to the soul and picked it up in his left hand and moved back towards Misaki. Pressing his right fist against the soul his partial failed to activate but the message seemed to get across and the soul was absorbed into his fist like it should be. Feeling the energy surge through him he grinned at Misaki and placed his hands in his pockets.
”Just the thing for the headache. We should totally work on our resonance though so my head doesn’t feel like Elmer’s afterwards. Wobbling away after an epic kill would ruin the appeal. Can’t look bad like that as two stars now can we?”

Hopping into the stall of the pregnant mare to hide proved to be best for Saxon’s sanity. For once he applauded himself for the rare show of such foresight, but that it hadn’t been too difficult. Hide in the born or stay outside and watch while two kids fight a galloping, flaming nightmare with razor teeth? The answer was very much obvious. The sounds from outside were awful, the constant echoing neighs from the creature echoing in his ears. He could hear the team talking sometimes too, but he could never make out what they were saying until the very end. Saxon had covered his ears at some point but once it fell more or less silent, he uncovered them. Slowly standing from where he’d crouched in the corner as not to startle the stalls actual occupant, he moved to the door and peered out. No nightmare in the open space between the two rows of stalls. Saxon was sure he heard the makings of a shrill death cry and then what sounded like elation in the form of a female voice, but he aired on the side of caution. Just in case. But thankfully it was unneeded. Stepping outside, he still couldn’t see the team, but he went from walking to hurrying towards the barn doors. Saxon would have liked to throw them open for dramatic effect, but it wasn’t in him at this time of night. He’d been so scared that the fatigue that normally came with being up all night on foal watch had fled. Now it was slowly coming back down on him and he was looking a little sluggish. He was sure the team was far more tired than he was, though, given what they’d just fought and killed. Stepping just outside of the barn, Saxon paused in an instant to stare wide-eyed at what they’d done to the nightmares. “Holy handbaskets!” There was no more blue light to spare visibility now that the creature lay dead, but Saxon could see just enough. A whole lot of red and carnage. They’d even cut the thing’s head clean off! Even better, it looked like the kids had come away unscathed, granted they seemed a bit wobbly. Understandable from Saxon’s point of view. Saxon placed his hands on his hips, shaking his head a bit before starting to smile. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, you two sure did a number on ‘im!” Walking to stand around halfway from the barn and the team, Saxon then nodded off in the direction of the cottage. “Why don’t you two come in and rest a while ‘till yer ride gets ‘ere,” he offered, “you certainly deserve it.” Spoils: 1 Kishin Egg soul + 90 Points Promotion to Two Star Class
